Main Event Boxing and MMA studio couldn’t have set up shop in Keremeos at a more opportune time.

“Fitness is the message,” said owners “Coach” Rob Pelletier and Donna Davies. The new business is sure to complement “healthy com-munity” initiatives currently being developed by the village, the region-al district and Interior Health.

“There isn’t a lot in the way of fitness facilities in the area,” Coach Rob continues, “people use the rec centre, or have their own fitness machines at home, but they lack a ‘fitness atmosphere’ - something we can provide.”

The two feel they have the for-mula to make bring fitness to every resident of Keremeos, young or old.

“Home programs and exercise routines eventually fail for most people because inspiration is lack-ing. They’ll listen to a DVD for a few weeks, lose their motiva-tion, and their exercise equipment becomes a very expensive clothes hanger.”

Rob and Donna have put togeth-er a weekly schedule that provides instruction and workout time for every age category.

Donna’s Pilates class, for in-stance, has an 82 year old resident who faithfully attends the sessions.

“Women of all ages really em-brace the programs,” Donna said, “We’ve been really blessed with the

interest the community has shown in our business. The village has been very supportive.”

Programs are broken down into two categories - “gentle fit” and “super fit.”

People who are recovering from injury, seniors and others benefit from a slow, lightweight introduc-tion to exercise. As they progress, they move into a higher strength, higher intensity “super fit” program that aims at full body conditioning. A “lunch fit” class allows partici-pants the opportunity to work low impact exercises at gentle or super fit paces.

“These are low impact exer-cises that someone can do without working up a sweat,” said Donna.

Afternoon classes are aimed at students and kids, as are weekend sessions that are open to five year olds and up. There is also a teen program, where adolescents are en-couraged to bring their homework, workout, connect with peers and relax in the “Hard Knuckles Cafe.”

“Parents like the layout,” Coach Rob said, “they can relax in the cafe while the kids work out.”

Finding suitable commercial space for a gym wasn’t easy, Donna and Rob found, espe-cially having come from Toronto, where venues could be easily found. They moved to the area in order to be closer to Donna’s father, who

resides in the village. For the hard core, Coach Rob

brings a professional level of coaching expertise to the commu-nity for those who are interested in mixed martial arts, boxing and grappling. He’s been a certified personal boxing trainer for more than 30 years, and has worked with both professional and amateur boxers.

“Our name is boxing and mixed martial arts, but we really are a fitness facility,” said Donna, “ we welcome everyone in the communi-ty - we’re much more than a boxing facility.” She noted that the gym proves to be a pleasant surprise to those who have dropped in to date.

We really can get anybody into shape,” Coach Rob added, “most people understand the need to ex-ercise and eat healthy foods - that the two blend together in moving towards fitness.

If a person is willing to make good lifestyle choices, we can pro-vide the rest of what they need to accomplish their fitness goals.”

Fitness is the main event at this Keremeos businessBy Steve Arstad [email protected]

Healthy CommunitiesResidents in the Interior are not as healthy

as they could be.Over 80 per cent of our population re-

port having at least one or more risk factors for chronic disease which include being a

smoker, being physically inactive, eating an unhealthy diet, or being overweight.

Chronic diseases are the largest cause of death in the region, but the risk factors are

largely preventable if we take action. The intent of the Healthy Communities

Initiative is to improve the health of resi-dents through policy and environmental

changes that help make the healthy choice the easy choice.

By partnering with local governments, Interior Health will help identify commu-nity priorities and develop action plans to promote wellness and improve the health

of residents.

“Gentle Fitness” classes allow just about everyone the opportunity to participate in fitness routines at Main Event. One of Donna’s pilates classes has an 81 year old participant attending regular classes.

EditorialBusiness venture well suited to public health initiatives

“Coach” Rob and Donna Pelletier’s arrival in Keremeos was nicely timed to coincide with the village, regional district and Interior Health initiative to build healthy communities in the region.

The Main Event Boxing and MMA Studio provides Lower Similkameen residents with a unique opportunity to get fit - one that they probably wouldn’t have similar opportunities for in a bigger city.

The Pelletiers have some unique selling points to their downtown gym - they both have skill sets in fitness methods and coach-ing as well as having the ability to provide one on one advice and training.

The Main Event facility is comfortable and intimate, the proprietors genuinely inter-ested in “getting Keremeos in shape,”catering to the full spectrum of the village’s popula-tion. Patrons have easy access to both Coach Rob and Donna, who are always nearby. Helpful fitness advice is always available.

Their business provides little extras that might mean all the difference to someone aiming for a healthier lifestyle, but lacking the knowledge or motivation to pursue their goal for the length of time it takes to make an exercise routine a regular habit.

The studio is not only a great addition to the business community in Keremeos, it ap-pears to fit in nicely with current local and re-gional policies designed to improve the health of Lower Similkameen residents.

