Editorial
DEar GuEst,The Hotel Adlon Kempinski in Berlin has, since its reope-
ning in 1997, once more become an iconic landmark for one of
Europe’s most iconic cities. And who better to show you their
city and what they love about it, than those who live there? Berlin
remains a compelling and fascinating destination, a city which
juxtaposes contradictions with charming ease. Read more in our
main feature on page 6.
Our international collection of luxury hotels boasts a selec-
tion of top suites which few others can rival. Take, for example,
the Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi. This jewel of a property is not
only one of the world’s most talked about and awarded hotels,
it houses a conference and exhibition centre which has set new
international standards, and offers several of the world’s most
coveted and spacious suites. Suite Living on page 39 gives you a
tempting glimpse of just a few of these incredible suites.
Kempinski’s collection continues to grow with the addition
of some very select properties. In this issue, we review Kempinski
Hotel Xi’an, which is the perfect base from which to visit one of
the world’s most important cultural sites: Emperor Qin’s Terra-
cotta Army. I remember being spellbound as news of this disco-
very unfolded and a visit is certainly on my list of China’s great
experiences. We also preview two properties which will shortly
open on page 22. The Grand Hotel Kempinski High Tatras, set
in a breathtaking location in Slovakia’s eponymous mountain
range, and Kempinski Hotel Aqaba on the shores of the Red Sea,
which joins the Kempinski Hotel in Amman and the Kempinski
Hotel Ishtar on the Dead Sea as our third property in Jordan. As
a scuba-diving enthusiast, I’m looking forward to rediscovering
the natural beauty and aquatic life in the Red Sea once this pro-
perty opens.
While our collection of luxury properties continues to grow,
we remain focused on one thing – ensuring that you, our guest,
enjoy a memorable and enriching experience of the destination
you select for your stay.
Raum bietet. Lesen sie mehr dazu ab Seite 6.
Unsere internationale Kollektion erlesener Luxushotels bietet
In Suite Living
schon drei Häuser in Jordanien.

lassung Berlin. Wir durften den beiden
Wahl-Berlinern einige Fragen stellen.
KM : Herr Interthal, Hoteldirektoren
Jahreszeiten Kempinski. Trotzdem war
und ist Berlin für mich eine einzigartige
Erfahrung. Diese Stadt verdient als einzige
Stadt in Deutschland den Status einer Me-
tropole und spielt damit eine ernsthafte
Rolle im europäischen Wettbewerb.
KM : Herr Schröder, teilen Sie diese An-
sicht?
SChrÖDer : Zu 100%. Berlin hat die
Welt zu Gast. Hier kommen die verschie-
densten Kulturen zusammen und prägen
das öffentliche Leben. Als Leiter der BMW
Niederlassung Berlin habe ich das große
Glück, vielen Menschen begegenen zu
dürfen. Will man in Berlin erfolgreich sein,
so muss man Teil dieses gesellschaftlichen
Lebens sein.
I n terthal : Wir beide repräsentieren
jeder eine Premium-Marke. Wir laden ein
und werden eingeladen, wir sind Teil des
Berliner Networks und betrachten diese
gesellschaftliche Bühne als ebenso wich-
tigen Arbeitsplatz wie unsere Betriebe.
KM : Herr Interthal, das hört sich nach
wenig Freizeit an. Gibt es für Sie ein pri-
vates Berlin?
I n terthal : Ich bin seit vielen Jahren
leidenschaftlicher Golfer und Jogger. Die
Wege entlang der Spree und durch den
Tiergarten sind wahre Naherholungsge-
biete. Zum Golfen habe ich eine Woh-
nung direkt am Golfplatz Seddiner See.
Berlin hat viel zu bieten. Nicht umsonst
fasziniert diese Stadt Weltstars wie Brad
Pitt und Angelina Jolie. Attraktiv ist auch
das kulturelle Angebot, das durch unseren
regierenden Bürgermeister und Kulturse-
nator Klaus Wowereit einen großen Pro-
tegé hat.
KM : Und in welchem Museum oder
Restaurant trifft man Sie?
I n terthal : Bei der Ticket Bestellung
ist unser Concierge gerne behilflich. Er
ist bestens informiert.
SChrÖDer : Das gastronomische
Angebot reicht von der Currywurst bis
zur Spitzengastronomie.
I n terthal : Wenn es fein und lecker
sein darf, empfehle ich das Restaurant
Horváth am Kreuzberger Kanalufer oder
das MA Tim Raue hier im Adlon-Palais.
KM : Eine Frage noch: was steht nach
unserem Gespräch auf dem Programm?
I n terthal : Die Premierenfeier von
James Bond – Ein Quantum Trost. Daniel
Craig und Olga Kurylenko sind zu Gast
im Hotel Adlon. Nach den Presseterminen
geht es zur Deutschlandpremiere.
SChrÖDer : Wir haben morgen

