This project is inspired by the place that science and art meet. It is a place where people can share their stories and feeling with one another, for communication, for expression. Communication doesn’t only exist between individual, but also between human and nature, past and present, people and space. So, I chose the theme Sharing-communication.

I have been thinking about how I can design this space to serve people. I made a bold leap and brought the concept of “supermarket” into my idea; supermarket throughout every corner of the city, to meet the needs of people of different walks of life. I hope the people will not only buy products from here. People deserve more than that; the emotions supermarket is a place that allows us to connect feeling. I want to perceive the world through my emotions supermarket.

The emotions supermarket is not just traditional market, but a place where people can share express emotions and connect to each other.

Traditional Chinese Gilt Hollow Flower Pattern Silver Ball With Lanyard

It was assembled by two hemispheres. They

were linked to the hinge and hook with chains

to prepare open hollow ball bird pattern. Ball

in two interlocking rings built a small spoon for

the discharge of spices. By gravity and activities buckles role, regardless of how the ball rolling rotation incense, a small spoon always maintain a balance up, Mars and ash will not pour out. The ancients made use of mechanical principles ingenious design. The internal energy in Hong balls remain small spoon balancing devices, modern machinery called “gimbal” or “gimbal.”

As main exhibition hall, the largest building is located in central of the design. There are six individual exhibition spaces with different functions around the main exhibition hall, three of them are theme exhibition halls, one is cinema, one is restaurant, and one is gift shop. Every space is connected by “track”. The “track” can be used to make six additional spaces’ location change and is the path for visitors.

Exhibition & Model

Visual illusion art is used in exterior design. I utilized two-dimension visual illusion in architecture exterior design. The exterior are consist of line elements with different thickness, it give visitors feel the façade is three-dimension rather than two-dimension. Every individual additional building also took advantage of various line elements to constitute their façades.

The main building is located in Xi’an EXPO Park in the suburbs of Xi’an. At same time, I design some mobile display spaces distribute in different area in downtown in Xi’an, such as city plaza, garden and business quarter. The space’s diameter is four meters. Residences could experience the Emotional Supermarket at all times. In addition, the spaces are designed for residences’ convenience. They could get free newspaper from there, take rest in there and get water to drink.

In my graduation display show, I also used line as design element to arrange the exhibition. The wood strips were suspended in the center of the space. The model was made by hand and machine and constituted by acrylic and LED lights. The details of interior design were displayed on two walls. And the details about exterior design were exhibited through the frame and distributed in the space. There are two televisions played animation of the whole design. At same time, I designed some peripheral products are related to my design, such as postcards, business cards, picture albums and textbooks.

In Science and Technology Exhibition Hall, I used triple prism with light as design element. It is a common scientific principle: when the light goes through tripe triple, it would refract seven colors spectrum. The triple prism decomposes nature light to seven color, red, orange, yellow, green, cyan, blue and purple.

I was trying to use light of science that is a common principle to express the science and technology. When visitors enter space, they could experience various change of light in a dark space that made the space feel mysterious. The skylight was invited into the space at the top of building. And the nature light were reflected and refracted by plenty triple prisms to illuminate the space without additional power that would save energy consumption. But during cloudy and rainy day, the electronic power would be connected to the exhibition hall automatically.

City And Community Exhibition Hall

In the City and Community Exhibition Hall, I took advantage of abstract exterior normal buildings to arrange interior space. And behind the white abstract structure, there is a huge LED screen that can be change to different sights, like modern city, public park and alleyway between two tall buildings. All these views were presenting residences’ everyday life. Artificial turf covered the floor that make visitors could really experience their life scenes.

Visitors could experience their various life scenes in the exhibition. They also could communicate with others who may unfamiliar to each other. They could open their mind to make new friends. It is important to share and communicate in modern society. The exhibition provided a space to all people to share and communicate.

Nature And Human Exhibition Hall

In our children hood, almost every child liked to play with dandelion, a small and cute plant. Countless seeds are assembled in the top of dandelion. When we puff the white fine hair away, seeds migrate to various places through wind. They would produce new generation. The relationship between children and dandelion is like human and nature. So I chose dandelion as design element to arrange the interior space.

