Kelly Moore 2D/3D Lau, Moore/Lau-Moore

America is described as a “melting pot” but how true is this? A “melting pot” insinuates a thoroughly mixed concoction, a fondue of savory spice, but it is obvious how America is less like a melting pot and more like a thick, chunky stew. Every flavor is distinct just as how different race is often differentiated. Each race treats other races differently. Some stick out more than others, but sometimes you get a bite that just tastes like the broth of the stew. I consider this bite to be the multiracial individuals in America. As a biracial woman, I think there is potential for America to be a true melting pot. Multiracial individuals are the physical culminations of cultures coming together harmoniously.

As a Caucasian-Asian, I experience the privilege/discrimination of being white but also the privilege/discrimination of being Asian (as the “model minority”). But my main concern is acceptance. I am often seen as the “white cousin” or the “Chinese cousin”. What I want is to just be a part of my family without any racial distinction/discrimination.

In my art, I meld Chinese culture with “south of the Mason-Dixon line” culture. This mixture creates something strange yet beautiful. My art is a celebration of culture. This celebration allows me to insert myself within it. As I claim these cultures as my own, I turn to specific moments in my childhood such as playing and eating at my grandparents’ homes. Food is an important component in any culture and is what I look forward to when visiting both sets of grandparents. Kitchens and dining rooms are the places where familial acceptance and togetherness takes place. Language and distance are barriers that hamper emotional attachments. The physical act of cooking for someone and taking the time to dine with her is proof of love and acceptance in the family.

As an artist, I am also a part of two different worlds of art making: as a ceramicist and as a painter. I push these two worlds into one by considering my paintings as sculptural objects and my ceramics as painterly objects. I use ink and acrylic paint, bringing together Eastern and Western mediums.Paste and tape bind pages from my sketchbook to the surface of my paintings. These pages allow me to physically insert myself into the history of painting and the Chinese and Southern cultures. In my ceramics, I use china paint, a Western oil paint-like glaze, to create Chinese inspired designs. The sculptural forms I use are furniture, specifically Chinese folding screens and ceramic garden stools, which are often used as decorative pieces in Western homes (see Oriental Trading Post’s website for example). These garden stools are typical furniture seen in Asian families’ homes as well. The table and dish ware in my installation are from my immediate family’s home. The table was my great grandmother’s dining table from my father’s side and the dish ware comes from my immediate family’s kitchen cabinets. In this installation I am surrounding the table with six garden stools. Each garden stool is painted with a Chinese zodiac sign that represents a member of my immediate family. The painted screens show the kitchen and dining areas of my mother’s family’s home and my father’s family’s home surrounding the scene like an embrace. The two worlds of my mother’s family and my father’s family are brought together and create the reality in which I exist.

Lau, Moore/Lau-Moore encompasses my love for my family, culture, history and heritage.
