A popular trend in Menswear F/W ’16 is the Hipster Meets Urban. Very much
like the way Kanye West dresses. There are a few staple items to this trend. However, it’s
still very simple. This trend is a mix of very basic clothing pieces that are heavily layered.
Kanye West is a major fashion icon in Menswear for this specific style. Although his
clothing line, Yeezy, doesn’t resemble his “street style” you are seeing this hipster look
more and more.
Now we all know Kanye’s outfits are extremely expensive and he wears the most
luxurious designer brands. Your everyday stores like H&M, Forever21 for men, Zara for
men, etc carry lower-priced verisons of these types of clothing pieces.
The most important item to complete this look is the long slim trench coat. There
are many different silhouettes of trench coats. The main thing is the length. Also, the
buttons are usually never closed and it is worn as more of a fashion statement than for
warmth. The trench coat completes the layering look. This article of clothing is the main
piece that Kanye is known for wearing. Usually every time he is photographed he is
wearing some sort of coat, whether it’s a leather jacket, a long trench coat, or even a coat
with a fur collar. The trench coat is the essential statement piece for this look.
Another key item in this trend are destroyed denim jeans. During my research I
found that men tend to wear more light-wash, destroyed jeans, which is different from the
women’s trend. These destroyed denim jeans are definitely on the hipster side, giving this
look a more casusal effect. A key trend in the destroyed denim look is just big rips at the
knees versus rips all over.
HIPSTER HAT:
There were also some accessories that I found were very in style for this
menswear trend. The main accessory that keeps popping up is the fedora. This is the
perfect accessory to complete the look for this trend. The fedora also helps to create a
cool hipster vibe making this trend a bit more interesting and spices up your basic
clothing pieces.
The color story for this trend are your traditional blacks, browns, whites, etc.
However, there seem to be some “pops” of color. We’re seeing army green, a sharp
mustard color and even a burnt orange. Along with this color story there are also some
key prints and patterns. Camouflage prints, some Batik and Tribal graphic prints, and of
course, plaids. We are even seeing some simple ikat prints as well. The prints in this
trend are usually subtle, with just a hint of a pattern. For example, a plaid shirt tied
around the waist. Maybe a camouflage utility jacket versus a trench coat to add some
graphic interest.
