Greetings Kemp Mill Families,

Message from Dr. James

April is already here! I would like to take this opportunity to thank the parents and guardians for the

overwhelming support during the Celebration of Student Growth and Achievement and Data Talk. We all

know that there are still room for improvement. That is why I would like to encourage parents and guardians

to continue supporting your child to use Front Row, and Reflex Math at home during the evening and

weekend. We are looking forward to a productive and safe Spring Break.

¡Abril yá está aquí! Me gustaría aprovechar esta oportunidad para agradecer a los padres/tutores

por el apoyo abrumador de la Celebración del Crecimiento y Rendimiento de los Estudiantes y la

plática de datos. Todos sabemos que todavía hay mucho campo para mejorar. Por eso me gustaría

animar a los padres y tutores a continuar apoyando a sus hijos para usar “Front Row” y “Reflex

Math” en casa durante la noche y el fin de semana. Les deseamos unas productivas y seguras

vacaciones de primavera.

WHAT WILL STUDENTS 3rd

In math we finished up with

fractions and we are going back to

reviewing multiplication and

division. We are solving for the

unknown. We will play games and

do word problems to help us with

our critical thinking. We will also

be moving to looking at word

problems for all operations

(addition, subtraction,

multiplication and division)

In reading we finished up working

on predictions and confirming /

changing our predictions. We will

now be working on asking

questions and finding answers in

the text. We will also be reading

folk tales and comparing characters

and themes from stories written by

Eric Kimmel.

In social studies we will be learning

about budgets and will be creating

our own budgets!

In writing we are creating a realistic

fiction picture books. We are

typing them on the chrome book

and drawing our own

illustrations. They will be coming

home soon!

This month in Grade 5, students will be learning how to multiply

and divide decimals in math. In science, they will learn about

plant & animal cells. In reading and writing, students will read,

analyze, and create informational poetry. In health, we will

discuss disease prevention and control. Don’t forget to mark your

calendars for June 15 for our fifth grade promotion.

Happy April!!! We hope you enjoy Spring break and the nice weather that is sure to come. In Math

students will be adding two digit numbers, studying 2-D/3-D shapes, and will learn how to tell

time. In Reading, we will focus on identifying words and phrases that help readers understand how

a character is feeling. We will also compare and contrast text and learn how to determine the cen-

tral message in a story. In Writing, we will do a little bit of everything. We will write narrative, in-

formative, and opinion pieces. In Science, we will study what humans can do to protect the envi-

ronment. In Social Studies, we will learn more about natural and human made features as well as

goods and services in our communities. We hope you have a great month!

In Reading, students will continue to read literary texts and poetry. Students will be able to ask and

answer questions related to characters, setting, plot, vocabulary, how words and phrases help to sup-

ply rhythm and meaning, central message/ moral, and how images help to clarify

their understanding of the text.

In Writing, students will be writing different types of poetry about a topic, and provide details using

images and descriptive words (adjectives, sensory words, thoughts and feelings).

In Math, students will be adding and subtracting 3-digit numbers within 1000; using strategies

for composing and decomposing a ten and a hundred.

In Science, the students will continue to discuss the basic needs of plants and animals, plant

and animal lifecycles, as well as conducting moon observations over time.

In Social Studies, students will discuss the contributions of school, community, and government

leaders, democratic beliefs and attitudes represented by the contributions of people recognized by

holidays, and will learn information about the past from informational texts and biographies, includ-

ing American leaders, innovators, and heroes.

Art

Fourth grade observed a print by Pop Artist Claes Oldenburg

called Two Cheeseburgers with Everything. We discussed shape,

color, form, texture and emphasis. Students then sculpted food

out of clay. Glaze was applied to add color to the sculpture.

3er En matemáticas terminamos con

fracciones y estamos repasando

nuevamente la multiplicación y la

división. Estamos resolviendo lo

desconocido. Vamos a jugar y hacer

problemas de palabras para

ayudarnos con nuestro pensamiento

crítico. También miraremos

problemas de palabras para todas las

operaciones (adición, sustracción,

multiplicación y división)

En lectura terminamos trabajando en

Ahora estaremos trabajando en hacer

Este mes, los estudiantes del 5to grado aprenderán a multiplicar

y dividir decimales en matemáticas. En ciencia, aprenderán

acerca de las células vegetales y animales. En lectura y escritura,

los estudiantes leerán, analizarán y crearán poesía informativa.

En salud, discutiremos la prevención y el control de

enfermedades. No se olviden de marcar el 15 de Junio en sus

calendarios la promoción del quinto grado.

