So far we have 22 applicants for the 14 slots. Applications will be accepted until May 30. Sam and Erin, AFSC Peace Interns, and I are working to provide an interactive hands-on experience. We are reviewing creative training activities and beginning to invite guest speakers to talk about their issues and organizing strategies. Throughout the Institute we will work to apply what youth learn from understanding the theories, mechanisms and tactics of social change to organizing a social change action. Let us know if you have suggestions to make the youth’s experience empowering and meaningful. See below for more info. You can find more information at: http://afsc.org/story/summer-youth-social-change-institute And plan on participating in Trifecta Resista events May 30- June 1. Speak out against drone warfare and assassinations, nuclear weapons production here in Kansas City and elsewhere and jailing of whistleblowers like Chelsea Manning. And for college-aged individuals, the AFSC Peace Internship application deadline is June 15. US Doubles Down on Failed Military Strategy in Syria

Phyllis Bennis: 'The US says over and over that there is no military solution in Syria, yet their whole strategy is to strengthen the armed opposition.' - Sarah Lazare, staff writer

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry vowed on Thursday to step-up U.S. backing of armed

opponents of Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad as part of an 11-nation "redoubled" effort that

critics warn will bring further military escalation to the war-torn country.

"The U.S. says over and over that there is no military solution in Syria, yet their whole strategy is

to strengthen the armed opposition rather than the unarmed opposition," said Phyllis Bennis,

Page 9: KC AFSC Peace and Justice Alert May 16, 2014 · KC AFSC Peace and Justice Alert – May 16, 2014 Educate Yourself. Share your knowledge. Take Action! For information about the American

senior fellow at Institute for Policy Studies, in an interview with Common Dreams. "The way to

do that would be to move with Russia to demand an immediate ceasefire, immediate arms

embargo on both sides, and immediate return to negotiations."

Kerry made the comments to reporters at a Friends of Syria meeting in London, attended by

representatives of the "London 11" nations backing armed opposition to Assad: the U.S., Britain,

France, Germany, Italy, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Jordan and

Egypt. Ahmad Jarba, president of the Syrian National Coalition, also participated in the meeting.

Kerry said that all nations present agreed to "redouble our efforts, all of us, in support of the

moderate opposition." His statement echoed a communiqué released Thursday by the London 11

countries, which states, "We have agreed unanimously to take further steps together, through a

coordinated strategy, to: increase our support for the moderate opposition National Coalition, its

Supreme Military Council and associated moderate armed groups."

Kerry sidestepped questions about plans to ship more arms to Syria. "On the issue of weapons,

I’m not going to discuss what specific weapons, what country may or may not be providing or

not providing – as you know, we’re providing nonlethal aid," he stated. "But I will say that out of

today’s meeting every facet of what can be done is going to be ramped up. Every facet, and that

includes political effort. It includes the aid to the opposition. It includes economic efforts,

sanctions."

Uncle Sam before marching through the Plaza to the Brush Creek Pedestrian Bridge to take

our photo linking hands.

This National Day of Action -- Hands Across the Sand -- was founded in 2010 and grew into

an international movement after the BP oil disaster in April of that year. People came

together to join hands, forming symbolic barriers against spilled oil and the impact of other

forms of extreme energy. Whether it's Arctic drilling, mountaintop removal, dangerous tar

sands pipelines, fracking, exporting liquid natural gas, or shipping crude by rail through our

hometowns, we all have reason to be concerned -- for the health of our families, and the

health of the planet.

We hope you can join us.