I amplified the shape of dandelion and use these the shape to divide the space. When visitors are under the dandelion shape structure, they will surprise to the design. Visitors used the rape to arrive to second floor. The top structure would appear. This is one kind of communication between human and nature. I tried to use this space to express the concept of environment protection as well.

Visitors could watch movies in the cinema. All the movies are related to the theme about human, nature, community, society and technology. As a conclusion of the exhibition, visitor would end their trip in the there.

The screen was triangle shape that provides more space for visitors to watch movies. The floor was covered by artificial turf. When people entered into the space, they felt that they were in forest. The seats are arranged different height to suit various persons. Artificial light illuminate on the floor to create mysterious atmosphere.

Adaptive ReuseClemence St between Washington St and Weybosset St, Providence, Rhode Island

Overwhelmed by piles of trash, obscure spaces in cities, such as the narrow spaces between buildings or the bottoms of bridges, are often forgotten and overlooked. These small and ignored corners contribute negatively to the overall health of a city. Applying the Roman saying, “mens sana in corpore sano” (sound, mind, healthy body), the rejuvenation of even insignificant corners is instrumental to the positive rehabilitation of the urban fabric city and its inhabitants.

When I am walk in downtown Providence, abandoned spaces buildings. These spaces have practical significance for the city and cannot be ignored. The alleys should have specific roles, functioning as a part of the city to help serve citizens and improve quality of life. The narrow and small spaces located in the crowded downtown are often forgotten by residents, but the truth is that they contain huge potential.

I will focus on how to optimize use of these scraps of the city to make the downtown area healthier, and cleaner a cleaner place to study, work ad live. The alleys will remain public places, offering various services with restrooms, vending machines, trash bins, drinking fountains and other facilities. They will be safe and clean spaces that will serve the community. These restrooms will exist in a crowded and compact areas in the city, bring convenience to residents and travelers. This project will not exist in one, the isolated site, but be a ubiquitous design scattered throughout Providence. These insertions will dramatically change the alleyways. The alleys will become clean and convenient, making them a symbol of health and well-being in the city.

Located at Clemence St between Washington St and Weybosset St, Providence, Rhode Island

The site’s original funcation was Shepard

Company Department Store was founded in

downtown Providence in 1880. When is opened,

it only occupied two floors of one small building

at the corner of Westminster and Clemence

Streets. The first adjacent building was acquired

in 1896. Its quick expansion led it to become

the largest department store in New England by

1903. By this time, it occupied the entire block;

the physical growth of the building was affected

by new construction and the acquisition of

adjacent structures, which were added to form

what stands today. Shepard’s was a “full service”

department store and was for almost 100 years

a Providence shopping institution. A Providence

Journal article from 1909 boasts that Shepard’s

had a restaurant which seated 4100, a laundry,

refrigerating and ice-making plant, fur storage

room, and a complete printing plant. It was one

of only two department stores in Providences

to occupy a whole city block. Unfortunately,

the store went bankrupt in 1974. Over the

years other retailers occupied portions of the

building, but none reached the success which

Shepard’s had once experienced. The building

currently houses offices and the University of

Rhode Island’s continuing education department.

Although its function has changed, its mostly

unchanged façade evokes memories of the glory

days of Providence’s downtown retail center.

The alleyways between buildings in downtown Providence have become

dirty, unsafe and underused. However, these spaces contain great power.

They have the potential to become an essential public service for the city. I

will create a space within these alleys that provides a series of public services,

such as public restrooms, trash bins, vending machines, benches, drinking

fountains and compost, which will help change the environment of the alleys.

All the public service facilities will bring safety, hygiene and convenience to

the city.

Safety:

A public restroom is the focus of the design. It is located in a crowded and

compact area in downtown Providence. Safety and hygiene are the essential

preconditions of the restroom. The bathroom will be opened 24 hours and

bring convenient restrooms to the public. For example, people on their way

back home from bars will be able to use a clean and safe restroom. Travellers

who are not familiar with the city will be able to find these restrooms easily.

