Welcome to our 13th Annual Production Sale!

We are looking forward to this exciting weekend in Bismarck. It doesn’t seem possible that another bull selection season is here already.

Kenner Simmentals would like to thank all of our past customers. Many of our very fi rst customers are lucky to have their sons and daughters involved with their cattle operations. Producing beef is a challenging but rewarding occupation, but it is extra special when we can do it with our family and friends.

This year has been another volatile year with the fi nancial and commodity markets, but the demand for beef has remained strong and the market has rebounded since the holidays. Most of the upper Midwest has been hit with heavy snowfalls, which has made for a tough winter, but the stock ponds should fi ll up and the pastures should get a great start!

This year seems to be the most powerful set of uniform bulls and heifers ever offered at our production sale. The demand for the SimAngus cattle continues to grow, but we are still putting a major emphasis on the purebreds, as many of our customers still like to make the F1 cross. The bulls will be ultrasounded with the new carcass EPDs provided prior to the sale by request or on our website. Many of the lots have been tested or pedigree verifi ed for the polled gene and coat color.

Every bull and heifer is guaranteed to your satisfaction and we are again offering a $100 discount per bull if you take your bull home on sale day. If you leave them with us, we will take them home and feed them until around April 1 with no charge, but we recommend purchasing insurance on the bulls. Insurance will be available on sale day and can be purchased for 3 months up to a year -- your choice. The bred heifers should be picked up either sale day or shortly after since many will be close to calving. Contact Bryan, Erika or Roger for any special arrangements.

Please join us for a special presentation and social the night before the sale in the Cannonball Room of the Ramkota Hotel. Pizza, hors d’oeuvres, and a full bar will be available. Marty Ropp, Director of Field Services for the American Simmental Association will present an interesting and educational program.

A noon lunch will be provided at Farmer’s Livestock before the sale. Following the sale, we will have a social with desserts, appetizers and drinks at Farmer’s Livestock. This will hopefully accommodate more people who have to travel home soon after the sale. Please stay and join us so we have a chance to visit with you.

HERD HEALTH

All the cattle in the sale have had calfhood vaccinations of Virashield 6, 7-way Somnus, and One Shot. Pre-weaning shots were Bovishield Gold 5, 7-way Somnus, and One Shot. At weaning, they were boosted with Bovishield Gold 5 and Somnus. They were poured in November with Ivermectrin.

The bred heifers were vaccinated with Scour Boss 9 and Type A Clostridia. They were boosted with Scour Boss 4 and Type A Clostridia and poured with Ivermectrin.

The bulls are on a Hubbard bull developer that is hand fed. THey also have free choice grass hay in front of them at all times.

KENNER SIMMENTAL RANCHBull Buyer’s Quick Guide to ASA EPDs and $ Indexes

Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and –5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units). Key to using EPDs is knowing what units they are expressed in. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPDs, A would be expected to sire 15-pounds more weaning weight than B. If calving ease were the trait, A would be expected to sire 15-percent more unassisted births in fi rst-calf heifers; in other words, if B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we’d expect A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. All-Purpose Index (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire scenario. $ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ Indexes come in. Through well-conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ Indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ Indexes:

All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus fi rst-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield.

Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.

Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly fi gure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a $50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed. Ellingson Black Perfector - #19851281998 – 2008Unfortunately, Ellingson Black Perfector passed away in the summer of 2008. Perfector was an amazing bull in that he died when he was 10 years old and had bred cows for two seasons almost all of his years – going back and forth between North Dakota and Alabama to Wells Farm. He sustained an injury over the winter to his shoulder and could not heal enough to breed cows this summer.

Perfector was bred and raised by Terry Ellingson, Ellingson Simmental of ND. We purchased him at the North Dakota State Simmental Sale in 1999. His semen rights were purchased by NBI of Kansas and later sold to Triple H Farms of Louisiana.

Perfector has had a positive impact in the Kenner herd. He is best known for the exceptional females he produced. The udder structure and quality is ideal and the females stay in the herd for many years and produce top-performing progeny each year. They are clean fronted and feminine looking females and work well mated to many different sires. Perfector was unique in that he was a power bull, and did add birth weight, but his calves were so long, that he did not cause calving diffi culty. His calving ease EPD proves this as it was still in the top 25% while his birth weight EPD was in the bottom 95% and he had very high accuracies. He was not a heifer bull, but we never had trouble with him when used on cows. His carcass EPDs have also been strong as he ranks in the top 2% for marbling, top 2% for TI and the top 15% for API.

He was a large framed bull, but his feet and legs were strong through the end. He was a gentle giant and we have not had any problems with his progeny as far as disposition. Even when he got older, his disposition did not change.

Perfector was widely used across the breed and currently has 1000 progeny reported to the American Simmental Association. Just in the last year, he still made the list of top 50 used sires for the year ranking 34. He truly has been a great infl uence to the Simmental breed and will be missed by Kenner Simmental and Wells Farm in the years to come.

KENNER SIMMENTAL RANCHEPD Information

ADJUSTED MEASUREMENTS AND THEIR USE IN THE CATTLE BUSINESSAt the Kenner Ranch we make every effort to provide you with the most accurate, complete and meaningful information possible. All data is derived from actual measurements - no guessing. To provide you with more meaningful information we use adjusted weights for all traits - including birth, weaning, and yearling weights. While many breeders are perfectly happy adding weight to a calf at weaning in compensation for being out of a heifer, they neglect to follow the same protocol at birth. For example, we add eight pounds to the actual birth weight of a calf by a two-year-old Simmental heifer to put it on a level playing fi eld with a mature cow’s calf.

Not only is there an adjustment for birth, weaning, and yearling weights, adjusted scrotal circumferences are standardized to a year of age.

ACTUAL/ADJUSTED BIRTH WEIGHT OR EPDS?Generally, a cow tends to have 7% of her body weight in a calf at birth. For example, a 1500 pound cow would have a 105 pound calf, and a 1000 pound cow would have a 70 pound calf. This is another reason the actual and adjusted birth weights are not as meaningful as EPDs. Unless you know how big the cows are in the particular herd and how much they are fed, it is impossible to know if the birth weight is acceptable for each cow in that herd. But by looking at the calving ease EPD, you will know, compared to the average of the whole breed, if you could expect calving problems.

Even though adjusted measurements are much better than actual measurements for comparing animals, they fall far short of the power of Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs). Although we provide adjusted measurements for people not comfortable with using EPDs, we strongly recommend placing more emphasis on EPDs for any traits that are available. EPDs allow you to sift fact from feed and are the only way to compare animals from different herds. They simply are the most accurate way of evaluating genetic merit, no ifs, ands or buts!

Don’t be confused by too many numbers. The main carcass EPDs to look at are the CW, YG, and MB. The BF and REA are two of the factors used to calculate YG, so you are basically already considering them in the YG EPD.

SIMANGUS EPDSAny half Simmentals and some ¾ Simmentals will not list calving ease or maternal calving ease EPDs because there is no multi-breed evaluation for calving ease, yet. EPDs are calculated by pedigree estimates along with the actual data. To compute the pedigree estimate, the sire and maternal grandsire are key components and if they do not have calving ease or maternal calving ease EPDs, then the progeny cannot either. Some ¾ Simmental progeny do have calving ease EPDs, and that is because the other breed is the maternal granddam and does not affect the calculation.

You may notice that there are a few calves in this offering that are listed as Purebreds and do not have calving ease or maternal calving ease EPDs. They are purebreds, but they are sons of a ¾ Simmental bull who does not have calving ease EPDs, therefore, no EPDs can be confi gured.
