June 2014 Keeping things in balance, and other odds and ends. By Dave Johnson I’ve been flying R/C gliders since 1975 which probably means I don’t have a real life, but it doesn’t mean I pretend to know everything there is to know about R/C gliders. Quite the contrary, I’m certain that given the many branches that the evolutionary tree of soaring has taken, that what I know today represents a much smaller percentage of the total scope of soaring compared with what I knew 30 plus years ago. But by keeping my eyes, ears and mind open for new ideas to borrow, steal, or sometimes discover on my own, I keep finding new ideas to keep the hobby fresh and interesting and, perhaps make my efforts in the hobby a little more productive. One such was an idea I stole from Richard van Dijk about balancing an airplane and the invariably necessary “tweaking” of the c/g needed to get our planes fine- tuned. It’s too simple (this assumes we will be adding weight to the nose, as is usually the case to achieve proper balance) he just puts some weight on the end of a stick and pokes it up beside the battery as far forward as it will go. I us a bamboo skewer from the grocery store and some ¼ oz. lead weights from a fishing supply store (the ones shaped like little footballs with a hole through the middle). Epoxy 2 or 3 onto the skewer and include that into the initial balancing of the airplane, packing in a little foam to keep it in place. To adjust the c/g simply slide in a skewer with a little more or a little less weight. (No more taping lead to the tail boom as I have been known to do.) In 39 years I’ve collected quite an arsenal of useful (and just as many useless) tools to give me aid and comfort in pursuing my hobby. Near the top of my list of “most used” tools is a reamer. It’s one of a set I bought some 35 years ago that I’ve used on probably every plane I’ve built or set up since. It’s used to tweak the opening in servo arms and control horns. It’s a couple of inches long with a slight taper and several faceted cutting edges. Just insert it into the hole to be adjusted and give a couple of twists with your fingers until you get the perfect fit for the clevis pin. (Because of the taper give it a twist from first one side then the other.) I found mine at a local hardware store, but they are available from www.micromark.com. Item # 26108 for $23.55. They come in a set of four different sizes. (If you aren’t familiar with Micro Mark, it’s a great source for tools and other gadgets that you just can’t find anywhere else, though their prices can be just a little “spendy”.)

Keeping things in balance, and other odds and ends. By Dave Johnson

I’ve been flying R/C gliders since 1975 which probably means I don’t have a real life, but it

doesn’t mean I pretend to know everything there is to know about R/C gliders. Quite the

contrary, I’m certain that given the many branches that the evolutionary tree of soaring has

taken, that what I know today represents a much smaller percentage of the total scope of soaring

compared with what I knew 30 plus years ago. But by keeping my eyes, ears and mind open for

new ideas to borrow, steal, or sometimes discover on my own, I keep finding new ideas to keep

the hobby fresh and interesting and, perhaps make my efforts in the hobby a little more

productive.

One such was an idea I stole from Richard van Dijk about balancing an airplane and the

invariably necessary “tweaking” of the c/g needed to get our planes fine- tuned. It’s too simple

– (this assumes we will be adding weight to the nose, as is usually the case to achieve proper

balance) – he just puts some weight on the end of a stick and pokes it up beside the battery as far

forward as it will go. I us a bamboo skewer from the grocery store and some ¼ oz. lead weights

from a fishing supply store (the ones shaped like little footballs with a hole through the middle).

Epoxy 2 or 3 onto the skewer and include that into the initial balancing of the airplane, packing

in a little foam to keep it in place. To adjust the c/g simply slide in a skewer with a little more or

a little less weight. (No more taping lead to the tail boom as I have been known to do.)

In 39 years I’ve collected quite an arsenal of useful (and just as many useless) tools to give me

aid and comfort in pursuing my hobby. Near the top of my list of “most used” tools is a reamer.

It’s one of a set I bought some 35 years ago that I’ve used on probably every plane I’ve built or

set up since. It’s used to tweak the opening in servo arms and control horns. It’s a couple of

inches long with a slight taper and several faceted cutting edges. Just insert it into the hole to be

adjusted and give a couple of twists with your fingers until you get the perfect fit for the clevis

pin. (Because of the taper give it a twist from first one side then the other.) I found mine at a

local hardware store, but they are available from www.micromark.com. Item # 26108 for

$23.55. They come in a set of four different sizes. (If you aren’t familiar with Micro Mark, it’s a

great source for tools and other gadgets that you just can’t find anywhere else, though their

prices can be just a little “spendy”.)

Page 2: Keeping things in balance, and other odds and ends.northwestsoaringsociety.org/The Eagle/June 2014 NWSS Eagle Version 1.pdfJune 1, 2014 Nominations for 2015 Board of Directors and

Another useful item from Micro Mark is a soldering pad. Instead of trying to solder two wires

“in space”, just pin them to the pad and solder them right on the surface of the pad. A 6”x6” pad

is Item #70219 -- $20.25, (a little “spendy” for sure).

Also from Micro Mark are drill chucks to do slow speed drilling with your cordless screwdriver.

Item #82541 -- $10.95 for micro drill bits.

Item #81852 -- $11.85 for bits up to 1/8 in.

Another “tool” I only discovered a couple of years ago, despite having seen it in hardware stores

for years is J B Weld. It has become my favorite epoxy for specific applications. It is extremely

strong and makes an unbreakable bond with almost any surface. It also stays where you put it –

it doesn’t flow. It’s great for fastening brass connecters to pushrods (either carbon or music

wire). I also use to mount servo trays and servo mounts. It comes in two formulas: JB Weld (10

– 12 hour cure) and JB Quik (5 min. cure). Both seem equally strong. I keep finding new uses

for it. I recently made a new stabilizer “V” mount for my dlg “elf” glider, using aluminum sheet

and holding everything together with JB Quik.

