    Editorial:

Helping Students Find the Right LadderBy Tim Elmore of GrowingLeaders.com

Recently, Stephen Kelloggdid a talk at the annualTED Concordia UPortlandevent. My friendBrett Wilkes turned me onto it in a recent post.Stephen made a numberof memorable statementsabout the joy of work, something we all desire,

but few realize. From hisyouth, he always wantedto be a touring musician, with albums andmerchandise, fans andconcerts. He loves whathe now gets to do andfeels fortunate to have thechance to touchaudiences with his music.

roads behind us, longdays of sunshine beforeus, and distant tunes ofice cream truckssurrounding us. Summeris finally here!

Looking towards theupcoming months here atKETsda, werebeginningan exciting summer seriesof mini-newsletterssharing the news, events, and stories of our churchcongregations youth. It ismy hope that through the

warm months of summer, our church family cancontinue to share thewarmth of Christianfellowship with thoseamong us both young and

    young-at-heart!

    Pastor Kasper Haughton Jr.

One of his stickystatements in the TED talkwas:

Its better to be at thebottom of a ladder youwant to climb, than the top

    of a ladder you dont.

    Like most artists, when

Stephen first started, noone had heard of him andit took time to build aplatform. It didnt matter, however, that he didnthave money or payingevents. What matteredwas he was working in thefield he loved; he had thechance to do what he felt

was important and wasgifted to do.

I remember this samefeeling when I first startedmy non-profit, GrowingLeaders. No one wasgetting rich, and in theearly days it was just meand one other team

member, David Christie. We were cutting our teethin the business of leaderdevelopment and wereclimbing a steep learningcurve. But we loved it. Idwake up every morningand could hardly wait toget to work.

    Its about doing something

in our gift area and adding

    value to students.

At night, I found myselfthinking about how we

could do our work better. It wasnt about the money;it was about doingsomething in our gift areaand adding value toschools and students. Wewere at the bottom of aladderbut we loved theladder. I still do.

One of the great fears ofgraduates these days isthat theyll get stuck in a

ob they dont like andtheyll feelclaustrophobic. Itsterrifying enough to startat the bottom and payyour dues in a cause youultimately believe in. Itsstill another to do it whenyour ladder is leaningagainst the wrong wall. This is the key Id like youto pass along to thestudents you teach orparent. Identify the

mission you believe in,then dont work for the

cash, but for the cause.Even playing a small partcan make a difference.Next, make sure themission is solving aproblem or meeting aneed. Thomas Edisonsfirst patented inventionwas a machine thattabulated votes forbureaucrats ingovernment. He soondiscovered that nocongressman wantedvotes to be countedquickly as they all wantedtime to lobby for moreinfluence while the voteswere being counted. Hewas rejected. From thatpoint on, Edisondetermined he would stillbe an inventor, but alwayswork in response to aneed or demand.

    How Do You Choose YourLadder?

When passion, need, strength and opportunityall meetyou are on agood ladder:

    1. Passion the workrepresents somethingyou love doing.

    2. Need the work youdo answers a cryand solves a problem.

    3. Strength the work

you do involves youusing your primarystrength.

    4. Opportunity thework you do isntforced but is aprospect in front ofyou.

May I encourage you tohave this conversationwith a young person youknow. Ladders are

everywhere, and we musthelp students find theirs.

    This year for our

mission trip we went toH.E.A.R.T ministry inLavonia, Georgia. Wenot only did yard workoutside the facilities, but we also helpedminister to the womenthrough various skitsand worships. On topof that, we worked atthe Northeast GeorgiaAnimal Shelter downthe road from

H.E.A.R.T. toward theend of the week, helping walk and playwith the animals there. At the beginning of ourtrip we stopped inGatlinburg for theweekend to havesome time to connectwith God.

This mission trip wasamazing for mebecause we had moreof a chance to interactwith people that werenot from our group andminister to others. Weheard testimonies fromthe women there and Iwas able to attend oneof their AA meetingswhich gave me someinsight on thewomensconditions and theirrecovery process.Seeing their smiling

faces each day forworship was veryencouraging for mepersonally, and I knowour group had a lot offun with the variousskits we performed. On the last day, weperformed the LifeHouse skit and by the

    You could feel the

    strong bond our group

    had with each other.

end of it, some of thewomen were sotouched, they were intears.

Our time in Gatlinburgwas also well spent. Ifound this time usefulbecause all of thestudents and sponsorswere able to connectand get closer, which Ifeel helped us as weworked throughout the

week. Not only were weable to stay in a sceniccabin in the mountains, but we got to do variousteam building exercises, one of which included ahike in the mountainson Saturday afternoon.

We were also able touse this time to connectto God personally andas a group. You couldfeel the strong bond ourgroup had with eachother, and by the end ofthe week not only did Ifeel closer to God, but Ifeel that I had touchedeach of the womens
