EditorialChampioning another globalbusiness

Keppelite I March 2007

A milestone for both Singapore and Keppel. Thatwas what the inauguration of Keppel Seghers UluPandan NEWater Plant established.

It is not only Singapore’s but also East Asia’s largestwater reuse plant, and the second largest in theworld.

For Singapore, the Keppel Seghers Ulu PandanNEWater Plant significantly augments the existingthree NEWater Plants to meet more than 15% ofour water needs today. It is an important chapterin our nation’s Four National Taps (localcatchments, imported water, NEWater anddesalinated water) strategy to build a secure, reliable, diversified, and sustainable supply ofwater for Singaporeans.

For Keppel, the plant is a showcase of ourenvironmental and engineering capabilities, and akey platform for Keppel Integrated Engineering(KIE) to further strengthen its foothold in theoverseas water treatment market.

As the only Singapore company with the expertiseto offer both solid waste and wastewatertreatment solutions, and a footprint in more than25 countries, KIE is poised to become a worldleader and contribute to develop Singapore into aglobal hub for environmental excellence.

In the environmental infrastructure business, weseek to replicate the success of our Offshore &Marine business in developing another globalchampion.

As in our Offshore & Marine business, KIE is stayingahead of competition through technologyleadership and differentiation. To widen its leadingedge, KIE has established the Keppel Environmental

Technology Centre to drive and direct researchefforts across its Centres of Excellence in variousdisciplines in Belgium and Singapore. In addition, collaborative research are conducted with leadingacademic and industrial research institutionsaround the world.

Strategic alliances are also being pursued with like-minded partners in Europe and Asia to build ourpresence in existing markets and accelerate ourpenetration into new ones.

KIE saw significant milestones over the past year, with the groundbreaking for Keppel Seghers TuasWaste-to-Energy Plant in Singapore, as well asthe clinching of the billion-dollar award for anintegrated solid waste management facility inQatar. KIE also secured numerous solid wastetreatment, water and wastewater treatmentprojects overseas, and further strengthened itsleadership for imported waste-to-energy solutionsin China where it has 60% of the market.

Indeed, the building blocks of our environmentalbusiness are moving in place.

On top of its own credentials and capabilities, KIEhas the added advantage of the Group’s networkand resources. With Keppel’s characteristic CanDo! attitude, foresight and hard work, and bybringing together the Group’s efforts, we arebeginning yet another chapter in the story of ToughMen, Bold Visions in the Keppel Group.

The making of another global leader is on track.

Significantly, this feat wasaccomplished without anylost time incident in over2.5 million man-hours.Keppel O&M’s commitmentto safety saw their 10-yearlow Accident Frequency Rateof 1.62 for the Group’sSingapore yards in 2005further improved to 1.20 in2006.

NEWater is treated usedwater that has undergonestringent purification andtreatment process usingadvanced dual-membrane(microfiltration and reverseosmosis) and ultraviolettechnologies.

Since 2003, NEWater inSingapore has been used forwafer fabrication processes,non-potable applications inmanufacturing processes aswell as air-con cooling towersin commercial buildings. Thishas freed up a large amountof potable water for otherpurposes.

NEWater is currently blendedwith reservoir water and thenundergoes conventionalwater treatment to producedrinking water.

NEWater is ultra-cleanbecause it goes through amulti-barrier waterreclamation process thatcomprises three key stages:– Micro/Ultra filtration– Reverse Osmosis– Ultraviolet Disinfection

Step 1: MicrofiltrationTreated secondary effluentgoes through auto strainersto filter out largerparticulates. It is then passedthrough membranes tofilter out suspended solids,disease-causing bacteria andsome viruses. These areretained on the membrane.

The filtered water containsonly dissolved salts andorganic molecules.

Step 2: Reverse OsmosisIn this stage, a semi-permeable membrane withtiny pores allows only verysmall molecules like watermolecules to pass through.Undesirable contaminantssuch as bacteria, viruses, heavy metals, nitrateschloride, sulphate, disinfection by-products,aromatic hydrocarbons andpesticides cannot penetratethe membrane. Hence,NEWater is Reverse Osmosiswater that is free from virusesand bacteria and containsvery low levels of salts andorganic matters.

This RO process is in twostages, and a low pressureinterstage booster is usedbetween the two stages torecover energy from thesecond stage reject.

Step 3: UltravioletDisinfectionReverse osmosis produceswater of a very high-grade.In this stage, ultraviolet lightis used to ensure that anyremaining organism isinactivated.

