Trail Crew Member Summer 2014 Worked on a four-person, professional trail crew for the Green Mountain Club on Vermont’s Long Trail. Built trail features including: rock staircases, check-steps, scree walls and wooden staircases. Became proficient in using a griphoist to move two-ton rocks to work on projects. Used a chainsaw to clear blow-downs on the trail and to cut lumber. Worked with a variety of tools to dig, clear and move earth in order to cut and bench miles of new trail. Utilized PPE and safe workplace procedures, lived in the backcountry five days a week, using Leave-no-Trace principles and efficient, environmentally-conscious camp procedures. Summit Caretaker Summer 2013 Caretaker on Mt. Mansfield, Vermont. Maintained mountain shelters and trails, collected fees from overnight hikers and performed summit duty on the mountain. Obtained a strong understanding of alpine ecology and interpretive skills, used a variety of trail-building tools and maintained the composting privy system unique to the Green Mountain Club. Educated hikers on the ecosystems and hiking etiquette. Became a self-sufficient hiker and performed a variety of wilderness first aid procedures including participating in litter carries. Field Station Caretaker October 2102 - May 2013 Worked for Hudsonia Limited, a nonprofit environmental research institute in upstate New York. Assisted in promoting and nurturing biodiversity in the Hudson River Valley. Entered fieldwork data into Microsoft Excel, helped with office work and assisted in preparing for short courses taught to landowners. Helped with the station’s herbarium and preserved animals in formaldehyde for instructional purposes. As a caretaker of the building -- maintained the field station, lived in the apartment and kept the building clean and rodent free. Responsible for security and alarm systems. Helped students and the community access canoe and wading equipment. Bard College Office of Sustainability Spring 2014 Worked at the free-use student store, re-purposing and supplying used clothing and other discarded materials to the campus community. Planned up-cycle projects and maintained the student store. Summer Chef Summer 2012 The Wine Place, Yachats, Oregon. Created position as the summer chef and initiated the food service portion of the business, served food and baked products for sale. Catered wine and beer tasting events. responsibility, collaboration techniques, resourcefulness and many other skills that communal living engenders.  

● January 2015 – conducted ethnographic research on ecotourism and international outdoor recreation companies by hiking a

significant portion of the 650 kilometer-long Rim of Africa trail in South Africa. Awarded grants to fully fund research from

academic departments at Bard College. Working closely with Bard College professors, the research culminated in the publication

of an 120-page long paper that synthesized fieldwork and academic research into a thesis exploring the intersection of ecotourism

companies with local communities and the creation of nature into a consumer product.

management and animal husbandry – caring for horses, goats, chickens, turkeys, etc.
