Sunday, Sept. 27: 35th Anniversary Potluck Picnic! The Pant Creek Folklore Society’s 35th Anniversary Celebration is on!
Why? Because thirty-five years is a great milestone, because it’s free, and because it’s fun!
When? Sunday, September 27, 2009, starting at noon.
Who Is Invited? All current, past, and potential future members of PCFS. Annual dues are due in September, so this is a great opportunity to sign up for the year. I may not have updated addresses for all members, so please pass this on to 'Creekers we haven't seen for a while, and also to friends you would like to introduce.
Where? The Hawk Woods Nature Center and Campground in Auburn Hills. There is a small picnic shelter, picnic tables, park-style grills, a huge fire pit and firewood, trash containers, and real nice bathroom and shower facilities. There are nature trails, a pond, and an emergency kiosk,. That’s not cool enough? There is a lodge too. It’s rustic, handicap accessible, and filled with tables and chairs.
But wait, there’s even more. We also have access to rent six rustic cabins for the night, a total of 26 bunks with mattresses. We’ll split rental costs so the maximum per bunk is $20. However, if we fill all 26 bunks they will only be $5 each! Cabin reservations are on a first come, first served basis, so call or email Andy soon to get on the list.
This also means we don’t have to leave until 9:30 Monday morning. Those of you who are still gainfully employed may wish to arrange a late start on Monday!
How Do We Get There? There’s a map on the next page, but here’s the basics: The park is located at 3799 Bald Mountain Road, Auburn Hills, MI 48326. That’s between Lapeer Road and Squirrel Road, near the Palace. You can also visit the park website, http://www.auburnhills.org, or for more information call the office at (248) 370-9353.
What Should I Bring? Instruments, voices, songs, tunes, good cheer, and stuff to eat and share at a picnic. Bring camp chairs, flashlights, and your own beverages. PCFS provides paper products, utensils, cups, and garbage bags.
If you bring a pet, also fetch whatever you need to clean up after it and a leash (both are required). If you’re staying the night, don’t forget your towels, pillows, a cozy sleeping bag or sheets and blankets.
What Should I Not Bring? Don’t bring alcohol, because that’s prohibited. Also, don’t bring money for an entrance fee or parking, because those are free!
This is going to be great! Okay, they have dibs on this bunk…

Map to the Anniversary Picnic, Sunday September 27th The Hawk Woods Nature Center is located near the Palace of Auburn Hills. Bald Mountain Road can be reached the north off Brown Road, or from the south off Walton from the south (by way of Phillips). According to the map there is a turn-off from Lapeer road, too, though I haven’t tried it myself.
Next Meeting: October 3rd Please join us for our next regular meeting at Lawnridge Hall.
The doors open at 4pm for jamming, so call your friends and remind them to bring their voices and instruments. There is also a Songwriter’s Circle from 4pm until 6pm. This will be a great time to get new ideas, get feedback on your current work, and show off what you’re working on.
We encourage everyone to arrive by 7:00 for the main part of the meeting so we have time to chat, pick up the new directory, and renew your membership. The meeting starts promptly at 7:30. The song themes for October are Halloween and Back to School. Maggie Ferguson will lead the Song of the Month, Pumpkin Town.
Our workshop this month is on California songwriter Kate Wolf. Many of her songs have become classics, including Across the Great Divide and Give Yourself to Love. After the workshop, we will share some snacks and treats. Our host this month Joann Shulte.
After that is the Song Swap. Whether your thing is instrumental, a capella, solo, groups, poetry or readings, the Song Swap is your chance to get up in front of an enthusiastic, supportive group of friends. Everyone from the beginning-est of beginners to professionals are encouraged to give it a try. As always, slots are limited, so it is best to come early to sign up.
We usually break for “jamming and jawboning” around 10pm, and go until almost midnight. We hope you’ll join us... it just isn’t the without you!
Lawnridge Hall
Lawnridge Hall is located at 385 South Adams Road in Rochester Hills, on the campus of University Presbyterian Church. UPC is on the east side of Adams Road, between Hamlin and Avon.

