World Expo in China was opened with pomp and circumstance on 1 May. Expo 2010 may not attract the huge media interest outside of China, but no doubt the People’s Republic of China considers Expo 2010 as an event which is at least as important or perhaps more important than the Olympic Games. And with good reason. Expo 2010 is the visible proof that China is now a global economic power. Nearly 170 countries are participating in the exhibition. The exhibition is not a traditional trade show where each country markets its businesses. The exhibitors are trying to brand their country typically based on its historical and cultural background. Kopenhagen Fur is one of several sponsors for the Danish pavilion. The main theme of the Danish exhibition is adventure and therefore one of the world’s most famous sculptures, the original Little Mermaid, has moved from Copenhagen to Shanghai. Furthermore, visitors can take the opportunity to take a short bicycle ride. Denmark is known as a nation where people like biking and in Shanghai the bike is used as a symbol of an energy sustainable development. The fur industry can also rejoice over fur being very visible in the Danish pavilion. Kopenhagen Fur has a close cooperation with Tsinghua University in Beijing. Situated in the university’s design department, Kopenhagen Studio

offers students courses in fur design. The outcome of this cooperation has been lot of exciting designs in fur. And it is precisely the most exciting results of student works that are exhibited in the Danish pavilion. Visitors can also buy small articles in fur in the sales section of the pavilion. At the Denmark Day on 29 June Kopenhagen Fur will be the only Danish company actively contributing in the marketing of Denmark. The Danish crown prince, several Danish ministers and members of the Danish parliament will participate in the festivities, which in addition to concerts with Danish artists include a large fur show. We are very excited that fur becomes very visible at the Danish exhibition. We take it as an enormous pat on the shoulder from the official Denmark. In the fur industry we may tend to count the hours of darkness rather than the hours of light. Many people wish the fur industry ill, but fortunately many more wish us well. As an industry we may tend to be overly defensive. The fur industry has incredibly

much to offer and we can rightly be proud of our profession. One cannot expect the world to love you if you do not love yourself. In any circumstances, this is Kopenhagen Fur’s reason for participating in Expo 2010.

Every day, the sorters at Kopenhagen Fur use quality control in their work to ensure that every skin is sorted correctly. The control is important both for the farmer who is ensured that his skins are sorted correctly and that he gets the right price for each skin, and for the customer who is guaranteed consistency in the sorting. Quality manager Bjarne Rasmussen is very pleased with the extended control that gives Kopenhagen Fur a good reputation: -At Kopenhagen Fur’s April auction, a customer told me that he prefers to buy skins here, because a Burgundy quality bought in December and a Burgundy quality bought in April are similar, Bjarne Rasmussen says. But having a good reputation is also a responsibility. A responsibility to ensure, that the quality remains the same. Bjarne Rasmussen knows that, and he is very confident in Kopenhagen Fur’s control system.

- When a skin goes through the control system it can be controlled up to four times before it is ready to be sold, Bjarne Rasmussen explains.

the four CheCk Points First, there is the size control. Every day, skins sizes are measured by hand to control that the machines measure correctly. In a year, a total of 500,000 skins are measured by hand.

Secondly, the sorter uses a reference lot every time he or she begins sorting a new trolley of skins. The reference lot represents a particular quality of skins, eg Platinum, and exists in every type and quality in both female and male. The sorter takes 20 skins off the trolley to compare them with a reference lot of the type he is sorting. That helps the sorter to be sure of the quality if the skins he is sorting, is what the trolley says

ConsistenCy adds vaLue to the quaLity Every skin travels a long way from the time when it is delivered to Kopenhagen Fur in Glostrup, until it is in the hands of the buyer. A way filled with controls that support the quality of Kopenhagen Fur skins making them the best and most reliable in the world.

