The Tom Musselman The Tom Musselman Golf CenterGolf Center

One of the fi nal pieces in the Cardinals’ rise to national promi-nence is in place for the University of Louisville men’s and women’s golf programs, as the Tom Musselman Golf Center offi cially opened on Tuesday, April 17, 2007 at the Cardinal Club. The facility is state-of-the-art and instrumental in mak-ing the Cardinals one of the top golf programs in the country.

The Tom Musselman Golf Center, which was built at a cost of $600,000, is an indoor practice facility that houses both the U of L men’s and women’s golf programs. The 5,500 square foot golf center has three indoor hitting bays, video equipment with swing analysis capability, men’s and women’s locker rooms, an indoor putting green, coaches’ offi ces and a players’ lounge. There’s also an 8,000-square foot outdoor putting green.

“We appreciate Tom Musselman and his family for what they have meant to the university and the community,” said Vice President of Athletics Tom Jurich. “The success of our golf programs is synonymous with the Musselman family. Both of our golf programs will benefi t greatly from this facility and we’re excited to see the positive impact the golf center will have on our programs.”

The Tom Musselman Practice Facility at the Cardinal Club has been selected as a 2012 Golf Range Association of America Top 50 Range in the Private Category.

2012-13 Outlook2012-13 OutlookIf the 2012 fall season is any indication of

things to come, the University of Louisville men’s golf team is in for a great season, and a return trip to the NCAA Regionals.

This past fall, the Cardinals won the Cardinal Intercollegiate and fi nished as runner-up three times in tournament action.

Coming off a second-straight second place showing at the BIG EAST Championship, the Cardinals are in search of their third BIG EAST Championship and fi rst since 2009.

Head coach Mark Crabtree had to replace veteran anchor Justin Dorward who ended his collegiate career by being selected to compete as an individual at the 2012 NCAA Regional in Bowling Green, Ky.

Crabtree went out and put together a class with four newcomers who have made an imme-diate impact on the program. Blended together with several returning regulars, the men’s golf team has the necessary depth to have a big spring.

Robin Sciot-Siegrist has made his presence felt on the course since the moment he arrived in Louisville. The freshman posted four top ten fi nishes in fi ve fall events. Before coming to Louisville, Sciot-Siegrist worked his way up the rankings to become one of the top 350 amateurs in the world as of August. He captured the 2011 French Under 18 Championship and placed in the top 10 at the 2012 Murat Cup.

Windgate University transfer Antoine LeSaux has also played a big role for the Cardinals. LeSaux was named to the 2011-12 DII Ping All-Region Team and is the fi rst amateur to ever win on the Carolina Pro Tour. This season, LeSaux has three top 10 fi nishes and placed second in his fi rst Louisville event.

Henry Tomlinson and Maximilian Walz an-chor the returners for Crabtree.

Tomlinson has shown vast improvement from a year ago and notched three top 10 fi nish-es in the fall. Tomlinson averaged 75.1 strokes per round last season while competing in nine events.

Walz ended last season on a strong note by fi nishing fi fth at the Wolfpack Spring open before tying for 10th at the BIG EAST Championship. The sophomore from Germany competed at the Omega European Masters in the fall before re-turning to Louisville. Walz returned to fi nish in the top 20 in all four events for the Cardinals in the fall. He placed third at The McLaughlin and averaged 73.0 strokes per round for the 2012 fall slate.

Crabtree also returns seniors Daniel Iceman and Chris Malec in addition to junior Charlie

Newcomers Antoine LeSaux and Robin Sciot-Siegrist have provided Mark Crabtree’s squad with a spark to compete at a high level.Macneal.

Iceman competed in seven events last sea-son and had three top 30 fi nishes. He tied for seventh in the fall at the Cardinal Intercollegiate, which was his best Louisville fi nish.

Malec took home medalist honors last year at the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational and led the Cardinals to their fi rst team title since the 2009 BIG EAST Championship. Along with Dorward, Malec helped anchor the team last year which posted three top 10 fi nishes down the stretch.

Macneal averaged 75.3 strokes per round during the 2011-12 season over four tourna-ments. His best fi nish was a tie for 25th at the Cardinal Intercollegiate.

Rounding out Crabtree’s 2012-13 team are newcomers Gus Lundquist and Trevor Sluman.

Lundquist was the winner of the US Open Lo-cal qualifying in Colorado with a round of 69. He

was the fi rst alternate for the 2012 US Amateur Championship. Lundquist earned starts in three fall events and placed in the top 30 twice.

