NOZZLE DESIGN & SELECTION

Nozzle Efficiencies-What to Look For

Nozzle design and selection is similar to picking an automobile. The buyer's choices are endless, but the buyer mustmake certain decisions: what style, performance characteristics, etc. Every car will move the buyer from Point A to PointB, just as every nozzle will clean sewer lines in some fashion. The question remains, "in what style and at what price"does the buyer wish to travel or clean. The "nozzle-educated" buyer must choose between different types of nozzles todetermine first cost, performance characteristics, and life cycle costs that fit the budget and match the scope of the jobbeing undertaken. KEG is ready to assist the buyer in making these decisions.

Tier One, Tier Two, and Tier Three Nozzles

The National Association of Sewer Service Companies (NASSCO) divides sewer cleaning nozzles into three categories(see NASSCO Jetting Code of Practice or visit NASSCO's website on-line at www.nassco.org). Each category has itsdesign and performance characteristics. KEG's 2009 Product Catalog utilizes the NASSCO* designations to assist ourcustomers in making informed buying decisions.

Tier One— Nozzles or cleaning tools that have a drilled orifice for creating pressure and have a flat inner surfacefor receiving and /or redirecting water flow to the orifices are Tier One. The flat inner surface is notefficient from a fluid mechanics perspective. Tier One nozzles are the least expensive to purchase, butalso provide lesser performance than the other strata of nozzles. A buyer of Tier One nozzles would bedriven by first cost, not product performance or longevity.

Tier Two— Nozzles or cleaning tools that have a replaceable threaded insert or a more rounded inner surface for water redirection are Tier Two. Tier Two nozzles provide a longer service life due to thereplaceable threaded inserts provided, and often have better fluid mechanics than Tier One. A buyer ofTier Two nozzles would be driven by greater concern for performance and longer service life of theequipment.

Tier Three– Nozzles that have a replaceable threaded insert and a more rounded, higher efficiency inner surface for water redirection are Tier Three. A buyer of Tier Three nozzles would be driven by totalowning costs (performance, durability) rather than first cost.

NOZZLE PERFORMANCE AND USAGE

Variables of Nozzle Performance

In selecting a cleaning tool for a specific job, and to operate the tool on a specific jetter or sewer combination truck, the operator must know the variables of flow (GPM), pressure (PSI), hose size (diameter in inches), and hose length(feet), and type of hose - thermoplastic or rubber. All of these variables interact to affect the performance of a sewercleaning tool. Improper use and alignment of these variables will not allow the tool to perform correctly or will adverse-ly affect the operator's ability to accomplish his/her job. KEG has developed in-house proprietary software to assist ourcustomers in configuring their equipment for optimum cleaning performance. Contact your KEG Territory Manager formore information on these important nozzle configuration issues.

Flow Rate Versus Pressure

Flow (measured in GPM) is a vital component of the cleaning process. Generally, lower flows as generatedby a pump are used to clean smaller diameter pipes, and flow in GPM typically increases as the diameter ofpipe increases. Conversely, pressures generated by the tool (measured in PSI) are usually higher whencleaning smaller diameter pipes, and pressure in PSI usually decreases as the diameter of the pipe increases.The table following shows general rules-of-thumb for flow and pressure combinations, and minimum andmaximum flows per hose size*.

DIAMETER PRESSURE MIN.FLOW MAX.FLOW

.50” Hose 4,000 PSI >12 GPM <=25 GPM

.75” Hose 3,000 PSI >20 GPM <=60 GPM

1.0” Hose 3,000 PSI >30 GPM <=80 GPM

1.25” Hose 2,000 PSI >80 GPM <=125 GPM

1.50” Hose 2,000 PSI >60 GPM <=180 GPM

Length & Type of Hose

A final word on configuration includes careful selection of hose. Plastic or rubber hose will have different weights per foot and friction coefficients. As the table above suggests, hose of a certain diameter has a finite range of efficient operation. Failure to follow these guidelines may result in significant pressure losses at the nozzle or cleaning tool. KEG can assist you and train your operators in the correct selection of tools for your particular equipment configurations.

* These flow and pressure ranges are recommendations only, not absolutes.

KEG Announces New Kit & Package Offerings

As we continually teach our customers, pipe cleaning and rehabilitation is a process. Different tools arerequired to do different jobs. KEG’s latest product offerings are designed to give our customers more o p t i o n sw h e n d e t e r m i n i n g t h e t o o l s n e e d e d f o r their pipe maintenance projects.

Kit Nomenclature – What the Model Numbers Mean

Kits are defined as a grouping of nozzles by application that gives the operator a selection of nozzle groupings. To make things easier for our customers, our new Kit offerings will have some “logic” built into the model numbers. All kits will be defined with the following elements:

KIT + DIAMETER + NOZZLES

It should be noted also that the standard hose and fittings diameter designationsof 16 = 1”, 12 = ¾”, and 8 = ½” are also used. Also, our “offering” refers tothe nozzles included and is defined as follows:

BASC = Basic kit of three (1/2”) or four (3/4” and 1”)

STRM = Storm kit of five (1”)

SANI = Sanitary kit of five (3/4”, 1”)

COMP = Complete kit of six (1”)

PLMB = Plumbers kit of four (1/2”)

GRSE – Grease removal kit of five (1/2”)

CLEN – Cleaning kit of six (1/2”)

PENT – Penetrating kit of six (1/2”)

Kits and packages are available with titanium ceramic inserts only.

