work, but I thank you for your confidence, support and encouragement.

I am excited to see developments unfold for the future, and particularly throughout this year as we mark ‘100 Years of the SGFA’.

As with any Society, its continued success will depend upon each one of us as Members on all levels to keep moving forward with pride in membership of an amazing Society.

As you read this Bulletin I will have already happily handed over the reins to my successor. Having ‘worn my badge with pride’ for the past five years, and as a Member for the past fifteen years, I shall naturally miss the dynamic meetings, the daily engagement with Council and Members in general.

However, I feel happy with what we have collectively achieved; it’s been quite a whirlwind of events, there have been many highlights and a lot of

Ronald Maddox, Artist, Illustrator, Designer and Hon SGFA passed away on November 14 2018, aged 88, following a short illness. A service to commemorate his life was held at Ayot St Peter Church, Welwyn, Hertfordshire, on Thursday 6th December 2018. The Society of Graphic Fine Art remembers our late Honorary Member with admiration for his work as an artist and for his charm and kindness to the Members of the SGFA.

Ronald was the guest speaker at one of our AGM meetings and he entertained us with an interesting and very funny speech.

I shared a table at the AGBI lunch meetings and he and his wife were wonderful and entertaining company. We will miss him.

The watercolour of some plates is by Frank Brangwyn. In 1922 Sir Frank Brangwyn RA RE, the renowned muralist, painter, architect, illustrator and designer, became the Society’s first President in a line of distinguished leaders that continues today.Normally we can’t reproduce his work but Libby Horner is the owner of the image so we are really lucky to have it.

Society of Art Galleries, Bankside, The Menier, the publication of our Centenary Book and above all the very fine execution of artworks by our Membership, 2019 will project us into our second century glowing with the mantle

of success and bring us to a fitting close of our first one hundred years. I wonder if all those who came together at the very formation of our society will move amongst us and give their blessings for the years ahead!!!! One never knows. Michael Walsh

Jennifer Jokhoo March: ‘Petworth explored by the SGFA’

A small group of Artists from the SGFA have created work for a collaborative exhibition focused on Petworth and the South Downs.

Charles Burnes After watching the documentary “Silhouette Secrets” – which Charles launched on Amazon, people often ask what sparked his interest in silhouettes. It isn’t such an easy question to answer. He thinks back over his years as a street artist, to writing a book on silhouettes, the first time Charles cut a silhouette of the Queen, the many corporate events he has attended, and finally to recent years producing and marketing Silhouette Secrets. However, over and above all that, his mind often returns to this silhouette, which has been in his family for years. It may well be the first silhouette Charles ever saw.

This family portrait was cut in 1907, by an unknown artist. It shows his Chilean great grand-mother, Clara Burns, with eight of her nine children. The eldest child, Charles (standing at the front) is his grandfather, while the third child is his great uncle David. Charles and David were both old enough to fight in the Great War. Charles was injured, and returned home, while his younger

brother David was killed in Flanders, aged 19, during the closing weeks of the war. Charles was named after both of them.

Alice White has been invited to become the newest Expert Lecturer for the London Art Salon. Her series of art history talks from a painters’ perspective starts with ‘Ways To Look At Painting’, at the Art Workers Guild in Bloomsbury on Wednesday Feb 13, followed by a live art tour at the National Gallery on Tuesday 26 of the same month.

Libby Horner published Brangwyn’s “Pots”, Catalogue of Ceramics and Glassware at the end of 2018. The book was researched, written and designed by Libby and details all the ceramics manufactured by Royal Doulton, Ashtead Potters, Wilkinson and Foley together with chargers and jugs which he probably threw himself. It also illustrates Brangwyn’s own designs for ceramics and glassware plus images from the Royal Doulton and Foley Pattern Books. 214 pages, 101 works (almost all illustrated). Ulrich West has a Retrospective Exhibition at Gallery 1, The World of Glass, St Helens. It opens on Saturday January 12, 1 - 3 pm and celebrates over 50 years of his art.

Neil Dixon is in the late stages of a software application for artists to manage artwork inventory and stock, and other aspects of managing a studio and creative practice. Trevor Waugh Normally this is a bad time of year for that sort of thing, but just following a recent visit to Dubai to relax in the sunshine prior to Christmas, Trevor was offered a studio by the ministry out there! Big surprise! You may or not know that he has been exhibiting there (Dubai) for many years now, and has sold many works of art, even had a book published about his travels in the Emirates (The Emirates, through the eyes of an Artist) selling over 40,000 copies and sponsored by HSBC.

Trevor is still a founding member of The New Orientalist painters, headed by The Majlis Gallery, Dubai, but... to be offered studio space…well… that’s “Arty“ for him, so Trevor is taking it initially for the month of February and then see how it goes from there. Trevor would like the members to know that… Anyone wishing to pay me a visit, from SGFA, while he is out there will be greeted with Eastern promise. (Or just an email ).

Gary Cook is taking part in the Kevis House Gallery SGFA show in Petworth March 2 - April 6. From 3 - 9 April he has 35 new works on show in his ‘Tree Life’ solo exhibition at Shaftesbury Arts Centre Gallery. Three of his watercolours have been short-listed for the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colour (RI) exhibition at Mall Gallery.

David Webster was asked to paint a pen and wash portrait - in my particular architectural style - of The Globe Theatre on London’s Southbank.

The Globe’s structure is basically circular. On plan, it is split into four equal ninety-degree sections. Each section is then split into five equal segments.

It was so important that my composition showed the curvature of the building. So the use of perspective and shadow would be critical. On plan, each of the five segments is the same width as the others in each ninety-degree section. But not when viewed vertically, as they reduce in width to follow the curvature of the building. Horizontal and vertical perspectives act differently on all the

individual timbers in each separate segment, both above and below the eye line. The thatched roof has its own quite different perspectives. If your artist’s eyes look hard at the timbers you find that they join differently. Some join vertically, some join horizontally and some are double as each segment joins its neighbour.

The colour of the building also looks simple enough – basically plaster washed walls and thatch. So simple colour was applied and then gently strengthened in places. Lastly, early morning shadow was chosen and added selectively. All this gave me the curvature and three dimensions I wanted to show.

The next time you are there, give The Globe a good hard look with your artist’s eyes. It looks simple enough and repetitive in design. But don’t be fooled!

Svetlana Cameron Interview in Pastel Journal

Following her success in the Pastel 100 and Strokes of Genius competitions in the USA Svetlana Cameron was invited to be a featured artist in the special 20th anniversary February issue of Pastel Journal Magazine. Karen Munck has a picture accepted for the RWS Contemporary Watercolour 2019 exhibition at Bankside Gallery, London. On from March 8 - March 26.

Karen will also be showing at The Linklater Gallery in Lewes with the Sussex Watercolour Society as part of the Lewes Artwave from August 16-26.

In October she will be having a retrospective at The Skyway Gallery in Shoreham.

Karen Neale is ‘masterminding’ another ‘Making a Magical Metropolis’ Family Day Activity at Stamford Arts Centre on Friday, February 22 2019. Basically anyone from 2 to 92 and beyond, creates their dream building with or without inspiration from my little handout sheets, which then gets added to the gallery wall and over the day a magical metropolis grows…… I’ve attached the result of last year’s creation (all done in one day), and my little hand out sheet. It was a fantastic event last year and inspired a lot of people - young and old - to get drawing……….so maybe some members for SGFA in the future!!!!!