KM : New York, Milan and Paris are ci-
ties that spring to mind when discussing
fashion. What made you choose Berlin
as the city in which to set up shop?
M IChalSKy : When the time was
right for me to go it alone, it was impor-
tant for me that I succeed as a German
designer. Therefore, there was never a
doubt that I was going to stay in Germa-
ny. Berlin is the country’s only genuine
metropolis with the inspiration neces-
sary for the fashion business. It also af-
fords designers a lot of elbow room.
KM : Is Berlin reflected in your work?
M IChalSKy : Without a doubt – in
every collection. My first collection for
example, was inspired by Anita Berber, a
dancer in the ‘Roaring ‘20s’. The second
by the nightlife here and the third by the
neo economic miracle. The current coll-
ection is more alternative and inspired
by the 25th anniversary of ‘Die Grünen’
political party and the German student
movement of 1968. The upcoming coll-
ection I’m currently working on is also
inspired by our nation’s capital. That’s
all I can reveal I’m afraid …
KM : How would you sum up the fa-
shion scene in Berlin and what is the
significance of the Fashionweek Berlin?
M IChalSKy : Berlin’s fashion scene
has come a long way since the reuni-
fication. The city’s geographical loca-
tion puts it in the heart of Europe and
as such, it really has its finger on the
pulse. As for the Fashionweek Berlin,
it is a major event. It’s a very important
platform for designers to show off their
creative talents and focus attention on
Berlin. It’s no place for conformist coll-
ections so you really get to see some
unique shows.
KM : Any shopping tips for those visi-
ting Berlin?
M IChalSKy : Of course the first stop
has to be Monbijouplatz 4 – my bou-
tique. Once can behold the entire collec-
tion there. The Quartier 206 and the F95
in the Frankfurter Allee are popular as is
14OZ for all those who like jeans.
KM : Berlin is famous for its nightlife.
Where does one go to hit the town?
M IChalSKy : A good evening begins
with a good meal. I like the Grill Royal
and the Borchardt. I can also highly re-
commend Tim Raue’s MA at the Hotel
Adlon Kempinski. Afterwards, a drink
at the Bar Tausend at Schiffbauerdamm
11 is always fun. Those in the mood for
some club-hopping should drop into
Cookies, Weekend or Badlands.
KM : Herr Michalsky, New York, Mai-
land und Tokio sind Städte, die einem
sofort zum Thema Mode einfallen. Wa-
Designer sehe. Berlin ist Deutschlands
einzige Weltstadt mit vielen bunten Sze-
BERL IN 's FAsHIoN sCENEnen, was sehr wichtig für die Modewelt
ist. Designern wird hier viel Platz und
Spielraum geboten.
KM : Spiegelt sich Berlin in Ihrer Mode
wider?
M IChalSKy : Ja, in allen Kollekti-
onen. Die erste Kollektion war inspiriert
von Anita Berber, einer Tänzerin aus
den 20iger Jahren, die zweite vom Ber-
liner Nachtleben und die dritte vom Neo
Wirtschaftswunder. Die aktuelle Kollek-
tion ist alternativer und auf „25 Jahren
Bündnis 90 Die Grünen“ und der 68er
Bewegung begründet. Auch die nächste
Kollektion, an der ich gerade arbeite,
wird natürlich von Berlin inspiriert sein.
Aber mehr kann ich dazu noch nicht
verraten…
KM : Wie beschreiben Sie die Modesze-
ne in Berlin? Welchen Stellenwert hat
die Fashionweek Berlin?
M IChalSKy : Die Fashionweek Ber-
lin hat einen sehr hohen Stellenwert. Es
ist eine wichtige Plattform für Designer,
weil sie die Aufmerksamkeit auf Berlin
lenkt. Es wird keine einheitliche Mode
gezeigt, jede Kollektion ist einzigartig.
Früher, als Deutschland noch geteilt war,
lag Berlin weit ab vom Schuss. Die Mo-
deszene spielte sich woanders ab. Heu-
te, durch ein geeintes Deutschland, liegt
Berlin im Herzen Europas. Eine ideale
geographische Lage.
KM : Welche Shoppingtipps würden Sie
einem Berlinbesucher geben?
M IChalSKy : Natürlich sollten Sie
zuerst meine Boutique am Monbijou-
platz 4 besuchen. Dort kann man die
komplette Kollektion bewundern. Inte-
ressant ist dann noch das Quartier 206
und das F95 in der Frankfurter Allee.
Wenn man Jeans mag, dann sollte man
das 14OZ nicht verpassen.
KM : Zu einem Berlinbesuch gehört
auch das Nachtleben dazu. Wo geht
man hin?
M IChalSKy : Ein guter Abend fängt
mit einem Restaurantbesuch an. Das
Grill Royal und das Borchardt gefal-
len mir. Auch das MA von Tim Raue
im Hotel Adlon Kempinski kann ich
wärmstens empfehlen. Im Anschluss an
Michael Michalsky, Modeschöpfer
das Abendessen lohnt es sich auf einen
Drink in die Bar Tausend am Schiffbau-
erdamm 11 zu gehen. Wer dann noch
Lust auf eine Clubtour hat, sollte im
Cookies, im Badlands oder im Weekend
vorbeischauen.