¡Feliz Abril! Esperamos que disfrute sus vacaciones de primavera y el buen tiempo que está

seguro de venir. En Matemáticas los estudiantes agregarán números de dos dígitos, estu-

diando formas 2-D/3-D, y aprenderán cómo decir la hora. En Lectura, nos enfocaremos en

identificar palabras y frases que ayuden a los lectores a entender cómo se siente un perso-

naje. También compararemos y contrastaremos el texto y aprenderemos cómo determinar

el mensaje central en un cuento. En Escritura, haremos un poco de todo. Escribiremos ar-

tículos narrativos, informativos y de opinión. En Ciencia, estudiaremos lo que los humanos

pueden hacer para proteger el medio ambiente. En Estudios Sociales, aprenderemos más

sobre características naturales y humanas, así como sobre bienes y servicios en nuestras

comunidades. ¡Esperamos que tenga un gran mes!

En lectura, los estudiantes seguirán leyendo textos literarios y de poesía. Ellos podrán pre-

guntar y responder a preguntas relacionadas con los personajes, la configuración, el trama,

el vocabulario, cómo las palabras y frases ayudan a suministrar el ritmo y el significado,

El cuarto grado observó una impresión del artista Pop Claes Ol-

denburg llamado Two Cheeseburgers with Everything (Dos

hamburguesas con Todo). Hablamos sobre la forma, color, textu-

ra y énfasis. Los estudiantes luego esculpieron comida de barro.

PTA

The PTA is extremely excited that so many Kemp Mill families came out for our Soups, Sweets & Silent Auction Event in March. We all had a blast enjoying

dinner together and seeing the kids’ happy faces when they had the winning bid on a basket.

Mark your calendars…..April 4th at 6:30pm Dr. David Drowos will help parents with the 4 Cs of Parenting: Caring, Consequences, Communication & Com-

pliance. We could all use help sometimes to understand our children’s motivations behind their behavior!

Are you ready for a party? On May 2nd, the PTA is hosting Cake and Community. Let’s take some time to slow down and chat with each other. After that,

we’re already looking ahead at the next school year and we’re going to discuss volunteer opportunities. If you’ve had questions about our school, think about

giving some time to PTA next year. PTA is a great way to be “on the ground” at your child’s school, communicate with administration and teachers, and help

your child thrive. See you at school at 6:30pm.

Dear Families,

On March 3rd Kemp Mill hosted our annual Cuddle Up and Read Event. Once again we had a great turn out of families. I loved seeing so many teachers, par-

ents and students engaged in reading together. I hope that this practice of reading together continues each and every night in your home. Book in Bag, Front

Row and books sent home from the KM media center as well as resources from our local library can be used to support this important process of continued

reading. Talking and writing in response to what was read are also very beneficial to your child’s or children’s success.

To help foster reading at home I’m including several links I believe you will find helpful. The first one is on the importance of reading widely and the others

are on prompts, questions and strategies you can use to get your child talking and thinking about his or her reading.

El PTA está muy orgulloso de que muchas familias de Kemp Mill vinieron a nuestro evento de sopas, dulces y subastas silenciosas en Marzo. Todos gozamos dis-

frutando una cena juntos y viendo las caras felices de los niños cuando ganaron una canasta.

Marque sus calendarios .. el 4 de Abril a las 6:30pm, Dr. David Drowos ayudará a los padres con las 4 C’s de Parenting: Caring, Consequences, Communica-

tion & Compliance. Todos podríamos usar ayuda a veces para entender las motivaciones de nuestros hijos con su comportamiento!

¿Estás listo para una fiesta? El 2 de Mayo, el PTA está auspiciando Cake and Community. Tomemos un tiempo de calma y charlar con los demás. Después de

Queridas Familias,

El 3 de Marzo, Kemp Mill organizó nuestro evento anual Cuddle Up and Read. Tuvimos una vez más una gran intervención de familias. Me encantó ver tantos

maestros, padres y estudiantes juntos envueltos en la lectura. Espero que esta práctica de leer juntos continúe cada noche en su hogar. Book in Bag, Front

Row y libros enviados a casa de la biblioteca de KM, así como los recursos de nuestra biblioteca local se pueden utilizar para apoyar este importante proceso

de lectura continua. Hablar y escribir respuestas a lo que se leyó también son muy beneficiosos para el éxito de sus hijos. Para ayudar a fomentar la lectura

en casa, incluyo varios enlaces que considero útiles. El primero es sobre la importancia de leer ampliamente y los otros son guías, preguntas y estrategias