it is. Approx. 100,000 skins are compared with reference lots each season. To make sure that the sorter does not miss anything in his control, he takes out 20 skins a couple of times a day, and another sorter calibrates them against the reference lots. This ensures a high awareness of the quality for each sorter. Approx. 500,000 skins are controlled in that way every season. During a season, 1.5 million skins are randomly checked in the end control. - Consequently, more than 2.5 million of this year’s 19.5 million skins go through an extra quality control, Bjarne Rasmussen says. He underlines that it is important that Kopenhagen Fur keeps improving the quality control methods. Therefore, Kopenhagen Fur also has quality statistics. Each year, 500 quality controls of 100 random skins are filed. That helps Kopenhagen Fur keep track of the quality control, and compare one

year with another in order to check if the quality is consistent. -Not only can we give our customers the most reliable quality when carrying out quality control, but we can also see the evolvement of the fur farmers’ breeding stock, when we look at the statistics. The Purple quality is a result of the Danish fur farmers’ improvements. They produced a quality that was better than the one we had before, and because our quality labels are consistent, we needed to introduce a new higher quality label, Bjarne Rasmussen says. As Kopenhagen Fur’s quality manager, he can only be satisfied that Kopenhagen Fur’s controls and standards are so high. - Of course, you can never eliminate all mistakes, but you can make sure that you do your utmost when controlling the quality, and I can earnestly say that we do that, Bjarne Rasmussen says.

1 May was the official opening of Shanghai EXPO 2010 where almost 200 countries exhibit under the common theme: ‘Better Cities, Better Life’. Shanghai EXPO 2010 will last from 1 May - 30 October, 2010. Denmark participates under the title ‘Welfairytale’. Kopenhagen Fur is one of the national partners of the Danish pavilion and will be present at events, VIP arrangements and other happenings at the pavilion. The Danish Pavilion has been nominated as one of the five most interesting pavilions and it has also been put on the official ‘must-see’ list.

koPenhagen fur at eXPoBy participation in Shanghai EXPO 2010, Denmark wishes to strengthen its position as exciting, innovative and forward-thinking. These are values Kopenhagen Fur also reflects. And since China is the most important market for fur at the moment, it was an obvious choice for Kopenhagen Fur to be a national partner at Shanghai EXPO 2010. - Our participation in EXPO 2010 gives Kopenhagen Fur a unique possibility of meeting the Chinese politicians and

opinion formers that play a crucial part in our negotiation with Chinese and foreign companies, says managing director Torben Nielsen. Kopenhagen Fur has been asked to provide fur showpieces to the pavilion, which will be exhibited all through the six month period. There will also be a specially designed mink-flower for sale in the Danish Pavilion’s shop, designed by Kopenhagen Studio and E&L by Lundqvist. The flower will only be available during the six month period and only in the Danish Pavilion’s shop.

the denMark dayEvery pavilion has its own day where all Chinese and international press focus on that one country. The Denmark Day takes place on 29 June. The only company represented is Kopenhagen Fur, who has been asked to stage a fashion show. - It is a great honour for us to be selected as representatives for all the Danish companies participating at EXPO 2010. The Danish political elite and HRH Crown Prince Frederik will participate and I am sure they will enjoy a memorable show,

says Torben Nielsen. The Danish creative styling company Femmes Regionales will be staging the show for Kopenhagen Fur. The inspiration for the show has come from Hans Christian Andersen’s fairytales about The Little Mermaid, The Nightingale and Thumbelina. Nicolai Bergmann, Danish floral artist, famous in Asia, will do the flower decorations for the show. The fur styles showed come from both Kopenhagen Studio in Copenhagen and from Tsinghua University in Beijing.

other eventsTwice during the six month EXPO period, Kopenhagen Fur’s furriers will be present in a ‘live workshop’ at the pavilion. First in mid-May and second in the beginning of October. The furriers will be there to answer questions and to show how specialized the craftsmanship is. Moreover, Kopenhagen Fur has been given five VIP days. These days will be used for seminars, conferences and celebrations with Chinese and other foreign partners. The VIP days take place at the pavilion.