KM: As director of the Berlin’s largest ope-
ra company, you will be staging Wagner’s
Tannhäuser on the 30th of November this
year. Tell us about the production and
what you’ve got in store for it.
harMS: I see Wagner’s Tannhäuser as a
revealing look at human nature and some
of its driving passions such as love, art
and desire. We experience artists battling
against inner conflicts, external obstacles
and the search for love in all its facets.
Tannhäuser’s desire has many faces: I
see Venus and Elisabeth as two sides of
a complex figure – the lover on one side,
the beloved on the other. For this reason,
one performer sings both parts in my
production. From the duality comes a
single unity.
KM: What draws you to Berlin?
harMS: Berlin has incredible cultural
infrastructure and a large, open-minded
public. There’s something on offer to suit
everyone’s tastes. I really like the fact that
the various scenes mutually inspire and
stimulate one and other. The ‘establish-
ment’ could learn a lot from the flexibility
of the ‘free scene’. The free scene bene-
fits from the openness of the so-called
‘Leuchttürme’. The form and scope is
unique to Berlin. It isn’t possible in Paris,
London or in New York.
KM: What associations do you make
with the image campaign ‘Sei Berlin’ (Be
Berlin)?
harMS: I was very impressed by the re-
cent Festival of Lights™ activities. I be-
lieve the campaign can do some good for
Berlin.
KM: How would you describe the art
scene in Berlin?
harMS: Incredibly diverse, vital and
political. Unfortunately, Berlin is missing
the influential upper middle class that one
finds in other cities. They could make the
city more down to earth sometimes.
KM: What museum(s) should visitors to
Berlin have on their sightseeing list?
harMS: Museum Island of course. The
new Bode Museum. Not to be missed:
the National Gallery and the Hamburger
Bahnhof. Then there’s all the impressive
smaller museums: the Berggruen Collec-
tion springs to mind, as does the Bröhan
Museum and the enchanting Bruecke-
Museum.
KM: Berlin is famous for its theatre and
cabaret. How might an evening schedule
for a Berlin visitor appear?
harMS: 6.30pm: Bücherbogen am Savi-
gnyplatz (amazing amount of theatre and
opera literature on offer)
7.30pm: German Opera Berlin (approx.
286 performances and events each year)
10.30pm: Grill Royal (enjoys a reputation
soMEtHINg FoR EvERyoNE for the city’s best steak)
12 midnight: Bar Jeder Vernunft (mid-
night program)
ten. Seine Sehnsucht hat viele Gesichter:
Venus und Elisabeth sind für mich zwei
Seiten einer komplexen Figur – die Ge-
liebte auf der einen, die Angebetete auf
der anderen Seite. Deshalb singt in mei-
ner Inszenierung eine Sängerin beide Par-
tien.
Was macht die Stadt so le-
benswert?
harMS: Berlin bietet unglaublich viel
Kultur und ein grosses, sehr offenes
Publikum. Für die unterschiedlichsten
Geschmäcker wird etwas geboten. Das
Gute ist, dass sich diese unterschied-
lichen Szenen gegenseitig inspirieren
und befruchten. Die großen Institutionen
können etwas von der Flexibilitaet der
Freien Szene lernen. Die Freie Szene pro-
fitiert von der Offenheit der sogenannten
Leuchttürme. In dieser Form ist das sonst
nirgendwo möglich. Auch nicht in Paris,
London oder New York.
KM: Was verbinden Sie mit der Image-
kampagne „Sei Berlin“?
harMS: Das zur Zeit stattfindende Licht-
Festival finde ich sehr beeindruckend. Ich
glaube schon, dass die Kampagne etwas
für Berlin bewirken kann.
KM: Wie beschreiben Sie die Kunstsze-
ne in Berlin?
harMS: Unglaublich vielfältig, vital, poli-
tisch. Leider fehlt hier ein breit aufgestell-
ter Mittelstand, den es in anderen Städ-
ten gibt. Das würde der Stadt manchmal
mehr Bodenhaftung geben.
KM: Welches Museum sollte man in
Berlin unbedingt einmal besucht haben?
harMS: Natürlich die Museumsinsel.
Das neue Bodemuseum. Sehr wichtig:
die Nationalgalerie und der Hamburger
Bahnhof. Aber auch die vielen kleineren
Museen sind beeindruckend: da fällt mir
die Sammlung Berggruen ein, das Bröhan
Museum und das zauberhafte Bruecke-
Museum.
KM: Berlin ist bekannt für seine Thea-
ter – und Kleinkunstbühnen. Wie könnte
ein kulturelles Abendprogramm für einen
Berlinbesucher aussehen?
harMS: 18.30 Uhr: Bücherbogen am
Savignyplatz (atemberaubende Auswahl
an Theater- und Opernliteratur)
19.30 Uhr: Deutsche Oper Berlin (ca. 286
Vorstellung und Veranstaltungen im Jahr)
22.30 Uhr: Grill Royal (das derzeit beste
Steak)
24.00 Uhr: Bar jeder Vernunft (Mitter-
nachtsprogramm)
03.00 Uhr: Berghain (geht nur freitags
oder samstags)

