Rakha Tewany Katy Perry – Roar The music video of ‘Roar’ is a narrative as Katy Perry is telling a story with performance as she is singing. The theme of the music video is a jungle theme. The word ‘roar’ is empowerment as it is known as a loud sound. Camera: Throughout the music video there are a range of camera shots. There are a lot of close ups of Katy’s face this is to show the audience her facial expressions whilst she is singing. The next camera shot was point of view; this is on the man’s phone. This shows that he is self centred/ vain, that he basically loves himself. High angle shot is within the video, this is to show the high superiority/ strong. Shot reverse shot, this is used to show Katy and the tiger, E.g. tiger, Katy and then back to the tiger. Two shot was used to show her and the tiger, to show that she is a part of the jungle, the animals have accepted her. There is a lot of movement around Katy; this is because she is the focus of the music video. Editing: Within the music video special effects were used, animation. This is used through turning real life in to cartoon. There is mainly cutting within this music video, this is moving from one part of the video to the next. There is also the use of fading, from Katy to black, it is used to show the night fall/ passing of the time. Sound: Diegetic sounds – birds, monkey, roaring, elephants and insects, these sounds have been used as it helps to tell the story. Also Katy singing, part of the story. Foley sound – scooping up the water, blowing the spiders. Mise En Scene: Costume – the costume fits in with the theme of the music video, it matches with the animals skin. Setting – the colour, it changed through the video as it showed the audience her personality, through the way

Representation:The breaking of the shoes, this showed empowerment, trying to get across that she’s animal like, she doesn’t need to be girly.

Taking her clothes off, makes her look more like an object rather than a girl, the audience just feels that with fewer clothes she is just something to look at rather than anyone actually respecting her.

Message:The message of this music video is to show everyone can be strong; they just got to stand up for themselves, in any situation (breakup). Analogy, plane crash, him eaten, her abandoned.Connotations – the relationship ended badly, she felt frightened as she is on her own, and she’s lost.