We hope these facts aren’t lost on those involved in the Healthy Community initia-tive, as there may be opportunities - from a business and a social perspective - that could prove mutually beneficial to all, through col-laborative efforts to promote regional fitness.

The New Prosperity min-eral deposit near Williams Lake is described by the industry as one of the larg-est in the world, containing 5.3 billion pounds of copper and 13.3 million ounces of gold.

The Harper govern-ment’s decision to reject open-pit mine development for a second time is seen by elected officials in the Cariboo region as a disaster. One of Quesnel’s sawmills is preparing to close for good, and I’ve been told there is more to come as the post-pine beetle era unfolds.

Here in the B.C. capital, the decision is mainly viewed as a huge mistake. Taseko Mines is going to court to show that the federal panel used the wrong design when reviewing the company’s expensively revised plan. The province has permitted two successful mines that operate in the same area, one of which is run by Taseko.

In Ottawa, this is a Su-

preme Court of Canada test case over who owns the land and the mineral wealth underneath.

In traditional Canadian law, the province owns it. This was highlighted in the recent discussion between B.C. Premier Christy Clark and Alberta’s Alison Red-ford over royalties from oil.

Six aboriginal communi-ties make up the Tsilhqot’in Nation, which has a long and bitter history of resis-tance against the Crown. They almost won a declara-tion of title to 40,000 hect-ares known as the Nemiah Valley: forests, wild horses, minerals and all, in a 339-day trial that ended in 2007.

Their case suffered a set-back at the B.C. Court of Appeal, and is now before the highest court. Aborigi-nal rights have been estab-lished, but this would be the first clear title.

Tsilhqot’in tribal chair Joe Alphonse was pleas-antly surprised to see Taseko turned down again. He said the Tsilhqot’in National Government is releasing its

own mining policies soon.“We welcome opportuni-

ties to look at projects that are environmentally sound and we need economic op-portunities,” Alphonse told the Williams Lake Tribune.

Somehow efforts to move mine waste rock from Tez-tan Biny (Fish Lake) to a sealed storage site two kilo-metres away are not enough to protect groundwater, al-though they are sufficient at the nearby Gibraltar and Mount Polley mines. And Alphonse makes it clear this mysterious environmental problem will be solved once he and his fellow chiefs have control of the resource.

A Supreme Court of Canada ruling on aborigi-nal title is required to settle this. If some limited form of title is at last defined for the treaty-less majority of B.C., or at least Tsilhqot’in territory, the fate of the mine may become clear.

Conventional wisdom on this is that the mining company didn’t try hard enough to establish a work-ing relationship with the

Tsilhqot’in. For his part, Taseko CEO Russell Hall-bauer says the chiefs refused to meet with him, which isn’t surprising from a group that doesn’t recognize the B.C. forests ministry either.

Here’s a sample of the volume of evidence that may determine the future of B.C.

Archeological studies presented at trial describe “18 roasting and/or pit de-pressions” at Teztan Biny. It’s not clear if these were for seasonal food prepara-tion or for pit houses, which would indicate a more per-manent settlement at the lake. Nor is it clear whether these “cultural depressions” have been identified as being of Tsilhqot’in origin.

Oral histories are also uncertain. Tsilhqot’in wit-nesses testified that Teztan Biny has been used in the 20th century as a hunting and fishing camp.

The mine was rejected due to ill-defined cultural as well as environmental con-cerns. B.C. residents could finally see some answers this year.

Village maintenance staff tore down public washrooms in Pine and Memorial Parks this week in preparation for construction of new facilities this spring.

The B.C. government announced their intention to introduce legislation during the current legislative session to change local elec-tions from a three-year to a four-year cycle beginning with the 2014 elections, Communi-ty, Sport and Cultural Development Minister Coralee Oakes announced on Ferbruary 25.

The move is subject to legislative approval. If it passes, the next B.C. local elections after November, 2014 will be in October, 2018.

“There are pros and cons to the change,” admitted Keremeos Mayor Manfred Bauer, who said the change won’t affect his decision as to whether to run or not.

“It should result in reduced costs for elections, and more continuity in terms of politicians being able to see projects through during their term of office,” he added.

Bauer speculated that the change in

term may result in fewer people stepping forward to put their names on the ballot because of the additional time commitment. “Will it result in the possiblity of more bye-lections as people find themselves unable to serve their whole term?” he wondered, “I haven’t seen any stats from other provinces regarding that.”

The extended term of office will apply to B.C.’s mayors and all elected officials serv-ing municipalities, regional districts, parks boards, school boards and the Islands Trust.

Moving to four-year terms was recom-mended by the Local Government Elections Task Force. Last year, the Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) passed a resolution supporting extension of the term of office for elected local government officials from three to four years. The BC School Trustees Association also supports the change.

