KATY JUNIOR HIGH BAND HANDBOOK 2016-2017

Greetings and welcome to the Katy Junior High School Tiger Band Program. It is with great excitement and enthusiasm that we introduce our program to you in a more detailed manner. We are excited that you have chosen to become a part of an outstanding musical organization; dedicated to developing the individual strengths and talents of our members, life enrichment and life long love of music. In addition, through the performance of challenging musical literature, team effort, and dedication, we will experience and inherit ideas and traditions handed down by some of the greatest musicians and people in the history of music.

Music is a performing art and learning to play an instrument is an acquired skill, as is math or foreign language, therefore, discipline and hard work are essential to the mastery of the art. Membership in a performing organization is an earned privilege. Each member of the performing organization has a responsibility to attend ALL rehearsals and ALL performances. You are vital to the success of this entire program, and your presence is necessary to prepare and execute a performance.

In the pursuit of excellence, it is important that everyone understands our expectations and we, as directors, understand you so that we can work together to be the best junior high school musicians possible. Any successful band program is a result of a strong partnership between the students, teachers, parents, and school administration. Each partner is equally important and the support of everyone involved is essential to achievement and enjoyment. We are committed to offering you a quality musical education and a rewarding and memorable life experience. We look forward to developing this partnership with the KJH community as we work to continue our “Tradition of Excellence” for the Katy Junior High School Band program.

This document outlines the guidelines and expectations for making this year a success for all involved. Both STUDENTS and their PARENTS should take the time to thoroughly read this code. There are a few documents at the end of the code for you to return to school indicating your understanding of these guidelines and expectations. We want your experience to be outstanding this year, without any confusion or misunderstanding. This code is intended to assist band students and their parents in knowing how we will effectively use the partnership we have created.

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.”

BAND PLACEMENT/AUDITIONS

At the end of the school year, we have auditions/advancements of students into the upcoming bands for the next school year. All students that are beginners will need to audition at the end of the year for placement into one of the 7th/8th grade bands. Audition packets are handed out two weeks prior to the students. All beginner band students are required to audition even if they are not signed up for the program for the next year. This also serves as a final grade for the beginners. Seventh graders will have the option to audition at the end of the year. If the student wants to stay in their current band, they do not have to audition. This will automatically place them in the same band the next year. If any seventh grader wants to advance to a higher band, they will have to audition for a director. There is no guarantee that they will advance, but this gives them the opportunity to prepare the music and compete with the other students. The criteria for auditions/placement include musical aptitude, grades in all classes, participation in band concerts/section rehearsals and overall attitude in class. We take all of these factors into consideration before making a final determination. We don’t move a student down unless a situation forces us to make that an option (I.E. Grades, Discipline, Playing Ability). The director will monitor their progress during the year. If a student fails to meet the criteria for their current band placement, removal to another band will be an option.

BAND DESCRIPTIONS

The KJH Honor Band is our top performance ensemble made up of advanced students, the majority of which are in 8th

grade. This band meets daily for one class period during normal school hours. In addition to the ensemble instruction during the school day, each student is required to attend one section rehearsal per week from 2:45 – 3:30 p.m. Section rehearsals give us the opportunity to continue with skill development on each family of instruments, and to do detail work on music that is not possible during a full band rehearsal during the school day. All Honor Band members participate in the fall, winter and Spring Concerts, TMEA All-Region Band auditions, KJH Pep Rallies, KHS/MRHS 8

th grade nights,

Solo and Ensemble Contest, the KISD Pre-UIL Festival, the UIL Concert and Sight-Reading Contest and the Spring Festivals competition. Private lessons are strongly encouraged, and extremely important to have in preparation for the many individual competitions that students in this ensemble may participate in very early in the school year .( TMEA All-Region Band).

