Art reflects life and one of life’s greatest obsessions is love. In The Garden, Forest Collective explores the development and eventual loss of love between the archetypal couple. Centred around one man, this modern day opera encompasses a wide variety of music by Schumann, Schubert, Mozart, Stephen Sondheim and Coldplay.

Off the back of a sell-out season of The Garden of Ice as a part of Melbourne Recital Centre’s Metropolis Music Festival, The Garden is Forest Collective’s follow up piece that promises to transport its audience on a beautiful, otherworldly journey to the depths of one’s heart.

Anton Delecca Quartet comes to the Kew Court House to perform powerful, emotionally driven jazz with influences spanning contemporary NYC improvised music, the spiritual jazz of Alice Coltrane, and the energy, passion and power of Middle Eastern music. Their sound is underscored by the band members’ love of songwriting and song form.

The Healer, the outfit’s third album released in November last year, was selected as one of PBS FM radio’s Top 10 albums of 2013 and will feature prominently in this very special performance.

Featuring a line-up of Melbourne’s crème de la crème of jazz, the quartet have performed at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival, recorded for ABC Radio National’s program, Jazztrack and recently played a sold out show as part of the 2013 Stonnington Jazz Festival.

After the success of her debut show, Waitressing...and Other Things I Do Well, Gillian Cosgriff is doing less waitressing, and a lot more of the other things. These may include: drinking, procrastinating, voicemail messages, love, sex, dreams, humiliation, grammar, hangovers, and Band-Aids. This is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things contains original songs that are touching, hilarious and will make you glad these things haven’t happened to you.

You buy a new phone; you get drunk and smash it. You treat yourself to expensive nail polish; it spills all through your handbag. You go on a date with a lovely attractive person, but then get drunk and booty call them at 2am. This is why we can’t have nice things.

Invenio’s latest work, in collaboration with video artist Robert Jarvis, uses voices as triggers for lighting events. Composed by Gian Slater, Luminesce explores a pattern-oriented musical landscape derived from a visual perspective. Within the parameters of symmetry, form and velocity, the compositions create a new system and performative environment for this vocal ensemble.

Emerging from darkness, sheets of colour and geometric shapes are projected onto each performer, activated and deactivated through every sound and every silence. Groupings within the ensemble emerge together as waves of light, mirroring the musical form, then returning to the solo or unison voice, the spotlight or the blanket of illumination.

Melbourne melodist Ainslie Wills has been accruing an earnest following amongst the Australian and International music scenes since the independent release of her debut LP ‘You go your way, I’ll go mine’ in 2013. Her brand of neo-folk-rock is edging its way closer to the fore, showing that Wills is an artist with integrity and longevity.

Ainslie is currently working on album number two with her right hand man, guitarist and co-songwriter, Lawrence Folvig. Folvig, a master at creating evocative sonic landscapes, draws on influences such as Boards Of Canada, Radiohead and Aphex Twin. This atop with Ainslie’s penchant for killer vocal harmonies with influences ranging from Mahalia Jackson, Jeff Buckley, Grizzly Bear, Q-Tip and beyond, makes the music a beguiling listening experience.

Ranked in the Top 5 Best Australian Live Performances of 2013 in the Music Writers Poll, Wills and her five piece do not disappoint in a live context, cutting through musical terrain with vigour and prowess.

The musicians of the Melbourne Art Song Collective (MASC) are drawn together by their shared love of song and have been bringing fine music to audiences since 2009. Their programs are diverse, often combining iconic and well-loved song cycles with brand new compositions in a way that respects the history of Art Song while showing it to be a vibrant and evolving genre. Designated ‘Local Heroes’ by the Melbourne Recital Centre, MASC is regularly recorded by ABC FM and has been broadcast nationally.

In this concert, MASC showcases Art Song as a member of the Chamber Music genre by presenting Voice in ensemble with Cello, Flute and Piano. The program includes Ravel’s powerful Madagascan Songs, songs by Massenet and Saint-Saens along with the haunting Cello solo from Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time.

Flautist Lina Andonovska has performed in concert halls around Europe, China, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. In 2012 she held the position of Co-Principal Flute with the Southbank Sinfonia (UK). As a passionate performer of new music, Lina has worked with composers including Louis Andriessen, David Lang, Michael Gordon and Brett Dean.

In addition to an active chamber music and solo career, Lina frequently plays with Australia’s major orchestras and appeared with the BBC Symphony Orchestra (UK) when living in London. She has performed concerti with the Southbank Sinfonia (UK), Orchestra Victoria and the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. In 2009, Lina held a fellowship with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra performing and recording under the baton of Vladimir Ashkenazy.

In 2013, Lina was a recipient of an Australia Council JUMP mentorship, received an Arts Victoria grant to initiate a new music concert series in Melbourne, holds a fellowship at the Australian National Academy of Music, was announced as a national finalist for a Music Council of Australia Freedman Fellowship and is a Melbourne Festival Cultural Ambassador.

The Arcadia Quintet was formed in 2013 by five like-minded young musicians from around the country, who shared a love of playing together and a passion for wind chamber music. Kiran Phatak, David Reichelt, Lloyd van’t Hoff, Matthew Kneale and Rachel Shaw are all current or former students of the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM), and have played together in various combinations for a number of years as members of the Australian Youth Orchestra and alumni of the Queensland Conservatorium of Music.

During that time they developed a belief that, as wind musicians instinctively breathe together and are capable of creating an enormous variety of sound worlds, the wind quintet is an outstanding chamber medium that can rival the very best string quartets. They are excited about sharing this with their audiences.

Intrepid sonic explorers Laila Engle and Ken Murray have been scouring the globe to find exquisite music for flute and guitar. Together they present an unforgettable afternoon of music influenced by Brazilian choro, Macedonian folksong, and the beauty of the Australian landscape. Many of the works featured have been written especially for the duo and include original compositions by Murray.

Murray has developed a singular career as a guitarist combining performance, composition, teaching and research. He has championed and recorded Spanish music from the early twentieth century, worked extensively with contemporary Australian composers and has been active as a performer of Brazilian and South American musical styles.

Flautist, Engle, has travelled extensively throughout Australia and abroad as a musician. She is a passionate advocate for contemporary Australian music and is a founding member of the critically acclaimed new music group Syzygy Ensemble.
