• Use a your school's gradebook program to develop a report for a real or hypothetical class of ten or more students who are assessed on five or more assignments. Submit a printout of your gradebook and the detailed report card (progress report) for an individual student. Example of Student Report Card

The computer would not allow me to print out the grade book or report card so I provided a screen capture of both. (2) Assessment: Teachers must regularly assess student progress. Many textbook publishers make test construction easier by providing test generators, software which allows the teacher to quickly compose tests and keys from question databases. Test generators allow the teacher to input questions, and often provide databases of questions the teacher can select from. *TPE-tip A well-structured exam may be used as an artifact for TPE3, Interpretation and Use of Assessments.

• Use a test generator to construct an exam composed of questions you have selected from existing question banks.

• Software such as Examview allows teachers to develop tests and post them on the

Internet. Take this short physics quiz generated with the Examview, or this geology quiz made with Quizmaker. Include a screen capture of your score (actual score is inconsequential) and discuss the benefits and problems associated with online testing.

Online quizzes are great because they provide the students with instant feedback. As a teacher you are always running the risk of whether your students are taking themselves or not. It is much easier to cheat this way, and with students wider knowledge of computers they can find ways to cheat. I would use Internet testing as an informal assessment for students to receive instant feedback, but I would not use it as a means of determining their grade. (3) Communication: Students benefit when teachers clearly state their expectations in written form. When these expectations are available on the Internet, all students and parents can benefit, particularly students who have been absent. A variety of commercial resources exist with which teachers can post calendars, homework assignments, and other important documents.

• Put your class assignments on the web at Yourhomework , SchoolNotes or similar service. Include a screen capture of your published assignment schedule.

(4) Presentations: Presentation software provides teachers the opportunity to display text and graphics in a slide show fashion. PowerPoint and Keynote are two of the most popular presentation tools. Teachers and professors make extensive use of presentations, but many are concerned about the potentially negative effects such presentations can have on instruction. *TPE-tip A well developed educational presentation can serve as an artifact for TPE 4, Making Content Accessible, or TPE 10, Instructional Time, if used with presenter tools.

• After reading the articles on the educational use and abuse of presentation software, summarize how presentations should be constructed and delivered to maximize learning and minimize abuse.

• Locate and download one or more PowerPoint presentations relevant to your teaching needs. Include the URL of the location from which you obtained them and summarize the PowerPoint and where in your curriculum you will use it.

• Make a PowerPoint presentation to teach a lesson in your subject area, keeping in mind the principles you have outlined above and the guidelines provided (see tutorial). Your presentation should include numerous graphics and be at least 10 slides in length. (a) Provide an electronic copy of your presentation (ppt format) on your website. (b) Embed screen captures of your presentation in the template. Make sure the content is easy to read.

• Using iPhoto (Mac), Picasa (Windows), or similar slide viewer software, create a

photo library for your discipline. You should include photos you have taken plus ones retrieved from a graphic search engine. Create two or three slide shows from the library. Include a screen shot of the slide sorter window for one of your shows. Create a photopage for your website.

The use and abuse of PowerPoint in Teaching and Learning Allan Jones The first article was an essay written about the ways that a PowerPoint presentation can be used appropriately and ways they is not. Some ways to ensure an effective PowerPoint is to make sure it is written in a large font size, and there are limited words on a slide. PowerPoint presentations can be useful because they stimulate different learning styles, especially the auditory or visual learners. They provide multimedia objects at your fingertips. A presentation could be used to have a question/answer session or to guide students through navigating a website. A nice feature is they have the capability to print out handouts so students to not have to copy the whole slide down. When it comes to technology you always have the risk of a presentation not working, or having damage to your thumb drive. A teacher should always have a backup CD, or a print out of the presentation in case this could occur.

Technology does not improve teaching Sue Davis / Guest Columnist October 22, 2004

In the second article the student expresses their concerns and negative uses of PowerPoint presentation. Some of the concerns were students look at slides and do not listen, students wait for students to copy everything down, all the info is from the book just copy and pasted. This allows for no intellectual thinking to occur when students only concern is copying the information, many are too complex, and have excessive content. There is no interaction with students, or even ask student questions, it is impersonal, and gives students no feelings of caring from the teacher.

Two examples of PowerPoint presentations that can be used in the class I searched in Google and under the advanced option you can search specifically for PowerPoint presentations. http://static.hcrhs.k12.nj.us/gems/bezsylko/TeamHandballPPReview.ppt This PowerPoint is a quiz about the rules and history of Team Handball. This would be great to include after you finished teaching the rules and history. It would provide students with feedback about their knowledge of the game. You can make teams and give a prize to the winning team. It is great because it is an interactive way to include students. http://www.aahperd.org/naspe/physicalbest/ppt/FGRAM60%20Philosophy.PPT This PowerPoint presentation is great because it discusses information that students will need to know about the Fitnessgram. Students’ understanding the Fitnessgram is important because they need to know the new requirements they must meet or they will have to take Physical Education until they are seniors. This PowerPoint goes into the specifics of each health-related fitness component they will be tested on and how. It also shows the requirements for each test. This can be shown in the spring semester for students to understand the test better before they take it. My PowerPoint I developed is a Jeopardy game that can be used to help students interact with one another and the teacher.

(5) Other resources: Complete three of the following, using content related to your curriculum whenever possible.

• Use Timeliner to create a timeline relevant to the curriculum you teach. • Develop an educational digital video. • Construct a professional resume using Word. • Develop a concept map with graphics and text. • Create a crossword puzzle or other puzzle relevant to your class. • Create and conduct an on-line survey form for one of your classes. • (a) Find the lowest cost of a specific piece of equipment (projector, computer,

digital camera, etc.) for your classroom, (b) identify the next national conference for your discipline, AND (c) determine the best airfare to attend the conference.
