About us

ISAP, a not-for-profit organization incorporated in 2001 under Section 25 of the Indian Companies Act, was conceived with the aim to foster and sustain resource development and livelihood enhancement for rural communities. ISAP has a dedicated full time staff of more than 200 people across 25 field offices in more than 17 states.

Having worked for more than a decade in agriculture development, ISAP, expanded the domain strengths to contribute towards holistic rural development. This meant working to address the need to enhance productivity of the rural population for sustainable livelihoods and empowerment. We determined rural health and skill development to be the most critical intervention areas in this context. ISAP today assesses challenges and constraints faced by the poor and marginalized communities and designs need-based initiatives for rural communities under domain areas: 1. Agriculture Development & Institution Building for Farmers

2. Rural Healthcare

3. Skill Development

4. Water Management

5. Dairy & Animal Husbandry

6. Public Utility

The agriculture thematic areas covered by ISAP include ICT in agriculture, value-chains, water management, entrepreneurship development, dairy and animal husbandry, training and agriculture end to end solutions for the rural communities. We work with more than 200,000 farming families at any point in time in 15 plus states and have 25 field offices for implementation of our various projects. We have several innovative interventions like running a state level Kisan call centre (KCC) for farmers of Madhya Pradesh, Community Radio Station at Sironj (MP), and Entrepreneurship Development Centers for Govt of India at 10 locations. In addition, we implement end to end agriculture projects in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh. We are in the process of setting up 4 radio stations in Rajasthan and scaling up our agriculture development activity to all states. We work with multiple Departments in the Govt of India as well as several state Governments.

We have been intervening in the Rural Healthcare space since 2009 and our vision is to build, promote, develop and manage healthcare facilities and resources in order to achieve equitable and holistic healthcare across India. The priority areas are establishing elderly care support services, skill development in healthcare sector, consultancy services for various healthcare organizations, preventive and public health. We have done more than a dozen medical outreach camps and have constructed two 50 bedded Community Health Centres. We have installed more than 26 village level arsenic purification units. We have also set up Tele-health centers in Lucknow ,UP and in Gulbarga, Karnataka amongst other activities. We are scaling our work in Drinking Water as well as in Community Health Centre space.

In the Skill Development thematic area, we are working in rural areas in providing employability training in vocational skills including self-employment opportunities for training, placement and mentoring of rural youth. We have tied up with a significant number of corporates for the placement of the trained candidates. We are working in this area with the Ministry of Rural Development and with CSR funding from various corporate.

Information & Communication Technology (ICT) in Agriculture

India has 278 million farmers, who are actively engaged in agriculture. There are 0.12 million extension workers to provide technical support to the farmers. It is a huge task to reach each and every farmer by extension workers and use of ICT in agriculture becomes imperative. ISAP is one of the pioneers in India to use ICT in agriculture through Kisan Call Centres, Community Radio Stations and mobile telephony services.

The Kisan Call centre is a good application of ICT in agriculture. It uses Open source software. Experts answer farmer queries on best agronomic practices and pest outbreaks. These queries are analysed and if there is any endemic, timely advice can be beamed by the state agencies through TV, radio etc.

KCC, Bhopal was set up with support from Govt of Madhya Pradesh in 2008. It has answered 5,00,000 queries during 2008 - 2011. Increasing queries every year shows the relevance of KCC and its popularity among the farmers. Advance MIS system captures entire milieu of advisory services provided and at the same time provides backend data support to the knowledge workers.

The Domain Experts answer calls related to agriculture, market prices, weather forecast, govt schemes etc.

KCC received Manthan Award South Asia in 2009-10 under category e- Enterprise & Livelihood

Smallholders typically divide their plots into different crops: rain fed cereal crops, vegetables •and cash crops, depending on availability of water. But land holdings are getting smaller with increasing population and there is constraint on land being utilized for seedling production.

ISAP has been setting up agricultural nurseries and Vermi-compost through its projects and •has collaborated with government organization to set up nurseries at 160 locations all over the country.

