With a name that literally means “the man” in his native Wolof, Gorgui Dieng (pronounced GOR-gee Jeng) is unquestionably U of L fans’ man of the hour. His appeal, however, goes far beyond the court, and even beyond his adopted hometown of Louisville.

It’s fair to say that Dieng’s presence here at U of L represents more than just the feel-good story of basketball stardom it’s so often been spun as. Rather, it’s a larger story of the ways in which the world is getting smaller—not because of policies or competitions, but because of individual goals and promises kept, of personal ambition and an insatiable desire for self-improvement.

Dieng is originally from Senegal, where he attended the Sports for Education and Economic Development (SEEDS) Academy. His family remains there, and though he calls home frequently, he has no plans to return home anytime soon. He made a promise to his parents that he would earn a degree while he attended college, and that’s a promise he plans to keep; he knows that making something of himself beyond sports is more important than the fame that attends great players. When asked about his promise, he replies: “My dad, he don’t care about basketball. If you tell my dad about basketball, he just ignores you. All he cares

is how I do in school, am I making good grades, do I not miss class, how do I do on my homework, that’s all he needs. Any time he calls me he asks, “Are you healthy?” I say yeah. “Are you happy?” I say yeah. And then he says, “How’s school?” That’s the third question.”

Fans, too, have responded overwhelmingly to Dieng’s self-effacing, good-natured style. The 6’11”, 245-pound Dieng is well-known for his gentleness and civility, shaking the coaches’ hands every day before practice and eschewing the traditional rivalries that attend college basketball. With his team-fi rst attitude, he’s garnering the admiration of coaches, players, and fans alike, so much so that coach Rick Pitino went as far as naming one of his horses after the sophomore center. And even though most of his fans wouldn’t agree with his sentiments, one of the things that makes Dieng such a likable person both on and off the court is the fact that he doesn’t “play this game to make enemies, only friends.” When tensions between UK and UofL were at a boiling point last season, he said, "I don't care about rivalries. I don't want to play basketball to make enemies. I just want to have fun with people.”

In a sport where the focus is so often on the fl ashiness of the men’s game (tickets to U of L men’s team events average about $35, while the women’s are only $8), Shoni Schimmel is bringing a showmanship to U of L that’s beginning to turn heads. Described variously as “wily,” a “show-stopper,” a “creative superstar,” a “hoops demigoddess,” and—the least descriptive, but perhaps the most intriguing of her new pseudonyms—“the pistol,” Schimmel has been tearing up the court with her unbelievable behind-the-back and no-look passes. Her fi erceness is winning big for the Lady Cards, but it’s also attracting new fans to the game who, before Schimmel, had no interest in women’s sports.

You’ll fi nd it over and over again in discussion forums: people who claim that they’ve “just” become big fans because of Schimmel’s entrance into the game. They range from the subdued to the ebullient—“the best thing to ever happen to basketball!”—but they all have one thing in common: they’re putting women’s basketball on the map in a big way.

Schimmel began her NCAA career at U of L as part of the select 2010 recruited class, the “Lady Cards Legends.” In addition to Louisville, she was heavily courted by UCLA, Oregon, Rutgers, and South Carolina, but her ultimate choice of coming to play in Possibility City was exactly what the Lady Cards needed to jump-start their game after a disappointing 2009-2010 season. During her freshman year, she averaged

15.1 points per game and scored a career-high 33 points against Xavier to help lead Louisville past the No. 2 seed and advance to the Sweet 16, where she continued to wow with her intense, fl ashy moves.

Originally from the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation in eastern Oregon (Cayuse, Umatilla, Walla Walla), Schimmel is the highest-ranked Native American female basketball player ever. Of her experience growing up on the reservation, she says, “There’s so many Native Americans that coulda-shoulda-woulda but didn’t do anything.” She went on, in an interview with The Courier Journal, to say that “It’s almost sickening how much talent is (on the reservation). I am very proud of who I am and where I came from, but I wanted to be one of the ones that made it out. My job is to play basketball, and I love doing it.”

sales and the development and maintenance of our new website (launching in November).

AG: What’s the very best thing about working with the KFC Yum! Center?

SK: I absolutely love every aspect of working for AEG [ed. note: The Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG) is the KFC Yum! Center’ operating company] and marketing all of the events held at the Yum! Center. There is so much cohesion and excitement among our staff. Each day, I look forward to working on new ways to promote the events, but the ultimate reward is going to the shows and seeing so much excitement in the stands.

AG: Is the KFC Yum! Center comparable to other entertainment venues across the country? What makes it stand out?

SK: The KFC Yum! Center is one of the nicest, most aesthetically pleasing arenas in the nation. It was built to provide an unforgettable experience for the attendees as well the performers and athletes, and that has not gone unnoticed in our industry. We are also ranked as one of the top-selling venues in the world.

Deifi ed by Rolling Stone Magazine as the band who, “along with The Beatles and The Rolling Stones … complete the holy trinity of British rock,” The Who is coming to Louisville’s KFC Yum! Center in February. The Louisville stop is part of the 2012/2013 “Quadrophenia and More” North American tour.

Appropriately for the originators of the rock opera, The Who will be performing the entirety of the “Quadrophenia” album. This full-length double album is the coming of age story of Jimmy, who—over the course of 17 songs—searches for his own identity and place in the world. The title, “Quadrophenia,” is a play on the word “schizophrenia,” and is representative of

the personalities of the four band members (each of whom is refl ected in a facet of Jimmy’s personality).

The album opens with an introduction by Jimmy of his four personalities: a tough guy/helpless dancer ("Helpless Dancer"—Roger Daltrey), a romantic (“Is It Me?”—John Entwistle), a bloody lunatic (“Bell Boy”—Keith Moon), and a beggar/hypocrite (“Love Reign O’er Me”—Pete Townshend). It follows him as he endures the trials, tribulations, and daily tragedies of growing up, and ultimately ends as he comes to an ambiguous epiphany and fi nds “himself.”