Hygiene:

A wastewater recycle system will service the restroom. It will collect and

purify storm water, such as rain and snow, for use. Trash bins will no longer

be isolated but will instead be attached to and integrated with the building

and covered by special plants. These will purify the environment of the whole

alleyway.

Convenience:

The vending machine is a useful object for the public. People will be able to

buy inexpensive food, drinks newspapers from these machines.

Design Conceptstructure. The lighting system is installed in the wall. I hope the whole

design can be hid in the city, so I choose metal material. It can reflect the

surrounding environment and the street view.

Water is flowing in the alleyway. I try to imagine the condition of water, when

water pass through the alley. So I use line elements in my design.

All the structure system is hid in the metal panel. And it is stand alone

But in the right side, the shape of building is more sharp, so it looks more

Elavation And Renderings

For the long alleyway, I try to separate people’s walkway and cars’ way. The

people’s walkway goes up 3’. People can use benches, restroom, drinking

fountain, vending machines and trash bins. For another side, I define it

as a street plaza. People can use vending machines to buy some food and

newspaper. And they can use digital screen to read newspaper as well.

After my investigation, I found it is surrounded by many famous universities. Every year, many students graduate from here will choose their own businesses. Then they need a cheap rent, convenient place to carry out their careers. Meanwhile, there surrounded by convenient transportation, social conditions, thus I decide to build a Startups Incubator. It combines a lot of different functions, such as office, residential, finance etc.

My design concept comes from Lego. I analysis the entire building, regroup, and taking into account sunlight, climatic factors. The side of the building that faced the sun installed a set of glass staircase, so that sunlight can enter the room.

In the incubator, there are some necessary

function, such as working space and

relevant facilities. Also, this part is the core

of the building with the largest area. In my

design, the combination of the working

space and living space is a distinguishing

feature. It means people can both work and

live in one building. There are mini market

and bank, the people who live here can get

living products conveniently.

Oz national museum is located in Maine. This project is “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” story narrative museum.

Dorothy. The Yellow Brick Road. The Scarecrow, Tin Woodman, and Cowardly Lion. The Emerald City. Toto. The Wicked Witch of the West. The Poppy Field. The Munchkins. Glinda, the Good Witch. In the history of twentieth-century American literature and entertainment, there are no better-known or more indelible and influential images than these. The design comes from the hero adventure story line.

The Museum is founded on the leading collection of books, memorabilia, print and audio-visual material, and other works based on and derived from L. Frank Baum’s 1900 classic book “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” - generally considered America’s first indigenous fairy tale.

Program Analysis

The design comes from the hero adventure story line. The yellow brick road is the main line of the story, which is also my design concept. I placed the yellow brick road on the ceiling, with a combination of the 3d portraits of the characters in the story. This allows people to feel the atmosphere of the story at the same time at same time, while making full use of the space. When people look at the museum outside, the first thing they see is the silhouette wall including the characters in the story. During the night, the built-in lights will be revealed from the silhouette wall. After entering the museum, people will see a wall made from the old TVs playing the movie on a loop. Then in the main hall, I created a forest feeling. I chose to use a green carpet, slightly elevated ground and created hill-like ups and downs with wooden showcases; this allows people to have the fell immersed in the experience. The exhibition hall is next. Visitors can look at each era of Oz books, and get a copy to read. Then poster showroom here will take full advantage of the display panels of the wall and the middle space to display posters of various sizes. The museum also has a cinema, a temporary exhibition hall, café and various other features.

by green carpet with slight rise and fall. I was trying to assemble nature. Exhibit items are displayed on the four walls and central showcases. For three walls, I used existing wall to arrange large exhibit space. The most special part of the main exhibition hall is the ceiling design. I put five circle shape installations on the ceiling. Every installation presents one important part of the story, and they follow sequence of the story and connected by the yellow brick road. Two-dimension pictures and three-dimension item are combined in the installations. Two-dimension picture to present the characters of the story, and all the characters face to visitors. When visitors see the installations, they would notice that the hands of characters are three-dimension. It looks like that the characters are watching visitors too.

