Kentucky Fried Chicken ( KFC)
KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken) is a fast food restaurant chain which specializes
in fried chicken and is headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky. It is the world's second largest
restaurant chain overall (as measured by sales) after McDonald's, with over 18,000 outlets in
120 countries and territories as of December 2012. The company is a subsidiary of Yum!
Brands, a restaurant company which also owns the Pizza Hut and Taco Bell restaurant chains.
KFC was founded by Harland Sanders, a colourful figure who began selling fried
chicken from his roadside restaurant in Corbin, Kentucky, during the Great Depression.
Sanders identified the potential of the restaurant franchising concept, and the first "Kentucky
Fried Chicken" franchise opened in Utah in 1952. KFC popularized chicken in the fast food
industry, diversifying the market by challenging the established dominance of
the hamburger. By branding himself as "Colonel Sanders", Harland became a legendary
figure of American cultural history, and his image remains prominent in KFC
advertising. However, the company's rapid expansion saw it grow too large for Sanders to
manage, and in 1964 he sold the company to a group of investors led by John Y. Brown,
Jr. and Jack C. Massey.
Nowadays KFC is spreading their outlet all over India and it is available in 75 cities of India
and soon will open around 500 new outlets by 2015. So today I visited one KFC to know
more about it and feel so good to be there.
Business Model The basic plan in start of KFC was the founder (Sanders)wanted to serve good home cooked
quality meal to the customers ,now it is a franchise with 18,000 outlets across 120 countries,
In 1986 , Kentucky Fried Chicken opened its $23 million 2,000,000-square-foot Technical
Centre to enable the company to keep developing and launching new products into the market
. In year 1991 the company invested in a 20 million on a computer system to control fryer
cooking time. It’s has been an food chain to make use of technological advances as in when
necessary ,this makes it one of the best home delivery restaurant, and food chain where
billing errors are minimum.
IT EQUIPMENT’S:-As everyone knows that information technology plays important role in promoting the
business of the organization and like this KFC did great job by implementing the new
information technology to increase its business in whole world. KFC promote their business
mostly through media and when I visit the KFC in Gopalan Mall I found various information
technology equipment which helps in serving the customers fast.
In the counter they use touch screened computer that takes all the orders which were
made by the customers and then printed receipt of the ordered menu is made and then
all the ordered items is given to the customer after few minutes.
There was another computer which helps as mediator between the service provider
and chefs. Whenever the food stuffs becomes less than they make their order to chef
to give more food stuffs.
All the new offers are running in the LCD
IT EQUIPMENT’S TO BE IMPLEMENTED:-
The equipment’s to be implemented as below:-
Touch screen devices should be in every table to receive order.
More LCD should be used to display offers.
SWOT ANALYSIS:-The SWOT analysis of an organization provides the strength, weakness, opportunity and
threats to the organization and below list provides the SWOT analysis of KFC.
1. STRENGTH:-
Ranks highest among all chicken restaurant chains. Huge popular brand name and high brand loyalty. High number of products. Generate 1 billion dollars per year. Hygienic food and quick service. Good advertising and marketing. Strong trademarks recipes.
2. WEAKNESS:-
KFC is losing their market every year due to increase in other chicken chain stores Franchise management globally is a challenge Lack of focus on R&D.
3. OPPORTUNITY:-
Introduce better vegetarian products Introduce home delivery Venture into newer markets More spending on the resources and development as well as introducing new food
items and products.
4. THREATS:-
Threat from other eating joints/restaurants With the lifestyle of people changing due to growing awareness about healthier food
people now look for something healthy, low calories and delicious at the same time
LAYOUT:-
WorkflowThe employees of the food chain follow different workflow depending on their hierarchy.
Counter employee: swipes his card and accesses the billing portal of KFC, it’s a touch
screen operated system where they can by hitting on the name of the food item select it
for billing. They give the bill take cash or card. Get the order and serve it on the counter
to the person and remove the order as it gets served.
Chefs: They make the order by collecting the food articles required either on a burger or
make the fries and other menu items by going into the food inventory take them out
cooking them and replenishing the item trays time to time.
Managers: They keep check on the working of the personnel and sometimes to their job
also by occupying the position of counter or collecting the items to serve the order.
Cleaners: They are on alert to keep the whole area spotless by clearing the tables when a
customer leaves and clean the floor of the restaurant disposes the garbage.

EXPERIENCE:-The experience which I gains is very good and I loves all the food stuffs of the KFC. The quality of the food and taste is awesome, so according
to me KFC still serving good and they need to focus more on ordinary person without compromising their quality of the product.
