The Psychology of Revision

Page 22: Key Stage 4 Learning Strategies Evening - …culchethhigh.org.uk/.../11/Learning_Strategies_Evening_November_20… · •Y10/Y11 Learning Strategies Evening ... not including GCSE

Where should students

revise?Welcome to the myth!

Page 23: Key Stage 4 Learning Strategies Evening - …culchethhigh.org.uk/.../11/Learning_Strategies_Evening_November_20… · •Y10/Y11 Learning Strategies Evening ... not including GCSE

Not popular, but extremely effective

Where should students

revise?

Page 24: Key Stage 4 Learning Strategies Evening - …culchethhigh.org.uk/.../11/Learning_Strategies_Evening_November_20… · •Y10/Y11 Learning Strategies Evening ... not including GCSE

‘learning efficiency’

Page 25: Key Stage 4 Learning Strategies Evening - …culchethhigh.org.uk/.../11/Learning_Strategies_Evening_November_20… · •Y10/Y11 Learning Strategies Evening ... not including GCSE

How can you improve this?

If you decide at the beginning

how long you will work for, with a clock,

then as your brain knows the end is coming,

the graph rises towards the end

Page 26: Key Stage 4 Learning Strategies Evening - …culchethhigh.org.uk/.../11/Learning_Strategies_Evening_November_20… · •Y10/Y11 Learning Strategies Evening ... not including GCSE

How can you improve this even

more?

If you break up a 2-hour session,

into 4 shorter sessions,

each of about 25-minutes,

with a short planned break between them,

then it is even better.

Compare the next 2 graphs:

Page 27: Key Stage 4 Learning Strategies Evening - …culchethhigh.org.uk/.../11/Learning_Strategies_Evening_November_20… · •Y10/Y11 Learning Strategies Evening ... not including GCSE

One solid session

4 shorter sessions

The yellow area shows the improvement.

Page 28: Key Stage 4 Learning Strategies Evening - …culchethhigh.org.uk/.../11/Learning_Strategies_Evening_November_20… · •Y10/Y11 Learning Strategies Evening ... not including GCSE

Look at the graph below:

It shows how much your brain can recall later.

It rises for about 10 minutes …and then falls.

Page 29: Key Stage 4 Learning Strategies Evening - …culchethhigh.org.uk/.../11/Learning_Strategies_Evening_November_20… · •Y10/Y11 Learning Strategies Evening ... not including GCSE

if you quickly re-revise after 10 minutes,

then it falls more slowly. Analyse the new

graph:

However,

Page 30: Key Stage 4 Learning Strategies Evening - …culchethhigh.org.uk/.../11/Learning_Strategies_Evening_November_20… · •Y10/Y11 Learning Strategies Evening ... not including GCSE

if you quickly re-revise again, after 1 day,

then it falls even more slowly.

Even better,

Page 31: Key Stage 4 Learning Strategies Evening - …culchethhigh.org.uk/.../11/Learning_Strategies_Evening_November_20… · •Y10/Y11 Learning Strategies Evening ... not including GCSE

if you quickly re-revise again, after 1 week,

then it falls even more slowly.

And even better still,

Page 32: Key Stage 4 Learning Strategies Evening - …culchethhigh.org.uk/.../11/Learning_Strategies_Evening_November_20… · •Y10/Y11 Learning Strategies Evening ... not including GCSE

10 minutes

1 day

1 week

…and then 1 month.

So the best intervals for ‘topping-up’,

by reviewing or briefly re-revising

are:

Learning by Heart

• Some things you just have to learn… chemical formulae, historical dates, spellings, quotations etc.

• Check you have learnt it by

- Looking

- Covering

- Writing and then

- Checking

• Rote learning should be kept to a minimum

Crib Cards

• Crib cards are postcard sized and can be used to condense a lot of information.

• Increasingly ‘Post it’ notes are being used. These can be stuck up all around the house.

• A range of different techniques can be used on crib cards.

Some weird ones…

1. Record yourself talking, and play it back. Make a podcast!

2. Pretend you’re giving a lecture on a topic. Deliver it to an imaginary audience in your bedroom or film yourself and watch it back.

3. Go for a run. Think only about one revision topic during your run.

4. Tell someone else all about the topic you have revised. Get them to test you.

5. Teach someone else about a topic. Let them ask questions