FACE TO FACE
Kempinski Magazine: It wasn’t long ago, you were just a kid
with a violin, showing up all over town, asking to get up on stage
with artists. Seems to have worked out. You’ve played with
P-Funk, Jackson Browne, Don Was, Herbie Hancock, Rolling
Stones, countless bands.
Lili Haydn: That was me (laughs). My mom (Lotus Weinstock)
was partly to blame for that kind of audacity. If I wanted to play
with somebody, she’d tell me to do exactly that: Go to the show
and let them know I was there. I think I probably took it further
than she even imagined.
KM: You did some film work as an actress when you were a
child. You grew up in a commune. When did music become
a big part of your life?
Haydn: My mom was a singer-songwriter, and she really didn’t
listen to music other than her own. She supported us with a
publishing deal, and she was always at the piano. Music was just
the thing that was always happening in my childhood. When I
was seven years old, I had a dream I could play the violin. My
mom rented me a violin and wrote me a song that very day so I
could play open strings and actually make some music. It usually
takes a couple of years to make more than noise with a violin, but
my mom helped me get there.
KM: When did music become a more formal pursuit for you?
Haydn: I think I finally saw the cause and effect of music –
if you practice hard, you might actually be good – at chamber
music camp at Idyllwild School of the Arts. I was 12 or 13
years old. They had a piano trio there, and they’d put on
these concerts twice a week. I’d sit in the front row and just
sob whenever they got to the second movement. They’d then
give assignments and, for me, it worked how it should work:
I wanted to play as well as they could. I actually wanted
to work hard. Like most musicians, you hear someone
play something you love and you want to learn how to do it.
That’s what it was for me.
KM: You spent a lot of years as a quote-unquote sideman,
playing with these extraordinary musicians. How did you make
the transition to solo artist?
Haydn: It got to the point where I was playing the same solo
in everybody’s songs. I was hearing these melodies and I just
kept shoving them into whatever song I was asked to play
by whatever band. My boyfriend at the time pointed it out.
He said, “It sounds like you need to write your own music.”
So I started doing that and appreciating that discipline. I was
playing every night with someone. I was at these clubs so often
that some of the clubs started asking if I’d like my own gig. It
grew very organically. In order to fill those clubs, I’d jam with
a band people had heard of and hand out flyers for my solo
show there. Then I started getting a scene happening. Celebrities
started showing up. Then I started to understand how to put
together a good show, and developed that. And then all these
labels started showing up.
KM: What did representation mean to your career?
Haydn: Early on, I hooked up with a manager, Herb Cohen, who
had managed George Duke and Frank Zappa and Tom Waits,
and he said, “Don’t let anyone hear demos. Make them see you
live.” I got signed off the shows. I wasn’t writing pop songs. I was
writing pieces, from my classical roots. I didn’t know the rules,
and I know I don’t want to. I like putting my own elements
together. Atlantic wanted me to make records for them, so I did.
KM: How did it work for you, being on a label and trans forming
into a full-fledged solo artist?
Haydn: I went through a cycle, maybe ten years, of trying to
follow the rules. I was trying to learn craft, trying to do well.
My first record, for Atlantic, was pretty unhinged. They
tried to rein me. Even as I resisted it, I tried to be a good girl,
obedient. After a gig with Herbie Hancock a few years ago,
I had a real breakdown. It was like I don’t fit in anywhere.
I’m playing with all these jazz guys, but I’m not a jazz player.
In any world that would host me – rock, jazz, pop – I never
fit in. In that spirit, I became unhinged again. I think this
new album, Place Between Places, comes from that. It feels
authentic to me, like what I was doing 15 years ago and I’m still
at the beginning of my journey.
KM: The last year has been good for you – new label deal, TV
exposure, some high profile gigs. Tell me about the business side
of this, how it all comes together.
Haydn: The star player on my team is Mitch Schneider at
MSOPR. I’ve always been a pretty do-it-yourself person, but
today’s music environment requires some help I think. A label
is like an Internet server in a lot of ways. You’re making music
because you have something to say, so how much do you want
it to be heard? Make the best you can, play with everyone you
can, show up to everything that might be good, and be ready. Be
ready. And be graceful.
KM: Tell me about some of the other gigs that have happened
recently – Dodgers Stadium, “The Tonight Show”.
Haydn: The Dodgers gig came from doing
a benefit a few months ago with a woman
who knew Frank McCourt, the owner of the
Dodgers. She really liked me and talked to me
after the show and she asked me to do it for
the Dodgers. I’d been trying to get on “The
Tonight Show” for 12 years. The groundwork
had been laid, but when Mitch Schneider
stepped in it happened. It’s always a conflu-
ence of events and circumstances.
KM: Any other advice you’d like to offer up
and coming musicians?
Haydn: In the spirit of grass roots and being
supportive of each other, if somebody likes
my music and really feels it, spread the word,
please. I do it all the time. It’s what we have
to do – spread the word for each other. That’s
how change happens.

