A lot has changed in the last 3 months, not least the landscape in the town centre! The demolition is virtually complete and the start of a new beginning for Keynsham is emerging.Plans for the Somerdale site were shown in the Key Centre at the Methodist Church in February and planning submission for Fry Club and the houses, together with outline permission for the other areas, will be sought within the next couple of months. Another very successful Victorian Evening took place at the end of November and moving the fairground rides to Ashton Way was seen to be a positive step and seemed to make the High Street less crowded. It was very rewarding to see so many attending the Town Council Community Networking evening on 26th February and we hope that you all found it useful in promoting your groups and fi nding new contacts.We would love to see more entries in the Keynsham in Bloom competition this year in the various categories and a form is enclosed with this newsletter, so all you need is a pen and a few pots or containers (if you haven’t got a garden!) to enter. All we need is a summer, unlike last year, to encourage a “Blooming Keynsham”!

Transition Keynsham has a Community Veg Plot in the park. We are creating a friendly and welcoming garden for anyone who would like to join in the gardening or who would like to learn about how to grow food and meet like-minded people in the area. We want to grow seasonal vegetable crops, to share skills and knowledge and welcome anyone who would like to get involved or who just want to come along, have a look and have a chat. We will choose fruit and veg which are easy to grow, look lovely and most of all taste great. Alongside them we will be growing beautiful fl owers and herbs to attract bees, butterfl ies and other pollinators. We will of course be sharing the harvest.

Keynsham Town Council is running youth club sessions at the TimeOut Centre which will be open 3 nights a week (Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays).

Mondays & Thursdays 7pm - 9.30pm Open drop in session at TimeOut.Young people can have access to arts and crafts, issue based projects, cooking in the kitchen, wide screen television, Xbox live, pool table, video projector and whiteboard for Wii games and movies and a quiet area chillout room. There is also a computer with internet access and a printer, so if they need to print something out, send an email or write something up they can do it. As well as having Mac computers, there is software Final Cut Express and iMovie for film and stop motion animation making and special software. Logic pro studio and garage band is available to make music, mp3’s or own ringtones and there are computers and access to the internet to do homework.The issue based activities young people can participate in explore topics like, relationships, drug & alcohol misuse, racism, homophobia, sex, healthy living and making a difference in your community. TimeOut also run trips and put on events, such as Keynsham music mash-up, local band nights, sports activities, art, photography, film making, dance workshops, graffiti, and provide cv support. Wednesdays 7pm - 9pmThis is a project based session aimed at developing young people’s life skills and can include workshops on confidence, bullying, cyber-bullying, health, drugs, personal effectiveness, team work, arts and creative school development, baby sitting course, first aid course, healthy eating and nutrition, communication, film making, dance workshops and decision making, politics, counselling, befriending and advice training, skills for life and independent living.

A tremendous start to the Festival this year with now over 220 acts having applied to perform. There are now far more than we can take for all four stages! These range from the local community groups to local bands, national professional bands and, a new development, international bands and artistes.

Amongst those we hope might actually perform at the Festival are a South African township band, the great latin-tango based Violentango from Buenos Aries, and the winner of the 2011 Hungarian X Factor! But we have some fabulous up and coming musicians from all over the UK too. We haven’t forgotten local bands, Keynsham, Bristol and Bath should be well represented in the final line up. We promise there will be something for everybody! The deluge of applications has meant we have saved money on advertising and made a more extensive use of the social media for our publicity.

The week leading up to the festival will also be very exciting with events happening every night and quite often more than one event per night. Keynsham Orchestra will be back this year, so will Opera in the Park and the late night Cinema Under the Stars.We welcome the involvement and support of The Talbot and The Ship as venues. Thanks to Transition Keynsham there will be a second film night during the week and, with Keynsham Action Network, we have a completely new and potentially huge event with Satish Kumar in the Park on the Friday evening. That could mean five Festival events on the Friday night!

Another new feature this year will be a showcase evening of acoustic music by Steve Parkhouse of Bristol’s Jelli Records at The Ship – probably on the Tuesday night. Steve of course manages our Bandstand stage on the Sunday.

Also on the cards are workshops in the local schools and the involvement of Keynsham Leisure Centre. Even better news is Ian McGill Transport and Taylor-Wimpey have agreed to their continued and generous support of the Festival and we hope our other sponsors will soon follow, and will be joined by new sponsors such as CURO and Car Quip.

The TimeOut Stage is going to be bigger and better this year and is now going to be managed by a group of former and current Wellsway school students – three of them currently completing Event Management degree courses at universities.

Events will be publicised as they become confirmed – watch the Festival website currently being re-vamped for this year, thanks to Simon at SOS Design, and for more immediate news follow developments and see snippets of some of the possible bands on Twitter and Facebook. Have your say too!