Two high standard seminars arranged in Haining and Yuyao have given a taste of initial success to Kopenhagen Fur’s Manufacturing Programme which was launched last winter. A handful of major fur garment production areas in China has signed agreements to be part of the Manufacturing Programme. The purpose of the Manufacturing Programme is to support the growth of Chinese fur companies by sharing Kopenhagen Fur’s expertise and resources. The first training on 7 April proved this. Two four-hour lectures were held. Mr Stig Reinhold, sales manager and auctioneer of Kopenhagen Fur, gave detailed introduction into the auction procedures and techniques, while the second lecturer, Professor John Gong from Beijing-based University of International Business and Economics, shared insights about global and Chinese economy. Over 80 fur business owners participated in the seminar in Haining. The participants were attentive and active, showing a strong enthusiasm for learning. - This seminar is the first of its kind held exclusively for the manufacturers in Haining. Both lectures were very informative and met the needs of the manufacturers. I look forward to the second training in the fall, said Mr Ren Youfa, chairman of Haining China Leather Market, the largest fur and leather market in China. On 8 April, the seminar moved to Yuyao, another fur production centre. 90 manufacturers participated, many of whom are young generation of the

business. - We enjoy the seminar very much, said Mr Gan, a regular auction customer. He brought his daughter to the seminar. - My daughter has started working in the fur business and this is a great training for her. - The atmosphere was really good and you could see that everyone was pleased with what he learned. I think we have had a very satisfactory start to our Manufacturing Programme, said Stig Reinhold after two days’ seminar. The seminars will soon move to other manufacturing areas, with adjustment in topics to adjust to their different needs.

Commencing the April auction, Kopenhagen Fur invited 100 auction customers to visit the exhibition ‘Colour in Art’ at Louisiana, the Museum of Modern Art in Humlebaek north of Copenhagen where Werner Merzbacher’s excellent collection of approx. 100 paintings is exhibited until 13 June 2010.

It was a special occasion to see the wonderful paintings in the presence of Werner Merzbacher himself and an eye-opener to everybody who is interested in art.

The customers had an interesting guided tour of the collection, and in the presence of Werner Merzbacher the tour was even more interesting spiced with his personal comments.

After the artistic experience the customers enjoyed to the full a dinner at Sletten Inn in a cheerful atmosphere.

The female mink top lot of the April auction – Brown Velvet in Kopenhagen Purple quality – will be brought to China by Mr Ting Bo Wang from Chi Shing Leather Company Ltd.

Even though Mr Wang has been a customer at Kopenhagen Fur’s auctions for 8 years, the top lot was the first he ever purchased in Denmark.

The price ended up at DKK 510 and a not so keen competition at the end of the April auction.

- There was no planning this time, I was just lucky, Mr Wang said. He now plans to create something special of the top lot skins for his wife.

hM the queen of denMark to design her own fur garMentIn collaboration with the Danish designer, Ms Cecilie Toklum, Kopenhagen Studio created a beautiful fairy-tale-inspired ‘fur card’. The card was a gift from the Danish fur farmers and Kopenhagen Fur on the occasion of the Queen’s 70th birthday on 16 April. The Queen may design her own fur garment with Kopenhagen Studio’s furriers’ assistance. Based on the Queen’s interest in fairy-tales, flowers and nature, the furry birthday card was made as a decoupage. Fur and decoupage were joined naturally together in the card: a beautiful fairy-tale card with many small pieces of fur incorporated. Decoupage is a paper collage with fragments of pictures cut out of magazines, newspapers or napkins, glued on canvas or cardboard and then lacquered.

The card also contained five samples of various types of naturally dyed fur, which serve as inspiration for the Queen’s design. - We know that the Queen is fond of Hans Christian Andersen’s collages and fairy-tales, and that decoupage is her hobby. We looked for a combination, says Kopenhagen Studio’s development manager, Ms Lone Olsen.

Ahead of the opening of a new fashion factory – with the inspiring name Guida Lab - in Naples, Italy, Carlo Guida Ltd., represented by Giorgio and Tommaso Guida, bought the White Swakara Top Lot at the top price of DKK 710. The skins are intended for a garment for a Russian customer, whose name must be kept a secret. It is not a secret, however, why Giorgio went all the way to secure the most expensive Swakara lot – he is a big fan of Swakara:

- It is a fantastic material, we like it very much. We always buy many Swakara skins, Giorgio Guida said.

