IN THE CASE OF THIS 7,000-SQUARE-FOOT FORT LAUDERDALE,Fla., home created by designer Ken Crawford for his Tennessee client, excitement grewwith each new color, texture and finish. The result — homeowners head-over-heels inlove with their new house.

Crawford designed the home for the young family as a second residence and everyfacet is a departure from the traditional luxury of the their northern home. On a cornerlot facing both the Intracoastal Waterway and a side canal, the three levels of gleaming

white geometry set a new direction for the neighborhood. But one that has HolidayBoat Parade vessels halting in awe to gaze at the luminous structure.

Given carte blanche, Crawford came aboard to design the home with the owners’concept first and foremost in his mind. “My client said it should be contemporary, relaxed and that his favorite color was red,” Crawford says. “After that he was absolutelyfearless.” And yes, it was the husband who became fully engaged in the design process.“We’re both from the South,” the designer says. “We understood each other.”

In perfect complement to the pristine whiteinteriors and linear geometry of the dining area,Philippe Starck’s “Long & Hard” light fixturefrom Capitol Lighting suspends above the sleekItalian setting that looks out onto a manicuredlawn and the Intracoastal Waterway beyond.

Hugging the corner with biaxial water views, the family room proves thatsimplicity contains the ingredients of sheer drama. In pure white, RocheBobois’ leather sofas transform into reclining chaises and back to sculpturallyelegant seating. Stealing a scene from the era of modern classics, a custom red“cup” chair designed by Jai Jalan joins Domus Design’s glass and chromecocktail table atop a plush, retro area rug. Yet, the most dramatic aspect is theever-changing view. To keep it pristine, Crawford designed a nearly structuralconsole from which a television ascends.

With the formal living room jettisoned, an atrial entry takes its place witha message: “Have fun and relax!” A contemporary blue felt and nickel billiardtable bids welcome surrounded by Intracoastal Waterway views that open toa cantilevered stairway and a sleek Italian-influenced dining area to the right. Wrapped in glass, the walnut-clad stairway appears to float in space. Escher-like,it seems to both come and go. A custom sculpture is in the works for the smalldais beneath the risers.

ABOVE: Even the kitchen has managed unrestricted views to the water. With streamlined, white-lacquered cabinetry set back and a stainless steel hood by Wolf elevated, the vista remains openfrom the grilling station on the lanai straight through the breakfast area to the Intracoastal Waterway.

The uniquely blue and walnut-trimmedtable from Mitchell Exclusive Billiardstakes prominence in the entry, whereBrueton’s angular, white leather benchfrom E.G. Cody provides a scenic spotto sit and wait for the next turn at play.

“The owner told me he’s slept in every room ... on the poolside lounges, and even on the plush family room area rug,” designer KennethCrawford says. “And he can say for sure, he ‘loves every inch!’”

The formal dining area, like theother first level spaces, is given auniquely Italian sensibility withmarble flooring polished to a highsheen. An Andrea Lucatello glass-top table dominates surrounded byslim-backed, white leather chairsbase-edged in stainless steel. Shadesof blue mimic the sky and waterwayas the custom glass centerpiece anda shiny stainless steel tower byartist Martin Schreiber pick up allof the reflected hues.

Facing the less active canal, abreakfast area, kitchen and intimatelanai align to form the favoritegathering place for family andfriends. In the kitchen, subtle grayleather counter stools by CattelanItalia sit like quotation marks besideInnovative’s warm wood cabinetrytopped with glistening tiger marble, while the breakfast area serves upboth bounty and fun … a place forboard games and kibitzing withthe cook.

Refusing to be taken all tooseriously, the media room’s massivewalnut door slides fully open toreveal the billiard table’s fun.Stainless steel accents carry intothe space, where Bonaldo’s sleek,squeeze-waisted table sits in perfectcomplement to the sofa’s pumpkin-colored coverings from Romo.Crawford suggested the boldorange viewing sofa for family orfriends to gather in a brotherlyheap as they watch the full-wallscreening of a favorite film.

RIGHT: Leaving hard work behind, one can playat will in the media room. Here, a bold-stripedbolster pillow from Nessen Showroom adds apunch of colorful comfort on the viewing sofa.Beyond the wall of glass, Inside Out’s fiberglassplatform sofa is topped with durable Sunbrellacushions … just perfect for a twilight nap.

LINED WITH WALLS OF LUSH AMERICAN WALNUT, THE MASTER BATH — WITH ITS MIRABELLE SOAKING TUB,

WHITE-LACQUERED VANITIES TOPPED IN MARBLE OF THE WORLD’S CALACATTA GOLD, AND A MEGALITHIC CLOSET AND DRESSING ROOM BEYOND — IS ITSELF A DESTINATION VENUE.

Just upstairs, a glass balustrade keeps the view into the soaring centralatrium unimpeded as it seems to jut outward toward the pool. This floatingcatwalk connects the second floor’s two wings — one given to the guestand children’s rooms, the other to the master suite.

With his eye now educated to contemporary aesthetics, the owner wishedto remain “architectural” even in the master suite. “We chose a stainless andlacquer bed, and wide bedside tables for their elegance and stark simplicity,”the designer says. “The hanging pendants also reflect the minimalistapproach … which in the end gives each piece heightened interest.”

LEFT: On stainless steel tracks, themaster bedroom’s walnut panelsslide closed for privacy and open tothe spa-like master bath or a morningkitchen with everything needed fornighttime refreshments too. Dandy’sdraped chaise lounge from EnsembleCollection and Sklar’s stainless accenttable shape a serene sitting area.

The home’s waterside footprint shifts forward and back, capturing space forbalconies above and terraces below.Brown Jordan chaises recline poolside, while “Nemo,” a curious chair, looks onfrom the gardens. A rooftop terrace holdsa full summer kitchen and space for dining al fresco beneath the stars.

In the master bath, Crawford used every inch to insinuate something luxurious.A freestanding island of polished walnut strips and white lacquered cabinetryholds his-and-her vanities — each with its own built-in television. A ladiesmake-up space sits beside a cube-shaped soaking tub seemingly perched alongthe skyline to take in the view along the waterway. Artist William Braemer’sred-toned paintings, Spring Bouquet 2 in the bath and Lady Rothko above the bedin the master suite, were commissioned especially for these spaces.

Though each of the dozens of glass openings can be closed with electricshades, it is the relationship of the home to its setting which sets it apart. In thishouse, the difference between indoors and out is only a perception. Consideringhimself to live in a home of enchantment where even a sculpture looks as if ithas come to life, it is understandable why from time to time the owner still sendsmessages to his designer saying: “I love my house … thank you. I really, reallylove my house.”