KEYNSHAM & DISTRICT DIAL-A-RIDE

2013 is the 10th Anniversary of Keynsham & District Dial-a-Ride who provides aff ordable, safe and reliable transport locally and to the surrounding villages.Dial-a-Ride operate a door to door service in Keynsham and Saltford between 8am and 6pm from Monday to Friday, Bank Holidays are excluded.Between April and June there will be a Dial-a-Ride service operating on the 2nd Saturday of the month to coincide with the Farmers Market and the Arts/ Crafts event at the Scout Hut in Ashton Way. The Saturday service will operate from 9am to 12.30pmTo use the Dial-a-Ride service you must be a registered member which is FREE.Mini Bus Hire is available to groups and organisations where you can hire a vehicle to take members out on a half or full day trip or perhaps you would like to go and see a show in the theatre.

Do you fancy getting fit but don’t want to spend time indoors? Then have you considered using the Keynsham Multi sports pitches in the Memorial Park?

The hire of tennis courts is FREE week days. The gates will be unlocked Monday-Friday, 10am-3.45pm. They are also available evenings/weekends, by collecting a key (refundable deposit £10 required) from the Council offices at 15-17 Temple Street, Keynsham, between 9.00am and 4.00pm Mondays to Fridays.

The multi sports site also caters for five a side football and netball (refundable key deposit £20 required).The costs of hiring these courts are:Five a side/netball court£10.70 per hour per court - adults £6.60 per hour per court - juniors Floodlights - £3.00 extra for adults and £1.70 for juniors.Juniors under the age of 12 will need adult supervision at all times.

KEYNSHAM train station projectIn 2013, the Keynsham in Bloom Working Party in conjunction with Severnside Community Rail Partnership will be tidying up Keynsham Train Station and making it a more welcoming place for visitors as they arrive in Keynsham.

One part of the train station project is to include some planting schemes including barrier baskets.We would very much like the businesses and community groups of Keynsham to be part of our project by sponsoring a planter. The sum of £100 will secure sponsorship of a barrier basket for future years. Plus, this initial sum will also cover the cost of planting in the first year. Future planting will be supported by the In Bloom Working Party, Keynsham Town Council and fundraising activities. KEYNSHAM CEMETERYan unwelcome resurrection

In the Winter newsletter an article on Keynsham Cemetery – the beginning was printed relating to the choice of site for a new Cemetery during 1875/6. It ended with “It is thought, by the experts, that this villa was large enough to be classed as a palace – but that is another story...”

This is an extract from that other story:-The decision by the Vestry Meeting to buy two and a half acres of land on Durley Hill was made on 23 February 1877. As soon as work began on the foundations of the mortuary chapel the builders encountered the remains of a Roman building.Long afterwards it was written “regretted that when it was first discovered that the foundations of a Roman house of great size were within the area of the new purchase, no steps were taken to preserve it. That these remains were known to exist in 1877 there is clear evidence”.Despite evidence of potential problems ahead, burials began at once in the lower (eastern) half of the Cemetery and continued for over 40 years until most of two magnificent corridors, with their adjacent rooms containing fine tessellated floors, were destroyed.One fortunate circumstance prevented the destruction from extending to the whole of the site. When the land was bought in 1877 the owner of adjoining property on the western side managed to get an embargo or restriction placed on the use of the upper part for burials. This restriction lasted until 1908 when Keynsham Parish Council paid a sum of money for it to be removed. It was not until 12 years later that this part of the site began to be used for interments.In June 1921 a respected Somerset historian and archaeologist, heard by accident of the difficulty the grave diggers were having in Keynsham. They complained of the hard work because of old floors that had to be “bumped through” and of walls that had to be pulled out. He visited the Cemetery and watched the sexton, who was making a grave, destroy the ends of a

fl ight of steps that came in the way. What could be done? There were too many burials for an ordinary excavation to expose and preserve what remained of the building. However, help was at hand by chance, from an unexpected quarter. In 1921, J.S. Fry & Sons bought land on the Hams in Keynsham to build a factory. When preparing the foundations, two Roman stone coffi ns were discovered. They contained a male and female skeleton, and that containing the male was lined with lead. This was the burial of important and wealthy persons. A leading archaeologist was called in to excavate the burials.The coffi ns were on view for some time and aroused great local interest. It is thought that this fi nd was a major factor in infl uencing Keynsham Parish Council to allow excavations to be made in the Cemetery. Soon after the discovery of the coffi ns, further work on the foundations of Fry’s new factory uncovered a Roman building. It was much smaller than the villa in the Cemetery but was equipped with a bath suite appropriate to the civilised Roman way of life. Clearly there would be advantages in combining excavation of this site with the larger operation in the Cemetery. In the end, it turned out that Fry’s was the major source of funds. It is doubtful if Keynsham alone would have raised enough to complete the excavation at the cemetery, and certainly not enough to lift and conserve the fi ne mosaic panels. This work alone was said to have cost £600 (a lot of money in 1924) was paid for entirely

