Combining great data and physical selection

• Our stud has been in operation for almost 50 years• We now use a combination of ASBVs, genomic breeding

values, physical appearance, structure and the knowledge gleaned from past errors and successes to inform our current and future breeding decisions to improve the genetics we provide to you

• We then package these genetics in a well conditioned, fertile and low disease risk ram (or ewe) for stud and commercial clients – our sheep are measured to be financially profitable and easy care

Page 3: Kennedy creek sires 2014

Kennedy Creek Stud Objectives• Use worldwide best practice genetic and genomic

technologies (Lambplan/SGA) to make genetic progress towards– Rapid growth rate to weaning without excess adult

bodyweight– Above industry average loin muscle & good overall muscling– Moderate fat level (sale rams between +0.5 to -1.0)– Easy lambing, moderate birthweight, good lambing ease– Easy care, fertile sheep with low disease risk

• With excellent visual appearance, muscle shape, reproductive measurements, mating ability, wool/skin quality & Poll Dorset type

Page 4: Kennedy creek sires 2014

Stud sires• The following slides detail Lambplan figures

from September 2014(www.lambplan.com.au)• All of our sale sires (or when semen is

collected) are:– JD (Johne’s disease) MN3V (vaccinated with Gudair)– Fully vaccinated (6 in 1)– Brucellosis free (blood testing every 2nd year for

over thirty years free), footrot & lice free– Free from exotic disease (as per

www.animalhealthaustralia.gov.au)

Sires of progeny born in 2014• The following pages show stud sires used to join

ewes for lambing in 2014 (Autumn and Spring drops)• Sires used this year are from Kennedy Creek and

Pepperton Poll Dorset studs• Photos of all rams are provided where we have

photos (no trimming of rams in photos – in paddock condition, often immediately following or during joining – we believe these are the most relevant photos to share) following data and comments page on each sire

Page 7: Kennedy creek sires 2014

Progeny measurements• Progeny are lambed down in groups of 50 to 100 ewes

and lambs weighed & e-tagged within 12 hours of birth• All lambs are kept in these groups until weaning when

they are weighed (12 weeks after lambing starts)• Separated into 1 group at weaning until early post

weaning (EPWT) data collected then run as separate male and female flocks ie 2 flocks

• All animals treated alike to maximise ASBV accuracy• Benchmarking sires used to maximise accuracy (six

KCPD sires have been used in the sheep CRC INF 304/8, 44/9, 186/9, 122/10, 38/11, 621/12 & we also have linkage via AI in our stud and our rams used externally

Rams in use for 2012 lambing

• 2 groups of sires:– 1. Proven sires used in previous season on farm (8 rams)– 2. Progeny test sires on farm(3 rams)

TOTAL SIRES USED FOR 2013 lambing = 19 rams

• Lambing divided into autumn and spring lambing (¾ ewes in autumn, ¼ ewes in spring). Approximately 400 ewes joined (including 15 month old hoggets)

Page 10: Kennedy creek sires 2014

Genomic breeding values (GBVs)

• Genomic breeding values on all our rams have been assessed

• This includes all of our progeny test sires and some other young “potentials”

• We are excited to continue to be involved in this to enhance data quality in difficult to measure traits (meat quality such as intramuscular fat, parasite resistance etc)

• These are currently used to avoid the use of “outlier” sires eg. poor eating quality

Note: In most seasons we commence with 6-8 progeny test sires. This number halves by the next year when data on their lambs is available. Each year after that one or more rams in this group are sold to maintain our genetic gain from new progeny test sires and keep a low generation interval (see next page). We retain a low number of older sires for the sake of good quality linkage.

Kennedy Creek 122/10• Sire = Kennedy Creek 304/08• Dam = Kennedy Creek 122/06 (SD = Derrynock

220/04)• Great looking ram with good Dorset wool and

bare points with excellent blend of figures including short gestation

• We regard this ram highly and progeny are excellent with two progeny already used as stud sires in our flock

• LIMITED SEMEN available for 2014 joining

Page 15: Kennedy creek sires 2014
Page 16: Kennedy creek sires 2014

Kennedy Creek 19/11

• Sire = Majardah 157/08• Dam = Kennedy Creek 178/09 (SD = Kennedy

Creek 440/07)• A very solid ram with excellent muscling through

leg• Retained in stud team due to structural

correctness and excellent blend of figures for all markets

Page 17: Kennedy creek sires 2014
Page 18: Kennedy creek sires 2014

Kennedy Creek 64/11

• Sire = Linton 603/08• Dam = Kennedy Creek 81/09 (SD = Ivadene

75/06)• Our best son from Linton 603• Low birth weight sire with increase in ASBVs

after progeny data entry• Plenty of muscle and low WEC – power packed

pedigree

Page 19: Kennedy creek sires 2014
Page 20: Kennedy creek sires 2014

Kennedy Creek 461/11

• Sire = Wyndamah 939/08• Dam = KC 28/09 (SD = Ivadene 75/06)

• Solid balance of ASBVs (PWT >12 & PEMD >1.5) and negative for WEC

• Sire and dam both have very well balanced breeding values and excellent structure

Page 24: Kennedy creek sires 2014

Kennedy Creek 181/12

• Sire = Kennedy Creek 44/11• Dam = KC 17/9 (SD= Ivadene 75/6)

• Highest Cplus ranked ram (208) produced in 2012 on property

• BWT = 0.57, PWT = 15.9, PEMD = 1.8, PFAT = -0.2 (would like more rams with these figures), Trade Index = 113

Page 26: Kennedy creek sires 2014

Kennedy Creek 621/12• AI Sire = Pollambi 284/07• Dam = 108/10 (SD= Kennedy Creek 488/07)• Son of one of the highest L2020 Poll Dorset

sires available with dam from a high growth KCPD line

• Great looking ram and second highest growth of his cohort

• Joined to ewes at 7 months as shown in photo

• We consider this ram may be the best bred on the property

Current sales• We have stud and flock rams for sale year round –

any current sales are listed on the sheepgenetics website, but more rams may be available

• We have a limited number of ewe lambs available in Spring 2013 and will have a good selection of ewe lambs available early in 2014 (over 300 ewe lambs born in 2013 and only keeping best 70-80 in stud)

• We have opted to slightly reduce our ram offering in 2013 with about 130 rams for sale by mid October

• Rams available for viewing for stud purchases
