Welcome to the Annapolis Book Festival! This event, now in its fifteenth year, is an opportunity for the Key School community to host what has become one of the premier events in Annapolis. With over two dozen author panels, musical performances throughout the day, and a dynamic offering of activities for children, there is literally something for everyone to enjoy. Our Town Crier will be making announcements throughout the day about the events taking place all over our beautiful campus. The Annapolis Book Festival would not be possible without the commitment of the Key School’s Parents’ Association, and the army of volunteers who spend countless hours over the course of the fall, winter and early spring planning and organizing the day’s activities. Their support is essential, and the Annapolis Book Festival you are enjoying today could never have been realized without their dedication and support. On behalf of The Key School, and all of our visitors to campus, I want to thank all of our volunteers, and this year’s Co-Chairs of the Festival, Cliona O’Callaghan and Emily Oland Squires. 10:00 am – Income Inequality in Today’s AmericaBased on years of research on families residing in Baltimore public housing, author Stefanie DeLuca, in Coming of Age in the Other America, concludes that despite overwhelming odds, somedisadvantaged urban youth do achieve upward mobility. Author Kathryn J. Edin’s research in $2.00 a Day: Living on Almost Nothing in America, shows the number of American families living on virtually no cash income has skyrocketed to over one and a half million households. Baltimore-based author, Stacia L. Brown moderates.

11:00 am – Criminal InjusticeSerial, a podcast discussing the murder case of Hae Min Lee by Baltimore youth Adnan Syed, did not tell the whole story. Rabia Chaudry, in Adnan’s Story: The Search for Truth and Justice after Serial, attempts to show justice is not yet achieved in this case.Brian W. Stolarz, author of Grace and Justice on Death Row: The Race Against Time and Texas to Free an Innocent Man, is a lawyer who worked to prove the innocence of death row inmate Alfred Dewayne Brown. WBAL reporter Jayne Miller moderates.

12:00 pm – Mark K. Shriver: The Real Pope FrancisAuthor Mark K. Shriver retraces Pope Francis’s journey from a young Jesuit priest in Buenos Aires, Argentina, to the leader of the Catholic Church. Based on interviews with the men and women who knew him simply as Jorge Mario Bergoglio, Pilgrimage: My Search for the Real Pope Francis, follows the Pope’s calling to feed the hungry and shelter the homeless. Dan Attridge, dean at Catholic University’s Columbus School of Law, moderates.

1:30 pm – General Michael Hayden on Terror and IntelligenceGeneral Michael V. Hayden was at the top of the NSA, then the CIA, during the ten years when targeted killings, enhanced interrogation, rendition of suspects to black sites, and detentions at Guantanamo were occuring. Most of these practices he inherited and scaled back, but in Playing to the Edge: American Intelligence in the Age of Terror, he outlines those methods as the only way to keep America safe in an age of terror. Stephen Wrage, U.S. Naval Academy professor and scholar of ethics and American foreign policy, moderates.

3:00 pm – Thomas Dolby: Breaking the Barrier Between Music and TechnologyThomas Dolby’s Grammy-nominated hit songs include “She Blinded Me With Science” and “Hyperactive!” The Speed of Sound chronicles his musical life during the 1980s, his business ventures in Silicon Valley during the ‘90s, and his creation of the mobile phone synthesizer at the turn of this century. WTMD’s Alex Cortright moderates.

10:00 am – Fair Labor LawyerAuthor Marlene Trestman profiles the life of Supreme Court advocate Bessie Margolin and her push to modernize American labor policy. Raised in a Jewish orphanage in New Orleans, Margolin drafted rules for establishing American military tribunals at the Nuremburg trials, and, as a founding member of the National Organization for Women, championed the Equal Pay Act.

11:00 am – Fiction: Thrills and ChillsBest-selling author Jeffery Deaver, has created The Burial Hour, the 13th suspense novel featuring the brilliant criminologist Lincoln Rhyme. Best-selling author John Gilstrap brings back Jonathan Grave, a former member of the Army Delta Force who is now a hostage rescue specialist in Friendly Fire. In Daniel Palmer’s latest page-turner Forgive Me, private investigator Angie DeRose unravels the shocking truth about her parents and her past. 12:00 pm – Unseen SacrificesIn The Dust of Kandahar: A Diplomat Among Warriors in Afghanistan, Ambassador Jonathan S. Addleton describes the everyday struggle of American soldiers, local dignitaries, government officials, and religious leaders all embattled in America’s longest war. Author Rachel Starnes, in The War at Home: A Wife’s Search for Peace (and Other Missions Impossible), recounts her personal story as a military wife and what it really means to be left behind. John Beed, a senior U.S. diplomat on the faculty of the National Defense University, moderates.