All other Canadian provinces hold local government elections every four years.

To the Editor: I am now going on to my 93rd birthday, so this story originates approximately 75 years ago.

We were young and foolish then, and there was quite a large group of us moun-tain climbing above Summerland.

On Easter morning, about a mile up on a steep grade was this huge rock of many tons, just teetering.

Could we push it off ? Well, we got sticks and prys and worked like slaves and finally got this rock loose. It started down the slope, picking up speed, at times flying

through the air. Then it got to a flat spot and slowed down until it got to the highway and stopped.

We were just breathing a sigh of relief and the blame thing made one more flip and landed in the middle of the highway.

Luckily enough, there were no cars there.

My advice to you young folks today - Don’t roll rocks down mountains.

You have no idea where they are going to wind up.

Wilf Miller, Keremeos

The board is awaiting feedback on the proposal for moving two pro-d days from August to be included within the calendar bookends, September 1 to June 30. We will be going through all of the calendar consultation responses and feedback after the response deadline and then having a discussion at our regular board meeting on March 12 at which time we will make our final decision.

Pink Shirt Day was celebrated in all of our schools on February 26. This event is sponsored by the Boys and Girls Club and most schools were tinged pink as people are asked to wear pink on this day to make a statement against bullying.

We are happy to announce that our dis-trict was successful in its grant application to the Construction Foundation of BC. We are unsure at this time how much the grant will be as the foundation is beginning to raise funds for this purpose. Funds from the foundation will be used to upgrade our shop classes in the district and to hopefully entice more students to pursue a career in the trades.

Our second YES-2-IT Trades Exploration Day was a great success. This year the hands-on program for grades six and seven students focused on the culinary industry. We received a $4,000 grant from the Industry Training As-sociation to support this. A video of this day is available at http://youtu.be/Os100yjiY7g.

We would like to thank Boyd Turnbull for coordinating the event as well as all of our other teachers and administrators who worked behind the scenes to make this day happen. This event could not happen without the tradespeople and businesses who volun-teered their time. A big thank you to Nicola Haamers, Theo Walta, Randy Watson and Cody Winser from Valu Plus in Keremeos.

At the regular meeting, the board also approved the grad trips for all three of our high schools. Students from SOSS and SESS will travel to Silverwood, Idaho on June 26 and 27.

Please mark your calendars for May 28. On this day we will host an inquiry sharing day at the Watermark Hotel in Osoyoos from 1 to 7 p.m. At this event schools from around the district will showcase their in-quiry questions, where they are going with their learning, how they are getting there and where they are going to next. We invite all of our parents, community members, and education partners to drop in anytime from 1 to 7 p.m. to see what is going on around the district, and ask questions. More infor-mation will be forthcoming. Please contact your school principal for more information.

The BCSTA Stability for Students Action Plan was also discussed. The goal of this plan is to ensure immediate and long-term stability in the provision of educational programs for students in B.C.’s public education system. Our board is hopeful that student success will not be compromised during or after the resolution of the BC Supreme Court ruling between the Province of B.C. and the BC Teacher’s Federation.

We hope that resolution of class size and composition matters occurs at the provincial bargaining table and that when changes to class size and composition are required whether through negotiation, legislation or court ruling, they be phased in so as to minimize disruption to students. We are also urging the ministry that any costs related to changes in class size and composition be fully funded by the provincial government with no negative impact on current funding levels.

Should you have any questions, please contact me at 250-498-1333.

New Integrated Library SystemThe board received a report from the In-

tegrated Library System Committee about the process of selection of a new vendor to provide an integrated library system. The successful vendor was Polaris. The com-mittee based their decision on a number of factors including usability by the public, ef-ficiency for staff and cost. Phase two, which includes a training component for staff and transition from the former system, will begin over the next months.

Elementary students at Similka-meen Elementary Secondary School gathered in the school’s elementary gym to support and encourage anti bullying strategies on Wednesday, February 26.

Capably led by members of the school’s leadership class, the stu-dents were encouraged to imagine themselves as regular recipients of a bullying campaign.

The assembly then focussed on what constituted bullying, also pro-viding instruction regarding how to deal with instances of it.

The heart of the message came with acknowledgement that bullying can rise from innocent circumstances from students who simply aren’t thinking of the consequences of their actions.

Leadership student Tina Schaefer talked about the challenges of getting through school and adolescence.

“We’re all faced with so many changes during these years, so what is there to gain by making things harder through bullying?” she asked her audience.

Leadership student Lloyd Car-leton also offered helpful advice for students experiencing bullying. He pointed out a number of different av-enues a student could follow at SESS for assistance, including enlisting the aid of other designated students, tell-ing adults, or standing up for oneself.

