The Engineering and PhysicalSciences Research Council(EPSRC) has ranked Newcastleamong its top12most stronglyfunded universities after itsecured £57.2 million in thelast three years.

The University, together with theNewcastle upon Tyne HospitalsNHS Foundation Trust, hasbeen awarded £21million fromthe National Institute for HealthResearch to boost our researchinto ageing.

Research Intensive

Ranked among the best inthe world by both the QSand Times Higher Educationuniversity league tables,Newcastle University is intheir global top 150, whilethe Sunday Times 2012University Guide placed usin12th position nationally.

The University’s researchrecord is strengthened by theopening of the Dental ClinicalResearch Facility, dedicatedto improving dental care andtreatment, and the ArthritisUK Tissue Engineering Centre,where research has thepotential to revolutionise thetreatment of early osteoarthritis.

Our Insights public lecturesseries is one of the largest andmost distinguished in the UK.

These lectures, and our Livelunchtime concerts, are freeand open to all, attracting overthirteen and a half thousandpeople onto campus each year.

Extending its overseasreputation, the Universitybecame the first in the UKto open a medical school inMalaysia and added furthercourses to its programmein Singapore.

Research ExcellenceNewcastle University is a member of the Russell Group, the associationof 20 leading research-intensive UK universities. We have one of thelargest European Union research portfolios in the UK and have researchlinks with many other countries. We have a proven track record of meetingthe most pressing societal challenges through socially relevant research.

‘World leading’ or ‘internationally recognised’ research was identifiedin all of our submitted subject areas by the Research AssessmentExercise (RAE) 2008, and we are ranked 17th in the UK for researchpower (according to the influential publication, Research Fortnight).

The next official UK-wide research assessment is due to be publishedin December 2014 and preparation is well under way.

As part of the University’s commitment to excellence with impact,we have identified institutional challenge themes that address keysocietal issues: ageing and health; sustainability; and, launching in2012, social renewal. We are addressing the challenges of ageingin order to make the very most of our increasingly long lives.

At the same time, pushing forward as a leader in sustainabilityresearch, the University has completed the first stage in anambitious project to develop a geothermal energy systemthat will heat Newcastle city centre.

We have significant strengths in research relating to how individuals,communities and organisations adapt and thrive in a rapidlychanging and challenging environment.These strengths willform the basis for our social renewal societal challenge theme.

The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council(EPSRC) has named Newcastle University as the UK providerof the National X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) service –a state-of-the-art x-ray facility that will help engineers discovernew sources of green power.

The University is investing in academic and social spaces tocreate a vibrant and welcoming campus including the refurbishedStudents’ Union, which features 24-hour access study areas.

The University has a generous package of bursaries, scholarshipsand fee discounts, including our Promise Scholarships offering upto £9,000 a year to up to 20 UK students.

The Newcastle-led Realising Opportunities schemewon theTimes HigherWidening Participation Initiative of the Year Awardfor its work in promoting fair access to higher education.

Education

More than 90 per cent of our graduates go on to employmentor further study; amongst our peers, we are ranked 5th in theUK for employability and 10th for overall student satisfaction.

Our award-winning Careers Service supports over 30 studentcompanies to launch each year and provides employment andvolunteering opportunities in local firms and organisations.