The price ended up at DKK 530 per skin for lot # 239092 - Swakara Black D Purple Extra. Being the second top lot buy this year, Mr Alessando Pajaro was quite happy with his achievement, which – as it is often the case – is meant to become a special garment for a special customer. - In this case the special customer is likely to be a Russian, Mr Pajaro said.

- Swakara is the best quality of Karakul, and I like the idea that we do something for the Namibian farmers. You know, the

story behind the Karakul skins, Mr Pajaro said explaining his buy.

“This has been a huge thing. I am so pleased, because we wondered if anyone would really rally around it, but the results have been phenomenal. I couldn’t get 7,000 fans on Facebook if I opened a shoe store.”

“Animal agriculture is under fire. I call it “animal warfare.” Special interest groups campaigning around the nation under the banner of animal rights, using emotion to trump fact-base science, are changing the way the livestock industry has legally and humanely operated for years.” Such are the words written by Bob Stallman, President of the American Farm Bureau, on his blog ‘The AG agenda’ back in March 2010. The blog refers to the world’s wealthiest animal rights organisation, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), but whereas “using emotion to trump fact-base” is a well-known animal rights strategy that the fur business has pointed out for years, the directness in Mr Stallman’s blog is a rather new tune in agricultural America. - We are going to have to stop being nice and start pushing back, says Julie Brown, a 49-year-old native Missourian with a lifetime in the dairy business both as a livestock farmer and as an ad seller in dairy business organisations. She is reflecting an attitude that at the moment is growing stronger day by day in agricultural America. - Being polite, Julie Brown says, is just the way most countryside Americans are raised, but being nice doesn’t help the farmers at all, because the animal rights movement led by the HSUS doesn’t treat the livestock industry with the same respect. Not at all.

deCePtive fundraisingIn February this year the website Humanewatch.org really started to take off with very frequent updates and it gained enormous success immediately. The site has one purpose, namely to expose the radical vegan agenda of the HSUS, that has succeeded in building up an image as a responsible animal welfare organisation in the U.S. According to a recent poll, 7 out of 10 Americans wrongly believe that HSUS is an umbrella organisation for thousands of local animal shelters. In the U.S., animal shelters are connoted with ‘Humane Society’, eg the Humane Society of Chicago. But the HSUS is not affiliated with the local animal shelters. To explain just that to the American

people has been one of Humanewatch’s first goals. The site consists of a blog, detailed information about persons and organisations related to the HSUS and a growing document library, where information, which the HSUS certainly preferred was left unattended, is made available for anyone. For instance, you can find the HSUS’ tax return sheet from 2008 which shows that less than one half per cent of the organisation’s 100 million USD budget goes to hand-on sheltering of dogs and cats. HSUS TV ads clearly suggest hand-on sheltering of dogs and cats to be the primary focus of the HSUS - while asking the American people for donations of 19 USD a month.

ruraL aMeriCa unites against the aniMaL rights BuLLyAt record-breaking speed, the website Humanewatch.org has gained tremendous popularity. Dedicated to ‘keeping a watchful eye on the Humane Society of the United States’, Humanewatch offers a platform for sealers, farmers, fishermen, hunters, pet owners - and other people tired of being bullied by the world’s richest animal rights organisation.

an iMMediate suCCessHumanewatch.org is run by the non-profit Center for Consumer Freedom (CCF), a front group for American food and agriculture companies. The blog is written by Research Director at CFF, David Martosko, who also is very active on Humanewatch’s facebook site, where many people comment on the various updates. When Kopenhagen Fur News interviewed Mr Martosko, Humanewatch had only existed for two weeks, but the Facebook site already numbered 7,000 fans. - This has been a huge thing. I am so pleased, because we wondered if anyone would really rally around it, but the results have been phenomenal. I couldn’t get 7,000 fans on Facebook if I opened a shoe store. Social media is just a tool, it’s not a product - you have to have a good product. I think it reflects a perceived need, an information vacuum. People tell me: “We have to have this, we need

this”, David Martosko says. By the end of April, Humanewatch had more than 30,000 Facebook fans. For the record, this author is one of them and a keen contributor to the various discussions. Julie Brown is another author: - The reason why I feel so emotionally moved towards becoming involved in discussions is that I myself have been affected by watching some of my friends in the city who are normally very logical, very rational people and yet they are drawn by the things that HSUS has placed in publicity, says Julie Brown. - It makes me so sad that people blindly accept those things as a truth, Julie Brown says pointing out that contrary to the animal rights propaganda, Humanewatch provides her with sober facts. She can use those facts to educate her uninformed friends about the true agenda of the HSUS. And taking advantage of social media like Twitter and Facebook to spread the message and share information,

