Over the last 14 years the boys of Rushmere have sponsored two of Mr Kisaka’s Primary Schools, Obera and Rarage. With the generosity of our parent body and the hard work of the boys we have man- aged to raise over £250,000. This has enabled Mr Kisaka to totally rebuild his two schools, located in a rural part of South West Kenya. During Mr Kisaka’s week with us he took lessons in every class, teaching the boys about the impact that the project is having on over 1,000 children. Not only have we built 14 classrooms but other projects have included digging a bore hole, building two libraries and a computer suite and serving 600 children with a daily bowl of porridge. • After participating in the first round of the King’s Piano Competi-tion 2019 at the end of last term, 23 pianists were invited to take part in the eagerly anticipated junior finals. This took place on Mon-day, 29th April in our state-of-the-art concert hall. The excellent adjudicator was the British concert pianist Warren Mailley-Smith, who was delighted with the performances of the solos and duets which he heard. He gave some wonderfully constructive advice to all performers and commented that the standard was so high that he felt like he was visiting one of the junior conservatoires, such as found at the Royal Academy of Music and Royal College of Music. He awarded the prizes listed below, but all of the 23 boys involved in this enjoyable annual event should be warmly congratulated on their accomplished playing, as well as their informative, often witty and charming spoken introductions. Bravo to all!

  • news from the music schoolOn Tuesday night the Rushmere Soloists’ Recital took place in Concert Hall and it was lovely to see some boys make their debut performance. The next Priory Soloists’ Recital takes place next Wednesday 8th May at 5.30pm. On Friday the Chamber Choir will sing Evensong at St John’s Church at 5.30pm. There was a delay in the ABRSM releasing the spring term practical examination results but these are now in. Your son should check with his instrumental teacher or the school music office for his marks. The term is now in full swing with Jazz Piano Club, Sight Reading Classes and Composition Club all up and running. URs are excused from music rehearsals next week due to Transfer Exams. JCS rehearsal on Friday after school will run as usual.

Jelly – a fruit flavoured dessert set using gelatine into a semi-solid wobbly treat.

  • f r o m t h e P a v i l i o nWe are off and running, and my word did we get off to a flyer! It wouldn’t be cricket in England if we were not all peering through the curtains early on a Saturday, hopeful that the grey skies were not about to empty their contents all over South London. In-credibly, we managed to get 9 fixtures on against Dulwich College for our U12s and U13s! There were various formats taking place from 25 overs a side to incrediball pairs but, most importantly, every boy who had signed up to play cricket this term got a fixture to represent King’s against our friends and rivals over in South East London. The U13A team were involved in perhaps the game of the season even though it was just April. Having allowed Dulwich to score 154 runs from their 25 overs, our boys chased it down with one ball remaining, and only one wicket lost. Earlier on, all 10 players had a chance to bowl, giving every player in the squad an opportunity to contribute in the fixture – a key cricketing ethos here at King’s. The A team continued their impressive form with a first round cup win in the Surrey Prep Schools Competition against Downsend on Tuesday and hopes are high for a lengthy run. Back to the Dulwich block, and 6 more teams claimed victories in what was a very positive start to the term, and one now hopes that we can continue in slightly warmer weather. The cold did put paid to some of the catching chances around the grounds…… or at least that what the boys said on the coaches on our way back to school. The U11ABEF sides were in action against Cumnor House, with E and F playing their Cs and Ds. The A team did not set enough runs sadly and we are seeing more and more that a run a ball is being chased down by sides – testament to the attacking mind set of children when they bat. Geoffrey Boycott would have much to say I am sure! B, E, and F all secured wins with the F team impressing greatly with almost double the runs total of their D team opposition in the pairs version of the game. All the U9s hosted Shrewsbury House on Thursday morning, and again there were lots of different formats to allow all the boys to access the sport. One excellent method is to have batting tees on the pitch so that the boys can hit a ball even if it is a wide delivery from the bowler, giving them the chance to work on the all-important cover drive technique. The cup matches continued for the U13As with St John’s the visitors this time at King’s. After a tremendous bowling display, the 102 target was knocked off with overs to spare. Our tennis programme, this year under the tutelage of Mr James, was up and running this week with friendlies, Surrey League fix-tures, the Surrey Festival Doubles Championship, and the Independent Schools Doubles Challenge. There were victories against Danes Hill on Monday evening, and then both U12s and U13s won their first Surrey Leagues matches of the season against Har-rodian on Tuesday. Wednesday saw both the Surrey Festival and the Independent Schools Challenge, meaning that, on the plus side, we had greater opportunities for boys to play, but we were spread a little thin. However, the results that came back were incred-ible! I was over in Oxshott where our U9s won, and the U10s and U11s both came runners-up. Mr James was at St George’s College for the former, and we were runners-up across the board from U10 to U12 age groups. In the U13 age category we sent over another U12 pairing with the transfer exam on the horizon for our eldest boys, and they did the school immensely proud by making the quarter-finals. The competition at the Surrey Festival is of the highest order with schools like Reed’s and St George’s both having academies, so the achievement from the King’s boys should be heralded by the school community.