Sluman, who transferred from Towson, quali-fi ed for the 2012 Porter Cup and won the 2012 Rochester District Golf Association Match Play event. The nephew of 1988 PGA Championship winner Jeff Sluman, Sluman appeared in two events in the fall and tied for 12th at the WKU/Kenny Perry Invitational.

If a consistently high level of achievement over a long period of time is the measure of a successful program, then Louisville’s Mark Crab-tree would meet those high standards.

Beginning his 14th season as the head coach of the University of Louisville men’s golf program, Crabtree has guided the Cardinals to two BIG EAST titles, fi ve regional appearances and two trips to the NCAA Championships.

When University of Louisville Vice President for Athletics/Athletics Director Tom Jurich hired Crabtree he knew he had someone who would eventually take the Cardinals’ men’s golf pro-gram to the next level, and that’s exactly what Crabtree has done.

Crabtree has the Cardinals on the national scene and the Hall of Fame coach is not satisfi ed with what his program has accomplished to date.

Last season, Crabtree guided the Cardinals to their fi rst tournament win since the 2009 BIG EAST Championship when Louisville captured the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational. In addition, Justin Dorward was selected to play as an indi-vidual in the NCAA Regional in Bowling Green, Ky. The Cardinals were runner-up at the BIG EAST Championship and fi nished in the top fi ve at three additional tournaments.

The 2010-11 Cardinals posted the fi fth-low-est team stroke average in school history and Karsten Clements ended his collegiate career with a runner-up fi nish at the BIG EAST Cham-pionship. Clements and Justin Dorward were named to the 2011 All-BIG EAST Men’s Golf Team.

Riley Wheeldon capped off the 2009-10 season by being tabbed as the BIG EAST Men’s Golfer of the Year while Chris Biuso also was selected to the All-BIG EAST Men’s Golf Team.

The Cardinals won their second BIG EAST title in 2009 and advanced to the NCAA Region-als for the fi fth straight year. For his effort, Crab-tree was named the BIG EAST Coach of the Year for the second time.

Crabtree saw then-senior Adam Hadwin take home medalist honors at the BIG EAST Championship and set the school record for single-season stroke average at 71.79. Crabtree also guided freshman Riley Wheeldon who was named the BIG EAST Newcomer of the Year.

Hadwin continues his career on the Web.com Tour and narrowly missed earning a PGA Tour Card for the 2013 season. Needing to fi nish in the top 25 at the PGA Tour Qualifying Tourna-ment, Hadwin tied for 32nd after fi ring a 15-un-der par 417 at the 108-hole tournament.

Last year, Hadwin was named the Male Professional of the Year by the Golf Journal-

ists Association of Canada. Hadwin was a full-time member of the Canadian Tour in 2011 and thrilled Canadians from coast to coast. Hadwin tied for 31st at the U.S. Open at Congressio-nal before tying for fourth at the RBC Canadian Open in Vancouver. He closed 2011 as the high-est ranked Canadian golfer on the Offi cial World Golf Rankings at 214.

In 2007-08, the Cardinals posted their best fi nish in school history — a tenth-place fi nish at the NCAA Championships at Purdue University. Playing one of the toughest courses in the coun-try, the Cardinals were in contention for most of the tournament and had their highest fi nish at the event when Adam Rainaud tied for 13th overall.

The Cardinals also won a pair of tourna-ments and fi nished second at the BIG EAST Championship. Derek Fathauer closed out his outstanding career with two tournament wins and also fi nished 69th at the United States Open. He became the fi rst U of L player to make the cut at the US Open.

That season also saw Hadwin become an All-American Academic Scholar and Fathauer and Rainaud earned All-American accolades.

Crabtree has orchestrated a remarkable string of successful seasons for the Cardinals. Crabtree has guided his program to four straight regional appearances, two straight visits to the NCAA Championships and a BIG EAST title.

In just over 13 seasons at U of L, Crabtree’s Cards have posted a top fi ve team, a top seven individual, the top 10 career stroke averages in school history and placed numerous players in the U.S. Amateur tournament.

The Cardinals won a school record seven

tournaments, which included their fi rst BIG EAST Championship and advanced to the NCAA Championships, where they fi nished 27th overall in 2006-07.

Hosting the BIG EAST Championship for the fi rst time, the Cardinals dominated play, as the Cardinals had four players fi nish in the top fi ve.

In its fi rst season in the BIG EAST in 2005-06, the Cardinals tied for the league title, but fell in a tight playoff to Notre Dame. It was Crabtree’s highest fi nish in a league championship since taking over at the University of Louisville.

Despite the loss, the Cardinals advanced to the NCAA Regionals for the second straight sea-son. Louisville fi nished 22nd in the NCAA West Regional in Tucson, Ariz.