by Fry’s (although the items were and remain the property of the Local Authority).An excavation committee was set up to raise fund and manage the work which ended in July 1924. – and that was the end of the Keynsham Roman Villa.It was published “it is a matter for regret that this Roman house could not be preserved in situ, after it had been excavated, but it was obviously impossible in the circumstances. Its position in a public cemetery where the ground was badly need for burials made its destruction inevitable, and all that could be done was to uncover what remained and make as complete a record of it as possible before the burials encroached on it any further. All the tessellated fl oors that were suffi ciently intact to be worth preserving have been carefully taken up and the wall foundations have been removed by the cemetery authorities to make the ground more fi t for its purpose.The regret is felt perhaps even more keenly today. Archaeologists now recognise that Keynsham Villa was not just one of your average villas, but in size and quality of its architecture and mosaic fl oors can better be described as a “palace”. It seems fi tting that the estate attached to the villa eventually descended to ownership by Edith, last Anglo-Saxon Queen of England.

Pomegranate

The smell of freshly brewed coff ee, a smiling owner and a colourful background of works by local artists provided a welcoming atmosphere for our interview with Nedim Orak, the owner of Pomegranate.

Nedim comes from Kurdistan in Eastern Turkey where it is common practice for children to learn traditional and local business from an early age. As one of seven children, he started working as a nine year old schoolboy in local cafés and restaurants earning much needed ‘pocket money’. He not only ran errands but waited tables and it was this which inspired him to gain experience further afi eld than his village, working in restaurants in Turkey and eventually in England.

In May 2007, with a Kurdish friend as a partner, 19 Temple Street was renovated and transformed into Pomegranate.

He is now sole owner of the café, employing a chef to help with the ever increasing number of patrons. Recipes are readily adapted and modifi ed, dependent upon whatever local and Fairtrade produce is available, to provide a delicious array of Middle Eastern/Mediterranean dishes.

Why Fairtrade? Coming from a rural, less developed part of the world, Nedim, as a child, was aware of the inequalities that existed in rural Turkey, had fi rst-hand experience of poverty and the desire to improve conditions for local communities. He fi rst became

aware of the Fairtrade Movement about 8 years ago after watching the fi lm ‘Black Gold’, which shows how consumers can improve the well-being of producers in the developing world, by choosing to buy Fairtrade Products.

With this in mind and his awareness of the importance of using locally produced meat and vegetables, Nedim purchases all his meat from the Newton St. Loe Farm, and sources his vegetables from the Keynsham based ‘Severn Project’. The ‘Orchard Pig’ company supplies his apple juice, using only Somerset apples. He uses Fairtrade sugar and his honey comes from ‘Heavenly Hedgerows’ in Keynsham and herbal teas and hot chocolate from an ethical company in Fishponds, the ‘Essential Workers Cooperative’. The coff ee beans are roasted by ‘Extract Coff ee Roasters’ based in Iron Acton.

Q. Do you live in Keynsham? A. Although I have never lived in Keynsham I have grown up here as my nan lives here. I have always lived in Bristol.

Q. How long have you been a youth worker? A. I started volunteering at my local youth centre in Bristol when I was 19, but I have been a youth worker in Keynsham since February 2004.

Q. What interested you in the job? A. I enjoy working with young people, helping them to sort out issues. I feel I can relate to them as I used to attend a youth centre as a young person and have helped many young people through different issues when I attended.

Q. Has the job changed since you were appointed? A. The job always changes and you will never have two night’s the same. When I started I worked for Bath & North East Somerset Council but now we are under Keynsham Town Council. I feel they are starting to understand young people a lot more and encouraging them to let their voices be heard.

Q. What do you enjoy most? A. I enjoy knowing I have helped and supported the young people of today to get what they want, need or deserve from life.

Q. What do you enjoy the least? A. The late nights, as I have another job.

Q. What are the main benefits of your job? A. The satisfaction that you have helped others.

Q. What do you feel the future holds for Keynsham Youth Service/Youth Work?A. Hopefully to carry on helping the young people to overcome different issues they face in their day to day lives. I feel if the Youth Service was to go, there would be nothing for young people to do in Keynsham and they would get bored and anti-social behaviour may increase. The Youth Service has been around for hundreds of years - let’s hope it carries on for a lot longer.

Q. What are the main challenges you face in your job? A. Going from a teenager into adulthood is hard for them to understand what they want to do. Young people can be challenging and hard to engage but it is finding that common ground to work on. I have been verbally abused and witnessed other aggressive behaviour, but it is about how to prevent it reaching that stage.

Q. What do you think the best things are about Keynsham? A. I really enjoy the fact Keynsham comes together as a Community to hold different events i.e. Keynsham Music Festival and the Youth Fest. There is a welcoming feel at these events.
