9. SCHOLARLY AND PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES
(a) Areas of interest
My overriding interest is in large-scale (international/global) social and cultural transformation toward
sustainability, its dynamics and determinants. Within this, I primarily focus on the science-policy interface of
international/global environmental problems, especially related to the atmosphere. My regional specialty is East
Asia. I study not only the present but also the past; I am deeply drawn to environmental history. To counterbalance
these broad areas, I am actively involved in campus sustainability at UNBC.

Publications Record
Note on my definition of “refereed/peer-reviewed.” Definitions of what constitutes a refereed or peer-reviewed publication
vary widely. I employ a strict definition in which the work submitted for publication is sent out to independent external
reviewers who are expert in subject matter of the document and who, prior to publication, provide a written critique and
evaluation to which the author(s) must respond. Some of my publications, using a looser definition, could have been included
in the “refereed publications” section below. I have chosen to put them in the “non-refereed publications” section with a
note on how they were ‘peer-reviewed.’

(e) Conference Proceedings
Note: All titles below for AESS and ISA are a combination paper/presentation, unless otherwise noted. Technically,
these organizations consider papers accepted for presentation as peer-reviewed because they must be ‘peer-
accepted’ for the annual convention and because the author(s) receive feedback at presentation time at the
conference. However, this method does not fit my strict definition as stated above. Thus, I have not included them in
Ken Wilkening Page 16 of 18
the “refereed publications” section. Since 2004, all ISA papers are publicly available as online PDF files (see paper
archive at: http://www.isanet.org/archive.html).
