Pulses in Food Based Dietary Guidelines FBDGs

FAO currently engaged with more than 50 member states for the development and implementation of their FBDGs

FBDGs are what a country recommends their citizens eat to be healthy

They have to beo Culturally adequateo Fulfill nutrition requirementso Respond to nutrition challengeso Feasibleo Sustainable

Many countries include pulses in their FBDGs

Should inform both supply and demand policies and programs

Pulses in School meal menus At least 368 million children are being fed

through schools around the world

School meal guidelines

set the overall nutrient composition of school meals and diversified foods that could fulfill them

can stimulate nutrition-sensitive local production and procurement

can include and promote pulses as part of a culturally accepted diet

should be aligned with the FBDGs

Page 20: Keeping pulse within the nutrition agenda

Global nutrition situation calls for repositioning our food systems to deliver on healthy diets needed for optimal nutrition and health outcomes

Global Nutrition agenda (ICN2, SDG, Decade of Action on Nutrition, etc.) present opportunities for re-shaping the food system to deliver on healthy diets.

Putting pulse in the global nutrition agenda workplan will make the attainment of healthy diet for all a reality.

The IYP and pulse promotion should therefore continue beyond 2016.
