WOSU On-The-MoveThough the world continues to be challenged by the pandemic, we are pleased that the future seems to be glimmering more brightly after a year of great isolation, pain and grief. COVID-19 and other issues have led many to seek trusted information, which has meant a remarkable increase in listenership on 89.7 NPR News over the past year. We are pleased that for the first time in history WOSU 89.7 has had several months when it is the radio station most listened to in the Columbus market.

We’ve also seen audience growth on Classical 101, WOSU TV, our online services and have greatly expanded our WOSU Classroom services to help teachers with remote learning technologies. It’s a time when more people than ever have come to WOSU Public Media for programming, news and information, music and special services.

Behind the scenes, our organization is busy transitioning to a new headquarters nearing completion off High Street near the OSU campus at 14th and Pearl Streets. By early May, staff will begin moving from the Fawcett Center, where WOSU has been located since 1971, into the new facility. The staff transition will be done slowly and safely, but we also have to move our radio and television stations. That technology challenge will start in June and our team will be doing their best to make it all happen with minimal disruption to our broadcast signals.

Just know that we are paddling fast under the surface over the next few months as we look forward with great anticipation to energizing a new WOSU community and broadcast space. We want you, our members, to join us for events, performances and tours of our new home when it is safe to do so. We have faith that will be very soon!

Ken Burns’ Hemingway The documentary film "Hemingway" by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick premieres on WOSU TV Monday, April 5 at 8pm. The three-part film tracks the meteoric rise and tragic fall of Ernest Hemingway, one of the greatest and most influential writers America has ever produced. "Hemingway" examines his visionary work and turbulent life, interweaving his biography with excerpts from his iconic short stories, novels and non-fiction to reveal the brilliant, ambitious, charismatic and complicated man behind the myth.

Intimate and insightful beyond Hemingway’s larger-than-life exploits, public bravado and occasional tall-tale, the documentary reveals a deeply troubled and ultimately tragic figure. In his final years, the author suffered from chronic alcoholism, traumatic brain injuries and serious mental illness. His suicide left behind an unparalleled body of artistic work and a complicated emotional legacy for those closest to him.

Narrated by long-time collaborator Peter Coyote, "Hemingway" features an all-star cast of actors bringing Hemingway (voiced

by Jeff Daniels) and his friends and family vividly to life. Through letters to and from his four wives—voiced by Meryl Streep, Keri Russell, Mary-Louise Parker and Patricia Clarkson—the film reveals Hemingway at his

most romantic and his most vulnerable, grappling at times with insecurity, anxiety and existential loneliness.

After four years of remarkably unprecedented politics, there is a new resident of the White House and a new party in charge. But for us in journalism, our role remains the same.

The practices and policies of former President Trump and his administration reawakened aggressive journalism. Reporters stepped up efforts to cultivate sources, uncover documents, fact-check statements and call out falsehoods. One could argue Washington had not seen that level of watchdog journalism since Watergate and the Vietnam War. Journalists served the public extremely well.

It must and will continue.

Reporters and news organizations must cover the Biden administration as aggressively as we covered the Trump White House. We must fact-check the new president’s statements, evaluate progress on his campaign promises and question his motives for policy decisions. If the president or a member of his team makes a false statement, we must call them on it. If an administration official or lawmaker from either party makes an

For the last few years, Classical 101 has had an ongoing project to digitize our classical CD library. These last few months, the exciting move to our new headquarters and the challenges of COVID-19 have prioritized the process. And increased the difficulty.

There are two basic areas of this project: 1) capturing the audio and data from the complete library collection and 2) managing the audio and data used in our automation system. With a massive library collection of about 40,000 CDs, only those individual pieces that are currently in rotation are entered into the automation system. It’s a labor-intensive process.

Pull a CD from the library shelf and create a digital file folder that corresponds to the CD’s shelf number. Rip the contents of the CD into that file folder and save to a network location we call the Digital Shelf. It’s intended to replicate the setup of our physical CD library. Once the audio files and the metadata have been checked

and corrected, it’s notated in the library database that the music on the CD can now be accessed as a digital file.

Sound complicated? It is, kind of! But why is it important? Access, primarily. When pandemic safety protocols meant our hosts were working from home, we were limited by lack of access to the physical CD library. Now, with a larger portion of our library stored digitally, our hosts can access music for production from a shared network drive, even off-site.

More important for the long term, as record labels move away from physical CDs and distribute more of their music digitally, we needed a way to capture and organize those new releases. The library digitization project gives us a way to move into the future while also capturing the resources of our past.

Programming Highlights

Music In Mid Ohio (MiMO) returns in April with host Christopher Purdy. While you’ve been missing live performances, Classical 101 has been your link to local performing groups.

This month, MiMO connects you with the Central Ohio Symphony and the New Albany Symphony, as well as MACCO playing George Walker’s lovely Lyric for Strings. Muskingum College Choir sings Rachmaninoff and Capital University Chapel Choir performs Karl Runestad’s moving Please Stay.

Other April highlights include Urban Strings Columbus playing A Charlie Brown Medley and Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue with violinist Joanna Frankel and pianist Caroline Hong. Enjoy Music In Mid Ohio Sunday afternoons at 1pm.