2:00 pm – The Golden Age of the American NewspaperEditors Stephens Broening and Frederic B. Hill bring to life a collection of essays from former editors and reporters at the Baltimore Sun. The Life of Kings: The Baltimore Sun and the Golden Age of the American Newspaper looks back on the daily journal’s heyday as it covered Washington politics and local city clashes. Environmental reporter Tom Horton, a contributor to The Life of Kings, joins the discussion. Former Baltimore Sun chief political reporter and current WYPR senior news analyst Fraser Smith moderates.

3:00 pm – A History of Guns in AmericaHistorian Pamela Haag, in The Gunning of America: Business and the Making of the American Gun Culture, argues that America’s cultural focus on guns began with the Winchester company’s marketing techniques in the mid-1800s. In Melancholy Accidents: Three Centuries of Stray Bullets and Bad Luck, author Peter Manseau has compiled an anthology of reports where the accidental discharging of firearms led to disastrous outcomes.

10:00 am – Become Your Best Self with Jonathan FieldsThis is not your typical tell-you-how-to-live-a-good-life book. Author Jonathan Fields draws from science and spirituality in How to Live a Good Life: Soulful Stories, Surprising Science and Practical Wisdom, providing practical tips and examples on how to live with positivity, cultivate meaningful relationships, and contribute to society in the most effective ways. Key School learning specialist Sarah Judd moderates.

11:00 am – Veterans and Civilians on Iraq and AfghanistanJoin contributors to Retire the Colors: Veterans & Civilians on Iraq and Afghanistan Colin D. Halloran, Lauren Kay Halloran, Eva KL Miller, and Stewart Moss as they read from the book and discuss their behind-the-scenes experiences of war and its aftermath. Editor of Retire the Colors and Iraqi war veteran Dario DiBattistamoderates.

12:00 pm – First WomenIn her book First Women: The Grace and Power of America’s Modern First Ladies, New York Times best-selling author and former White House correspondent Kate Andersen Brower interviews residence staff, social secretaries, friends, and political advisers to provide revealing insights into the lives of the real modern power executives at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue—the First Ladies. The Honorable Catherine O’Malley and former Maryland First Lady moderates.

2:00 pm – All American BoysAuthors Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely tell the fictional story of two teenagers—one black, one white—and the consequences resulting from one violent act that racially divides not only their school and local community but the entire country. This book is a 2016 Coretta Scott King Author Honor book, and the recipient of the Walter Dean Myers Award for Outstanding Children’s Literature. Ages 12 and up.

3:00 pm – Charm City Sports StoriesAlejandro Danois, in The Boys of Dunbar: A Story of Love, Hope and Basketball, tells the inspiring true story of a high school basketball team that overcame desperate times in 1980s Baltimore to produce four NBA players and gave hope back to the city. Author Daniel Nathan’s Baltimore Sports: Stories from Charm City is a compilation of essays on the “big deal sports things” (the Ripkins and Michael Phelps) as well as the more obscure things (duckpin bowling and boxer Joe Gans) all related to Baltimore’s sports history. Key School’s athletic director Brian Boyd moderates.

ROOM 4: SCIENCE & LIBRARY CENTERLIBRARY

10:00 am – Historical FictionAuthor Marie Benedict, in The Other Einstein, writes of the woman who married and worked with one of the greatest scientists ever. Author Greer Macallister, in Girl in Disguise, shares the story of Kate Warne, the first Pinkerton detective, and her little-known triumphs that helped sway the fate of the country during a time of crisis. Historical novelist and Festival fan favorite Erika Robuck moderates.

11:00 am – Fiction: Coming of AgeTwo half-sisters—one black, one white—come together on an epic and sometimes mystical road trip in search of a wayward father and a promised inheritance. An orphaned teenager tries to keep her siblings out of foster care, and save the family business in a fast-paced, sometimes hilarious tale of grit. These stories of young girls in the south trying to create their own versions of independence and, ultimately, freedom are beautifully written by first time novelist Suzanne Feldman in Absalom’s Daughters, and by Festival favorite Louis Bayard in Lucky Strikes. Bethanne Patrick, author and creator of #FridayReads, moderates.

12:00 pm – Café Neandertal: The Riddle of Our Long-Lost CousinsAuthor Beebe Bahrami in her book Café Neandertal: Excavating Our Past in One of Europe’s Most Ancient Places, examines the work of archaeologists on the research, exploration and recovery of man’s ancient ancestors. She asks who were the Neandertals, why did they disappear almost 35,000 years ago, and what connections do they share with modern man? Key School teacher Diana Toebbe moderates.