The KJH Symphonic and Concert Bands are our second and third performing groups. These bands consist of 7th and 8

th

graders. The course outline for the bands is the same as Honor Band; the concepts and the expectations are the same, but the music is not quite as difficult. In addition to the ensemble instruction during the school day, each student in the Symphonic Band is required to attend one section rehearsal per week from 2:45 – 3:30p.m. Section rehearsals give us the opportunity to continue with skill development on each family of instruments, and to do detail work on music that is not possible during a full band rehearsal during the school day. Concert Band will rehearse during their class period. All Symphonic Band members will participate in the fall, winter and Spring Concerts, KJH Pep Rallies, KHS/MRHS 8

th

grade nights, Solo and Ensemble Contest, the KISD Pre-UIL Festival, and the UIL Concert and Sight-Reading Contest and Spring Festival Competition. The Concert Band will also participate in the Fall/Spring concerts. Solo/Ensemble contest is optional and UIL events are not required for the Concert Band.

EXPECTATIONS

Students must attend ALL rehearsals and ALL performances of the group of which they are a member.Students missing during class miss out on specific parts of the music process that may not be repeated in the samemanner. This increases the possibility of a student being less able to participate the next time they are in attendance. We know some conflicts cannot be avoided so we have listed a few items to consider throughout the year.

All members of performing organizations are expected put forth the effort and time necessary, in practicingtheir individual parts, to be successful.

Students in performing bands will attend all section rehearsals as well as full ensemble rehearsals. Sectionrehearsals will be once per week, from 2:45–3:30PM. After school Full Ensemble rehearsals will be on an “asneeded” basis. ( usually beginning a few weeks before a major performance or competition) A schedule of theserehearsals will be sent home at least 2 weeks before the first rehearsal. As mentioned before, we will work closelywith the athletic director and coaches to insure equitable practice/rehearsal time in the best interest of the student.

8th

Graders: Towards the end of the spring, Morton Ranch HS and Katy HS host an Incoming Freshmanmarching camp. This camp enables students to experience marching band at the beginner level. Students that mighthave questions will have the opportunity to ask them at this camp. This is also a great chance to make friends at thehigh school level and start parent involvement. These camps are an extension of our music curriculum and thereforeare graded events. Participation and attendance are mandatory.

Page 5: Katy Jr. High School Band Handbook 2016-2017staff.katyisd.org/sites/kjhband/Documents/2016_2017 KJH Band Handbook.pdf• The KJH band program strictly adheres to the success factors

SECTION REHEARSALS are a requirement for membership in the Honor and Symphonic Bands. Section rehearsals are a curricular part of the instruction of these classes. They are a continuation of the pedagogical aspects of instrumental learning that started at the beginning band level. If a regularly scheduled sectional is missed because of a school activity or other excused absence of which the director has been previously notified, students must make up that sectional by attending a make up sectional during the same week.

ABSENCES ARE CATEGORIZED AS EXCUSED AND UNEXCUSED.

• An unexcused absence is one that the director has no “reasonable” prior knowledge of and/or is based upon areason that is unacceptable to the director.

• An excused absence is one that the director has “reasonable” prior knowledge of and/or is based upon anacceptable reason. Being absent from school and then missing a rehearsal or performance is an example of anexcused absence. Students in attendance during the school day are expected to attend their before and afterschool responsibilities. If you leave school early due to illness, etc., on a day when you have sectionals, pleaseinform the directors on your way out, so that we will know how to count your absence (excused).

• Unexcused absences from rehearsals and/or performances demonstrates a lack of dependability in acceptingthe responsibility of group membership, and can be grounds for moving a student to a class with fewerexpectations or a non-performing class, if such a change is possible.

• The KJH band program strictly adheres to the success factors outlined in the KJH Parent/Student Handbook.Any behavior which is not conducive to good citizenship or which violates the Katy ISD Student Code ofConduct or the KJH Parent Student Handbook may result in suspension from participation in theextracurricular activities of the organization or removal from the organization. Additional measures may betaken through the principals’ office.

Students will be expected to respect all facilities, instruments and personal property. Candy, chewing gum, soft drinks and snacks will not be allowed in the band hall or in any carpeted area in the fine art wing.

