Places Around The Arena

Waterfront ParkWaterfront ParkA sprawling, 72-acre municipal park extending along Louisville’s downtown waterfront, Waterfront Park

offers a beautiful green oasis in the heart of Kentuckiana’s hustle and bustle. Waterfront Park hosts more than 120 events every year, everything from concerts and festivals, to charity walks, volleyball tournaments, weddings, and corporate picnics.

The park plays a central role in the festivities leading up to the Kentucky Derby. It’s the best place for Louisvillians and visitors from Southern Indiana to relax and watch Thunder Over Louisville, with an unobstructed view of the airshow and the explosive fi reworks display. The Chow Wagon—an area marked off for food vendors—is also located here, with all the deep-fried fair food that a visitor could possibly want. Whether it’s modernist architecture, solitary running trails, outdoor concerts, or a good corndog, Waterfront Park has it all.

Louisville’s Tibetan Buddhist Center, the Drepung Gomang Institute, and the City of Louisville will host His Holiness the Dalai Lama. The KFC Yum! Center's two-day event, called “Engaging Compassion,” will begin on Sunday, May 19th with the Dalai Lama giving a public presentation. The Dalai Lama’s talk will focus on how individuals can engage with compassion from within his or her own religious tradition in order to build world peace from the local level to the world community. The two-hour presentation will include a strong interfaith component followed by interaction with local interfaith religious dignitaries and other leaders.

The Dalai Lama has been the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize and the Congressional Gold Medal and is known around the world as a spokesman for the non-violent, peaceful, and compassionate resolution of human confl ict.

Following his public talk, the Dalai Lama will continue to appear with more intimate meetings within the community. On Monday, May 20th, the Dalai Lama will give a two-part public Buddhist teaching

in the morning and afternoon. This event, also at the Yum! Center, is expected to draw a large crowd of people wishing to explore and deepen their understanding of the Buddhist faith. The teaching is called “Attisha’s Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment.”

On Tuesday, May 21st, His Holiness will address middle, high school, and college-aged students at the Kentucky Center. In

addition to His Holiness’ speaking engagements, organizers are planning the three-day event to include a rich program of music, arts, cultural performances, dialogue, and discussions that will

touch the entire community of Louisville and raise awareness around the topic of compassion and kindness.

The public talk at the Yum! Center will be held Sunday, May 19th, at 1 pm; the two-part lecture on Monday, May 20th, will begin at 9 am. Sixteen thousand tickets will be available for the public talk, at prices ranging between $5 and $100. Fleetwood Mac, one of the most enduring, beloved, and successful bands in rock and pop history, will perform at the KFC Yum! Center as part of a 34-city major tour, "The Fleetwood Mac Live 2013 Tour." This will mark their fi rst tour in three years, and comes on the heels of a massive reissue of the classic album, Rumours.

The British-American rock band formed in 1967 in London and, in its current incarnation, includes Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks, Mick Fleetwood, and John McVie. Fleetwood and McVie have been members of the band since 1967, while Buckingham and Nicks have been playing with the group since 1975. To coincide with the tour, the new, deluxe issue of Rumours was reissued with previously

unreleased live and studio material. Rumours is one of the most successful albums in history, with sales of more than 40 million copies, a 31-week run at the top of the pop charts, and four top-ten singles. During their performance, Fleetwood Mac will be performing

excerpts from Rumours and other fan favorites—along with a few surprises.

The show will be held on Thursday, April 11th, at 8 pm. Tickets for the show

are on sale now, and are available at LiveNation.com, Ticketmaster.com, the KFC Yum! Center box offi ce, and all Ticketmaster outlets. They can also be charged by phone at 1-800-745-3000. Tickets are $49.50, $79.50, or $149.50 (plus all applicable fees).

In support of her blockbuster new album, Red, Taylor Swift will be launching a North American tour with an important stop here in Louisville at the KFC Yum! Center. Red, which was released in October, has topped iTunes album sales in over 40 countries, and has spawned several critically-acclaimed singles, including “We are Never Ever Getting Back Together.”

Speaking from a very personal place, Swift performs songs of her sadness and anger over breakups and men in her life that she feels have hurt her. While the songs are about her individual experiences, they often speak to her legions of fans—“Swifties”—with whom the essential message of betrayal resonates.

On the Red tour, Swift is currently slated to headline 58 shows in 45 cities in 29 states and 3 provinces in 2013. The tour will kick-off on March 13 in

Omaha, Nebraska and continue through September. Acclaimed singer/songwriter Ed Sheeran, whose duet with Taylor, “Everything Has Changed,” will be a special guest on all of the shows on the tour.

Red is Swift’s fourth studio album, and was released in October of last year as a

follow up to the commercially-successful album, Speak Now. She announced the Red tour via live webchat, during which she also revealed the

album title and cover, as well as answered fan questions. The album has produced four singles, which will be performed during her concert at the Yum! Center.

