MAKE-A-DIFFERENCE-DAY 2014Saturday, October 25, 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 (rain or shine)

TRAIL BLAZING & REFORESTATION VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Kent County Parks & Recreation is looking for families, individuals, groups, and volunteer organizations to help Kent County observe Make-A-Difference Day at the Hunn Recreation Area on Saturday, October 25. Volunteers are asked to arrive for check-in between 9:00 – 9:30 a.m. The project site and parking area is located at 1624 Sorghum Mill Road, Dover, Delaware 19901. From the north gate of Dover AFB, go West on Rt. 10, turning South (left) on Sorghum Mill Road at Carl King Gas Company. The entrance to the park will be marked with event signs. Make-A-Difference-Day is a National Day of helping others -- a celebration of neighbors helping neighbors. Created by USA WEEKEND Magazine, Make-A-Difference-Day is an annual event that takes place on the fourth Saturday of every October. Volunteers will be helping to extend trails from a parking lot destined to be installed in the near future. This like other trail and reforestation projects will be a most aggressive volunteer project. It will require many volunteers willing to do some hard work. Along with developing a new trail a number of trees will need to be planted. There will be something for all ages and abilities to do such as trail blazing, tree planting and site clean-up (removing discarded household items, trash, and unwanted vegetation). Volunteers will be working under the supervision of “Team Leaders” and Parks Staff.

To pre-register or for more information, call Glenn “Wayne” McCarty at 302-744-2489 or email at [email protected]. Registration is also available the day of the event at the project site. All registered volunteers will receive a certificate of appreciation and possibly other appreciation gifts (sponsors pending and welcome). If you wish to be a “Team Leader” you are

required to register in advance and attend a lunch time on-site “Safety Training” on Friday, October 24, 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Pizza and water will be provided. Please bring leather work gloves, hard-soled, lace-up shoes or boots (NO SNEAKERS, FLIP FLOPS, ETC.), and a round-point shovel and a garden rake (limited tools on-site). Be sure to dress appropriately for outdoor work and the weather. A handicapped accessible portable restroom, hot/cold drinks; a “kick start snack”; and post event hotdog feast will be provided. NEW THIS YEAR: All participants under the age of 18 years must be accompanied by a pre-registered adult, parent, guardian, or volunteer and provide Kent County with a signed liability waiver/release form. Please e-mail, fax (302-760-4757), mail or hand deliver completed and signed waiver/release to Parks and Recreation or bring it the day of the event. It will save a great deal of time at the sign-in table if you pre-register. No person under 18 will be allowed to participate without a signed waiver/release.
