    9 Key Frames- The Rise

These are the 9 key frames for my creative artefact. I had my actors perform each

scene as I photographed the action taking place. Through this I selected the best

photos that represented a chronological sequence for my film, The Rise, andthat demonstrated a clear narrative in support of my script.

    Key frame 3

Jessie becomes less patient, and brings the gun

closer to Lenz. As an audience we can see she is

warning Lenz and is annoyed that he is

doubting her though his smug grin. There are

sharp and quick sounds of non diegetic musicplaying in the background, to rebuild tension to

the scene, fitted to the mystery of whether

Jessie will shoot or not. This key moment

represents her attempt to prove that she is

serious as she has extended her arms and has

her fingers over the trigger. This low angled

shot is intended to make her appear powerful

and stronger than the antagonist, fitting the

codes and conventions in a film, where the

protagonist is favoured by the audience and so

pleasure is brought to viewers when they are

defeating the antagonist. The lighting is brighter above Jessies head, which is a

semiotic that she is seen in a positive light and has the ability to restore the

equilibrium, following Todorovs theory. The bottom half of the lift is dark and

dull, lacking the same lighting that we see above Jessies head. This is anothersemiotic categorising Lenzs character to bring darkness to the film, as he isbelow on the ground. This represents Jessie to be a kind and strong teenage

protagonist, similar to the character of Joe in Super 8. This shot was influenced

by the film where Joe is positioned in light as he says his speech, while the alien

lifts him, however there is darkness and fog behind the alien.

    Key Frame 4

In this moment, the action takes place,

supported by dynamic drumming music that is

non diegetic, reflecting the abrupt move when

Lenz attempts to snatch the gun out of Jessies

hand while her back is turned. There is a eye

line match of Lenzs eyes, switched back to acut-in shot of the hand in her gun, and back to

his eyes, to indicate he is about to reach for it.

Lenzs yells out in dialogue, BI*CH!, which isreflective of the type of character he is. This

highlights that he does not have mercy, even

after Jessie chooses to spare him his life. As a

director, I intended to reveal through his

makeup and positioning that he is injured and

not in a fit state to fight, however his ego gets

the better of him and he is still trying to be

sneaky as Jessie turns. This is reflecting how he

is over masculine and fits the persona of men

and teenage boys. Teenage boys are often seen to be stronger and more powerful

in films, however, he is foolish enough to try and fight a teenage girl that has abetter chance at defeating him.

    Key Frame 7

Jessie reaches the exit and as she pushes the door

open, there eye line shot of the door following a

close up of Jessies eyes, back to a cut in of herbloody hands touching the door. This is a semiotic

as she is finally breaking free from her troubles

and beginning a new chapter when leaving the

door, as an audience we are leaving with the

protagonist on her finished journey. There is a lot

of light on the other side of the door, to reflect that

Jessie should be hopeful for the future. This also

releases any tension built from the action because

she is the last one standing.

Key Frame 8Jessie walks out to comfort her friend Amber, who

is the focus in this medium shot, however Jessie

can still be seen in the back approaching. Her

positioning in the back tells us that she is not the

main subject at this point. Her positioning in the

back tells us that she is not the main subject at this

point. Ambershair is messy and her clothing dirtybecause she is sitting on muddy grass. As a

director I intended to have the audience aware

that she was also a victim to Lenz, by representing

Amber as fearful and refusing to be a part of the

action because of his abuse to her in the past.

Ambers clothing is also dark, linked to thecharacters in Attack the Block who all had dark

hooded jumpers and jackets, with dark trousers

and shoes. Amber is wearing Vans trainers to fit

the stereotype of a young teenager, to reveal she is

a type of character to follow trends, unlike Jessie who stands out.

    Key Frame 9

Jessie approaches Amber to comfort her, as seen in

this low angled medium shot, revealing both faces

and exposing their horrid appearances, reflecting

that both have won the battle. Jessie holds amberwith both arms, revealing her bloody hands and

representing her to be brave. Amber is less strong

than Jessie because she is in her embrace and she

is clearly crying as Jessie tells her in diegetic

dialogue, its over, he wont be hurting us

anymore, similar to a hero speaking aloud theirvictory. The flats behind the two characters remind

the audience that the characters are in an urban

setting, linked to Attack the Block, representing

them to be low in status and class. This also links to

the character representations, as we are aware that they are only young teens

but have been through a lot of dangerous trouble. The soft non diegetic music

playing in the background slowly fades out until there is only the sound of the

wind brushing the trees, following a continuous, slow zoom out of the girls as

they hug and begin to walk down the road, away from the flats. The shot moves

higher into an aerial shot, so can see the whole of their neighbourhood.
