Online Personal Statements

Prepare your answers to the following questions knowing that this may be the only piece of information the scholarship committee members will read to give them insight about you. Well thought out answers with attention to grammar, punctuation and spelling are key to making a good impression.

• Many people entering college do so with a career choice already in mind. What career do you hope to pursue upon completion of your college studies, and what field(s) of study do you expect to help you in reaching that career goal? Or, if you have not yet decided on a career, then how do you think your college experience will help you in discovering a career path that would be meaningful to you?

• People help others in many ways, whether through daily interactions or through formal charitable organizations. Discuss some ways in which you have helped others, and how those experiences could serve as a model for ways in which other groups or organizations could serve the people of Hawai‘i.

• Kamehameha Schools was founded by Ke Ali‘i Bernice Pauahi Bishop, who sought to provide educational opportunities for Native Hawaiian learners so that they could be good and industrious young men and women. What do you think “good and industrious” means in today’s world?

Supplemental Essay Questions

Supplemental essay questions are listed in the Scholarship Listing and notated with (*) under each fund.

Your SAR summarizes all the information you provided on your FAFSA. Your SAR will contain your Expected Family Contribution (EFC), the number used in determining your eligibility for federal student aid and also the number the Foundation uses to determine financial need. Your EFC will appear in the upper right-hand portion of a paper or electronic SAR.

Electronic SAR

We highly encourage all applicants to complete their FAFSAs online. Upon completion of the FAFSA you will receive your SAR by e-mail within 3-5 days after your FAFSA has been processed, if you provided an e-mail address when you applied. The e-mail from FAFSA will contain a secure link for you to access your SAR online.

If you have a “junk” folder or “spam” folder in your e-mail files, check it. The e-mail from FAFSA might be delivered there instead of your inbox.

The Foundation will accept electronic SARs if it meets the following criteria:

• FAFSA (SAR) is completed without conditions under the “What you must do now” heading.

• Ensure that there is a dollar amount populated for the EFC. We will not be able to calculate your financial need if there is an asterisk (*) populated in the EFC area or if the EFC is calculated using estimated or the previous year’s taxes.