• Students are expected to conduct themselves properly at all times. We are representatives of our school andcommunity at every activity and/or performance and flagrant violation of rules and procedures isunacceptable. As such, when traveling to other locations in district vehicles, all students are expected to:

1. Be on time for all trips2. Dress as directed3. Avoid excessive noise4. Travel on the same bus for all segments of the trip5. Return equipment to its proper storage place upon returning to school

If a student is required to leave from an away event or activity, the parent/guardian of the student must provide written notification to the director prior to the student leaving, and the student may leave ONLY with his/her parent/guardian as stated in the written notification provided to the director. STUDENTS MAY ONLY LEAVE WITH HIS/HER OWN PARENT OR GUARDIAN. This is meant to protect the student, not to inconvenience the parent.

Page 6: Katy Jr. High School Band Handbook 2016-2017staff.katyisd.org/sites/kjhband/Documents/2016_2017 KJH Band Handbook.pdf• The KJH band program strictly adheres to the success factors

GRADING PROCEDURES

• Daily/Minor Grades (35%) – Daily class participation, materials needed in class, written quizzes, skilldemonstrations, section rehearsal participation. 8th Graders: Participation and attendance of KHS/MRHSIncoming Freshman Camps.

• Major Grades (50%) – Playing tests, written tests, curricular performances including audience participation,long-term projects

• Homework/Other (15%) – Instrument take home and section rehearsal attendance.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Playing tests will generally occur during section rehearsals; an unexcused absence from section rehearsal WILL affect both the daily and major components of the student’s grade (section rehearsals and playing tests are a part of the major component). If a playing test is missed for an unexcused reason, the student may make up the grade, but for reduced credit.

ACADEMIC ELIGIBILITY RULES (NO PASS-NO PLAY)

Academic eligibility is a critical issue for members of performing groups. House Bill 72, which became law in 1984, mandates that a student be suspended from participation in ALL extracurricular activities (athletics, band, clubs, etc.) sponsored or sanctioned by the school district during the three week period following a six-weeks’ grading period in which the student received a grade lower than 70 in any class. This suspension continues for at least three weeks, and academic eligibility is not regained during the school year until such time as the student’s grade in EACH CLASS is 70 or greater at progress report time (in the middle of a grading period) or at the end of a six-week grading period. A student may continue to practice or rehearse with the academically eligible students for an extracurricular activity, but he/she may not participate in an extracurricular performance (or game) until the suspension is lifted. A suspended student may regain academic eligibility seven calendar days after the six-week grading period ends or seven calendar days after the three-week progress reporting period. The school district maintains a calendar with these dates of loss of eligibility/regain of eligibility. The KJH faculty has established procedures for checking the academic eligibility status of students. In many instances, some students maybe the only person playing a particular part or the only person playing that particular instrument in the ensemble. Not being able to perform with the ensemble for a major performance or contest not only hurts the individual, but it can ultimately be detrimental to the entire ensemble. Students who show a consistent inability to pass their academic classes will be placed on notice and will have a parent conference scheduled as an intervention. If this fails to remedy the situation, the student may be removed from the performing organization and placed into a non-performing class.

MATERIALS NEEDED IN CLASS

Staying on top of your practice assignments and daily responsibility in band is an important part of your musical development and essential to the success of the entire band.

You will need the following items every day:

• Positive Attitude: “Choose your Tude” We must make it a priority to make it a great day and not just have agood day.

• Instrument (in proper playing condition)• Be There: Students cannot learn if they are not present mentally and physically.• Pencil (mechanical are great, they’re always sharp)• Band Binder with all music, books, handouts given in class, etc.• Any needed accessories (valve oil, extra reeds, slide spray bottle, etc.) as instructed by the director.• Percussionists will always have their own sticks/mallets, which they will keep in their personal stick bag.• Personal tuner and pick-up. (Optional)

COMMUNICATION AND SCHEDULING CONFLICTS

Communication is vital to the enjoyment and survival of our program. The only way we can truly reach our potential is by everyone working together. The directors will communicate with students and parents in a variety of ways. It may often be verbal, but we will also give any important announcement to you in writing far in advance of any obligation. With regard to the calendar, we have attempted to construct it so that major band events such as concerts do not fall on school-sponsored athletic events (game days). However, this may happen from time to time. We are currently developing a schedule for section rehearsals that will minimize, and in some cases eliminate conflicts with before and after school athletic practices, as well as game days. We will give the schedule to the students (the schedule for the Symphonic Band may be different from the schedule for the Honor Band). The band directors and the athletic staff will work closely to ensure that students may fully participate in the activities they choose to be a part of at KJH. Please understand the necessity of informing us of conflicts as soon as possible, to allow time to resolve or work around it.

