Carehome.co.uk Pete Calveley Recognised for Outstanding Leadership & Contributions to care Hello and Welcome! It is that time of the year again, when we hear Christmas music, watch much loved films and sit by the fire. We now have fire places in most lounges and they are a great focal point, especially during the dark winter days. This time last year we had builders in many areas of Kernow House but I’m pleased to say that we can look forward to spending Christmas a little more peacefully this year, enjoying the decorations and real trees throughout the building. The Christmas spirit is here! There is always something happening in our home, so to keep you up to date, we have regular Residents & Families meetings. Millaton meetings will be held upstairs and Dementia Services meetings will be held in St. Piran’s shared space. The dates are as follows: Saturday 2oth April 2019 at 11 am Thursday 15 th August 2019 at 2 pm Wednesday 18 th December 2019 at 1 pm Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a peaceful, healthy New Year. We have fundraising events four times a year, when we support national or local charities. In the past year we have raised £439.60 shared between Launceston Memory Café, Admiral Nurses, Dementia UK, Barchester’s Charitable Foundation, Jeans for Genes and MacMillan. It is thanks to the generous donations we get from our relatives, staff and suppliers, that we can do this. Thank you! We are always very grateful for any donations of items we can use either for raffles or our popular 50 pence sales, so if you open a gift this Christmas and think ‘Ah, that’s just what I didn’t want!’, then please pass you unwanted gifts on, so someone else can benefit. This Christmas we are raising money for Huntington’s Association with a raffle drawn on Friday 21st December and the previous week we will have a mini Christmas market with items made and donated by volunteers and staff.

Fundraising Introducing Julie

Julie Palmer is our new home administrator. She can be found in the admin office next to the hairdressers. Welcome to Kernow, Julie!

And introducing Elaine Elaine Syms is our new admin assistant. She is the first person you meet, when coming in to Kernow House, where she sits at reception. Welcome Elaine! Elaine works during the week but at weekends Will is the person who answers the phone or greets you when coming in to the home. They are both happy to help in any way they can.

Long service awards We have had a number of staff who have been presented with long service awards. Pictured is Beverley Parsons, who has been an employee for 30 years and is our longest serving member of staff. She is seen receiving her Barchester pin and a £250 Love2Shop voucher. Well done Bev!

Winter at Kernow We have lots of exciting events coming up as we approach Christmas. Carol singing, cake decorating competition, fancy dress and a visit from alpacas dressed as reindeer are some of the things we look forward to. You can see what we’ll be up to on posters displayed on our notice boards and visit our website to see what we have been up to. After Christmas we carry on with our weekly programme of events including flexercise, pop-up cafes, sensory sessions, hymn singing and bingo and with regular visits from musical entertainers, animals and a storyteller as well as trips out when possible. In the very near future we hope to establish visits from a therapy dog called Misty and visits from children in a nearby primary school. It is all very exciting.

New Year We celebrate the New Year by having a buffet tea on New Year’s Eve and if you stay awake long enough, you may see the New Year in with a glass of bubbly and a party popper. On New Year’s Day we will have a roast lamb lunch before going to our pop-up cinema to watch ‘The Sound of Music’ singalong.

New Show Suite Opening

Deputy Lord Left Lieutenant of Edinburgh, Edward Green, unveiled the show suites for our newest care home, Queens Manor, which is set to open in February 2019. Assisted by Divisional Director, Fiona Moncur, and members of the Queens Manor team, Mr. Green cut the ribbon with a giant pair of scissors. The show suite was fitted out by Barchester’s team of expert interior designers, and provides an opportunity to see what the finished 60-bed care home will look like when complete. The show suite features spacious en-suite bedrooms and a lounge, as well as a large assisted bathroom, all designed with the comfort of residents in mind. Queens Manor is part of an extensive expansion programme, with a further 6 homes opening in 2019. The home will also include a café and private dining room, a cinema and activities room, concierge service, en-suite bedrooms with garden access for ground floor rooms, as well as a life enrichment programme of tailored activities, seasonal menus and an in-house hair salon.

Barchester’s CEO, Dr. Pete Calveley, was recently awarded the prestigious 'Outstanding Contribution to Care' award at the 2018 Laing Buisson Awards on 15th November. The esteemed Laing Buisson Awards, nicknamed “The Oscars of Health and Social Care”, are in their 13th year of recognising excellence. Judged completely independently and objectively, the awards focus on the people providing the care, as well as their advisors. Pete was also recognised at the 2018 Health Investor Power Fifty Awards, where he was presented with the ‘Outstanding Leader’ award. The ceremony celebrates the most effective and inspiring leaders across six key aspects of independent healthcare. A huge congratulations to Pete for these two fantastic achievements!
