World Bicycle Relief mobilizes people through The Power of Bicycles. Since our founding in 2005, we have delivered more than 289,591 bicycles and trained more than 1,000 field mechanics in 18 countries in the developing world. Our innovative model combines philanthropic distributions with social enterprise sales that enable us to achieve greater efficiencies of scale, distribute more bicycles per donor dollar and create deeper impact where we work. We work closely with our partners, supporters and end-users to design and implement sustainable programs, leveraging best practices and local expertise. World Bicycle Relief oversees the philanthropic programs and its wholly owned subsidiary Buffalo Bicycles, Ltd. produces the bicycles that enable individuals to achieve mobility and thrive.

We envision a world where distance is no longer a barrier to independence and livelihood.
The Bicycles for Educational Empowerment Program (BEEP) Kenya was launched in May 2015 to help secondary school students in rural areas living many kilometers from school overcome the distance barrier. In partnership with World Vision Kenya and the Ministry of Education Science and Technology (MoEST), we distributed 3,015 Buffalo Bicycles to deserving students, teachers and community supporters in 23 schools in Siaya, Kakamega and Uasin Gishu counties. In addition, we selected and trained 50 bicycle mechanics according to BEEP project standards. The program was successfully implemented despite challenges expected in the first year.
Our 2016 plan is to increase program coverage by implementing BEEP through new partners in new locations. We look forward to our continued relationship with World Vision to build deeper relationships with existing schools. We also will focus on ensuring the highest-level mechanic support and strengthening the spare parts supply chain to ensure parts are available for schools and the bicycles are maintained.
We would like to thank our valued donors and fundraisers, as well as the World Bicycle Relief and Buffalo Bicycle teams for their dedication and continued support in achieving our desired objectives. We are also grateful to country team members for their significant effort resulting in the successful BEEP Kenya launch. We look forward to an even greater impact in 2016, and in our native Kiswahili language, say “asante sana” for all your efforts.

KENYA » IMPACT REPORT 2015
Kenya OverviewGeography: 581,310 square kilometers
Population: 44 million; 1% orphans
Economy: Agriculture is a major employer; the country traditionally exports tea and coffee and has more recently begun to export fresh flowers to Europe
Poverty: 3 in 10 people live on less than $1/day
Education Need/Impact Literacy rate: 87.4%
Primary school net attendance: Boys: 86% Girls: 88%
Secondary school net attendance: Boys: 44% Girls: 44%
30 million primary school-age children— 17 million girls—are missing from classrooms in sub-Saharan Africa. But there is good news. Keeping girls in school has a multiplier effect: educated women tend to be healthier, earn greater incomes, marry later and have fewer children. Providing Buffalo Bicycles for students, with the majority designated for girls, has shown significantly reduced travel time and improved educational outcomes. To help lift families and communities out of poverty, we need more bicycles in the hands of girls and boys across the world.
Health Need/Impact Life expectancy: 63 years
HIV prevalence: 6.3%
Clean water: 40% (2 in 5) are without access
In the developing world, healthcare workers often travel long distances to visit sick people. Buffalo Bicycles help workers reduce their travel time, reach more patients and spend more time with them. The result is higher quality care and healthier communities.

Hamstone Rides Towards SuccessHamstone, a 16-year-old student in form 3, received a Buffalo Bicycle this year through BEEP Kenya. “This is exciting and really encourages me to undertake my studies,” declared Hamstone, who serves as deputy president in the student council.
He lives far from school with his grandparents, mother and father and two brothers. Hamstone used to leave at 5:30 a.m. to reach school by the 7:20 a.m. start time, arriving late at least two times a week. “The punishment for being tardy is washing the school toilets,” he laments.
With the Buffalo Bicycle, Hamstone arrives at school promptly and gets home early, which gives him time to fetch water for his mother, do his homework and prepare for the next day. “I will simply become a ‘smart boy,’” he quips.
Hamstone shares that mathematics is his favorite subject and he also performs well in the sciences. “With this bicycle support, I can see my dream of being a doctor come true,” he says. Hamstone blesses WBR and says, ”I am very proud of my bicycle.”
