Characteristics of a Healthy diet? adequate food
diversified,
balanced
Health Effects of Healthy Diet:Reduced prevalence of nutrient deficiencies
• Reduced prevalence of obesity;
• Reduced incidence of non-communicable diseases- diabetes, heart diseases, etc.
10
Pulses as a valuable component for healthy diet
Reduces risk of diabetes and other
NCDs
Nutritional attributes that contribute to a
healthy diet
Phytonutrient promotes anti-cancer
properties
Increases satiety and weight loss
Improves colon health reduces risk of colon-
rectal cancers

Putting pulses within the global nutrition agenda for Healthy Diets
SDG Goal2: End Hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture
12
ICN2 FFA gives nine recommended actions for promoting Healthy Diets (Rec 8-16)
Review national policies …..to ensure food security and enable healthy diets
Strengthen local food production…
Promote diversification of crops…..
Improve storage, preservation…reduce food loss and waste
Establish and strengthen institutions
Develop, adopt and adapt…international guidelines on healthy diets
..Improve nutrient content of foods
Explore voluntary instruments…to promote healthy diets
Establish food standards to make healthy diets accessible…
13
ICN2 FFA gives nine recommended actions for promoting Healthy Diets (Rec 8-16)
”we commit to enhance sustainable food systems by developing public policies from production to consumption and across sectors to provide year-round access to food that meets people’s nutrition needs and promote safe and diversified healthy diets.”
14
ICN2 requests Decade of Action on Nutrition Rome Declaration Rec #17
“ We recommend the UNGA to endorse the Rome
Declaration as well as FfA…and to consider declaring a Decade of Action on Nutrition from 2016-2025 within existing structures and available resources”
15
Opportunity for pulses within the Decade
FAO and WHO to lead the implementation of the Decade with WFP,IFAD,UNICEF;
Develop a work programme for the Decade; Coordinate with UNSCN, CFS Invites Governments… civil society, private sector, academia to actively
support the implementation of the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition
16
Opportunity for pulses within the DecadeDecade content: 6 pillars
sustainable food systems for healthy diets;
aligned health systems providing universal coverage of essential nutrition actions;
social protection and nutrition education;
trade and investment for improved nutrition;
enabling food and breastfeeding environments;
review, strengthen and promote nutrition governance and accountability

Putting pulse into country Food-Based Dietary Guidelines
18
Pulses in Food Based Dietary Guidelines FBDGs
FAO currently engaged with more than 50 member states for the development and implementation of their FBDGs
FBDGs are what a country recommends their citizens eat to be healthy
They have to beo Culturally adequateo Fulfill nutrition requirementso Respond to nutrition challengeso Feasibleo Sustainable
Many countries include pulses in their FBDGs
Should inform both supply and demand policies and programs
19
Pulses in School meal menus At least 368 million children are being fed
through schools around the world
School meal guidelines
set the overall nutrient composition of school meals and diversified foods that could fulfill them
can stimulate nutrition-sensitive local production and procurement
can include and promote pulses as part of a culturally accepted diet
should be aligned with the FBDGs
Global nutrition situation calls for repositioning our food systems to deliver on healthy diets needed for optimal nutrition and health outcomes
Global Nutrition agenda (ICN2, SDG, Decade of Action on Nutrition, etc.) present opportunities for re-shaping the food system to deliver on healthy diets.
Putting pulse in the global nutrition agenda workplan will make the attainment of healthy diet for all a reality.
The IYP and pulse promotion should therefore continue beyond 2016.