• You will receive an updated band calendar at the beginning of the school year to help you in planning.

• Concerning doctor’s appointments: if at all possible, please schedule office visits for times other than when youwill be involved in rehearsal or a performance. Obviously, though, there are situations where this is impossible, and as long as we communicate, it will not be a problem.

SPRING TRIPS

Toward the end of each school year all of the KJH bands are involved in a spring trip and competition festival. Because these trips involve curricular band competition performances, participation in the performances are required. Activities after or additional to the band competitions are optional, but highly encouraged. Spring trips are a reward for our band members’ hard work. In order to attend the spring trip students must attend all after-school rehearsals, performances and competitions during the school year (unless excused by the director), and maintain academic eligibility and “satisfactory” or higher marks in conduct. Students who do not fulfill these obligations will not be eligible to attend the Spring Trip and funds paid towards such trips are non-refundable.

BRACES AND ORTHODONTIC PROCEDURES PLEASE READ CAREFULLY!!

• Wind players (woodwinds and brass): If there are plans (even if it is only a consideration) for orthodontics(braces), please be mindful of the timing involved in getting them. Braces are a fact of life for many students, and if you should get braces, you will continue to be successful with them after the first week or so after getting them (it takes time to get used to them). We only ask that you kindly consider not getting them put on (or removed, for that matter) in close proximity to major performances (i.e. Solo & Ensemble, end-of-year concert, and audition, UIL time). Please inform us early of your intention to get braces or get them taken off so that you have adequate time to adjust to your “new” mouth. We realize it may be impossible to work around missing a class for adoctor/dentist/orthodontist appointment.

DRESS POLICY

ALL STUDENTS WILL BE EXPECTED TO DRESS APPROPRIATELY FOR ALL CONCERT PERFORMANCES.

Acceptable attire for performances is as follows:

Boys: Bow tie and cummerbund (provided by band), tuxedo shirt, black slacks (no jeans or cargo), black dress shoes and black socks and a plain white under shirt.

Girls: Bow tie and cummerbund (provided by band), tuxedo shirt, black skirt (below knee in length) or dress slacks (no low rise, tight fitting, stretch or cargo pants), black hose or black socks, black dress shoes, (no sandals or open toe shoes), and a plain white under shirt or camisole

If this dress code is difficult for your child to fulfill, please bring it to our attention well in advance and we will find a solution to meet their needs. We currently have a selection of black pants, skirts, and shoes provided by our Band Booster parents to help those needing assistance. Students must be in uniform in order to perform. We are judged on our appearance as well as our performance.

For pep rallies, football games, and other informal performances students will wear their KJH Band t-shirt and full length jeans. Cost of the band T-shirt is $12. An order form for this year’s shirt has been included in this handbook. Please return the form and checks made payable to “KJH BBA” as soon as possible.

PERSONAL PROPERTY AND EQUIPMENT

Katy ISD does not provide insurance for individually owned equipment. Certain insurance companies allow you to purchase an additional or “rider” policy to cover musical instruments. These policies are usually very inexpensive and more than sufficient. Please contact your agent for more information on what is covered and under what conditions. Separate musical instrument insurance may be purchased through The Music Agency, of Arlington, TX; 1-800-421-1283. They may also be reached via the Internet at: www.musicagencyinc.com Students will be instructed as to where to place their instruments during the school day. It is the responsibility of each student to place his or her instrument in this assigned location each day.

SCHOOL-OWNED EQUIPMENT

Katy ISD provides certain instruments for student use. These are instruments generally more expensive or of a special nature and require a more professional mode of maintenance and care. It is the policy of Katy ISD to require an instrument maintenance fee ($100.00 per year) that covers normal “wear and tear”, cleaning and routine maintenance of the instrument to insure the instrument remains in top working condition and maximize the life of the instrument. Damages caused by fire, theft, or abuse will be charged to the student. The school district has a substantial amount of money invested in the instrument and equipment inventory, and it is meant to last (and can last if properly maintained). Normal wear-and-tear is to be expected. School-owned instruments are furnished by the school for the purpose of avoiding large expenditures from the parent, and to provide a well-balanced instrumentation for each performing organization. Good stewardship (care of that which does not belong to us) is a character trait that we will foster in our students. All equipment and materials must be kept in their proper storage location when not in use, and occasional inspections will be carried out during the year. All school equipment will be issued using a form that parents must sign.