Visitors follow the shadow wall go into the entrance of the museum. There are main characters’ silhouettes on the wall lead visitors into the museum. Reception area is located in the entrance of the museum. Besides the normal reception desk that provides information about the museum to visitors, I designed an old TVs wall that plays parts of the movie. When visitors face to the old TVs wall, the cinema is on the left side of them, people could watch the whole movie in there.

The main exhibition hall is located in the right side of the reception area. Because of narrow existing space, the client would like to arrange a large space to display substantial items. I exploited open space of existing space as main exhibition hall. The floor of the hall is covered

48

Page 54: Ke xiao

49

Page 55: Ke xiao

As client’s requirement, there is a temporary exhibition space close to the exit of the museum. It is used for temporary exhibition that relates to The Wonderful Wizard of OZ.

After visiting, visitors see a three quarter circle shape café attaches to the museum. They could buy gifts and have a rest in there. Because of glass wall, people could enjoy the relative sculptures.

The library is next to the main exhibition hall. Clint collected various editions of The Wonderful Wizard of OZ. Visitors could get the copies of the books and set down in sofa to read. The green carpet covers the floor that is an extension of the main exhibition hall. The bookshelves were made by wood, so it is environmental and nice.

In the posters exhibition hall, a large number of different posters that are client’s collection are displayed. So I designed an empty space for posters. All posters could be displayed on walls, display boards even ceiling.

Proposal for the Exhibition Activity of Protectction and Promotion of Folk Art in Shananxi ProvidenceXi’an, Shanxi, China

In modern society, people focus on making a living but forget about ancestral treasures. Do you still remember the cloth tiger and the rattle-drum you played with in childhood? Do you still remember the ditty your grandmother often sang? Do you still remember the clay doll you played with?

Where are folk crafts, their makers and the skilled old artists? Now, folk artists possess highly developed skills but their talents go unrecognized. Modern people value the fine arts, their growing potential and collection value while ignoring the valuable meaning of folk art. In face of such a situation, we hope to protect and inherit folk craft; therefore, we hold this exhibition in the protection and promotion of folk art of Shaanxi province.

The different folk arts are located in different parts of Shanxi Province. I did research about location of each folk art and map them on right. They are scattered in the whole province. I choose the provincial capital, Xi’an, as the location of design. Xi’an was the capital of China in 900 years ago. It is still an important city in China. So I collect all the folk arts of Shanxi to exhibit in Xi’an. It is good for propagation and development of folk arts. Also, the publics have an opportunity to learn more about our traditional folk arts.

I did some research about the degree of folk arts knowledge in different groups of people. Young people would like to play with some fashionable ways instead of knowing more information about traditional folk arts. So the exhibition is necessary for everyone.

Design Concept

The design concept comes from the fairy tale. Shanxi folk art is like the precious treasure, the exhibition is like a key to open the treasure box, that will show these wonderful folk art to people.

54

Page 60: Ke xiao

I tried to make some changes on normal treasure box. The main buildings were twisted and combined together. I choose translucent concrete as the exterior material. So visitors can see the traditional pattern on the wall during nighttime. I create a public square in the center of the whole landscape.

When visitor finish their journey, they can go to the square to have rest. In the circulation turn, the exhibition is the hall of Chinese paper cutting, the hall of shadow play, the hall of cave dwelling, the hall of new year picture, the hall of waist drum and the hall of qinqiang opera.

Page 61: Ke xiao

56

Page 62: Ke xiao

Starting lobbyIn the starting lobby, I create a taper cone on the ceiling with the different Chinese paper cutting pattern, and conceal the various lights inside. The material of the wall is translucent concrete. So when the lights illuminate the space, the light will create magical world. There are some showcases to display the information about the exhibition. People can get brochure in here to learn about different folk arts.

The Hall of Shadow PlayAfter the lobby, visitor will go into the first exhibition about shadow play. They can read the introduction on the wall. In this area, the

lights have important influence. The people can experience the fascination of the traditional Chinese paper cutting. The small circle-shape cinema located in the end of the hall. The visitor can watch short film about Chinese paper cutting in the cinema.

The Hall of Cave DwellingThrough the escalator going down, the visitor will arrive at the hall of cave dwelling which is traditional living way in the north of Shanxi Province. The huge screen will display the real living condition of people. Then, the magical elevator is waiting for the visitors, it will bring them to other exhibition.