Was, Herbie Hancock, Rolling Stones und vielen weiteren Bands
gespielt.
mune aufgewachsen. Wann genau bekam Musik in Ihrem Leben
dabei wirklich geholfen.
Camp an der Idyllwild School of the Arts.
sagte: „Du musst deine eigene Musik schreiben.“ Das habe
ich dann auch gemacht und schätzen gelernt. Damals trat
Es ging also
ganz langsam.
Damals begriff
ich, was eine gute Show ausmacht, und entwickelte mich
weiter.
KM: Was bedeuten Ihnen Live-Auftritte?
Mein neues Album, Place Between Places, greift dieses Ge-
TV-Auftritte, sogar hochrangige Gigs. Sind Sie eine Geschäfts-
frau?
Man
KM: Was empfehlen Sie anderen aufstrebenden Musikern?

In China the New Year is celebrated twice. Western
New Year’s Eve takes place on 31 December. The
New Year then starts on 1 January. Chinese New
Year‘s Eve, however, is celebrated on the night of
the first new moon between 21 January and 20
February. New Year’s Eve is probably the most
important family celebration throughout China.
Preparing for the event for weeks is supposed to
ensure the family’s prosperity and well-being for
the coming year. The Kitchen God is bribed with
an abundance of sweet dishes and cakes because
he reports people’s good and bad acts to the Jade
Emperor. By sweeping the house with bamboo
branches evil spirits are supposed to be chased
away. At nightfall on the night of New Year’s
Eve, the whole family goes for a walk together.
This is meant to draw bad memories from the
houses. The traditional fireworks were invented
in China. They were not meant to spread beauty
and happiness but to chase away the monster
Nien. Since the monster was afraid of noise, fire
and the colour red, the fireworks were used to
scare it away.

WINING & DINING | HAPPY NEW YEAR 2009
Jiaozi – raVioli | According to a popular myth, the ravioli are
formed like shoe-shaped gold or silver bars, which used to be the means
of payment of the higher social classes. By eating ravioli on New Year’s
Eve you ask for wealth and an upturn in the New Year. Some Chinese
people also compare the Jiaozi to the soul: simple on the outside, varied
within. Like many things in China, preparing Jiaozi is a family
affair. Together the dough is kneaded, rolled out and filled. The ravioli
themselves are normally made of flour. The filling is usually made of
meat and vegetables, but peanuts, sweets and dates may also be used.
This symbolizes a long life, happiness and good health. According to the
tradition, the ravioli should be eaten at exactly 12 o’clock midnight on
New Year’s Eve to celebrate the family gathering and to wish happiness
and good luck for the future.
New Year’s Eve didn’t
really use to be celebrated
in India, as the majority of
the population are Hindus.
Only 2% are of Christian
belief. Since the 1990s
however, celebrating New
Year’s Eve is becoming
increasingly popular. The
wealthy middle classes
are drawn to the Western
ways of life and it is
fashionable to have a party on New Year’s
Eve. However, there aren’t really any New
Year’s Eve traditions as of yet. There may be
fireworks, but shortly after midnight the
spectacle is over. Celebrating New Year’s Eve
is a symbol for India’s boom, the opening of
the country towards the Western world and
the adoption of its customs.

In Russia, December 31 is the most important holiday; it has even more significance than Christmas,
which is celebrated after New Year’s Eve. Due to the many different time zones, New Year’s Eve
can be celebrated in Russia 11 times. It is important to put up the pine tree, the “Jolka”, on the day
of New Year’s Eve. People cook together, decorate the tree and prepare for this important evening.
On New Year’s Eve everyone is congratulated and receives presents. Only children get presents
for Christmas, which is celebrated on January 7. Children traditionally dress up on New Year’s
Eve. In the evening, you must be careful when you go outside. Homemade fireworks, so-called
“bombotschki” (little bombs) are fired off. In Russia, melted wax is poured, which then sets into
figures – a tradition very similar to the one of dropping molten lead into water. The future is then
interpreted according to the shadows of the figures. Caviar is of exceptional importance in
Russian cuisine. On New Year’s Eve it is mostly eaten in combination with Vodka.
The very mild Beluga Caviar is the most precious kind of caviar. It is harvested
from the European Beluga sturgeon and measures 3.5 mm in diameter and
the light to dark grey coloured eggs are covered with a thin skin.
getroffen. An Silvester bekommen alle Glückwünsche und Geschenke. An Weihnachten, das am

Today’s meaning of the word originated in 1582 when, according to the Georgian reform of the calendar, the end of the year was moved to the day Pope Silvester I. died (December 31, 335).
Silvester stammt vom lat.