Over the years, Annie and Rod have done it all; from rock to musical theater and while they continue to draw from a carpet bag of genres and influences, what comes out is a hybrid sound all their own. Others say, "Annie and Rod Capps write complex, winding melodies that fit Annie's delicate voice perfectly. She sings with a relaxed, clean Midwestern twang, sliding you into the middle of lives and situations that are always interesting and dotted with real insight." - Dave Siglin, The Ark. “Super-genial, understated musicians that will rip your heart out with a song if you put your guard down. You’ve been warned… you’ll be charmed.” - Fran Snyder of Concertsinyourhome.com. We say, Annie may be the most clever and unique lyricist we’ve had the pleasure of presenting, and Rod is as tasteful a lead

Return of the Hat Band
This is how it works: Interested folks put a slip of paper with their name on it into a hat, and four names are drawn randomly. Those four will perform something topical at the next Song Swap. The band for October includes Jim Foley, Dave Belferman, Jack Ericson, and Shawn Billingsley.
Next Board Meeting: Wednesday, October 21st
Our next meeting of the PCFS board will be Wednesday, October 21st, 7:00 pm at the Fergeson home. All members are invited, but not required to attend, and all input is welcome. This is where we discuss the society’s finances and talk about stuff that members suggest. If you need directions, or want to contribute but can’t be there in person, just call one of your board members. That’s what we’re here for. It’s your group!
Directory Updates
There are four duplicate entries, and one out of alphabetical order. There are two name corrections, which should read “Dave Belferman” and “Arthur Kuhn”
In addition, please welcome our newest member: Evie Boss, 3551 Merritt Lake Drive, Metamora, MI 48455, (810) 678-2542, [email protected]
An updated directory will be published in December or January.
Nametags
We apologize for the delay in getting new nametags for members. We’ve had trouble with our supplier, and are working on alternatives. There will be an announcement in the Keepin’ Tabs before we place the order.

Randall Williams Capo Workshop
Randall Williams is the headliner of the November 8th Comfy Concert (see page 5). He was also one of the earliest experimenters with partial capos, and is now a clinician for Kyser capos. He will hold a workshop on Monday, November 9th, the day after the concert. This is a rare opportunity to learn from the best!
Volume 33, Issue 2 Keepin’ Tabs Page 5
Randall Williams Rich Warren (WFMT Chicago) says in Sing Out magazine, “Randall Williams explodes onto the scene like a bolt of lightning. It's rare that a honey-toned tenor carries as much force as Williams. Combine that voice with highly articulate guitar work and superlative songs for a most powerful presence…. The music hooks your ears while the contents catch your feelings.” After graduating from the Royal Conservatory of Mons, Belgium at the head of his class, Randall Williams left the world of classical music for the world of traveling with his guitar, writing songs in train stations and sleeping on couches, then singing and playing on street corners, cafés, and pubs. Randall is as much at home in a Bangkok slum or a Senegalese village, at the Kennedy Center in D.C. or the Fine Arts Palace in Brussels sandwiched between a twitchy orchestra and a full house, or shoeless on the floor of your (our) living room. In addition to many great songs, Randall has written a book about his sailing adventures, and two Hal Leonard guitar instruction books on the use of partial capos. Come hear the music Randall has synthesized from his life of adventures. Check him out at http://www.whereisrandall.com/

Also Presenting ~ Parly Brothers
Paint Creek Folklore Society Proudly Presents a PAINT CREEK COMFY CONCERT
Featuring
Partly Brothers are Luti Erbežnik and Brian Wood, two experienced folk/rock singer-songwriters whose music will relax and inspire you. With rich vocal harmonies and a blend of acoustic guitars, Partly Brothers craft beautiful catchy tunes woven of intriguing lyrics. They tell stories of experiences we’ve all had--the warmth of home, the exhilaration of love, loss of love, and hope, with themes ranging from old-fashioned rendezvous to Internet dating, pets’ antics to ethnic pride. Originally from Yugoslavia, Luti infuses the duo with subtle sounds of Eastern European and Middle Eastern
folk music. Michigan native Brian has played for many years with local group The Troubadads. Our own Maggie Ferguson (Live from the Living Room) says "magical indeed - Luti and Brian combine their voices so well that they might as well be brothers completely!" No live music is performed in the Café. Got it? By the way, the Blue Note Café has great food, great coffee, and a cool ambiance for hanging out.
