Moment We Are In
• The House of Representatives under the control of the GOP has failed to pass an immigration reform
• After failing to pass CIR, some Republicans are playing politics instead of protecting the children fleeing violence
• Need to Call for Big and Broad Administrative Relief from the President
The House of Representatives Failed to Pass Immigration Reform
• Speaker Boehner • [Add in list of MOC’s in
your state that did not support immigration reform]
• MOC• MOC• MOC• MOC
Congress is playing politics instead of protecting the children fleeing violence
• After failing to pass CIR, some Republicans are playing politics instead of protecting the children fleeing violence
• Over 50 thousand children from CA since last October
• Politicians saying:– President’s fault– Deport them– Change children protection law– No supplemental until..– Guards at the border– Encouraging anti-immigrant
sentiment and actions
“The changes brought into this are ones I’ve developed and advocated for over the past two years…It’s like I ordered it off the menu.” –Rep. Steve King
June 30th, President Obama met w/ community leaders and announced:
The President Needs to Grant Big and Broad
Administrative Relief
President Needs to Grant Big and Broad Administrative Relief
What can the President do?:1) Grant affirmative relief to immigrant families
– Grant deferred action to those individuals who would be eligible for legalization under S.744 and H.R. 15.• This has the potential to affect an estimated 9.6 million people!
– More modest proposals would extend DACA to smaller populations, such as:• Employed adults (6.4 million)• Individuals present in the U.S. for at least five years as of March 2010 (8.7
million)• Individuals present in the U.S. for at least ten years (6.4 million)• Parents or legal guardians of minor children (4.7 million)• Parents or legal guardians of U.S. citizen children (3.8 million)• Parents or legal guardians of DACA recipients (1 million)• Individuals previously granted prosecutorial discretion (28,893)
President Needs to Grant Big and Broad Administrative Relief
2) Stop the high rate of deportations and reform immigration enforcement policies and practices
– Stop targeting people for deportation who have deep roots in the community.
– End the involvement of state and local agencies in immigration enforcement
– Bring greater accountability to border operations
– Ensure immigration detention is used only as a last resort
– Promote fairness in the removal process
Time to Take Action!
What can Elected Officials do?
• All Elected Officials: Sign – on to the Letter Calling on President Obama to grant big and broad administrative relief.
• Local Officials: Be the force of good and protect the children coming to your state fleeing violence.
• Members of Congress: provide some funding to address the refugee situation but protect the children fleeing harm and ensure they have due process protections
What Can We Do?
1. VOTE and register and mobilize voters to punish the elected officials that failed to pass an immigration reform and continue to separate families!
With their votes to defund DACA and strip protections for refugee children and families, the GOP still needs to hear from us and must be held accountable!
2. Call and tell the White House that our community needs a big and broad administrative relief NOW!