Alkaline chemicals are thenadded to restore the pHbalance, following which theNEWater is ready for use.

Two seemingly differentindividuals with two verydifferent causes, yet theyshare the same strengths –tenacity in the face ofadversity and strong will toovercome challenges.

Keppelites heard their storiesat the second installment ofthe Grow Beyond talk, entitled Scaling New Heights, held on 21 March 2007 atRaffles Hotel. Our two guestspeakers were Mr KhooSwee Chiow, well-knownSingaporean adventurer andMr Jack Sim, founder ofWorld Toilet Organisation.

Although a familiar face tomost Singaporeans, notmany people know thatMr Khoo has conqueredMount Everest not once, buttwice. He is also the firstSoutheast Asian and fourthin the world to have climbedthe 7 Summits and reachedboth North and South polesor what is known as the“Adventure Grand Slam.”

And scaling heights is not hisonly forte. He holds theGuinness World Record forthe Longest Scuba Dive ina controlled environment, has swam across the Straitsof Malacca, cycled fromSingapore to Beijing andrepresented Singapore asone of the torch-bearers inthe 2004 Olympics inAthens.

Looking for new heights

But his first love has to bescaling new heights. Hispassion began with a a climbup Kilimanjaro. Then he waspart of the first Singaporeanexpedition to reach MountEverest. Within the span ofone year, he also conqueredthe highest peak for each ofthe other six continents andcompleted what is known asthe 7 Summits. He sharedhow planning, training andmental preparation are keyto reaching his goals.

Another demonstration ofhis determination was in

December 2004 when heswam from Indonesia to hishometown, Port Dickson, across the Straits of Malaccasuccessfully in 22 hours over42km. Many do not knowthat amazingly, he onlystarted to learn how to swimthe front crawl in June 2004.

Besides sharing his successes,Mr Khoo also shared on howhe coped with failure. Hefailed to reach North Pole thefirst time when he sufferedfrom frostbite. He also failedto swim across the EnglishChannel due to hypothermia.

His pearl of wisdom duringthese seeming setbacks,“Enjoy your success for fiveminutes. Endure your failurefor five minutes. After that, move on.”

The second speaker at thetalk was Mr Jack Sim,founder of the WorldToilet Organisation (WTO).Although his obstacles areless apparent, they are noless formidable.

Mr Sim started toiling for hiscause for cleaner toilets inresponse to a statement from

the-then Prime MinisterMr Goh Chok Tong. Mr Gohmentioned that the stateof public restrooms wasone way to measure socialgraciousness. Recognisingthat there was still much tobe desired, Mr Sim tackledthe taboo subject matterby establishing first, theRestroom Association ofSingapore, then the WTO.

He soon found that hisefforts were hindered bybureaucratic red tape eventhough he was promotingsocial good. Undeterred andspurred on by the challenge,he was able to rally mediasupport for his cause andorganised the first WorldToilet Summit in 2001.

But the restroom king,Mr Sim, was not satisfied torest on his laurels. He wenton to influence governmentsto relook at their policies, regulations and laws to makesure that sanitation issueswere not passed over.

Mr Sim is certainly makinghis mark. The WTO today isthe first non-governmentworld body from Singapore.Since the first World ToiletSummit, Mr Sim has surfacedthe issue of sanitation inKorea, Taiwan, Shanghai,Belfast and Moscow. In2004, Mr Sim was awardedthe inaugural SingaporeGreen Plan award, which isnow known as thePresident’s Award for theEnvironment. In 2006,Mr Jack Sim was awardedthe Social Entrepreneur ofthe Year by the SchwabFoundation in recognition ofhis contributions.

Bowled over by Mr Sim’s sense of humour – (From Left) Mr Sven Ullring, Director of Keppel Corporation, Mr Teo Soon Hoe, Group FinanceDirector of Keppel Corporation, Mr Choo Chiau Beng, Senior Executive Director of Keppel Corporation and Mr Tong Chong Heong, ManagingDirector and COO of Keppel O&M

Multi-tasking.Mr Khoo Swee Chiowwhen asked how he did his “big business” duringhis 22-hour swim across the Straits of Malacca.

But Mr Sim continues toaim high. His next project isto raise the Global SanitationBond Fund with a target ofUSD$10 billion.

Keppelites were bowledover by Mr Khoo’s andMr Sim’s candid sharingo f e x p e r i e n c e s a n dperspectives. And questions

for the two came on fastand furious.

