W ith little money, the German’s of Cincinnati added steel cut or pin head oats to their sausage along with salt, pepper, bay leaves, rosemary and thyme creating the local favorite of Goetta. Growing popularity around the country, Glier’s Goetta has only been available to the Cincinnati area…UNTIL NOW. To accommodate our Brat, Mett and Goetta lovers around the country, Glier’s can now be shipped ANYWHERE throughout the USA and makes the perfect gift this holiday season.

Cincinnati, also known as the Queen City, is a city rich in his-
tory and culture with exceptional visual and creative arts, professional sports teams and top notch muse-ums. Whether you are a resident or a visitor there is always something to learn, see and do in Cincinnati and our neighboring cities of Covington and Newport. For those reasons and many more, it’s no surprise that in 2012 Lonely Planet Travel Guide named Cincinnati number three of the top ten travel destinations in the United States.
Cincinnati offers all the benefits of larger cities like Chicago and New York while maintaining the small hometown hospitality. In this section we like to bring interesting facts and opinions. This is what we have for you in this month’s issue:
Giving ThanksNovember is recognized as the month of giving thanks and at the top of the list is our military. The list of people to thank grows as we add Joyce Elkus, and the volunteers and partners for founding and donating their time and services to the Armed Forces Ticket Association, also known as AFTA.
The Queen City
“The city is indeed, justly styled the Queen of the West: distinguished for order, enterprise, public spirit, and liberality, she stands the wonder of an admiring world.”

Cincinnati AFTA was created so active members and veterans of the Armed Forces and their families would have free and deeply discounted tickets available for the Arts, Entertainment and Sporting events and attractions in the area. Since its inception in 2008, 57,800 tickets have been distributed at a fair market value of over $2,237,000. Visit www.afta-cincinnati.org for more information on obtaining tickets, upcoming events and how to become a Ticket Partner or Corporate Partner. All donations including financial donations are appreciated. So thank you to the volunteers at AFTA, both the Ticket and Corporate Partners and a great big THANK YOU to all the members of our Armed Forces.

Saengerfest and The Spirit of Christmasby Sue Cunningham
The holiday season is upon us and we can be thankful for the
return of Saengerfest with four-teen participating choirs per-forming at five historical venues. Sängerfest is German for “Singing Festival”. In 1838 the first German singing society in the United States was formed in Cincinnati and the first Sängerbund (singing group) performed at Sängerfest Hall which was also known as Cincin-nati Exposition Hall. The Venetian Gothic style structure was built by architects Hannaford, Samuel & Sons and in 1876 it was converted to a music hall.It is believed that this festival (some being competitions) started in Hambach, Bavaria around 1830. The festivals expanded all over Europe and there were many male-only choirs, some smaller having hundreds of participants and some larger having thou-sands of participants. Some were even know to be part of political demonstrations. The popularity of Saengerfest in Cincinnati grew and by 1870 it consisted of approximately two thousand singers and 60 choirs and gained national attention as it brought thousands to the Over-the-Rhine area. The introduction
of Maifest in 1873 infringed on the support and many participants broke away from the singing festi-val which eventually became the demise of Saengerfest with the last festival being held in 1952.In 2012 the World Choir Games came to Cincinnati making it the first U.S. city to host the “The Olym-pics of Choral Music” and brought thousands of spectators and thou-sands of vocalists making up 400 choirs to Cincinnati for two weeks. The success of this event also inspired American Legacy Tours to bring back Sängerfest and make it an annual event.Back for its second year, this event can be enjoyed by the entire family as you stroll through historic Over the Rhine, share the traditions and history of this rich culture and celebrate the Spirit of Christmas. Brad Hill of Ameri-can Legacy Tours shares, “There is nothing quite like Christmas Saengerfest, in addition to hearing amazing Christmas music, guests can take in the beauty of the his-toric churches in Over-the-Rhine.” These participating churches and businesses with both local and national significance deserve recognition due to their contribu-tions for rebuilding and assisting the community.

Memorial HallMemorial hall sits at 1225 Elm Street and was built in 1908. The building, designed by Samuel
Hannaford has been a meeting place for veterans and the citizens of Cincinnati. This site has hosted many political debates and heard many speeches by famous politi-cians including Teddy Roosevelt and William Jennings Bryant.
Christian Moerlein BreweryReturning to Cincinnati in 2012 the Chris-tian Moerlein Brewery now resides in the Husman Potato Chip factory at 1621 Moore Street as part of the craft beer movement. The Select Lager has the honor of being the first beer to certifiably pass the strict Reinheits-gebot (the Bavarian Purity Law of 1516.)
St. Francis Seraph This Roman Catholic Church at 14 East Liberty Street was established by the Fran-ciscan Friars in 1859. Providing assistance to many in need, St. Francis is an important part of the Over the Rhine Com-munity with several pro-grams including the Day Laborer Bag Lunch program and a soup kitchen for those in need.

The 1920’s introduced us to the Jazz Age, where musi-
cians played live and smoke filled the air. Those days are not gone the air has just cleared. The Blue Wisp has been the place to go to hear local and national jazz acts since 1973. But don’t just go for great jazz, go for award winning food. The Blue Wisp is a destina-tion for a great dining ex-perience with a full menu including starters, entreés and desserts. Chef Marciel Herring shares, “We wanted our menu to offer excep-tional cuisine at a reason-

able price and I think we have successfully achieved that goal.”Start with the Cranberry Goat Cheese Salad, mixed greens, dried cranberries, tomatoes and baked goat cheese croquettes served with balsamic vinaigrette or the Blackened Bleu Salad with tender beef medallions and Blue cheese crumbles. The Tomato Boursin Bisque soup is also a great way to start. The entrée might be a dif-ficult decision thanks to the culinary artistry of Chef Mar-ciel. Favorites include Beef

Tender Medallions with red wine demi-glacé and roasted creamy bleu cheese crumbles served with sides of cream cheese chive mashed pota-toes and grilled asparagus or the Stuffed Pork Chop, a double boned pork chop with wild rice, wild mushroom and parmesan stuffing served with roasted fingerling potatoes; and a brussel sprout, mush-room medley finished with a rum apple glaze. The Wild Mushroom Lasagna made with fresh mushrooms, sweet cream sherry and mozzarella cheese is a vegetarian delight.
Round off this excellent dining experience with Vanilla Bour-bon Bread Pudding. Warm homemade bread pudding with dried cherries topped with vanilla bourbon caramel sauce and finished off with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
While your taste buds are still tingling kick back and enjoy the great jazz that the Blue Wisp has been known for since 1973. “We are known as the place to go to hear the best Jazz from local and national acts but people don’t realize that we are an award win-ning restaurant,” says General Manager Ken Moore. For an all-inclusive night out make a night of it at the Blue Wisp, come for the food and stay for the Jazz.
