The Decatur Heritage Christian Academy board of trustees is charged with protecting the key identity of the school through the setting of policy, providing a firm financial foundation, and hiring and evaluating one employee, the headmaster. In that role, I have the privilege and responsibility of managing our chief learning leader, Jeremy Jones. Mr. Jones is then directly responsible for the oversight of those folks on the front lines on a daily basis,

Scott Mayo, Headmasterour classroom teachers. One of our primary concerns is Keeping First Things First in those classrooms. As crucial as that instruction is in fulfilling our mission, however, a Decatur Heritage education isn’t constrained by only what occurs within the classroom walls.

We are very proud of the breadth and depth of our extracurricular offerings and the role they play in preparing our students for lives of impact. These activities are important for many reasons. Students choose to participate based on their own interests and gifts. They get to interact with their peers (and other students outside of their daily circles) in completely different environments than the normal educational settings. They also get to learn from adults (oftentimes teachers) in more informal ways. These opportunities range from sports teams to service clubs, competitive academic teams to mission teams, Center for Excellence classes to Masterpiece fine arts. As is true for most of life, the experience the students enjoy in each of these areas will be directly proportional to the focused energy they expend.

The benefit of broadening an education through extracurricular activities is open to most all students in most all schools. Is there something unique about participating in those areas here at DHCA? Biblically speaking, I do believe we have the opportunity to gain worthwhile life experiences through team or club membership here while avoiding two prevalent pitfalls. Seen through the lens of a Christian worldview, the phrase “it’s not whether you win or lose, but how you play the game” takes on new meaning.

First, we are to honor God in all we do, serving as unto the Lord and not man. This mindset should combat the temptation to use our extracurricular activities as self-serving bullet points for a college resume. Our teammates, those we lead, and those we are serving, deserve better. If we are filling a class office for the Lord, programming a robot for the Lord, or practicing our free throws for the Lord, those depending on our contribution to the endeavor will see the benefit, and our activities, no matter how seemingly insignificant, can glorify God.

Blessed are those who find wisdom, and those who gain understanding...Proverbs 3:13

(Continued from front cover)

At the other end of the spectrum, if we are truly Keeping First Things First in our extracurriculars, we will avoid the all too common temptation to turn the activity into an idol. When our passionate participation crosses the line, when we identify our success or failure in a game with our worth, when we “do whatever it takes” to win, we have lost sight of our true callings. These things are explained away sometimes by saying they are just part of the game. If so, is that really worth compromising our witness?

One of the lines I use to prospective parents in describing the full range of what we do here at Decatur Heritage is to note that God has made our students more than just brains. A holistic view of our humanity, created in His image, mandates providing a well-rounded experience composed of academic instruction, spiritual development, service and leadership opportunities, and exploration of God-given interests and talents in all sorts of ways. All of those areas must be brought under the precepts of God, giving special attention to those parts of life where abuses are culturally prevalent and even celebrated. Please pray for continued wisdom and faithfulness as Decatur Heritage seeks to honor God in every area of school life – extracurricular activities included!

Our computer students, under the instruction of Mrs. Laura Tuttle, are learning a wealth of information this year.  Here is a snapshot of what each class is learning. Kindergarten is practicing logging on and off of the computer and reading along with books while learning the keys on the keyboard. Our first graders are learning how to sit at the computer and use the keyboard to type properly. Second graders have learned to use Excel for practicing their addition and subtraction, Word for making Valentines, and Google while working on a space unit. The third grade has learned to create a new Word document, insert a table, and add text and images from Google. As our fourth graders continue to research for class, they have explored hidden tools in Google which help refine their research skills. They have also learned how to use Alabama Virtual Library as a resource. Our fifth graders have learned to use Excel for figuring a data table, and Google's dictionary, calculator, converter, and area code locater in effort to fine tune their Internet search skills. They are also learning how to evaluate the creditability of a website. Several members of the fifth grade class have assembled to write the Heritage Herald newsletter. The sixth graders have learned how to use Alabama Virtual Library for credible research on sea creatures and how to publish their own tri-fold brochure using Word and Google images. The seventh grade class has completed a career research unit which consisted of diagnostic testing using questionnaires and neuroscience, and then compiled their information into a Prezi. They are currently learning MLA formatting. The upper school STIE class has also been working on a career study and will present their findings using Prezi.

Reece Wilkerson (’28) practices logging in and off of the computer.

Florence Bowman (’21) and Katie Wallace (’21) practice using MLA citations.

Why We Chose Decatur Heritage...

Twelve years ago as I trekked across the campus of the University of North Alabama from the Infirmary to the athletic department for a work study assignment, I was praying. I left the Infirmary with the new knowledge that my husband and I were expecting our first child (who is now eleven years old). We had been married for eight months at this point and attending college. As I walked across campus, I felt a desire to pray for the future of the child I had yet to meet, to pray for his life, his purpose, and his future, which included a desire for him to attend DHCA if we continued to live in the north Alabama area. Yes, in March 2004, I asked God to make a way for our unborn child to have the opportunity to attend Decatur Heritage.