The 2005-06 season was one of the best in school history, as the Cardinals won a pair of tournaments and fi nished in the top three in seven other tournaments.

Under Crabtree’s direction in 2004-05, the Cardinals fi nished 15th in the NCAA Regional, just missing advancing to the NCAA Champion-ships. Louisville also recorded 13 top 10 fi nish-es, 12 top 20 fi nishes and won a school record

While Jurich had complete confi dence in Crabtree’s ability to build a strong program on his own, he went a step further, as he has done with virtually every sport across the board, and ensured that his new coach would have facilities that could rival any program across the country. The Cardinal Club, the luxurious state-of-the-art home course of the Cardinals, opened in the fall of 2001 and with it began a new chapter for both the men’s and women’s golf programs. The Tom Musselman Golf Center opened in 2007 and has all the amenties for the men’s and women’s golf programs.

Success follows winners and it certainly fol-lowed Crabtree to U of L as his Cardinals have gained momentum with each passing season.

Under Crabtree’s direction, the Cardinals have raised the bar each campaign, rewriting the U of L record book at a frenzied pace.

In 2003, Crabtree saw the Cardinals pro-duce their fi rst ever NCAA individual participant, as Brett Jones made the fi eld.

During the 2001-02 campaign, Crabtree’s young but talented squad notched a 291.5 col-lective stroke average, nearly six strokes better than the school record of 297.49 posted by the 1999-00 squad in Crabtree’s fi rst season in Lou-isville.

With one of the nation’s top freshmen class-es and senior Grant Sturgeon in the lineup, the Cards swung their way to one of the top seasons ever at U of L. Sturgeon broke the individual season stroke record established the previous year by Chris Campbell, who twice earned All-

Conference USA accolades under Crabtree, while also setting a new standard for career stroke average.

Following his playing days at U of L, Stur-geon took his game to the pro ranks and prompt-ly claimed victories in each of his fi rst two pro events, including the 2002 Kentucky Open. Sturgeon spent the ‘03 season playing on the Hooters Tour.

Prior to his arrival in the Derby City, Crabtree spent nine seasons as the head coach at Colo-rado State University. There, he saw the Ram program go from a non-scholarship program into a top 25 team and NCAA Championship con-tender.

CSU qualifi ed for four consecutive NCAA West Regionals under his guidance and quali-fi ed for its fi rst NCAA Championship appearance in 1999. The Rams fi nished tied for 24th at the ’99 championships held in Chaska, Minn.

Traditionally known as a cold-weather school, Colorado State entered the MasterCard Collegiate Golf Top 25 for the fi rst time in 1998, fi nishing at No. 23. The Rams also sent their fi rst individual, Nigel Spence, to the NCAA Finals. As a result, Crabtree earned NCAA District VII Coach of the Year honors in ’98.

Along the way, Crabtree put together one of the nation’s most competitive schedules, taking his program to elite tournaments in Honolulu, San Diego, Phoenix and San Francisco.

Ram golfers responded to the challenge, posting 11 top 10 team fi nishes in 15 competi-tions in 1998-99, including a second consecutive team title at the prestigious Stanford Invitational.

The Rams knocked off then-No. 1 Georgia Tech on their way to the ‘97 title, marking the fi rst time in school history a team had defeated the na-tion’s top-ranked team in any sport.

CSU’s road to the top 25 and the NCAA Championships was not an easy one.

His fi rst class of Rams were homegrown and talented, leading CSU to four team champion-ships, 27 top-fi ve showings and two-runnerup fi nishes at the WAC Championship.

Crabtree, who played collegiately at the Uni-versity of Colorado, was a four-time state cham-pion and captured six Colorado Golf Association amateur titles. He also has been a qualifi er for both the United States Golf Association Public Links and National Amateur Championships. He was selected to the Colroado Golf Hall of Fame in 2006.

Crabtree is married to the former Janie Huff-man. They are the parents of Joshua (14) and Lauren (12).

Andrew Tredway begins his third season as an assistant coach with the University of Louisville men's golf pro-gram. Tredway has spent the previous three seasons as the head coach at Mercer University, guiding the Bears to unprecedented success. Under his direction, the Bears climbed to its fi rst top 100 ranking in one year and Tredway landed three straight top 25 recruiting classes from 2008-11. He helped lead the Bears to its fi rst at-large bid (individual bid) to the NCAA postseason in school history (2008-09), and also guided his squad to a third-place fi nish in the league, its best-conference standing in 16 years. During his tenure, he coached fi ve Academic All-Americans and was one of only fi ve conference sports to have every member of the team on the All-Academic squad. "I'm pleased to have Andrew join our program," said Mark Crabtree. "He had the ability to grow a couple programs that he inherited and he really understands how to develop players. His strengths are working with players and he understands all facets of running a program. He is a good teacher and has a tremendous passion for college golf." Before coming to Mercer, Tredway spent three seasons as the head coach at Texas Pan-American, where he guided his teams to two tournament titles and sparked the program to its highest ranking in the program's history. Tredway worked with the No.1 golf instructor in the world, Hank Haney from 2003-05. Tredway was an instructor at 15 full-week junior camps and provided instruction to almost 1,500 junior golfers ranging from 5-17.