In order to cultivate multiple crops in a year farmers need planting material and FYM (Farm Yard Manure) readily available at the start of the season. To avoid glut in the market they need to plan their crops well in advance. Slight changes in the production and harvest schedule can benefit the farmer immensely.

The Certified Crop Adviser Program (CCA) • is a training, evaluation and certification program for agriculture professionals with the objective of strengthening the agricultural extension system of the country. It can help to bridge the gap between lab and the land.

It is very critical to update the existing knowledge of the agri extension workers in order to provide sound farmer advisory. CCA program offers much needed fortification to the existing extension system through continuous education and providing certification at par with international standards.

The American Society of Agronomy (ASA), which has been working for over hundred years towards the development of Agriculture in USA and other countries, runs Certified Crop Adviser (CCA) program in various countries. ISAP has partnered with ASA to create a cadre of skilled agri experts in India in order to provide sound advisory to the farmers and increase productivity.

RURAL HEALTH HELPLINE

MEDICAL CAMPS

Rural health helpline is ICT enabled & is a modest effort to deliver essential health care advice for the people living in hinterland areas and have no access to regular medical support system.

We are running 2 Contraceptive Helplines for Saathiya and Dimpa programs of USAID in Uttar Pradesh. This is a Multi-Seater Health Helpline at Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh)

Through these helplines, we are providing support to the family planning users from Saathiya and Dimpa network providers. Trained health professionals provide information and answer to basic questions regarding Family Planning, Reproductive Health, Sexually Transmitted Infections, HIV/AIDS to program target groups. They also refer callers to appropriate Saathiya and Dimpa injectable contraceptive service providers in their respective towns. Call centre has handled 1 million calls since its inception in 2007.

(Focus states West Bengal/Orissa/Uttar Pradesh/Bihar/Jharkhand)More than a dozen medical camps have been done with over 35,000 beneficiaries.

ISAP is also running TB helpline called ‘DOTS-Mitra’ in Gulbarga, Karnataka for a Project funded by USAID

It is estimated that around 21% Indians are affected by water-borne diseases annually. The 195,813 habitations in the country are affected by chemical contamination of water. The major chemical parameters of concern are fluoride and arsenic. To address this problem, ISAP has taken up this initiative of setting up of arsenic and fluoride removal plants in acutely affected areas.

Arsenic is, historically known as poison. Intake of drinking water having arsenic concentration beyond the permissible limit of 0.05 mg/ lit has deleterious effects on human health. In India, the problem of arsenic is most acute in West Bengal besides Assam, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and Chhatisgarh. More than 10 % of the total population of the State is exposed to the above risk. Seven of the nineteen districts of West Bengal have been reported to have ground water arsenic concentrations above 0.05 mg/Lit. To address this problem, we have set up arsenic removal plants in the badly affected areas of the country.

Each plant has 2000 liters capacity storage tanks to serve 250-300 families every day. User Committees, each comprising of 8-15 local people as members at each of the locations ensures the effective usage and maintenance of the plant. National Test House’ – an enterprise under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution has validated the effectiveness of these plants in their ‘Water testing report’.

Dairy & Animal Husbandry

Dairy farming is a reliable source of livelihood for farmers. To transform livelihood into an opportunity, ISAP has initiated livestock breeding and critical support services, enabling poor farmers to produce high yielding animals at their doorsteps. This includes establishment of artificial Insemination Centers to improve the Genetic Material of the local Cattle and Buffaloes.

Beside this the farmers are also made aware of the importance of Mineral Feeding as feed supplement as the soil of particular region is found to be deficit in certain minerals , which is fed as feed supplement by feeding area specific mineral mixture.

In addition, the farmers are advised through least cost formula feeding practices like ration Balancing Programme and Total Milch Ration etc.

Women SHG are assisted in keeping the Dairy cattle to get sustenance income. In some parts ofthe country Goatary activities are also initiated.
