Keepsake Quilters Guild SCRAPS FROM THE KQ GUILD PRESIDENT SUE PLAGGE Greetings all! As I write this message I can’t help but think of where I was a week ago. I was soaking up the sun somewhere in Mexico, and now I am back to reality! But I shouldn’t complain because we know it could always be worse, and March will be here soon. I hope you have been working on your President’s challenge project. April will be here before you know it. It’s been fun seeing the finished projects that have been shown so far. I guess I had better get going on mine! Can you tell I’m a procrastinator? Another thing we all need to be thinking about is our quilt show. We have always had a fantastic showing of quilts from our members. Be thinking about what quilts you would like to share at our next quilt show. Don’t be a procrastinator like me, start now! I feel like a broken record, but we are still in need of a program chair elect. If you haven’t held an office for a while or if you have never held an office, please consider filling this position. If everyone takes her turn, it makes our organization stronger. “Tips, Tricks and Techniques from the President” • Polyester batting can be pretty wrinkled when it is taken out of the bag. To get the wrinkles out, put it in the dryer with a couple dryer balls or clean tennis balls. Put it on the lowest heat setting for four or five minutes. It will come out smooth and soft. I imagine this would work for any type of batting. • Leftover batting can be put together using a hemstitch. You can hardly tell it’s been pieced 2019 – 2020 PRESIDENT’S CHALLENGE You must use some of the colors on the page you tore out of the magazine. You do not need to use all of the colors on the page and you can add other colors. What you make is totally up to you. It could be a bag, a quilt, a table runner or topper, or a wall hanging. Be creative and have fun. Just a reminder that we will share them at our April meeting. Golden Needle & Golden Thimble We will be nominating those people who we feel deserve these awards. Golden Thimble Award is given for service above and beyond the average. Kayjoinedtheguildin2011afterherretirement.ShehasservedontheProgramCommittee(chairandmember)andwasNewsletter-ElectandChairaswellastheQuiltShowchair.Shelovescomingtoguildandsharingherloveofquiltingwithothersandadmiringthediversityofartistictalentandskillofthemembers.Sheenjoyslearningnewtechniquesandispleasedtohavefoundahomewiththeguild.
Kayandherhusband,Neal,havebeenmarriedfor51years.Theyhavetwochildrenandninegrandchildren(ages23-14).KaygrewupinMarylandandisanonlychild,butwassurroundedbylotsofgrandparents,great-grandparents,aunts,unclesandcousins.Hermotherpassedherloveofsewingdowntoher.Shelovedtosewandmadealotofherclothesespeciallydresses,suitsanddollclothes.Hermotherdidn’tquilt,butlovedquiltsandcollectedquiltsandunfinishedprojectsfromherGrandmother.Kaynowhasthose.Kay’sonlyregretisthatshenevergottoshareherquiltswithhermotherbeforeshedied.Shedoes,however,sharetheloveofquiltingwithherdaughter.
Kaybegansewinginearnestintheseventies,makingherchildrenandhusbandclothesfromdoubleknitfabric.Sheevendabbledinlingerieandbathingsuitsforatime.However,eventuallyhernursingcareerandchildrearingtookuptoomuchtime.Shemadeherfirstofficialquiltin2000ataretreattaughtbychurchfriends.Next,attheurgingofherdaughterwhenthethirdgrandchildwasborn,shebeganmakingbabyquilts,andthenbunksizequiltsforeachgrandchild.Kaylovesbatikfabricand“modern”stylequiltsthemost.Shehastwomorebunksizequiltstomakeforgrandchildrenandallkindsofkitsareinherstashwaitingforherattention.