Tredway spent one season as an assistant at the University of Alabama during the 2002-03 campaign. As a player, Tredway won fi ve times and holds fi ve course records on United States mini-tours while playing on the Australasian PGA Tour. Tredway, a 2000 graduate of the University of Oregon, was an outstanding golfer for the Ducks, guiding Oregon to an 18th-place fi nish at the NCAA Championships in 1999 and 28th in 1998. He earned Pac-10 All-Conference honors in 1999.

Volunteer Assistant Coach Ted SchulzVolunteer Assistant Coach Ted Schulz An 18-year veteran of the PGA, Nike and Asian Tours and a member of the University of Louisville Athletic Hall of Fame, Ted Schulz enters his third season working with the University of Louisville golf teams. A Louisville native, Schulz joined the PGA Tour in 1984, three years after putting the fi nishing touches on a stellar four-year career at U of L. Over the next 18 years, Schulz played in 263 tournaments, including four Masters, three U.S. Opens, four PGA Championships and two Tour Champion-ships. On the PGA Tour, Schulz claimed three tournament wins (`91 Los Angeles Open, `89 Southern Open and `89 Chrysler Open) and fi nished as high as sixth place in the 1992 Masters. He fi nished the 1989 season ranked 30th on the money list and his victory in the Los Angeles Open vaulted him to a career-best 29th-place on the list in 1991. With 15 career top 10 fi nishes under his belt, Schulz ranks 414th on the all-time money list with earnings in excess of $1.6 million. Schulz, the director of golf instruction at The Cardinal Club, still resides in the Louisville area with his wife, Diane and three children.

The Cardinal Intercollegiate began during the 1999-00 season with the Cardinals hosting an 18-team fi eld. Louisville fi nished fi fth overall. Notre Dame captured the team title with a two-stroke win over Western Kentucky.

In 2002, paced by co-medalist Ryan Gildersleeve, South Alabama extended its two-stroke lead after two rounds with a fi nal-round 287 to claim a four-stroke victory over Coastal Carolina with a three-round, 9-under par 855. Gildersleeve 68-68-71=207, the clubhouse leader entering the day, earned co-medalist honors with Virginia Commonwealth’s Ted Brown 68-69-70=207 after the two played to a stalemate for seven playoff holes.

The 2003 Cardinal Intercollegiate came right down to the wire. Eastern Kentucky claimed the victory by a one-stroke margin over the 2002 champion South Alabama. The Colonels fi red a 285 in the fi nal round which bested the Jaguars’ 286. Eastern Kentucky fnished at 7-over par 302-284-285=871. Louisville took third place at 12-over par 291-291-294=876.

The Cardinals won their home tournament for the fi rst time in 2004. Charlie Woo captured medalist honors to give U of L their fi rst tournament win since the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational during the 2001-02 season. Louisville carded 282-280-289=851 to defeat runner-up Marquette by 20 strokes. Woo mastered the course and fi nished an astonishing 10-under par after rounds of 69-66-71=206.

Marquette avenged their second place showing in 2004 to defeat the Cardinals at the 2005 Cardinal Intercollegiate. The Golden Eagles edged the Cardinals by a single stroke on the third hole of a playoff to capture the team title. Austin Peay’s Chris Barron fi red a fi nal round 67 to fi nish the tournament at 11-under par to capture medalist honors over Illinois State’s Matt Miller.

After a three-year hiatus, the Cardinal Intercollegiate resumed in 2008 with Louisville taking home the tournament title. It marked the Cards’ fi rst win at the Cardinal Intercollegiate since 2004. In addition, the men’s golf team set a school record, which still stands, for the lowest tournament score with an 834. It bested the 836 Louisville carded as a team at the Pioneer Classic in 2005-06. For the tournament, Louisville shot 281-280-273=834.

Miami of Ohio captured the tournament title in 2010 with its two-day total of 857. The Cardinals fi nished in a tie for fourth in the 16-team fi eld.

History of the Cardinal Intercollegiate

However, Justin Dorward, Sebastian Szirmak and Riley Wheeldon all fi nished in the top 10 for Louisville.