Perhaps what I’ve written here is just old news to you, but just maybe you’ll get some useful

information from some of it.

Orrin Crooks Memorial Glider Contest Report By Bruce and Colleen Bumgarner

First contest of the flying season. We had 14 flyers with 8 flying in two classes. It was a fun

contest even if the weather prediction was wrong. Sat was the nicest of the two days partly

cloudy and highs in upper 50's.It rained every night but not on the contest; cooler on Sat. and

cross winds at times We flew 6 rounds on Sat. on Sunday it was 52 degrees up to 56 degrees

everyone was freezing Bruce called contest after 4 rounds. Everyone was bundled up gloves etc.

BURR. Thanks to everyone who helped put all the equipment away and then the trophies were

handed out. When everyone was gone and we locked the gate sun was out temps going up and

then it rained for 10min.Weird weather

When we held the pilot meeting on Sat. Big surprise Duane Cassidy appeared as the Wizard of

thermals. See April newsletter to see the costume. What fun he was having.

Last year Tom Culmsee promised to bring more pilots from his area.as it is always a fun contest

he delivered big time even though it was Mother’s Day weekend we had Dave Johnson, Kevin

Martin, Richard Van Dijk, Tom Brightbill

We had 10 experts in Open; 2 in 2-Meter; 2 in RES; and 8 flying in ALES. No competitors, ones

there flew in electric. Thanks to all who helped: Robin for bringing equipment trailer down on

Friday, Cathy Boysen for score keeping once Rex Grace set up computer and printer etc. and of

course the cookies the flyers love from Cathy. Duane Cassidy, the energizer bunny who was

everywhere. Especially set up. Bruce was CD called times for each round but decided his energy

level was down did not fly.

Certificates were given for top flyers but first a special presentation given to "Grandpa" Tom

Brightbill he had lost his special Allen Head wrench on the ground and it was not to be found but

someone handed it to Bruce to hand out during trophy presentation

Good time was had by all; Portland group said they would be back next year.

Cathy took a group photo as it was the 40th contest put on by the Moscow Club. Orrin Crooks

was one of the early members of NWSS Put on first contest in Moscow in 1973. Hugh turnout all

the top flyers from that time period, came to the contest. Only year we missed was when NATS

was held in Tri-Cities, WA and most of us were worker bees at the NATS for gliders. Orrin

passed away flying a float plane at air show in Lewiston week after the 1975 contest and Bruce

was given the CD Job for the contest in 1976. By Nominations by Cliff Mink and Ed Huffman

and other CDs from Spokane area as that was how it was done in those years. Now you know the

rest of the story rest is History and what fun history it was Canada, Spokane, Portland, Montana,

Seattle and huge turnouts of flyers. Scoring by hand, manual retrieve chutes.

Etc. MARVELOUS TIMES FOR ALL.

I forgot to put down the Thermal Wizard. Duane has made 2 new trophies both nice and he

thought his would be the 3rd. time on the old one however the Thermal Wizard was won by Jim

Frahm with 64:51 and 2nd was Tom Brightbill 64:47 and 3rd. 64:42 Better luck next time

Duane. And thanks for the neat new trophies.

Moving right along to other items. Here is a copy of an email that I received from Kevin Martin regarding the

Air Fair in Sequim.

Hi Kevin,

I would like to know if there is interest in some area members coming to an event in Sequim for a demo/fly off

DLG event. In 2013 Jim Tolpin flew his DL: G at the R/C demo, impressed a bunch of us and now a few of us

are building them (I have a Mountain ModelsDL-50 and a SuperGee2 on the building board and a Mini DLG to

get the launch technique down already in hand)

The Event is:

http://olympicpeninsulaairaffaire.com/

At Sequim Valley Airport:

http://www.sequimvalleyairport.com/air-affaire/

I am a member with TRI Area RC flyers and working on getting a soaring/electrics club here in Sequim. I was

formerly a member of Tidewater Model Soaring Society in Hampton Roads, VA, which was a very active

soaring only club. I flew and learned a lot from the late Bob Champine (2 x LSF Level V) as well as Woody

Blanchard and Herk Stokley.

While the rumor is that there is "no lift” here in the Sequim/Dungeness valley among the “power" only" set, no

one told the raptors who frequent the area, and there is now a Pipstrel Virus exploring the area from the airport

and, as a sailplane flyer who fly’s 1:1 scale in Arizona, the area is ripe for development for then new power and

self-launching sailplanes on the market. Getting exposure for soaring at Air Affair with models will help.

The Air Affair is a great event in the manner of old fashion family fly in’s with 3000 people here last year; Tri

Area got a lot of interest and a few new family memberships. I think having a larger soaring presence will help

and DLG is a scale of performance flying that can easily be accommodated in the designated area we have,

away from the active runway, cooperatively with the airport for the event.

Please let me know if this is of interest

Peter Becker

That’s about it for this month, many thanks to Dave Johnson for his article “Keeping things in balance, and

other odds and ends”, Colleen and Bruce for the Orrin Crooks Memorial Glider Contest Report, Cathy Boysen

for the Orrin Crooks pictures, and to Kevin Martin for forwarding the email about the Air Fair in Sequim.