“There really isn’t anything new,” Ruth Sulentich, Commu-nity and Aboriginal Relations Manager for Fortis Inc., said earlier this week regarding fur-ther progress on Fortis’ Simlkameen dam pro-

posal.Fortis received an in-

vestgative permit from the province recently, which allows them to further explore the pos-sibility of constructing a 165 metre high dam on the Similkameen River approximately

15 kilometres west of Princeton.

The permit was is-sued after controversy last summer following a series of ads that ran in local papers mistak-enly referring to the investigative permit as a “Disposition of Crown

Land.”Fortis’ investigative

permit will allow Fortis to explore the projects’ economic and environ-mental impacts, and is valid for the next five years.

Sulentech said Fortis is now in the process of

arranging for several open houses in Similka-meen communities, in addition to schedul-ing meetings with local officials and the Joint Committee to discuss the project more fully. She said the investiga-tive process is expected

to take up to two and a half years, and expects the public information sessions to begin in late spring or early summer.

Several Similka-meen politicians have expressed the need for more information on the project. Similka-

meen Valley Planning Society Chair Manfred Bauer said the society recently wrote Fortis Project Manager Doyle Sam, inviting him to the next SVPS meeting on March 26 to update members on the pro-posal.

Cawston’s Marilyn Bergen takes second place for Ambrosia apple recipeBy Steve Arstad [email protected]

Kaleden Fire Depart-ment’s donated to Penticton Fire Depart-ment boot drive for Muscular Dystrophy. At left is Penticton Fire Fighter Ryan Bazley , Kaleden’s Leslie Roos and Linda Dahl.Donation was made on February 22.

Cawston’s Marilyn Bergen was excited to hear recently that she won second place in a national recipe contest that featured the Am-brosia apple, which originated in Cawston on the farm of Wilfred and Sally Mennell.

Bergen’s prize was a juicer, something she says will see a lot of use.“I was surprised to nd out I’d won second

place,” Bergen said, “I think it helped me that most people put in dessert recipes. The recipe was supposed to have a healthy element to it as well, which helped.”

Bergen’s recipe - Ambrosia Kale Salad - uses a leafy green vegetable that appears to gaining

popularity due to its high content of vitamins.

Kale grows well in the Similkameen, and overwinters too.

“We weren’t very familiar with it, but started growing it on our farm and we’re starting to eat it more,” Bergen said of the veg-etable. She prepares her salad with Cawston - grown walnuts.

“They are beautiful nuts, easy to open and come out in nearly whole pieces,” she said.

Kale has a ten-dency to be tough, but can be served by removing tough veins from the leaves and sautéing them in olive oil.

Ambrosia Kale Salad

• 4 cups packed raw kale torn into small pieces

• 2 large Ambrosia apples cut into small wedges (save 1/4 cup for dressing)

• 3/4 cup roasted walnuts (save 1/4 cup for dressing)

• 1/2 cup raisins• 1 cup thinly sliced celery• 2 tbsp. lemon juice• 2 tbsp. honey• 2 tbsp. Dijon mustard• 2 tbsp. water• 1/4 tsp. sea salt• 1/4 tsp. black pepperMethod• In a large bowl put kale, apples, wal-

nuts, raisins, and celery. Toss thoroughly.• In a blender put the 1/4-cup of

apples, 1/4 cup of walnuts, lemon juice, honey, mustard, water, sea salt and pep-per. Blend well.

• Pour the dressing over the kale mix-ture. Adjust the amount you use depend-ing on your taste preference.

Put into a salad bowl for serving.

COUGHING ALL AROUND USAt this time of year, coughing is all around us. If we aren’t doing it, others around us are. It’s a good idea to keep at least three feet away from a cougher to reduce the risk of being sprayed with germs and viruses. If you are the cougher, try not to get too close to other people.

WHAT ARE YOUR CONERNS?As people age, they start to worry about challenges that lie ahead. The ve top concerns are: loss of independence, declining health, not having enough money, not being able to live in their own home and isolation and loneliness. These are very real fears. Taking good care of our bodies and keeping socially engaged will help keep us healthier longer.

HAVE YOU HAD YOUR WALK TODAY?A century and a half ago, people in a more rural agricultural society, worked hard physically and walked home from work. Today, we’ve exchanged our legs for cars as our main method of movement. Our bodies are designed to walk a lot and it’s been proven that walking daily is good for us. Have you had your walk today?

DO YOU AVOID EATING CARROTS?Some people avoid eating too many carrots because they are supposed to contain “a lot of sugar”. Actually, one pound of boiled carrots contains about 3 teaspoons of sugar. The sugar does enter the bloodstream quickly but normal portion sizes of carrots doesn’t make this a problem.

Rumours abound in the world of health. Our pharmacists keep up to date to what’s going on in this world and can help you separate truth from ction.