MR NG TECK MONGTreasurer/VP(Administration),Keppel Cebu ShipyardAfter only a year of workingin Keppel, Teck Mong, whowas then Accountant inKeppel Shipyard, was offereda job posting in Keppel CebuShipyard Inc (Keppel Cebu)as its Treasurer/Vice Presidentfor Administration. It was adefining moment for hiscareer then.

Growing beyond bordersIn this second instalment of the series on Keppel Offshore & Marine’s (KeppelO&M) talent development initiative, we continue to focus on key Finance Officerswho have been posted overseas in leadership positions as part of their jobrotation. Keppelite finds out how their exposure to different working cultureshave moulded and enhanced their management skills.

He said, “In April 2006, I wastold there was an opening inKeppel Cebu and was askedif I was keen to take up thepost. As it was to be my firstposting overseas, I wasnaturally apprehensive andonly decided to take up thepost after discussions withmy wife.”

Ever the thorough worker,Teck Mong did his researchon Cebu and familiarised

himself with the local cultureand customs. Keppel alsoprovided a short orientationprogramme for him beforehe left.

New challenges were notunexpected. Now in thePhilippines, he commented,“The scope of work is widerand processes are different.I oversee a larger team ofstaff and have to approachmatters from differentperspectives. Not only doI have to live up to whatmy predecessors haveestablished, but also toimprove on them.

“Despite the challenges ofadjusting to the lifestyle, local cultures and customs,I built up rapport with mycolleagues. Mr Fok Swee Yin(President of Keppel CebuShipyard) is a veryexperienced andunderstanding boss. Theother Singaporeans attachedhere have been very helpfuland the locals are veryfriendly and hospitable.

“Even though we work sixfull days a week, I try to meetup with fellow Singaporeansworking here, or catch upwith what is happening inSingapore through the

media. One thing I try not tomiss is the English PremiereLeague football! We havealso formed a Singapore-Philippines Association –Cebu Chapter with over 30other Singaporeans livinghere.

“I am happy for theopportunity to be here. Theoverseas experience is indeeda special one. There may bea lot of situational challengeswith different sets of rules, but I am confident that thisposting is going to be afruitful one.”

MR JERALD LEEChief Financial Officer,Keppel VerolmeJerald is no stranger tooverseas postings in theKeppel O&M group. He waspreviously posted to ArabHeavy Industries (AHI) in theUAE in December 2001, andsubsequently moved toKeppel Cebu in August2002. its own set of challengeswhich will enrich hisexperience and enable adeeper understanding ofthe businesses.

He shared, “I think it isimportant to keep an openmind and have a positiveattitude so as to be able tounderstand and appreciatethe differences betweencultures. My bosses andcolleagues, both former andcurrent, have been veryhelpful to me. This helps meto settle down into a newcountry quickly.

“The most important lessonI have learnt from myoverseas postings is that weneed to know that ourSingaporean work cultureand practices may not besuitable in all situations andenvironments. The KeppelO&M Core Values have beenintegral in conveying andinternalising the Keppelculture in our overseas SBUs.

“It is important to learn andunderstand the uniquenessof doing business in a foreigncountry. It can be donebest through hands-onexperience. We can sharebest practices and implementthem where applicable inour next posting. The jobrotation also helps us to buildup our network and fostercross-fertilisation of ideas.

“In the Netherlands, myfamily and I have madefriends here and we spendmost of our weekends

exploring the many beautifulnature parks here togetherwith our friends.”

MR TANG YANG NANGFinance/AdministrationManager,Arab Heavy IndustriesTang has been with Keppelfor the past 12 years. Whentold he would be posted toAHI, he accepted his firstoverseas posting with alacrityand in true Can Do! spiritlast July.

Tang said, “There wereseveral major tasks Iundertook immediatelywhen I first took over fromW. K. Wong last year, one ofwhich was the listing of AHIon the Dubai FinancialMarket. We had to holdmany major discussions withthe audit firms and ourpartners in order to make theprocess a smooth andsuccessful one.” AHI waslisted on the Dubai FinancialMarket in December 2006as a Public Joint StockCompany.

“Job rotation provides uswith the opportunity toexperience a differentlifestyle overseas. Our workscope is widened and wegain more exposure. As forthe company, this initiative ofrotating officers around thegroup’s global operations canhelp ensure a pool ofexperienced and well-exposed employees ready tobe deployed when the needarises.

“I am enjoying my stint hereat AHI and have adaptedfairly well to theenvironment. It is importantthat we approach the newsets of challenges withprofessionalism and hardwork. Expectations also haveto be adjusted.”

In addition to these