“The way I see it, the truth is an excellent shield.”David Martosko

Page 16: KFNews_June10

16 KOPENHAGEN FUR NEWS

Humanewatch also succeeded in uniting all those various groups in America that HSUS wants to shut down. - I think part of the power Humanewatch holds for people is that the grassroots have always been there, but it really has united every sector, not just the dairy industry, not just the dog breeding industry, not just an individual sector. Humanewatch really has crystallized and clarified that it involves all of us. That’s what makes it so potentially effective, Julie Brown says.

hsus is More dangerous than PetaSeveral times recently, the CEO of the HSUS, Wayne Pacelle, has felt the urge to state that HSUS does not have a radical vegan agenda on his blog ‘A Humane Nation’. In a rather well-known animal rights rhetoric he is attacking CFF for being a front group for ‘the animal abuse industry’ and he claims that HSUS is merely seeking to phase out certain confinement practises. In April he wrote that “far from being doctrinarie, the HSUS brings a science-based and reasonable approach to these discussions”. Let alone, the fact that the American Veterinary Medical Association strongly oppposes HSUS’ ‘science-based approach’. It is probably a question whether hunters, fur farmers, sealers or circus folks are shaking their heads the most at Pacelle’s claims. David Martosko certainly shakes his. Fancying telling American media that

“HSUS is PETA with a much nicer wristwatch and no naked interns” he does not believe HSUS’ alleged intentions. HSUS has grown to become a political behemoth aiming at shutting down animal agriculture by filing ballot after ballot after ballot in state after state. Legislation that makes animal agriculture financially impossible. - We follow these people around, Mr Martosko says. We go to their conventions, we sit in their meetings, we are on all their e-mail lists, we have followed some of these people for years and years and

years. We have the president of the HSUS on paper saying that he wants to ban all sport hunting. We have one of his chief deputies saying that it is a good thing, when fur breeders’ co-ops go up in flames. Oh, we have lots of evidence, and when you put it all together it suggests that HSUS is a group with the same goals as PETA, but with a much more patient approach and a much longer timeline. I think it is interesting that the HSUS has very well funded pension plans, retirement accounts for their executives, because these people plan to be doing what they are doing long enough to retire on a pension. They don’t think they will get everything they want right now. They are just trying to move society, each generation in their direction, by increasing the cost of doing business. We recognized that HSUS is a much more dangerous organisation than PETA could ever be, Martosko says.

stand uP to the BuLLyThe sharpened voice of rural America suggests that the message about the HSUS has come through. Julie Brown, who according to the vegan Wayne Pacelle is an animal abuser, has been convinced for the past two or three years, culminating with Humanewatch’s efforts these past few months: What I’m really and truly amazed about is the period of time that our agriculture industry in the U.S. has let this develop over time. We didn’t realize that they had such a radical agenda. In the meantime they were sort of putting together this large fundraising machine and putting together an agenda that would include the complete abolition of animal ownership. It is in fact very frightening, because HSUS represents themselves in one way while doing something entirely different. And the fact that they are slick and reluctant to give any direct answers to questions, when they are interviewed, is also very disturbing to me, she says.

