The charitable portion of the International

What is the IFMA Foundation?
Established in 1990, the IFMA Foundation works for the public good to promote educational opportunities for the advancement of facility management, scholarships and research.
The IFMA Foundation is supported by the generosity of the facility management community, including IFMA members, chapters, councils, corporate sponsors and private contributors who are united by the belief that education and research improve the facility management profession.
Brief History and Highlights Founded in 1990, as a 501C3 non profit organization
Founded to promote research and education of the FM
2005, the BOT voted to preclude paid travel or accommodations for BOT members
2006, the BOT drafted its first Balanced Scorecard
September 2007, David Brady, former CEO of IFMA, turned over the responsibility of
the Accredited Degree Program over to the Foundation
February 2008, the award winning FMpedia conceived
May 2008, the ‘Rock The Foundation’ speakers world tour launched
June 2009, the Sustainability How-To-Guides were brought to life
October 2009, the online IJFM and International Student of the Year launched
June 2010, first non-North American Chair appointed
May 2011, first international Executive Committee meeting held at EFMC Vienna
November 2011, Jeff Tafel joined the Foundation as the Executive Director
September 2012, the first ever Workplace Symposium was held at Cornell University –
the award winning Work on the Move book
2012, our Scholarship Program exceed $1 million in scholarships awarded
2012, CHEA application commenced

Mission: Promote and support scholarships,
education and research opportunities for the
advancement of facility management worldwide.
Purpose: To provide greater resources and
educational opportunities to facility management
professionals and foster FM workforce
development by collaborating with higher
education institutions world-wide on FM degree
programs, FM student scholarships and FM
academic research.

For AT&T, there are approx. 1,000 FM professionals (management only).
The approximate numbers of qualified retirements:
~ In 5 years = 350 personnel (35% of workforce)
~ In 10 years = 700 personnel (70% of workforce)

are embedded into the institution’s academic coursework
Accreditation is a voluntary method / process of quality assurance used by universities and institutions designed primarily to distinguish schools adhering to a set of educational standards.

Why Workforce Development and
Accredited Degree Programs?
The FM profession and employers need more higher education
institutions to offering (accredited) degrees in Facility Management
Chapters are encouraged to support FM degree development and

The Foundation’s FM Accredited Degree Program (ADP) ensures
current students, potential employers, parents and prospective
students that the accredited FM degrees meet the rigorous
academic standard for quality, subject content and student outcome
requirements.

Requirements of Accredited Degree Programs
The ADP Standard is currently being updated, reflecting
the results of IFMA’s 2009 Global Job Task Analysis
(GJTA) which defined the 11 core competencies of the
FM profession. Facility managers from 62 countries were
involved in the GJTA, the most comprehensive to date
and the first truly global survey and analysis.
There were 8 Competency areas. Technology made 9
Emergency Preparedness & Business Continuity and
Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability were 10 &
11.

Communication: communication plan and processes for both internal and external stakeholders.
Emergency Preparedness and Business Continuity:
emergency and risk management plans, procedures.
Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability: sustainable management of built and natural environments.
Finance and Business: strategic plans, budgets, financial analyses, procurement
Human Factors: healthful and safe environment, security, employee development.

Leadership and Strategy: strategic planning; organize, staff and lead facility organization
Operations and Maintenance: building operations and maintenance, occupant services.
Project Management: oversight and management of all projects and related contracts

Real Estate and Property Management: real estate planning, acquisition, disposition.
Technology: facility management technology, workplace management systems.

IFMA Foundation Student InitiativesISY: The “International Student of the Year” is the recognition of an
outstanding FM or related degree student. This student must be
sponsored by a person or organization. ISS is this years ISY sponsor
and is offering a USD $2,000 award plus up to USD $2,000 for the
student to attend WW13 in Philadelphia.
ePoster: the ePoster competition is an
Annual event held at World Workplace for
FM and related degree students to present
FM topics. These topics can be FM
projects, internship experiences or papers
presented in FM courses. The winner of the
ePoster receives a Certificate and travel and
expenses up to USD $1,500 paid to either
World Workplace of the Euro FM
Conference event.