UALR fought through the cold and wet conditions in the rain-shorted Cardinal Intercollegiate in 2011. The Trojans carded a 3-under par 573 to win by eight strokes over Northern Illinois. U of L tied for fourth for the second straight year at 292-291=583.

In 2012, Louisville waited out a fi ve-hour weather delay to win the Cardinal Intercollegiate for the fi rst time since 2008. The Cardinals fi nished with a 6-under par 858. Louisville trailed Bowling Green by two strokes heading into the fi nal round before cruising to a nine-stroke victory over the Falcons.

The Louisville area owes its existence to the Falls of the Ohio, the only place where the 981-mile Ohio River fl ows over bedrock. The falls were really a rapids where the river dropped about 27 feet in three miles, usually blocking passage by boat.

Early explorers recognized the strategic impor-tance of the Falls. George Rogers Clark established the fi rst settlement there in 1778, to use as a base of his invasion of British territory in Southern Illinois and Indiana. Two years later that settlement became Louisville -- named for King Louis XVI of France, who was supporting the American Revolution.

Louisville quickly became a vital transportation center for the young nation. Ports were establish above and below the Falls. Passengers and freight moved overland around the rapids. Trails and roads connected the ports to inland settlements in Ken-tucky and Indiana. The steamboat brought prosper-ity and growth to the area; by 1850, Louisville was the 10th-largest city in the nation.

In the decades that followed, railroads greatly im-proved connections with cities throughout the nation, and Louisville became known as the “Gateway to the South.” Businesses and industries were attracted by the strong and convenient transportation network and Louisville became an industrial center.

In recent years, the economy of the Louisville area has shifted from a heavy reliance on industry to an increasing emphasis on services, including earn-ing a worldwide reputation as a transportation and distribution center. Once again, location is a key fac-tor. Louisville is located near the center of the east-ern half of the contiguous 48 states, with nearly half of the nation’s consumer markets within a 500-mile radius. The climate is mild enough that Louisville’s airport is rarely closed because of weather.

Climate, location and a good transportation sys-tem helped convince United Parcel Service to estab-lish its national hub in Louisville in the early 1980s. UPS, in turn, is attracting businesses that depend on fast and effi cient transportation of their goods to other parts of the nation and throughout the world.

The Kentucky Center for the Arts is one of the nation’s premier performing arts facilities, housing three spacious theatres.

Sports, including U of L ath-

letics, are an important facet of life in the Louisville area. Churchill Downs has hosted numerous Breed-ers’ Cups and continues its traditional Run For The Roses -- the Kentucky Derby -- the fi rst Saturday each May. The 1996 and 2000 PGA Championships were staged at Valhalla Golf Course in eastern Jef-ferson County, which was also the site of the 2008 Ryder Cup international competition. The Louisville Bats, the triple-A baseball team of the Cincinnati Reds, have drawn over 1 million fans to games in a single season with new Slugger Field stationed on the downtown riverfront. Over 140 public parks, 20 public golf courses and 226 public tennis courts also provide outdoor entertainment.

Yet even though Louisville has changed through the years, it still has the fl avor and gentleness of a Southern town. The Belle of Louisville steamboat still paddles its way up and down the Ohio River daily, mint juleps are still served under an old oak tree dur-ing the hot and muggy summers and fi shing in the many lakes and rivers of Louisville and surrounding counties is still a favorite pastime.

Another favorite in Louisville is trying to fi gure out the correct pronunciation of the city. So if you’re a tourist, don’t say Louie-ville or Lewis-ville. Natives claim it’s Lou-a-vuhl. Either way, Louisville is still the same happy place.

Louisville Quick Facts Metropolitan area size: 2,179 square miles (includes eight neighboring counties). Population: approximately 1 million, the nation’s 16th-largest urban area in population. Median Age: 32.5 Weather: average annual rainfall is 44 inch-es; average summer/fall temperature is 84 de-grees; winter/spring temp. is 64. Louisville ranks among the top 25 conven-tion cities in the United States. More than 3.5 million visitors visit annually, including over 700,000 convention delgates. Louisville is home to legendary Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby, known as “the greatest two minutes in sports.” The Jefferson County Public School Sys-tem is the nation’s 25th largest public school system, with 96,000 students. Louisville’s top local manufacturers: Ford Motor Company, General Electric Company, Publishers Printing Company, Brown-Forman Corp. Kentucky Harvest, which collects surplus food to feed the homeless and needy, started in Louisville and spawned the national USA Harvest. The area’s largest private employer is UPS, the worldwide shipping business which uses Louisville International Airport as a hub. Louisville’s airport ranks fourth in the U.S. -- and sixth in the world -- in tons of air freight handled. Hillerich & Bradsby’s Louisville Slugger baseball bats are a hit at ballparks.