FLOOR CLEANER FAMILY

KEG-Patented Fluid Mechanics Design “Jets” Away Debris

KEG’s 5 to 14 jet floor cleaners, utilizing KEG’s patented fluid mechanics, provide trulysuperior cleaning efficiency in large diameter pipes. Superior to other bottom nozzles inboth fluid mechanics and jet angle design, our floor cleaners put the pump’s power on thefloor of larger diameter pipes - where the debris is! KEG floor cleaners “jet” away yourtoughest clogs in storm and large sanitary lines.

Superior Design Equals Superior Performance

Due to optimum fluid mechanics, the flow from the high pressure water hose is converted tomaximum cleaning power from each jet. The resulting flow from the various jets (aided bymultiple angles of incidence for the jets) makes these floor cleaners ideal for removingsludge, mud, and other compacted materials and heavy debris (rocks, bricks, broken concrete,etc.) from storm lines, detention systems, culverts, and large sanitary lines. KEG’s uniqueroll cage (see the 8 jet pictured at right) design also ensures that our floor jet cleaner willreturn to its upright position to perform as designed. KEG’s Floor Cleaners feature ourpatented fluid mechanics and are Tier Three nozzles.

KEG’s goal is to provide the absolute best sewer cleaning equipment for ourcustomers. The KLEEN-VUE SYSTEM offers our customers the unparalleledability to clean a sewer or storm line and record and watch the process as it happens.This one-of-a-kind patented product provides the operator immediate visual feedbackon pipe conditions as they are cleaned, saving time, water, and fuel. Utilizing theKleen-Vue System, contractors or municipalities will be able to clean more footage,provide documentation as needed, and maximize the effectiveness of traditionalcamera and video systems.

Wireless Technology Equals Superior Results

Because the camera system is totally wireless, the KEG KLEEN-VUE unit can clean sewer lines, video inspect them,and provide a video and audio recording for documentation, ALL AT THE SAME TIME! Two cameras are factoryinstalled in the base of the unit providing forward and rear views of the unit as it cleans the line. The third component isthe video receiver, mounted at the man-hole to receive the images and forward these signals up to the monitor at theoperator’s station. The recording system then makes video records of the cleaning process.

FINISHING NOZZLE FAMILY

KEG’s Rotor Nozzle Provides the Finishing Touch

When contractors or municipalities "finish" a pipe cleaning job, they often view "streaks" on the pipe walls duringtheir video inspection. These "streaks" are actually grease residue that has not been removed by the other cleaningprocesses. KEG offers our Rotor Nozzle for this purpose. The free spinning Rotor will remove those last greasedeposits, along with tender roots and other vegetation, to "ensure perfect pipe cleaning and a finished job", hence ourfinishing label.

Rotor Nozzles - A 360° Maintenance Tool

Rotor nozzles run the gamut of pipe size applications, ranging from 1/4" to 1 1/4" hose threads, and from 4" to 18"pipe. The unique nozzle insert configuration provides both propulsion and a rotating body action. This rotationensures that pipes are thoroughly cleaned in all 360° of the pipe surface. Though primarily intended for greaseremoval, the Rotor Nozzle is equally adept at removing scaling, crusts, and small root tendrils and other tender vegetation. Maintenance simply requires removal of the top cap and cleaning of the rotational shaft; this can be done ina matter of minutes. No bearings to oil or lubricate and no repair kits to install! Remember, the Rotor Nozzle should bethe last nozzle up the pipe before TV inspection! KEG's Rotor Nozzles are available with steel or titanium ceramicinserts. Our Rotors are classified as Tier Two nozzles.

ROTOR NOZZLESTo Ensure Perfect Pipe Cleaning Before Inspection

KEG’s Rotor Nozzles are an excellent tool for complete pipe cleaning. It should be noted,however, that a Rotor is NOT a cleaning nozzle and should not be used in cleaning applica-tions. Rotors are intended to remove the grease and sludge that remain in lines after an 80percent cleaning has been accomplished. These lines are the adhesive for the next clog tobegin. KEG Rotor Nozzles are made with our unique water driven design and require noform of lubrication for maintenance and operation. KEG Rotor Nozzles are Tier Two nozzles.

CHAIN CUTTER FAMILY

KEG Root Cutters For Roots and Scaling Removal

KEG offers four models for customers with root infiltration or grease and scaling problems. Beginning with the MicroChain Cutter in 2" to 4" applications, Mini Chain Cutter in 4" to 8" applications, the Super Cutter Plus 150 for 6" to 24"pipes, and finally the Super Cutter Plus 200 for pipes 8" to 48", KEG's family of chain cutters has the flexibility to han-dle most heavy obstruction removal.

Superior Performance and Flexibility of Application

KEG's chain cutters are made of stainless steel and offer superior thrust and drive efficiency. Stabilized by stainlesssteel guide carriage skids, the cutters feature a unique spinner nozzle design that rotates the main shaft, spinning theattached chains at 2,500 RPM. The cross cutter bit installed on the front of the shaft also serves as a penetrating bit to"bore" into the root or obstruction. Chains can be configured for grease or scale removal, or for root removal.

Ease of Configuration

The ease of field configuration is a definite plus for the operator. Installation of replacement chain, or skid configurationfor larger diameters, is a simple matter and is quickly done in the field. Standard maintenance and cleaning is easy andprolongs the service life of the cutter. KEG Chain Cutters also feature a 2 year limited warranty and come configuredwith titanium ceramic inserts for better performance. Finally, no lubrication (other than the HP Swivel joint at the hoseconnection) is required to operate a KEG Chain Cutter.

Always clean and video before operating any chain cutter. Also, follow operating guidelines in KEG chain cutter manual.
