Issue Summary (Field User-Abdel Fattah): HPS thrust chamber high temp.& mechanical vibration

Issue Details (Field User-Abdel Fattah) - 23-Apr-02 11:53:43We had installed HPS unit in EGYPT on Aug., 1999.

The client is WATER KING, the claim was high noise & high mechanical vibration so he manually stopped the HPS.

While trouble shooting of the unit on 20 April, 02

I found that the temp of the thrust chamber housing is 60 degree cent. , while the temp. of the ring between the intake and the thrust chamber was 80 degree cent.

the skid supplied without anchoring plates, also I notices that there is a gab between the skid and the concert foundation at the middle and the front of the skid, I advised to fill these gabs with shims,

Troubleshooting Performed (Field User-Abdel Fattah) - 23-Apr-02 11:53:43Checking the thrust chamber oil type found it un recommended by REDA, also found that the level of the oil is below the min level,I drained the oil and found silver metal chips

I filled the gap between the skid and the concert ,I tightened the pump clamp bolts found some of them loosened

After start up the noise decreased but not normal especially at the thrust chamber side, I monitored the temp. of the thrust chamber and the running amp, the performance of the pump for about 17 continuous running hours ,the temp. of the thrust chamber did not exceed 60 degree cent.,but the temp. of the sleeve between the intake section and the thrust housing was 80 degree cent.

I need to know why there is a different temp.at both place.

Answer Details (ITE) - 23-Apr-02 13:29:57This ticket was received by the InTouchSupport.com help desk and not one of your Segment help desks. I will attempt to reroute this ticket to the responsible help desk. If your My Profile tab is incorrect, I will update your My Profile tab with information that I get from your LDAP record. PLEASE check your My Profile tab to see if I made the correct selection(s). Most likely your primary segment is not Oilfield Services...

The next time you submit a Help Desk ticket, please ensure you have selected your primary Segment, then you *MUST* pulldown the Related To: menu to select the product/service with which you have an issue. It is very important that you choose both your Segment and then a Related To menu item when submitting Help Desk tickets. Those two selections drive the routing for the Help Desk ticket to the responsible desk.

You deserve the best service from In Touch, and routing your tickets to the correct help desk will really help speed an answer to you. If you have not been though the In Touch Training, please do so as soon as possible.

Answer Details (ITE) - 25-Apr-02 19:56:06Response to Trouble Shooting Report

I would like to complement the author of the attached report. This is one of the best I have seen. Good job!!! I would like to add to your report by discussing some of the items.

Work done & Findings

1. The oil was not the REDA oil however this oil would not damage the TC but could make it run hotter.

2. A bad seal caused the low oil level. How fast was the oil leaking out?

3. Good.

4. The silver chips are a major concern. We are probably having a bearing failure. Please replace the TC as soon as possible. If the TC would seize we could have major damage to the entire unit.

7. The area between the TC and the seal contains the mounting bracket and the seal. Which was hotter? I will discuss the issue as if both were and see if you concur with my thoughts. There are three possibilities: The pumped fluid is hot, 80 to 90? C. The mechanical seal has foreign material around it and is not getting enough cooling from the pumped fluid. The seal side bearing or TC oil seal is failing and causing the heating. Since you plan to change out the TC because of the silver chips in the oil you will be able to find the cause. Since it is not economical to send the old TC back to the OPC please take it apart and send me digital photos and I will try to explain any questions you may have.

9. The tightening of the skid bolts was a good idea. Did you use a string line to make sure the pump barrel remained straight? When ever you set a new unit or realign an old one a string line on the pump barrel is required. I have attached the skid installation procedure from the new HPS manual for your use. Since the TC has been damaged I would expect the noise to be high.Conclusion2. The mechanical vibration may have been too high. If my memory is correct this unit has a Murphy vibration switch on it. The calibration of the switch may have changed over time or the switch may have not been set correctly from the initial installation. The only safe method is to use a vibration meter.

5. I have attached a procedure for replacing the TC increase you do not have one.

Any additional questions please let me know.

Rick

Ref. to the response for the trouble shooting report.

Thanks a lot for trhe quick rrply.

Although I have been working at the pump field since 1984 till now about 15 years before REDA in a germany and a japanese factories.especially at the testing of the performance of centrifugal and PC. pumps.

I feel that I need more to know about HPS. and I found INtouch support system is excellent system for that.