While the official history of swarovski begins with Daniel swarovski setting up a cutting
and polishing factory in austria, the real story begins one generation before in Bohemia.
The region was a world leader in glass and crystal production and Daniel’s father was a
highly respected and sought-after crystal cutter. inspired by his father’s skill and dedication
to perfection, Daniel entered the family business and completed his apprenticeship by the
age of 21.
Generation zuvor in Böhmen.

len Elektrizitätsausstellung in Wien
Neben
der Mode- und Kristallwarenindustrie spielt Swarovski auch
in vielen anderen Bereichen eine große Rolle, Designar-
chitektur und -beleuchtung, Verzierungen, Präzisionsoptik,
Schmuck, Industriewerkzeug und Reflektionstechnologie
miteingeschlossen.
Did you know?· Dorothy’s shoes in the Wizard of Oz were covered in crystals supplied by
Swarovski.
· The crystals encrusting the dress worn by Marilyn Monroe when she sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to JFK were too.
· The Tyrolit division responsible for abrasive cutting tools was spawned by equipment shortages during WWI.
· The star that tops the Rockefeller Centre Christmas tree in New York was created by Swarovski. It is 9 foot in diameter and weighs 550 pounds!
· The famous swan logo synonymous with Swarovski was introduced in 1988. For almost a cen-tury before that, the logo had been the edelweiss flower.
A major turning point in his life occurred in 1883 while visi-
ting the International Electrical Exhibition in Vienna. It was
here that he met Thomas Edison – considered one of history’s
most brilliant inventors. The potential of electricity fascina-
ted Daniel and he set about designing a machine that could
aid the labour-intensive cutting and polishing process. Nine
years of trial and error later, Daniel Swarovski was satisfied
with his design and a patent was granted. The machine not
only drastically reduced the amount of physical effort re-
quired, it also perfected the cutting itself. The invention was
a genuine breakthrough and it heralded in a new age for mul-
tifaceted gems and crystal products.
Armed with the electric cutting and polishing machine, Dani-
el moved to the town of Wattens in the alps of Austrian Tyrol.
He and his partners had been searching for a new location to
set up a factory and Wattens proved perfect. Not only was it
ideally located near strategically important trade routes to the
major fashion markets in Italy and France, but the abundant
water supply was just what they needed to start producing
hydroelectricity.
Daniel‘s sons Wilhelm, Fredrich and Alfred joined the com-
pany and in 1908 they began the experiments that ultimately
led to the creation of the company’s highly prized optically
flawless glass crystal.
The business remains a family af-
fair with the 4th and 5th generation
Swarovskis overseeing an interatio-
nal company that employs some 22,000
people. Aside from the fashion and cry-
stal ware industries, Swarovski is a major
player in many other fields including
designer architecture and lighting,
ornament production, precision
optics, jewellery, industrial tooling
and reflection technology.

Emirates Palace Abu Dhabi – Feeling a million bucks
Staying in luxury hotels is always an enjoyable experience to say the least. The exclusive ambience, the attentive service and the comprehensive facilities to name but a few of the reasons. Be that as it may, those who regularly stay in 5 star hotels are seldom given cause to raise their heads from the proverbial lap of luxury and take a good look around. The Emi-rates Palace is different. One doesn’t even have to enter the hotel to know they’ve arrived somewhere special. The towering arches of Ara-bian architecture, the kilometre long private promenade overlooking the sparkling waters of the Gulf – it truly is magnificent. Once inside its cool palatial walls, the affect is even more dazzling – dare we say ‘humbling’. What people considered the lap of luxury suddenly feels like a bony knee in comparison. One thing is certain – this place is more than just another first class hotel!
The old saying ‘last but not least’ just doesn’t quite fit the bill when introducing the Emirates Palace as the setting for the SUITE LIVING section of this, the last issue of the Kempinski Magazine for 2008. Our editor in chief, Susanne Barth, told the team what she wanted and they didn’t disappoint. Directed by Albert Wasl and shot by sought-after Munich photographer Gary Engel, this SUITE LIVING features models wearing sensational outfits and beautiful accesso-ries chosen by the enVogue agency in Dubai. We hope the images inspire our readers to visit Abu Dhabi soon, or bring back fond memo-ries for those who’ve already enjoyed the privilege.
Emirates Palace Abu Dhabi – Feeling a million bucks

not hesitate to open the palace doors for
this issue of SUITE LIVING.
This is a special place as you can see

The final touches are being put on the script for the new filming of the James Bond classic: GOLDFINGER.Just kidding. While many will argue that Sean Connery is a genuine one of a kind and the benchmark by which all others are measured, the same can be said of the Emirates Palace. If they ever do decide to re-shoot it and are looking for a set location with an abundance of gold, we know which hotel will be at the top of their list …

‘Sauna’ is an ancient Finnish word referring to the
traditional bathhouse. The sauna itself traces its
roots back to pits dug in slopes in which ancient
Finns would ward off the winter with heated rocks
and steam. Many parts of Europe such as Finland,
Estonia and Latvia recognized the healthy proper-
ties of saunas and integrated them into their culture
thousands of years ago. So how does it actually work?
One important fact many people new to saunas don’t
know is that sauna is a process. Be it a one-off visit or
a month-long therapy, simply entering the room and
putting up with the heat for as long as possible is not
only wrong, but can prove dangerous. Sauna requires
cycles of both hot and cold in a predetermined order
to evoke change. This means the preparation before
entering the sauna, the type of sauna, the duration
spent within and the activity afterwards all play a role
in therapeutic affectivity. Most saunas include a guide
sign with recommendations on how to get the most
from the experience. Those wanting to use the sauna
for medicinal purposes should consult an expert.
Regular usage has been shown to aid adaptation,
reduce stress hormones, lower blood pressure and
improve cardiovascular conditions. Additionally, it
can reduce the incidence of the common cold and
temporarily relieve the symptoms. It has been shown to
In vielen Teilen Europas
griert.
in vorher festgelegter Abfolge.

