About Evance

4

• Manufacturing small wind turbines for over 12 years• R9000 was small wind turbine* of choice in UK – 2011• 14th fastest growing private technology company in UK

2011

• 1,500 turbines installed• Producing around 1.7GWh of energy per year• Over 8,900 tonnes of CO2 emissions saved per year • Equivalent of taking around 3,900 cars off the road

• Installations across the world• Applications in farms, telecoms,

transport, education, ...

About Zephyr

5

• Established in 1997• Spearheaded a joint research

consortium in 2002• Along with members from government,

industry and academia• To design the world’s most efficient, light-

weight small wind turbine• The Airdolphin

• Airdolphin series debuted in 2006• Sold through a worldwide dealer network in

over 30 countries

• More than 3,000 Airdolphins installed

R9000 Wind Turbine

6

• 5kW turbine• Generates 13.6MWh per annum at 6m/s

• Generate power from very low wind speed to 60m/s (130mph)

• On-grid and off-grid applications• Suitable for rural locations

• Minimal environmental impact• Low noise• Low visual impact• Minimal concrete use (1mx1mx3m)

• Outstanding durability• 20 year operational life

Airdolphin Wind Turbine

7

• 1.1kW rating• Generates 2.05MWh per annum at 6m/s

• Airdolphin is a next generation, lightweight wind turbine• Quick response to wind allowing high efficiency

• On-grid and off-grid applications• Suitable for rural locations

• Ultra lightweight• Only 20kg• Able to utilise existing infrastructure for mounting

• Outstanding durability• Power Management System

• No outside controller• All functions inside the turbine

Renewable Energy in the Developing World

8

• In 2008, more than 1.5 billion people had no access to electricity• 85 % of those lived in rural areas• Electricity is a basic precondition for almost all aspects of modern life

• Provision of a stable and reliable access to electricity in rural areas is a major social, economic and environmental change• Contributes to the alleviation of poverty, illiteracy, hunger, thirst and

disease

• The fight against climate change is one of the greatest challenges for the international community• Electrification means higher CO2 emission

• Renewable energies are the solution• Hybrid systems (renewables combined with conventional energies) • More climate friendly than traditional diesel-run systems and more

efficient • Higher investment costs are coupled with far lower running costs• Break even can be achieved within 3-5 years

Renewable Energy and Telecom

• The GSMA Green Power for Mobile Programme launched September 2008• To ‘extend mobile beyond the grid’ through the promotion of

renewable energy technologies and energy efficient base stations

• Goal to help the mobile industry use renewable energy sources• Solar, wind or sustainable bio-fuels• To power 118,000 new and existing off-grid base stations in

developing countries by 2012• Recently, this figure has reached over 20,000

• Estimate 2.5 billion litres of diesel per annum would be saved• Annual carbon emissions would be cut by up to 6.8 million

tonnes

Governmental & Private Enterprise Collaboration

• Tremendous opportunity for deployment of renewable energy in Africa• 589 million people without electricity• 77.3% of the rural population• Abundant wind and solar resources

• Requires co-operation of Government• Support of enterprise in political persuasion

and awareness• Overseas aid programs to ‘kick start’ markets

• Private enterprise collaboration• Significant sized projects need multi-national support• Banks to fund projects, industry to provide solutions

• Development of UK business in Africa• Evance-Zephyr collaboration a model for others• Involvement of local companies