The Hall of Waist Drum and The Hall of Qinqiang OperaBoth waist drum and qinqiang opera are acoustic shows. They are popular in Shanxi Province, and express the spirit of the Shanxi People. In lobby, I create a waist drum shape lamp bulb in the center, and surrounded by the LED light ribbon. It resembles to welcome and guide all the visitors. And the visitor can read the introduction of the waist drum and qinqiang opera. Two concert halls are separated in two sides of whole hall. I use Spectra Vision to perform the show.

Adaptive Reuse40 South Main Street, Woonsecket, Rhode Island

Due to the geography and environment in Woonsecket, I decided to take advantage of this abandoned house to build a fiber arts studio. Historical, this city has been famous for fiber products. Their environment supports their production. So I can bring them back in a new form. I used a fiber weave for the design concept to recreate the structure to make it a workshop and place for the sale of fiber crafts.

Design Concept

Because this is a fiber arts studio, I used waving shape as my design element to develop my design. The standard waving shape is that longitude and latitude is interlocked together. I distorted the shape to make it more changeable. When the deformed waving shape encountered with existing structure, it will engender various results. I exploited the deformed waving shape to cut floor apart and divide to different spaces. Because of enough height between floors, I was trying to utilize space, so that the mezzanine was removed and the third floor was raised. As a result, the total number of floors is five beside the basement. Because the different shape and size of each floor, they were interlocked each other that could ensure the height between each floor.

fiber art works. This is a store as well; visitors could buy their favorite art works in there. The sale income helps artists to develop their arts. There is a small café for artists and visitors. They could have a rest and appreciate art works.

Meeting room is located in second floor. Artists could meet with clients and discuss with others.

Their floor, forth floor and fifth floor is studios for artists. They could just rend a desk or an office even whole floor. There are many choices for different needs. There are some additional facilities, such as computers, printers and Internet that could make artists work more convenient.

Because the building faces to northwestern, the existing façade and ceiling was removed and replaced by frosted glass. More nature is allowed into the interior space. And the space is crossing shape, so the interior is lighter than before.

Interior space has several functions. The workshop is located in basement and connected to first floor through the rape. Artists could transfer their art works easily. The elevator is attached to the main building, it links each floor. And the art works could be carriage more convenient. Another side of the workshop links to back garden.

I created an open space in first floor for exhibition of

Small Exhibition Space Design Qujiang International Conference &Exihibition Center, 3/F, Pavilion A, No.1, Yanzhan Road, Xi’an, Shanxi, China

For this small exhibition design, I chose the APPLE Inc.’s corporate image and product display as the design objects. The theme is “unparallel”, meaning the structure it is not parallel to highlight Apple’s “innovative” ideas. The exhibition space I designed reflects this theme through the external shape and internal design of aspects of display props. The design also makes reference to the design of many Apple stores.

Exterior

The different products from appleI was trying to use the shapes of different prodects from apple, and simplified them to constitute the exterior shape.

The design is simple but concise. The main color is white, and the assistant material is wood. This design could present Apple’s characteristics. Because it is a exhibition space, line element was used in some parts to extend the whole space.

Visitors could get information about Apple and the exhibition. When they arrive at product experience area, they could try different productions, such as iPhone, iPad, iPod and iMac. The display tables that were made by wood and looked like Apple’s logo. Visitors cross through the product experience area, they could to go to second floor. The second floor is business negotiation area. Resting area and drinks are provided in there. In the back of the reception area, there is business area for individuals.

Shopping Space DesignXi’an, Shanxi, China

In the design of this shopping space, I choose to design a Carpenter Tan exclusive shop. Rather than a wooden decoration shop, Carpenter Tan look like a museum, with ancient stone walls, deep cob walls, and wooden ladders telling an old story. It is so remote but real, helping people to forget the noise outside. Carpenter Tan’s famous for a wooden comb, and you can appreciate the exquisite deta is in it. Handmade carving and exquisite polishing indicates the superb craftsmanship of traditional objects. The delicate comb and mirror, and beamish chopsticks show traditional Chinese cultural deposits.