tHe WorLd‘S LargeSt WeLLneSS areaAround a quarter of a century ago, the German division of US oil company TEXACO drilled some rather
deep holes in the ground in their search for black gold. They didn’t strike oil, but the bores in Erding around
35 kilometres north east of Munich did strike something valuable: water. Lots of warm, sulphur-rich
water. Originating at a depth of almost 2.5 kilometres beneath the earth‘s surface, the therapeutic waters
of the sulphur spring are still an alluring factor of what has become Europe’s largest spa facility. Under
the visionary guidance of Josef Wund and son Jörg, extensive developments begun in the late 1990s have
resulted in four main theme areas: the Therme Paradise with its various natural springs and water-related
facilities, the Vitality Oasis which includes three therapeutic mineral pools, the GALAXY entertainment facility
with no less than 16 water slides and the largest spa landscape of its kind anywhere in the world, the Sauna
Paradise. Anyone who thinks a sauna is simply a hot wooden room designed to make those within perspire is in
for a big surprise when entering the Sauna Paradise. The theme area has over 20 different types of sauna –
each with its own therapeutic advantages.

lighting effects.
What is the actual idea behind this
design?
The “Swarovski Bathroom made by
Kludi” and its two room versions,
Passion and Delight, are the result of an
intense collaboration between Kludi and
Swarovski. Instead of simply furnishing
a room with functional elements and
merely applying crystals to the fittings,
the two partners have taken the idea
of crystal to its logical conclusion – and
applied the principle behind its design to
the entire architecture of the bathroom.
What is the use and function of this
project?
We selected the model “Passion” in or
der to comply with the developer’s ideas.
The large windows reaching down to
the floor make it possible to enjoy the
view of the park from the steam area
and the seemingly floating bathtub. The
WC and bidet are separated by glass
elements. The elegant lower cupboard
underneath the double sink area makes
for a large storage space.
Was waren die Voraussetzungen des
Ortes und die Wünsche der Bau-
herrschaft?
Der Bauherr wollte seiner Frau das
schönste Bad der Welt schenken, das
Swarovski Bathroom. Der Naturstein
des Swarovski Bathroom, die Kontraste
zwischen Hell und Dunkel und die vie
len Lichteffekte haben ihm besonders
gefallen.
Welche Idee steckt hinter dem Ent-
wurf?
Der „Swarovski Bathroom made by
Kludi“ in den beiden Raummodellen
Passion (engl. für Leidenschaft) und
Delight (engl. für Freude) ist das Er
gebnis einer intensiven Zusammenar
beit zwischen Kludi und Swarovski.
Statt einfach einen Raum mit funktionalen
Elementen auszustatten und lediglich
Kristalle auf Armaturen zu applizieren,
haben die Partner die Idee des Kristalls
konsequent zu Ende gedacht – und sein
Entwurfsprinzip auf die gesamte Archi
tektur des Bade zimmers übertragen.
Welche Nutzung und Funktionen
findet man in diesem Projekt?
Um den Wünschen des Bauherrn zu
entsprechen, wurde die Badvariante
„Passion“ gewählt. Damit man den
schönen Ausblick vom Dampfbereich
und der scheinbar freischwebenden
Badewanne in die Parkanlage genießen
kann, wurde eine bodentiefe Fenster
anlage eingebaut. Der WC und Bidet
Bereich ist durch Glaselemente ge
trennt. Viel Stauraum wurde durch den
eleganten Unterschrank am Doppel
waschtisch erzielt.
“The Swarovski Bathroom is unrivalled within global comprehensive manufacturing of luxury bathrooms – each one is unique. It is ideal for people who value style and design.”Peer-Dominik Schmitz, Head of the Competence Center Swarovski Bathroom