1:00 pm – The Art and Craft of Short Fiction: A WorkshopMeet published fiction writers and editors of literary journals, Sybil Baker, Margaret Hutton, Richard McCann, Barbara Klein Moss, and Stewart Moss, who will read from their work and discuss topics including how to get started; the demands of short fiction, as opposed to a novella or novel; how to create a character-driven story; the importance of the opening paragraph; how to show, rather than tell; and the process of getting published. Dini Duran Karasik, founding editor of the literary journal Origins and founding director of the Writer’s Loft of Kensington, moderates.

2:00 pm – In the Great Green Room: A Biography of Margaret Wise BrownAuthor Amy Gary tells the life story of Margaret Wise Brown, the author of the children’s book classics Goodnight Moon and The Runaway Bunny. Her eccentric and exceptional life is depicted through personal letters and diaries. Key’s First School Division Head Paula Morse moderates.

10:00 am – Storytelling: Tales from Other LandsJoin Key School’s resident storyteller Katherine Haas as she tells fascinating stories from different cultures, races and ethnicities. All ages.

10:30 am – Do Not Open the Box!Join author Timothy Young as he reads of Benny’s curiosity surround-ing a big cardboard box and his dilemma of whether or not to break the rules taped to the outside in Do Not Open the Box! Ages 4-6.

11:00 am – I Dissent: Ruth Bader Ginsburg Makes Her MarkHear the story of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and her lifetime arguing against inequality and unfair treatment on behalf of all American citizens. Joining author Debbie Levy will be 8-year old Michele Threefoot, an internet sensation following her portrayal of Ruth Bader Ginsburg on Superhero Day at school.

11:30 am – UnhookedGwendolyn Allister is kidnapped and brought to an island inhabited with fairies, a dishonest ship captain, and savage beasts in this young adult work of fantasy written by Lisa Maxwell.

1:00 pm – Maryland’s Chesapeake: How the Bay Shaped a CuisineThe Baltimore Dining Duo, Kathy Wielech Patterson and Neal Patterson, explore the culinary heritage of Maryland and how it has been shaped from the bounty of the Chesapeake Bay. Hear how Maryland’s seafood, along with other famous dishes such as the Smith Island Cake, was developed due to the unique lifestyle lived right along the water. Chef Keith Long of Harvest Wood Grill + Tap joins the Dining Duo for a cooking demo. David Pow, owner and chef of local eateries Soul and Blue Rooster Café, moderates.

2:00 pm – A History of Sports in AmericaThe ultimate panel for sports lovers of all genres and ages! Gary Belsky’s On the Origins of Sports looks at the original rules of the world’s most popular sports, including football, soccer and mixed martial arts. Cait Murphy, in A History of American Sports in 100 Objects, details the stories of the people, events and things that have framed sports in America. Key’s Head of School Matthew Nespole moderates.

Charles Dowd is the creator of Lilith Dark- One Little Girl, One BIG Adventure and The A to Z Guide to Jobs for Girls. Lilith Dark is an all-ages, girl-positive, dark-fantasy adventure series following the ongoing adventures of Lilith Dark, a little girl with a wild imagination, a geeky big brother, a boy-crazy sister, a rottweiler named Kitty, and a tree full of beasties in her backyard.

Nick Davis, of Alt World Studios, is an Englishman, an all-ages author and sometime artist currently living on the East Coast of the USA. Meet the Baltimore author of The Tether Saga, The Wonder Tales, Fabula Exposition, and A Teddy Bear Tale. Nick will be reading from and signing his book Hero Ted at 1:00 pm.

Keely Imai is a freelance artist and shameless hobby monster with a background in illustration and animation, and works to manifest her deep-seated love of fantasy and sci-fi on paper and on the screen. Operating locally under the name KeyLime Creations, she has studied the fundamentals of art at Savannah College of Art and Design and

Anne Arundel Community College, and her work has been featured in juried art shows at both institutions. Keely has one driving force behind her artistic ambitions, whether she’s drawing, painting, sculpting, or animating--to use her art to connect with people and help them connect with each other, and to find our humanity in the realism and the fantasy of visual art.

Cindy Goh is the author of Samuelism C Starts with Cookie, a light-hearted comic about an Asian-American family with four kids and a dog. Samuelism C Starts with Cookie is a collection of cartoons inspired by real-life events and humorous quotes by Samuel, a little boy with a big personality. Each comic strip represents a memory, seen through the eyes of the author/artist Cindy Goh.