The University of Louisville attracts many of the nation’s best and brightest young minds to its friendly, park-like campus in the heart of Ken-tucky’s largest city.

In the past three years, 36 UofL students won prestigious Fulbright awards, more than all other Kentucky universities combined and more than prestigious universities such as Dartmouth and MIT. This success is based in part on the fact that UofL faculty not only are among the best in their fi elds, but that they take perosnal interest in students and push them to do their best.

Students at UofL are presented a wide range of study options — more than 170 fi elds in 11 schools and colleges — with many nationally ranked programs among them. UofL’s location in an area of more than a million people is also an asset, giving students many opportunities to apply the critical thinking skills they hone in the classroom to relevant, hands-on experiences in the community.

UofL students benefi t from superb facilities, including a library system ranked among the top 100 research libraries in North America and one of the nation’s top 10 academic clean rooms, where work in bioengineering, nanotechnology and other high-demand fi elds occurs.

UofL is committed to building a nurturing and challenging intellectual climate, a respect for di-versity and a genuine understanding of how di-versity enriches a vibrant metropolitan research

university. One of the university’s goals is to give every arts and sciences student the chance to study abroad at least once during his or her undergradu-ate career.

The university is also one of the fastest-growing research institutions in the nation, yielding many milestone discoveries. UofL faculty conducted the world’s fi rst successful implantation of a fully im-plantable artifi cial heart, developed the world’s fi rst 100-percent effective cervical cancer vaccine, con-ducted the world’s fi rst FDA-approved clinical trial using adult cardiac stem cells to treat heart disease and completed the nation’s fi rst successful hand transplant. In 2009, UofL and the Commonwealth of Kentucky announced the establishment of the

Conn Center for Renewable Energy Research and Environmental Stewardship. And UofL’s School of Public Health and Information Sciences received

$2.3 million to lead research in preparation for, pre-vention of and communication during pandemics.

UofL also stands out in community service. The university’s curricular engagement, outreach and partnerships recently earned it a Carnegie Com-munity Engagement ranking, a designation held by fewer than 200 institutions nationwide. In one year alone, UofL students,

faculty and staff contributed more than $25.1 million to charitable organizations through volun-teerism and direct donations.

Among the university’s many outreach pro-grams is the Signature Partnership, working with community organizations and businesses to im-prove the social, cultural, educational, health care and economic development services in a histori-cally underserved area of Louisville.

UofL was environmentally minded long be-fore “green” became a buzzword, cofounding the Partnership for a Green City several years ago with the city of Louisville and the local public school system to reduce waste, increase energy effi ciency and improve the health and education of area children.

UofL is a major player in the downtown arts scene, too, helping bring fi ne arts programming to Louisville to create a more vibrant city center. The Cressman Center for the Visual Arts is just one result of this effort. It features a glass hot shop, coldworking, metal and woodworking studios and three galleries open daily to the public.

But the greatest way in which UofL is mak-

ing its mark is through the contributions its students make to so-ciety. They graduate to become valu-able citizens such as cur-rent Repub-lican Leader and U.S. Sen. Mitch McCon-nell; U.S. Sen. and recent p res iden t ia l c a n d i d a t e Chr i s tophe r Dodd; Sirius/XM Radio per-sonality Bob Edwards; best-selling author Sue Grafton; and Sha-ron Darling, founder and president of the National Center for Family Literacy.

They truly help demonstrate that UofL’s slogan, “It’s Happening Here,” isn’t just a mar-keting tagline. It’s a way of life.

Growth, innovation, achievement and excel-lence have been the trade-marks of Tom Jurich’s ten-ure as the Vice-President for Athletics at the Univer-sity of Louisville for the last 15 years.

Since coming to the Der-by City in 1997, Jurich’s de-sire and vision has led the

Cardinals to unprecedented development and accomplishment. His efforts re-ceived national acclaim when he was selected as the 2007 Street & Smith’s Sports Business Journal/Sports Business Daily Athletic Director of the Year.

From facilities to gender equity, from community involvement to national leadership, Jurich’s actions prompted one state media outlet to recently write that “it all shows yet again that the hiring of Tom Jurich, the architect of this Louisville emergence, as UofL AD in the fall of 1997 stands as one of the most signifi cant events in our state’s modern sports history.” After just eight years working his constructive efforts, he was in-ducted into the state’s Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame in 2006.

Jurich has guided a whirlwind of accomplishments that have caught the eye of those who follow colle-giate athletics across the nation. Special things con-tinue to happen in Louisville, with a vibrant personality leading the way.

