CCSS–Create narratives or write to develop real or imagined
experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive
details, and clear event sequences. In the text or a portion of the text
Main Focus
Students will learn that an opera is simply another way to
tell a story. They will watch several segments of five
different stories “brought to life” on stage, addressing
several of the newly adopted Common Core State Standards.
Students will create a dramatic performance for an assigned
story line, based upon original narratives accompanied by
music and other elements of opera,such as lighting, props
and design with appropriate costuming.

Please note that all educational program lessons will address standards for English Language Arts & Literacy in History/ Social Studies, Science and Technology-based Subjects. Upon completion of these lessons students will learn how to further develop and enhance habits of the mind and apply them to various aspects of their academic and social lives.
Overall Course/ Program Objective:Students will learn how to use the elements of opera to create an original drama. Students will
learn how to acquire and use 21st century skills such as creativity, imagination, problem solving, media literacy, IT literacy, cross
cultural learning and structure, by exercising key characteristics and habits of the mind, including but not limited to: compare and
contrast, variety of expression, questioning, abstract and concrete thinking, applying prior and newly acquired knowledge, making
predictions, creating new productions, designing, analyzing, word structure, collaborative actions, sequencing and imagery.

V. Warm-ups (10 minutes): Use your prior knowledge and complete the concept of definition web for opera.
CONCEPT OF DEFINITION WEB
Opera
It is like a play, which
the characters sing
their lines.
It may be written in
many different
languages.
It is another way to
tell a story.
It is a story set to
music.
Ex: Madame Butterfly
(Puccini) &Cosi fan

VI. Mini-Lesson (15 min):Have students discuss and write an original drama, and complete the Story Construction diagram.

1. Exposition (BACKGROUND INFO)
One day a school bully decides to pick a fight.
2. Rising Action (PROGRESSING STORYLINE) Teacher breaks up the fight and settles everyone down in the
classroom.
3. Climax (MAXIMUM INTENSITY & SUSPENSE)
Directly followinga power point presentation about the life of Bob Marley, the school bully throws a paper ball, striking another student
in the back of the head.
4. Falling Action (ISSUES ARE BEING RESOLVED)
The teacher breaks up the fight for the final time, and ask a question that strikes up a conversation about the futility of violence and the importance of
peace.
5. Resolution (FINAL DETERMINATION)
Students respond to the question with a inspirationalhip-hop lyrics, music, rhythm, and movement. They speak of the importance of peace; expressing that “violence solves
nothing, but peace is the only way!”

VII. Group Lesson (20 min):Students work in groups and answer the following assessment questions. Prepare to share. a. What makes a story? Something happens – a sequence of events. b. How can we use elements of an opera to create an original story? We can incorporate props and songs to bring our story to life. c. How does the school setting affect the plot? Most children behave differently while in school than when they’re at home. d. What is the morale lesson of the story? Problems can be solved when we stop fighting and work together.

Narrator: One day at recess, as the boys were playing ball, and the girls were practicing a new cheer,a school bully decides to pick a
fight.

___________3. Man you crazy, that was a foul! (Ad lib)
___________4.Just pass me the ball and let the me show you how it’s done! (Ad lib)
___________5.(Bully fouls again) Sucker! (Ad lib)
___________6.Hey stop! That was another foul, what’s wrong with you??? (Ad lib)

Then the boys step in to help break up the fight.)

Mr. Wise 18. Stop it, just stop this fighting, we can address the issue once we’re settled, so quickly come in side and take a seat.

Mr. Wise 19.Now as I was saying, fighting is never the answer, it only causes more chaos. If you want to solve a problem then you
need to….(Wayne tosses a paper ball across the room and hits Penelope in the head). (Ad lib)

___________21. That’s for calling me a bully! (Ad lib)
___________22.Hey man you need to cut that out (Ad lib)
___________23. That bullying stuff is for losers.
___________24.Man shut up. You guys can’t tell me what to do. I’m no bully. I just don’t like people trying to tell me what to do.
___________25.Well picking a fight won’t solve anything, it only makes matters worse. It’s always best to talk things out.
___________26.Yea, in a nice calm, peaceful and respectful way.
___________27. Whatever! I think fighting is cool. Violence makes the world go round.
___________28.Well guys maybe he has a point, maybe being violent isn’t that bad. I’m sure Bob had to fight every now and then.
___________29.Having to fight and picking a fight is two different things, but as you guys could see Bob Marley was against
violence.
___________30.Yea, he wanted us to all get along peacefully.
___________31. I don’t care about none of that, picking fights and being violent make people afraid of me.

Mr. Wise 33.Afraid of you?Seriously?After all that you’ve seen and all that you’ve heard, I can not believe that some of you are still
interested in fighting? Haven’t you learned anything from the lessons about the life of Bob Marley?

13. placing emphasis on why the violence gotta cease;
