In the holidays, we went as a family to Luna Park. Let’s get one thing clear from the start, I don’t like heights and I don’t enjoy feeling like my stomach is exiting my body! But being the mum sometimes means setting the example. Once we entered the Park, I was brave enough to go on the Pirate Ship. I then watched everyone else go on a lot of other rides. ☺ But it was my children who surprised me, particularly Jenna. She had no fear and went on everything! Kids are natural risk takers. This may be one reason God will use young people so powerfully. They are willing to take risks. As we get older, we become more cautious. Why? We have had experiences in life, and things have not always gone as we hoped they would. As a result, we are a little more careful. But when we are young, we are willing to go for it. We are willing to try. So a lot of the great things God does are often through young people. This year, we are trying some new things at St John’s, we consider these ‘risks’ very carefully. We are asking our school community to come on the journey with us – have faith, support us and be involved. The more this happens - the less worry, fear and anxiety there is around the ‘new’. Faith is not faith if there is no risk. Faith is a living, restless thing, and it cannot be inoperative. Faith has no back door. There is no safety net. Let’s take the ride together. A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL

I believe creating a healthy school is much more than striving for academic excellence. I also believe that success within a school isn't just measured by formal test results. This week at our staff devotion, I played a clip of the Brownlee brothers. Alistair and Johnathan Brownlee are triathletes from Great Britain. Towards the end of the race, Johnny’s body began to fail. Alistair was about to pass his younger brother, yet he wrapped his arms under Johnny’s and carried him to the finish line. Sacrificing his own chance of a win, Alistair placed another's needs before his own. This is one of the most inspirational acts of sportsmanship I’ve seen in recent times. I encourage families to take the time to watch the clip as it demonstrates what we are striving to build in our students here at St John’s.

View at www.youtube.com/watch?v=CS0GkCfljqk or search Brownlee Brothers Mexico

We are acknowledging the importance of all students striving to achieve academic success. We are also striving to build resilient, confident and compassionate learners who are willing to put others before themselves.

Philippians 2:3 “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility

value others above yourselves”.

FROM THE DEPUTY

What a tremendous Week One we had! It was so great to see all our returning faces and our new students. The Kinders and Little Saints have settled into school life with relative ease, it’s going to be a great year!

SWIMMING Our 3-6s have been enjoying their ‘Learn To Swim’ program at Gould Swim Academy this week. We thank the academy for the specific skills that they have been able to pass onto the students. Please ask your child how they have been going at their lessons. (If they are not too exhausted when they get home!) Our swimming carnival is fast approaching on 21st February. Please see the notes from Mrs Trethowan, sent home with your child today and offer to help if you can – we can’t operate our carnivals without your help.

STAY IN TOUCH Please keep reading the newsletter for updates and sign up to our Facebook page. Mr Moss and I are updating regularly with photos and videos of what is going on around the school. We welcome any feedback or ideas of what you would like to see.

PARENT INFORMATION NIGHT Next Monday night—11th February at 6.30pm, is our Parent Information Night. Mr Moss and I will share in the hall from 6:30-7pm about the exciting 2019 school year. After this, your child’s classroom will be open for half an hour for you to have a quick look, grab some class specific information and chat with your child’s teacher. This is not the forum for an in-depth discussion about your child. That can be arranged through an appointment made at the front office.

SELLING SECOND HAND UNIFORMS Just a reminder that there is a facebook page set up for selling second hand uniforms. As it is not the responsibility of the school to be involved in these transactions, please make arrangements in your own time for delivery of clothing and payment, not at the school office. We appreciate your understanding. READERS—Breaking News!! New readers coming to St John’s! Over the coming months we are upgrading our Home Reader collections, hoping to inspire both you and your child to read at home.

As we now have Learning Coaches operating throughout the school, we are asking that reader folders be kept in school bags. Please record what you have read with your child, either in their diary or their reading log and this will be checked daily. You may get the same readers for a few days and this is fine as re-reading does not hurt development.

To support the new readers, and in encouraging your child to be respectful of school property, we are asking all student to have a St John’s Library bag. These can be purchased from the front office for $8.50. They are very durable and will last your child for many years of schooling.

We look forward to seeing you next Monday night at 6:30pm.

Megan Dickins—Deputy Principal

ICAS INFORMATION FOR 2019 The International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) are independent skills-based assessments with a competition element. ICAS are developed annually for primary and secondary school students in the subject areas of Computer Skills, English, Mathematics, Science, Spelling and Writing. A new ICAS paper for each subject in each year level is developed annually by our team of subject matter experts. All papers are reviewed by experienced teachers to ensure that they accurately assess students’ skills and are relevant to what they are learning at school. ICAS are invigilated by teachers in schools under normal examination conditions. Administration Guidelines are provided with ICAS papers to ensure that the same conditions are afforded to all students sitting ICAS. Over two million student entries are accepted from over 6,300 schools in Australia and New Zealand annually. In addition, students from over 20 countries including Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, Singapore, South Africa and the USA participate in ICAS each year. If you wish for your child/ren to participate in all or one of the competitions please send the form below WITH THE CASH/CHEQ or CREDIT DETAILS to the office as soon as possible so that we can register your child. The NSW Legislation states that doing so is punishable by law. Section 231 of the Children and Young Persons (Care and Protection) Act 1998 reads:

“A person who leaves any child or young person in the person’s care in a motor vehicle without proper supervision for such a period or in such circumstances that: (a) the child or young person becomes or is likely to become emotionally distressed, or (b) the child’s or young person’s health becomes or is likely to become permanently or temporarily impaired, is guilty of an offence”.