PRIVATE INSTRUCTION

K.I.S.D. offers a strong private study program. The teachers who participate in the private study program are highlyqualified professionals who are approved by our own staff members. The fees for private study are consistent throughoutthe district. We are very fortunate to be able to offer such quality enrichment to the students at such a nominal fee. Westrongly recommend that students and parents explore the private lesson program if at all possible. The advantages of aone-on-one experience are substantial. One lesson with an instructor is equivalent to 5 days in class. While private lessonenrollment is open for the entire year and students may begin lessons at any time, teachers are available on a first come firstserve basis. Please return your enrollment application as soon as possible to insure teacher availability.

FUNDRAISERS

KISD is very generous in supporting the band programs in our district. However, as in all quickly growing districts, it is simply not possible for the district to fund all of the enrichment activities that we feel are a vital part of your child’s musical education. For this reason, the Tiger Band participates in two yearly fundraisers. Some activities supported by our fundraiser are registration fees and transportation costs for all non- UIL competitions, all costs for the spring trip,

6

Page 9: Katy Jr. High School Band Handbook 2016-2017staff.katyisd.org/sites/kjhband/Documents/2016_2017 KJH Band Handbook.pdf• The KJH band program strictly adheres to the success factors

purchase of extra equipment for the band program and other activities too numerous to mention. On average, the cost of each child participating in all band activities is approximately $120-$150 per year. In order for all of our students to get the full band experience without being a financial burden to you the parent, we ask that as many parents and students as possible participate in the band fundraiser. We understand that not all parents wish for their children to participate in these fund-raisers and the KJH band respects that decision. Please keep in mind, however, the cost of each child’s participation in our program and support the band in any way you feel possible.

BAND PARENTS

We are fortunate in the Tiger Band to have an active parent support group. Parent involvement and interest in student’s musical growth can be the single most important factor on this aspect of a child’s education. When parents are actively involved in their child’s musical endeavors, the chances for success are exponentially greater than the student whose parents show little or no interest. You can show your support for your child and the band by attending Tiger Band concerts, contests and band booster meetings.

A FINAL NOTE FROM THE DIRECTORS

It is our desire to use one of mankind’s greatest mediums – music, to enrich the lives of our students and establish an unprecedented “standard of musical and personal excellence” throughout the KJH Band program. Adherence to the expectations contained within this code will help us to achieve our goal of musical excellence through true T.E.A.M. effort: [Together, Everyone Achieves More.] Furthermore, we believe the experience, knowledge and skill gained through your participation in a quality fine arts program will help prepare you for the “performing ensemble of the future” in which discipline and team work are vital to success – LIFE. The Katy Junior High Band is a team; a group of people working together to achieve one goal. What a great musical future we will have if we constantly remind ourselves of that! With the support of the parents and administrators and total dedication from the directors and students, this standard will cease to be only desire, but the expectation of all that choose to become a part of this organization.

Please sign/initial in the spaces on the Return Page indicating your receipt and understanding of this document, and return them to your directors. Keep this Code and the Calendar convenient for future reference. We have also included a Parent Volunteer form, which interested parents may volunteer to help us with a variety of tasks. If you are interested in this, please sign up to be a Katy Jr. High band parent volunteer (even if you cannot help us during the school day). We always welcome assistance; without parental support and involvement, students get less out of their musical experience than they could otherwise.

If you should have any questions, please call the band hall at (281) 237-8214. If we are unable to talk with you when you call, please leave us a detailed message, and we will return your call as soon as possible. Parents, please partner with us to have a significant, positive influence in our band students’ lives. This is going to be a spectacular year in young peoples’ lives!

Thank you for your continued support of the Katy Junior High Band.
