It is packed with Sierra attractions from the Oregon border on down to the KRV, which is at the southern end of the iconic mountain range. It is an ongoing, ever-changing site. National Geographic project manager, Jim Dion, said, “Site visitors can add comments, read what others have posted and connect to Facebook or Twitter accounts to share what they’ve found. Also, it’s never too late to add unique attractions to the Map Guide; nominations are continually reviewed for possible inclusion.” Among the KRV attractions listed so far on the Map Guide are A Stone’s Throw art gallery in Kernville, the annual Isabella Lake Fishing Derby, Audubon’s Kern River Preserve in Weldon, and the annual Whiskey Flat Days celebration. So Southern California Edison is asking its customers to take an extra 10 minutes to check for overloaded wall plugs, frayed light strings and other electrical safety and fire haz- ards. “It seems like there’s never enough time to get all the preparations done for the holidays,” said Bill Messner, of SCE “But this year, we hope people will take a few moments to make sure their equipment is in good working order, and that there are no unsafe situations in the home. Most ‘accidents’ are preventable.” National Fire Protection Association statistics indicate: Thirty percent of all home fires and 38 percent of home fire deaths occur during December, January and February. On average, 260 home fires begin with Christmas trees each year, result- ing in 12 deaths, 24 injuries and $16.4 million in property damage. Candles start 45 percent of home decoration fires. The Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates that each year about 4,000 injuries associated with electric extension cords result in emergency room visits. Thirteen percent of these injuries involve children under 5; electrical burns to the mouth accounted for 50 percent of the injuries to young children. Use only lighting and cords approved by the Underwriters Laboratories (UL), an independent, non- profit organization that tests electrical components and equipment for potential hazards. One day asmy wife and Iwere returningfrom Delano byway of Greenhornon State Route155, we decidedto look at a cabinthat was for salein Alta Sierra.

What wewanted wassomething we could use as a get-a-way: a place for rest and relax-ation.

After we saw it we loved it,wanted it and bought it.

Within a month we were spend-ing our weekends at the cabin(which was built in 1919.) Beforethe first month was over we real-ized that what we had, was not aget away for rest and relaxation. Itwas, instead, a constant stream of“why isn't that working,” “whatblew the fuse,” and “what are thosenoises and that smell?”

The first weekend we stayedthere, we noticed an evil smellcoming from our kitchen oven. Itook it apart and found a nest withthree dead mice in various stagesof decomposition. That’s where theodor came from and I deducedthat lighting up the oven to warmthe kitchen, had baked the threeblind mice.

Next we heard attic noiseswhich turned out to be family ofracoons. It took three months anda case of catfood to get rid of them.

Our Casa de LotsaworkThings I Have Noticed...

About the time they were evicted, afamily of skunks moved into thecrawlspace beneath our floor.

We learned a lot about skunks inthe next two months, mostly how tocatch them, but found nothing onhow to safely release them from theHave-a-Heart Trap used to catchthem.

Here’s what did (and still do). After catching the skunk and trans-porting it to away from the cabin, Iheld a blanket up (one I didn’t wantto use again, ever!) between me andthe trapped skunk. Then I openedthe door of the trap, wedged it witha stick, and backed away quickly.

This usually works if I don’t falldown while backing up. When Ifinally got rid of the skunks, then itwas on to a war with mice, but thatis a story for another time.

As the years rolled by and therepairs and critter wars continued,we knew for sure that “rest andrelaxation” at the cabin was not inthe cards.

Eventually I made a sign that wenailed to the porch railing that read:“Casa de Lotsawork.” And it was.

We sold that cabin long ago, butdrive by it from time to time. Wenotice that the porch needs replace-ment, the roof needs work and thechimney needs repair. But I’m surethat someday, someone will buy thecabin for rest and relaxation. Goodluck with that!

Want to show appreciation to Good SamaritanAt 10 p.m. on the night of Saturday, Sept. 10, we were driving west on Highway 178.

At the corner of 178 and Sierra Way, a Dodge Ram, heading south, failed to honor thestop sign at Sierra Way and slammed into our small blue Smart car. We were spunaround and all very much bruised up.

A white truck with a tall young man wearing a cowboy hat and boots stopped to assistus and call 911. He was in a hurry, since he was late for work. He was going east onHighway 178 toward Onyx when stopped to help. We would like to find this young manto thank him for assisting us until help arrived. We hope this young man reads TheCourier. PICKS OF THE WEEK:“Fright Night” (R) — This ’80s clas-

sic had to be resurrected to cash in onthe vampire trend, but at least thissupernatural thriller’s undead heart isin the right place. Charlie (AntonYeltsin), a high school senior, thinks hehas it all. When people in the neigh-borhood go missing, a trail of evidenceindicates that a mysterious neighbor(Colin Farrell) is actually a vampire.

While the movie isn’t especiallyscary, viewers will be drawn in by tal-ented performances and a script thatdrums on the raw nerves of the psy-che. Farrell’s vampire radiates the rightlevel of predatory seduction that con-geals into a memorable and multi-dimensional monster. Whether it’sCharlie’s desire for maturity, his singlemother’s desperation or his girlfriend’syouthful beauty and vulnerability,“Fright Night” knows how to getunder the skin and add weight to theclimactic conflict.

“Rise of the Planet of the Apes”(PG-13) — This out-of-the-blue rebootsticks to the good old “We’re the realmonsters” theme, but manages to winthe war against the stale flavor ofanother out-of-the-blue franchisereboot. Smarty-pantsed apes decidebeing used as test subjects isn’t sogreat, and an army of primate anar-chists is formed.