UofL took a dramatic step toward maintaining that upward trend by signing Jurich to an unprecedented contract extension in December of 2006 and subse-quent enhancements that will keep him with the Cardi-nals through 2023. In an unprecedented appointment, he was named Vice President for Athletics at UofL in 2003.

“Tom is an energetic leader,” said UofL President Dr. James Ramsey. “He has the advantage of being able to see the world of collegiate athletics from the viewpoint of a coach, an administrator, an athlete and a parent because he has worn all of those hats in his career. He has the vision to create a model program, assemble an ambitious group of talented coaches and staff, build world-class facilities and create education-al as well as championship opportunities for hundreds of student-athletes. He is committed to creating a for-ward moving, competitive and compliant culture that refl ects well on our university.”

Since Jurich was named Director of Athletics for the Cardinals on Oct. 21, 1997, there has been an unmatched fl urry of activity on the UofL campus and Louisville area since his arrival.

“The pride and passion this community has in our athletics program inspire me to do my absolute best every day,” said Jurich. “This department and I have grown together signifi cantly at a rapid pace. We have many building blocks in place but have so much to ac-complish. I feel very privileged to be in this position.”

Jurich continues to push UofL to the forefront of college athletics and keep the Cardinals on the cutting edge nationally, turning heads while guiding major

changes in Cardinal Athletics including:● Engineering UofL’s historic move to the BIG

EAST Conference. Since joining the league in 2005, the Cardinals have won 50 league championships, the second highest of any school during that time.

● Attracting men’s basketball coach Rick Pitino to UofL 11 years ago, a move many deemed impossible. Pitino’s arrival energized the Cards’ tradition-rich pro-gram and quickly restored it to a position among the nation’s top teams. UofL began play in a new down-town arena, the KFC Yum! Center, in 2010.

● Rapidly building the football program. The Car-dinals have been ranked in the top seven twice in the last eight seasons, including the school’s fi rst BCS bowl berth in 2006. An expansion of Papa John’s Car-dinal Stadium was completed in 2010.

● Addressing multiple facility needs, including an extensive sports park to serve as a front lawn for the University. Owsley B. Frazier Cardinal Park features Ulmer Stadium (softball), Trager Stadium (fi eld hockey artifi cial surface fi eld),a soccer fi eld surrounded by a state-of-the-art track, fi tness trail and a playground. Jurich’s high energy, community and family-minded approach has been contagious, infecting the univer-sity, city and UofL fans everywhere with a positive out-look for the future of Cardinal Athletics. It is a formula that has provided a trail of success in each situation

Jurich has touched.Jurich has been active in the scope of college ath-

letics on a national level, within conference issues, and in his local community. He served three years as a member of the NCAA Management Council, one of the top legislative bodies of the NCAA, and the NCAA Division I Baseball Committee. He sits on the Board of Directors for Republic Bank and American Heart Association.

Jurich recently received the Louisvillian of the Year Award by the Louisville Advertising Federation and the Dan Mangeot Memorial Award, for contributions to the advancement of tourism and hospitality. He shared UofL’s prestigious Hickman-Camp Award, presented for exemplary contributions to the athletic department, with his wife Terrilynn in 2007. He was named the 2007 Louisville Magazine Person of the Year.

Guiding Colorado State University as its athletics director for the four years prior to his arrival at UofL, Jurich oversaw not only one of the most successful time periods in the school’s history in terms of on-fi eld competitiveness, but he was the driving force behind a successful capital campaign drive that included facility renovation.

Prior to his constructive efforts at Colorado State, Jurich operated as director of athletics for eight years at his alma mater, Northern Arizona University. When appointed at NAU, he was the youngest director of athletics at the NCAA Division I level at the age of 29. He was honored as the NAU Alumnus of the Year in 2011.

He became athletic director at Northern Arizona in 1988, after previously serving as co-director (1986-88) and assistant director (`84-86). He was inducted to the NAU Sports Hall of Fame in 1989 and received its 2011 Alumnus of the Year award.

Jurich is among the fi nest football players in North-ern Arizona history. A punter, placekicker and backup quarterback for the Lumberjacks, Jurich earned fi rst-team Kodak All-America honors in 1977 -- the fi rst collegiate kicker to make the Kodak honor list -- and also received All-America acclaim from The Sporting News. He is the only kicker in Big Sky Conference his-tory to be named the league’s offensive player of the year (1977).

A 10th-round NFL draft pick of the Pittsburgh Steel-ers, Jurich later played with the Minnesota Vikings before a brief coaching stint at the University of Min-nesota.