“I think part of the power Humanewatch holds for people is that the grassroots have always been there, but it really has united every sector, not just the dairy industry, not just the dog breeding industry, not just an individual sector. Yes, the HSUS has got some influence, people are afraid of these guys, but at the end of the day, they are just a big, tough bully and we are giving you all the information you need to feel confident about standing up to the bully.David Martosko

WhAt Du you think oF the recent Development With humAneWAtch.org?In the U.S. the introduction of Humanewatch.org has expanded the dialogue questioning the mission and fundraising strategies of the HSUS (and PETA). By raising questions and bringing new information concerning the HSUS to the forefront Humanewatch.org has created new levels of awareness and the court of public perception seems to be swaying a bit away from these groups. Even media outlets seem more open to delving into the questions that have been raised about these groups and reporting seems to be less favourable to the animal rights movement than in past years.

hoW cAn the Fur buSineSS beneFit From the momentum oF thiS ‘Anti-AnimAl rightS movement’?As the fur industry works toward greater transparency we face a consumer who is more receptive to our story - and is more likely to be questioning some of the “facts” being fed to them by animal rights groups. We have already seen public perception shifting in favour of the fur industry as witnessed in the May, 2009 Gallup Poll research indicating that US social acceptance of fur was up 7% versus the previous year. We expect to see this trend continue.

The achievements of Humanewatch have been huge these past few months. Readers are best informed by visiting the site themselves, but among the top ones are the downgrading of the HSUS by Charity Navigator, the best known non-profit watchdog organisation in the U.S. that grades organisations on how well they spend their money. Charity Navigator downgraded the HSUS from four stars to three due to Humanewatch’s efforts of showing the American people just how small an amount of their donations - less than half a per cent - that actually goes to homeless animals in animal shelters. At the same time, Charity Navigator downgraded HSUS’ international arm, Humane Society International (HSI), from three to one. Canadian sealers are indeed very familiar with the HSI since HSI, also the key lobbying group behind the EU trade ban on seal products, puts

tremendous efforts in ending the annual seal hunt. Another major achievement is the fact that Humanewatch, along with other agriculture bloggers and stakeholders in cyberspace, managed to make several companies stop their 100,000 USD donations to the HSUS. They simply complained to the companies through Facebook, by e-mail and other internet communication channels that they would not buy their products unless the companies stopped the donations to HSUS. Ironically, this method is traditionally very common with the animal rights movement when petitioning against animal industry, since it is very suited for their young and internet familiar audience. All the achievements, all the fuzz, seem to have encouraged all sections of American animal agriculture to speak up and David Martosko and his people at

CFF surely are not going to stop their own success. - The Humane Society of the United States has become so big and so rich. It used to be the animal rights groups who where the Davids and now they are the Goliaths. They are the bullies in the schoolyard who push you around. What we are learning from the Humanewatch website is that people can organize, people can help each other and people can gang up on the bully. Yes, the HSUS has got some influence, people are afraid of these guys, but at the end of the day, they are just a big, tough bully and we are giving you all the information you need to feel confident about standing up to the bully. I get a lot of punches, rhetorical punches. I take a lot of heat and not everyone is comfortable with that, but the way I see it, the truth is an excellent shield, David Martosko says.

After a visit to Kopenhagen Studio and a fur farm in Denmark, and time to research how to make fake fur, nine out of ten students decided to use real fur for the project. In the beginning of April, their styles were exhibited at the Royal Danish Embassy’s common house. A building all the Nordic embassies share for exhibitions, concerts and other cultural events in Berlin. Since the design students were competing, the exhibition ended up with a finissage, a closing ceremony, where the students presented their styles. The winner of the competition was announced by a panel of judges. The prize was a week’s education at Kopenhagen Studio. The finissage took place on 7 April, and more than 250 people took their time to see the design students’ styles and to hear the presentations. It was a happy Grit Seymour, who is a professor at the Berlin University of the Arts, and the inventor of the competition, who talked about the project that afternoon. She herself was not a judge, because

she felt too involved in the students’ projects. But she was very happy to be able to give the design students a possibility to learn more about a material. - In my former job as a designer, I never had the opportunity to take a stand on different materials like fur. There was always too much to do, and another assignment to finish, so I am so happy that the students get the possibility to learn and decide for themselves what they think of a given material. Every designer should spend time to learn about the materials they are using, but nobody really does take the time, Grit Seymour said.