Swift will be in Louisville on May 7th, with her show beginning at 7 pm. Tickets—which can be purchased through the KFC Yum! Center box offi ce, online, and at all Ticketmaster outlets—are $32.50, $73.50, and $88.50.

Coming to the KFC Yum! Center with awesome elephants, beautiful big cats, gorgeous horses, and elegant exotics—to say nothing of the human members—the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus presents "Built to Amaze!" the 143rd edition of the Greatest Show on Earth. They promise to surprise and delight audiences with over-the-top feats of strength, agility, and courage, and above all, leave everyone feeling amazed.

The circus believes that promoting human-animal interaction is vital to increasing public awareness of the need to protect and preserve animal species, and that "Built to Amaze!" is the perfect chance to introduce children to the wonders of the animal world. It’s also a rare opportunity to see the limits of human abilities as they’re used to perform and entertain. Circus

performers from across the globe present the perfect blend of athleticism and bravery, where power meets fearlessness and amazement has no bounds. From the blueprints to the band, the crates to the clowns, the

hammer to the high wire, everyone is invited to witness the spectacle as the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus measures out the perfect mix of marvel and majesty

in a spectacle where the impossible comes to life.

The circus is April 25th - 28th, with performances at 7:30 pm on Thursday and Friday, 11 am, 3 pm, and 7 pm on Saturday, and 2 pm on Sunday. Tickets are $15-$85 depending on seating, and can be purchased through the KFC Yum! Center box offi ce, online, and at all Ticketmaster outlets.

Women's NCAA Basketball Tournament

The 2013 NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament’s fi rst and second rounds will be hosted by the University of Louisville at the KFC Yum! Center March 24th-26th. These games serve as a prequel to later brackets, such as the elite eight and fi nal four.

The initial matchups will not be announced until one to two weeks prior to the games, but tickets may be purchased now. An all-session ticket includes two games on March 24th and one game on March 26th, and everyone who attends must have a ticket regardless of age. Tickets are $36.30. Tickets are on sale now, and may be purchased by contacting the KFC Yum! Center sales offi ce at 502-562-0152 or online.

Women’s basketball championship brackets and seeds are announced on Selection Monday, which this year is March 16th. ESPN has exclusive rights to cover the women’s tournament selection announcements, which—by hosting on Monday, as opposed to Selection Sunday with the men’s basketball tournament selections—allows for more prominent coverage. Though specifi c teams won’t be notifi ed until that time, it’s traditional for teams to play on their home court, so

visitors to the KFC Yum! Center will have the opportunity to watch their beloved Lady Cards play against teams from other cities.

Louisville’s Lady Cards competed at the Big East Tournament in Connecticut on March 8th, as part of the lead-up to Selection Monday. The team has been plagued with injuries this season, from sophomore forward Shanwta Dyer’s knee to junior point guard Tia Gibbs’ and senior forward Asia Taylor’s hip injuries. The reshuffl ed lineup has put the team in a precarious position for the tournament, but even though they’re not playing at full strength, their loyal fans still believe they’ll put on a good show.

The University of Louisville has enjoyed tremendous support from their fans. Since moving to the KFC Yum! Center, over 300,000 fans have viewed the team in the state of the art arena. The Cardinals have also been ranked second in attendance the last two seasons, averaging over 10,000 fans a game. The fans have sold out the arena twice in the last two seasons, including the opening game, when 22,124 fans packed the arena. This year, make sure you’re one of them!

Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, and Louis Tomlinson—together, the fi ve teenage heartthrobs that make up One Direction—will bring their particular brand of mass-media created superstardom to the KFC Yum! Center on June 16th. Through their participation on the UK television show The X Factor, the boys became overnight sensations, bringing them to the attention of millions of loyal fans. They’ve seen their debut album reach number one in fi fteen countries around the world and become a global phenomenon.

The 2013 World Tour has been commercially successful, with sold-out shows and demand for tickets prompting organizers to continually add more dates to the itinerary. The concert tour consists of over 100 shows in Australia,

Southeast Asia, Europe, and North America. In the UK and Ireland, ticket sales reached 300,000 within a day of release, which included a six-date sell out at the O2 Arena in London. In Australian and New Zealand markets, tickets grossed $15.7 million, with all

190,000 tickets being sold for eighteen shows to be held in Australia and New Zealand. The show at the KFC Yum! Center also sold out within days of tickets going on

sale, but as the band continues to add previously unannounced shows to their tour, fans who didn’t manage to secure theirs in time needn’t give up yet.

One Direction will perform on Sunday, June 16th, at 7:30. Any tickets that become available can be purchased through Ticketmaster or at the KFC Yum! Center box offi ce.