The University of Louisville has undergone a dramatic transforma-tion under the leadership of its 17th president, Dr. James Ramsey. Ramsey has worked aggressively to move the university toward its goal of becoming a “pre-mier, nationally recognized, metropolitan research insti-

tution,” as mandated by Ken-tucky’s Postsecondary Education Reform Act. Since he became president in 2002, UofL has made great strides in fi ve strategic areas:

• Educational quality • Extramural research • Campus diversity • Community partnerships • Accountability Since 2002, the quality of UofL’s freshman class has improved each year, with the average ACT score of incoming freshmen climbing to 24.7 in 2011 from 23.2 in 2002. The university’s graduation rate has increased nearly 60 percent and the number of doc-toral degrees awarded has more than doubled since 2002. University of Louisville students are claiming a much larger share of the nation’s most prestigious ac-ademic honors. In 2009, UofL graduate Monica Marks from Rush, Ky., became the school’s fourth Rhodes Scholar and its fi rst female to win the prestigious award. In both 2010 and 2011, fourteen UofL students secured coveted Fulbright scholarships, placing UofL among the nation’s top 20 Fulbright producing institu-tions each year. Since 2003, 68 UofL students have received Fulbright awards, more than all other Ken-tucky schools combined. Those outstanding students study overseas and many return to the state to live and work. Ramsey also has created a university culture focused on research and innovation that seeks to improve the quality of life for people in Kentucky and beyond. The approach already has led to major mile-stones in healthcare, business and the environment. In 2012, UofL’s research funding is more than double what it was a decade ago and the university has be-come one of America’s fastest growing research uni-versities in National Institutes of Health funding. Ramsey also has set the tone for encouraging diversity on campus. UofL has reached or made sub-stantial progress on all eight of its goals set in the Ken-tucky Plan for Equal Opportunities and the Belknap Campus has changed from a “commuter school” to a residential campus. More than 5,000 UofL students live on campus or in university-affi liated housing com-pared with 2,300 when Ramsey became president. The university’s ties with its community have never been stronger. Not only has UofL been a major player in the award-winning Partnership for a Green City with Jefferson County Public Schools and Lou-

isville Metro government, it has launched a Signature Partnership Initiative to improve education, health care, social services and economic opportunity in west Louisville, an area of the city that’s been left behind. UofL has earned the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching’s highest rating in the area of community engagement. UofL is one of only 119 schools nationwide and three schools in Kentucky to earn the designation in two areas, curricular en-gagement and outreach and partnerships. The school is also reaching out to men and women in the armed services, signing education, training and research agreements with Fort Knox and the Kentucky National Guard. Under Ramsey’s direction, UofL is enjoying record-breaking fundraising efforts, raising more than $140 million per year to help offset a continuing series of state budget cuts. The campus is currently in the midst of an aggressive one billion dollar fundraising campaign called “Charting Our Course: A Campaign for Kentucky’s Premier Metropolitan Research Univer-sity.” A strong commitment to serving the community and state is nothing new for Ramsey. Before assum-ing UofL’s top post, he served as senior policy adviser and state budget director for Kentucky and senior pro-fessor of economics and public policy at UofL. He has served as vice chancellor for fi nance and administra-tion at both the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Western Kentucky University. He has been associate dean, assistant dean and director of public administration in the College of Business Administra-tion at Loyola University and research associate for the University of Kentucky’s Center for Public Affairs. He has served on the faculties of UNC – Cha-pel Hill, WKU, UK, Loyola and Middle Tennessee State University. Dr. Ramsey is a tenured professor of

economics. A frequent national speaker and writer on economic issues in the public sector, Ramsey has re-ceived a number of honors and awards including the Boy Scouts of America Silver Beaver Award in 2012, Greater Louisville Inc.’s Silver Fleur-De-Lis Award in 2011, Louisville Advertising Federation’s Louisvil-lian of the Year Award in 2010, Western Kentucky University Distinguish Alumni Hall of Fame in 2010, Louisville Defender Outstanding Community Service Award in 2010, Business First Business Leader of the Year in 2007, University of Kentucky College of Busi-ness and Economics Alumni Hall of Fame in 2004, the Governor’s Association’s Outstanding Public Service Award in 2001, Kentucky’s Distinguished Economist of the Year in 1999 and the Fern Creek High School Hall of Fame in 1998. A Kentucky native, he holds a bachelor’s de-gree in business administration from Western Ken-tucky University and master’s and doctoral degrees in economics from UK. Sharing his love for public service is his wife, Jane Ramsey, who is involved in a host of commu-nity activities and organizations. She heads an effort to beautify UofL’s Belknap Campus and revitalize its surrounding south Louisville neighborhood. The Ramseys’ two daughters attended UofL. Jenny, the oldest, holds a nursing degree, while Jacque has a degree in marketing as well as an MBA.