Cotton vs. fur The design students’ presentations at the finissage really proved the importance of research and information when you want to make an informed choice. Several of the students explained that they had been sceptical about the use of fur, until they had seen how fur is produced and have learned about the possibilities of this material. They changed their minds having learned more about how to produce real fur. - Having researched on the materials, I had to use fur because it is the most interesting material, also seen from the ethical side, student Raphael Galliou said in his presentation.

Most people choose the real thingIs fur a material you could work with? Are you for or against? Ten design students from Berlin were asked that question. The answer was given on a sunny April afternoon at the Royal Danish Embassy in Berlin

The judges had a tough time deciding who the winner was going to be. But in the end it was Johanna Bose who won the competition with her collection

“Shades of grey”. She had made three different styles of three different materials. A coat of real fur, a coat of plastic and a coat made of cotton T-shirts. In her research, Johanna Bose had focused on how many animals were killed for a coat. Surprisingly, the outcome was that the coat made of cotton T-shirts was the material that demanded the life of most animals compared to the other two styles. The judges felt that she with her research had embraced the subject; to learn more about both real and fake fur, and that she had made some beautiful styles. A happy and overwhelmed Johanna Bose accepted the prize presented by

Kopenhagen Fur’s Chairman of the Board, Mr Kaj Kristensen. - I am so honoured and excited about the prize. I did not know anything about fur before this project started. But I am really looking forward to learning more about this material, Johanna Bose said. Her own personal favourite of her fellow students’ styles was a beach theme made by Ms Katja Feist. She had called her collection “Furry Beach Club - for members only”, and had made a bikini and a bathing suit of mink. After the prize was presented, the audience had the possibility to take a closer look at the students’ design. After the competition, the design students have achieved a broader knowledge of both real and fake fur, than before the design competition the Realfake Fur.

Brooke shields’ fur dreaM fulfilled in denMark

- Wearing fur may be associated with something grandmotherish. Something you wear when you visit the opera, or if you are a rock star and wears it inside out. But I will advocate that both my generation and the younger generation can wear fur, says Brooke Shields. The comment fell as the American actress visited Kopenhagen Fur’s creative workshop, Kopenhagen Studio early in March. Here she began designing her own mink coat made of the best Danish fur skins. Brooke Shields chose to work with the short-haired, black mink. - Brooke Shields will be proud to be an exponent of the beautiful Danish fur skins in the U.S. She thinks that Kopenhagen Fur is very unique, says Kopenhagen Studio’s Partnership & Alliance manager Natia Linneman and adds that the star has been intrigued by the way Kopenhagen Fur is organized and how the company centrally

supports disease control and quality on fur farms etc.

fur is a LittLe girL’s dreaM- The gain for the Danish fur farmers is that well-established people are crazy about the product, says Natia Linneman. The visit of Brooke Shields, who at the age of 15 became famous for her leading part in the movie The Blue Lagoon, was arranged in February during New York Fashion Week, where Kopenhagen Fur, in cooperation with the design house J. Mendel, had a major event in the city. J. Mendel also helps Brooke Shields to design her coat. - I will wear the fur garment when I follow my children to school, when I drink coffee and when I sleep, says Brooke Shields, who calls it a little girl’s dream to be able to design her own fur garment.

Brooke Shields visited Denmark in March to act out her ‘little girl’s dream’: to design her own fur coat. The Hollywood star is thrilled with Kopenhagen Fur.

expects to offer a total of 17.9 million mink

skins which is reduced by approx. 600,000

skins on last season’s figures. The Danish

mink production will decline by approx. 4%.

Pearl, White, Sapphire, Pastel and Cross

mink will be reduced most, but also Black is

declining in number. The number of skins

in Mahogany, Brown and Glow will increase

marginally, while Silverblue will rise by ap-

prox. 12%.

The great demand for the Velvet quality has

had the effect that a large part of the mink

production has been diverted to this type

while the production of longhaired mink

skins is being reduced.

For each of the five scheduled auctions

there will be a varied offering of the qualities

Platinum, Burgundy, Ivory and Quality A.

The qualities I and II will also be offered.

Purple, Kopenhagen Fur’s top quality, will

be offered at the auctions in February, April

and June, and top lots will be sold at all

three auctions.