Caesar, thecomputer-animat-ed ape with supersmarts, is a won-drous achievementmade from com-puter wizardryand the bestmotion-captureactor in the biz,Andy Serkis(Smeagol in “Lord

of the Rings” and the big guy in the2005 “King Kong.”) The story and thethemes are predictable, but the emo-tional bond between James Francoand a super-sympathetic CG ape is atrue surprise.

“Kung Fu Panda 2” (PG) — Afterrealizing his potential and achieving hisdream of being the Dragon Warrior,Po the Panda (voiced by an emphaticJack Black) learns his Kung Fu adven-ture is just beginning. When an evilforce using a new weapon threatensthe realm and the future of Kung Fu,Po and the Furious Five engage on amesmerizing series of actionsequences to save the day.

This spectacle is less of a touchingmorality tale and more of a wildaction-comedy for the kids. While thestorytelling lacks discipline, Dream-works earns a black belt in visualsplendor and creative combat.

2011 was just ablur with onlyDecember leftuntil the end-of-the-year.

Deer season isover, some of youmay have evenhad a chance at awild fall turkey, but for most of uswe had the dom-estic equal, not as challenging butboth taste great. Upland gamebirds, ducks, rabbit and squirrel arestill in season so go out and havesome fun.

Here is some news for youDerby fisherman: the nets are inthe water at French Gulch Marinaand the fish have arrived. TheDerby fish will get an extra feedingthis year, which will make threemeals a day. This should beef themup a bit

With the Jet Stream droppingdown to its winter location, it

brings lots of low pressure fronts, changing the moods of the fishevery few days. This has the bassfishermen pulling the hair out oftheir jigs trying to put togethersome sort of a pattern.

The crappie, it seems, are whereyou find them. Or better yet, whereyou find them hungry. Speaking ofcrappie, they should have a bellyfull of eggs. It is their time for thewinter spawn. I think minnows arewhat they want to eat these days.

The lake’s shoreline trout bit’sthat time of year.

This is a perfect time to grabyour camera and your hiking shoesand get some exercise while takingsome pictures of the lake while thelevel is low. It really is a great wayto spend a couple of hours.

Remember: a dry line catches nofish.

Jack Duitsman, PastorFather’s Heart Foursquare Church,Kernville

“And the Wordbecame flesh, anddwelt among us,and we saw Hisglory, glory as of theonly begotten of theFather, full of graceand truth . . . For thelaw was giventhrough Moses;grace and truth wererealized throughJesus Christ. - John 1:14,17

One of the beautiful aspects of truthis that it is always truth. There may be agreat deal of evolving parts to the make-up of cultural shift, but a constant in thisprocess is the bedrock of truth. Simplyspoken, truth is what it is, and it impactseach generation with a similar choice tobe embraced or rejected. To the extentthat it can be made chic, glamorous, hip, pithy, or cute, the end result of truth cut-ting across the grain of human willing-ness to welcome will always be thesame.

By our very nature we do “love dark-ness rather than light.” Revisit the pairof Scripture quoted above, and let’smove together to the Father’s heart insending Jesus to restore relationshipwith humanity whom He loves.

In and of itself, truth becomes a pow-erfully unattainable force that ripsthrough our experience like a weaponof mass destruction. This undeniablereality is brought into full focus by theMosaic law given on Mount Sinai, andthe utter failure of humankind to towthe line of truth laid down by God’s 10-commandment invitation to return toHim through this method.

Remember, truth was and alwayswill be truth, and the fault did not lie inthe commandments, but in our inabilityto live accordingly. To such a conun-drum Jesus came, and John records Hiscoming as an advent of truth incarnate, but in a wrapping of grace. Perhaps

simple words can never convey thepower of God in adequate ways, but thefolding together of truth and gracemakes all the difference in the world. What once was unattainable eventhough true, became embraceable whilenot diminishing the truth one whit. Wemay attempt to muddy the waters ofunderstanding and application with ourself-willed desire to live life according toour dictates, but the Father’s willingnessto walk us out of our own rebellion isattested to by the never ending work inus by the Holy Spirit.

Two times the Apostle Johndescribed the coming of Jesus as theperfect marriage between grace andtruth. Too much focus on grace and webecome sloppy in allowing the truth ofGod to work continued freedom in oursouls. Too much focus on truth and webecome locked into legalism and a lifeprocess that relies upon our own abilityto work out what only the Father canmake alive in us. Even here we aretempted to throw up our hands asthough this perfect balance is simply toomuch to ask of such imperfection as welive with on an ongoing basis, but weneed not give in to this deceptive lie ofthe flesh. Notice that in sending graceand truth in the perfect combination, the origin was heavenly, and the appli-cation was earthly. It is the desire andwork of the Father to restore relation-ship to Himself, and the outworking ofthis desire is the transformation thatcomes to our hearts by the work of theHoly Spirit. Certainly there must be awilling cooperation on our part, but theenergy to become the perfect blendingplace for grace and truth is the Father’swork. How remarkable to be set free bythe eternal nature of truth within a cul-ture that abhors such ancient land-marks, and yet to be changed in anenvironment of grace that forever fos-ters praise and thanks from hearts thatunderstand the amazing nature of whatis happening within us. Let's bereminded this advent season that this iswho our Savior is, how He came tobring us the love of God, and how weare now invited to live.