Before ever having knowledge of the beautiful Spring Avenue campus we now know and love, I was praying Decatur Heritage would be the school that would come alongside our family and continue to lay and cultivate the foundation of Jesus Christ in our child’s life. Fast forward to 2010. I had become a single mom and Ian was about to start kindergarten. I had no idea how I would pay for his education or get him to school, let alone what people might think of me being a single mom. However, God has continued to answer my prayers and now all three of my children (Ian, Samara, and Jeremiah) attend DHCA. It has been a blessing that came at a time in our lives when we would need a system of support. We have experienced the love of Christ, access to academic excellence, as well as the continued focus on the biblical teachings and standards set by the gospel of Jesus Christ.

My children are being equipped with the tools they will need to walk in the purpose for which God created for them and this is why I chose Decatur Heritage. Many people do not understand my choice, but I will not give up on DHCA until God says the door is closed. God is doing a great work through the Decatur Heritage family within the community; it is a light on a hill. I want my children to be a part of that light so that others will come to know there is hope no matter your status in society.

It is great to be a Decatur Heritage Eagle!

I know that we all hate it, but this school year is coming to a close unfortunately. And because we are a fallen race, it is during this exciting time a phenomenon occurs in which students start to slack and neglect their academics. Now, of course, Decatur Heritage students would never do this (yeah, right); it is still important to take a moment from our busy lives and reflect upon why we are even working in the first place. First, the answer lies within Scripture. God put Adam in the garden to work (Genesis 2:15). According to Colossians 3:12, we are also called to work as unto the Lord. Choosing to procrastinate, slack, and not do work is not glorifying to God; it is lazy. Scripture also addresses laziness. In fact, we are told that "the hand of the diligent will rule, while the slack hand will be put to forced labor” (Proverbs 12:24). If we are striving to be followers of Christ, then laziness is not the correct approach. So, fellow laborers, join me in a commitment to persevering to be workers approved and not ashamed (2 Timothy 2:15).

I will always recall my time at Heritage with fondness. One of my favorite memories was physics class. I was one of four students taught by Mrs. Cambron. We built our own tornado, took science project field trips to Home Depot, and talked about which country star the three guys in the class were crushing on at any given point in time. Needless to say, it was memorable.

When I wasn’t building tornadoes or helping with the student band, I could usually be found with my best friends Joy, Ginny, and Holly Grace. Through sleepless nights of cramming for Mr. Holiday’s finals to endless afternoons of art projects for Mrs. Holland’s English class, we were there for each other developing lifetime friendships.

I don’t think I realized how much of an impact DHCA had on me until I left. As a college freshman at Union University, I immediately noticed that prerequisite classes were much easier for me than for many of my peers. College English was a breeze, thanks to Mrs. Holland. And studying for nursing classes? I learned to absorb information like a sponge, thanks to Mr. Holiday’s (terrifying) Bible finals. In the end, I was thankful that I had been encouraged to push myself beyond my perceived limits.

But it wasn’t only academics that rendered me grateful. Once I left home, I was confronted with people who didn’t believe the same things I believed. They didn’t know and love the Jesus I knew and loved. Without the solid theological teaching from the Bible classes, I wouldn’t have known how to defend my faith intelligently. And without the encouraging mentorship I found in my teachers, I might have lost heart to even try to defend Him.

In 2012, I received a nursing degree from Union University. The following year, I married my godly husband and best friend, Wayne Campbell. In 2014, God blessed us with our first son, Rowen. And last year, we accepted a call as church planters and moved our family across the country and to British Columbia, Canada! Currently partnered with NAMB, we are working to engage a group of people that is 97% unchurched and agnostic. As I look back and appreciate where the Lord has brought me, I’m so glad that He included DHCA on my journey. Decatur Heritage prepared me to live life well and to love Jesus with both my heart and my mind. And that is an immeasurable gift for which I will always be grateful.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

My name is Brittany Campbell and I am a proud 2008 graduate of Decatur Heritage Christian Academy. I had the privilege of attending this school for all of my high school years. Having ventured from a lifetime of homeschooling, my class of sixteen seemed large and overwhelming at first! However, I was welcomed by both students and teachers into my new learning environment.

It’s great to be a

Heritage Eagle!

The Booster Club recently provided over $13,000 in funding at the request of the athletic department. Here are highlights of the items approved for spring sports and football:

Football - replace helmets to comply with current concussion requirements

Softball - practice equipment and balls, helmets, protective screens, and a training machine

Baseball - practice equipment and balls, helmets, bats, and additional jerseys for new players

Golf - team golf balls

Tennis - uniforms for boys’ and girls’ teams

Soccer - practice equipment, balls, and additional jerseys for new players

A nominating committee has been formed for the 2016-2017 board member elections and the six executive committee positions. Several board positions are open. If you have a current fifth through 8th grade student, your child will soon be active in junior varsity and varsity sports. The Booster Club would love for you to get involved now. Please contact Brian Cagle if you have an interest or recommendation at [email protected] or 256-227-4444.

The purpose of the Booster Club is to support the athletic department’s goal to build a state-championship caliber program across a variety of sports. We accomplish this effort by promoting parent, student, and alumni involvement, recognizing the efforts of our student athletes, and engaging in responsible fundraising activities to provide items that go beyond the normal scope of the athletic department’s budget.

The booster club stands ready to assist the athletic department in providing for our student athletes by working closely with Coach Patterson and Coach Atchley to evaluate and accommodate needs.