Interior Detail

The store sale different wood products, such as wood combs, jewelry boxes and accessories. But the most famous product is comb. So I used the shape of comb to constitute the outward of the store. The comb shpae was distorted and extended to a new and random form. This form circumfuse and enwrap the building’s exterior, and it consititue final exterior design. For the interior, I used traditional elements to decorate the whole interior, like oiled paper umbrella and screen.

The store’s area is eighty square meters. When visitors enter into the store, they would see a folding screen with Chinese embroidery. So this design has ensured style of the store. Exhibition area and sales space is located in first floor. Visitors could buy and appreciate the products. Oiled paper

umbrellas are suspended from the ceiling.

There is a special area in second floor. It is a museum about different kinds of wood and information of brand. Visitor could learn to make comb by themselves.

This project in particular space, which located in she shelter in Woonsocket, RI. It is served for a families’ shelter of Family Resources Community Action. The purpose of furniture design, if is to provide furniture for residences temporally living in here. I hoped that the furniture would greatly enhance the quality of the shelter living room, addressing issues of storage and privacy, and providing desk areas where residents and their children can work on life skills, homework or art projects.

Detail

The purpose of furniture design, it is to provide furniture for residences temporally living in here. After analyzing the space, I designed this furniture that can optimize space, and bring convenience to people who live in there. In the space, there is a lack of storage space and learning space. In my design, I used a small space, close to the windows, in the living room designed for studying.

The cabinet, which also functions as a wall, works as both storage and a partition. I also put a folding desk in it to make full use of the space. I used a traditional architectural form in Japan - grid, which has both a sense of design, and can be opaque, yet does not affect the lighting of the living room.

RISD Museum, 224 Benefit Street, Providence, RI

Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design (RISD Museum), affiliated with the well-known Rhode Island School of Design, is a prominent art museum in Providence, in the U.S. state of Rhode Island. The museum was founded in 1877 and is the 20th largest art museum in the United States. The Museum is composed of five buildings located on the historic East Side of Providence. And there are several entrances in the museum. My design is located the entrance in 224 Benefit Street, Providence, RI.

RISDMUSEUM OF ART

After analyzing about the existing site, I found some problem in there. First, the entrance of the museum presents itself without obvious logo, so that some people could not recognize that this is a museum. Second, the lower ground is filled with soil. When it is during wet weather, the soil ground is too muddy to stand. And there is just some grass on the lower ground which waste space. Third, there is narrow alleyway between two buildings that actually could link two streets, but it is abandoned now. Fourth, the reception area in the interior is quite narrow now. It should be extended.

My design is inspired by Carlo Scarpa’s architectural design; I will bring forward the facade of the building, to make the internal waiting lounge space larger. I did a beveled design at the entrance, so that people can enter the museum through the ramp from both Benefit Street and Waterman Street. The front of the museum is a sculpture garden; it can be used to display outdoor sculptures. Traditional stones brick, laying on the ground, is a raw material combined with modern design expression.

Shaanxi Nature MuseumChang’an Sorth Road, No.88, Xi’an, Shaanxi, China

Since there are some drawbacks in the design of the wayfinding system of Shaanxi Nature Museum, I intend to remedy these drawbacks by some details, such as environment, buildings and lighting equipments. As far as I am concerned, the wayfinding system of Shaanxi Nature Museum should be characterized with its own features rather than some conventional leading signs. To highlight the distinctive characteristics of Shaanxi Nature Museum, I borrow some inspiration from a paper folding game I often played during my childhood.

To highlight the distinctive characteristics of Shaanxi Nature Museum, I borrow some inspiration from a paper-folding toy I often played during my childhood. It is a handmade toy that every child would like to play with friends. It has four directions to present south, north, east and west. It is both a kind

of simple compass and a simple scientific toy to children. I chose the paper-folding toy as my design element to remind everyone’ s initial scientific consciousness. When the toy is changed, it can be turn to different shapes. I utilized these shapes to design various indicators and destination boards. The

main color of the design is white wood and green to present the theme of the museum, nature. Through the new wayfinding and sign system, visitors could find their directions easily. There are many interesting elements that used in the new system could attract more children and young people.