Home of tHe
Located in the central North-Western region, Xi’an is the
Eastern terminus of the Silk Road and home to some 8 million
people. It is also home to the world famous Qin Dynasty Ter-
racotta Army. Qin Shi Huang was the first Emperor of China
and reigned over a unified nation from 247 BC to 221 BC. Upon
his death in 210 BC, he was buried with funerary art unrivalled
throughout recorded history.
In 1974, farmers drilling a water well to the east of Mount Li
began unearthing artefacts and Chinese archaeologists were
quickly called in to investigate. Buried for millennia, the faces
that began to appear caused a world-wide sensation. Today,
over three decades later, the exact scope of the mausoleum
complex is still being determined. In 2007 for example, Chinese
archaeologists using state-of-the-art sonar equipment located a
30 metre high pyramid buried above the main portion of the
tomb. Current estimates put the original Terracotta Army at
over 8,000 soldiers, 130 chariots with 520 horses and 150 caval-
ry horses – the majority of which are still buried in the pits.
According to the historian Sima Qian who lived around a cen-
tury after the First Emperor died, the construction of the mau-
soleum began in 246 BC and involved some 700,000 workers
– although the magnitude of this figure has been disputed by
various historians since. According to Qian, the site included
palaces, scenic towers, officials, valuable utensils and ‘wonder-
ful objects’. To date, the Emperor’s tomb remains unopened and
will remain so till a safe method of excavation and preservati-
on can be devised. Magnetic scans carried out in 2005 indicate
ArmyTerracoTTaXI’AN
a ‘remarkable amount of coins’ prompting much speculation
about the purpose of the chamber and the scope of the treasure
contained within.
Over two thousand years is a long time but many of the ter-
racotta figures have survived practically unscathed. Remaining
paint pigments indicate that the entire army was once bright-
ly coloured and very ornate. Experimental pits dug around the
tomb have also revealed life-sized dancers, musicians, and acro-
bats moulded in mid-performance, a sharp contrast to the for-
midable military poses of their famous terracotta counterparts.
An unearthed horse-driven chariot is the world’s largest bronze
ware discovery. Scientists have narrowed the creation of the
figures down to a component-style production process which
included eight facial moulds and the application of terracotta
drainage pipe manufacture methods to create arms and legs.
Additional clay was added to create individual facial characters
and expressions. Each workshop was required to mark the com-
ponents they produced for quality control purposes. These mar-
kings have made it possible for modern historians to determine
that many of the workshops commandeered to contribute were
normally responsible for mundane items such as roof tiles.
The mausoleum has been called the ‘Eighth Wonder of the World’
and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. The
Kempinski Hotel Xi’an is the ideal starting point for discerning
travellers wanting to experience this unforgettable testament to
China’s incredible history. Transfers to the museum and tours

So entdeckten chinesische Archäologen 2007
Bronzefigur.

Watches that are too traditional no longer fit into the zeitgeist. People want characteristical objects with a high interior and exterior quality. Manufacturers have understood this message and are reacting with a variety previously unheard of: The watches are more daring as far as their dimensions and shapes are concerned and the materials may also be used within space travel or laboratories. The language of design is retro and revival; new interpretations of classics are extremely popular. Precious stones are also much sought-after, especially combined with fashionable red gold. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a woman or a man actually wearing the watch. The main thing is that the watch is always precise: Clients will accept a maximum deviation of just 15 seconds a week. Kim-Eva Wempe (owner of Gerhard D. Wempe KG)

Parmigiani’s CEO, Jean-Marc Jacot, presents Sarah Wiener with her award.
“PROVIDING THE GENERAL PUBLIC HAS NEVER BEEN MY GOAL.” M. PARMIGIANI
„WIR WOLLEN kEINEN MASSENMARkT BEDIENEN.“ M. PARMIGIANI
Born in 1950 in Couvet, Switzerland, Michel Parmigiani grew up
amidst a world of craftsmanship, where the intelligence of skilled
hands was immortalised by their creations. From an early age,
Parmigiani’s enthusiasm for the art of watchmaking has been coupled
to an incredible sense of freedom. Almost 12 years ago, the Sandoz
Family Foundation recognised this enthusiasm and their mutual
appreciation for quality watch manufacturing led to the creation of
what is now Parmigiani Fleurier SA. Their backing of the watch-
making company founded in 1975 made it possible for Parmigiani
to concentrate on expressing his passion. Parmigiani Fleurier is a
unique competence centre that now includes its own independent
manufacturing and finishing divisions capable of creating every watch
component. With an eye continually on the future, the company’s
extremely high quality standards are ensured by the latest in manu-
facturing techniques while the bounds of their creativity continually
probe the boundaries of the technologically possible.
Schon seit früher Kindheit lebt Michel Parmigiani, geboren 1950 in
Leidenschaft konkrete Gestalt annehmen: Aus ihrer gemeinsamen

Parmigiani celebrates Quincy Jones’ 75th birthday!
The 42nd Montreux Jazz Festival celebrated an exceptional artist,
trumpeter, composer and producer: Quincy Jones. In its capacity as one
of the event’s main sponsors, Parmigiani presented the living legend with
a very special gift: a rose gold Kalpagraph engraved with the words,
‘Happy Birthday Quincy’.
Flying dreams
Over the castles and gardens of the Loire, over the alps or
the rooftops of St. Petersburg, the exclusive watchmaker
celebrates one of flight’s purest forms: hot air ballooning.
The argonauts of the air truly are a spectacle
for the senses.

+++ As the icicles of winter begin to thaw in the Northern hemisphere, we’re off to a number of Kempinski hotels to see how they‘re ‘springing’ into 2009 +++ Those who’ll be utilizing the time of year to get some spring cleaning done will know that few items manage to collect dust quite like lamps. We’ll be shedding some light on some illumination furnishing that might convince you to simply throw your old lamp away +++ As new life bursts forth, bees go about their busi-ness and the world fills with colour once more, we humbly tip our hats to Mo-ther Nature. Don’t miss our upcoming look at the hottest headwear +++ What country borders Italy, the Adriatic Sea, Croatia, Hungary and Austria? The next SUITE LIVING special is taking place in the Kempinski Palace Portorož in Slove-nia – so get ready to see some seasonal fashion and suites fit for royalty +++
